Review: German soul troupe Hi-Fly Orchestra let rip on a serious cover version session with four tightly sewn showdowns: Karl Frierson adds bounds of gutsy, gritty soul power as he takes care of the vocals on the turbo-soul take on Lenny Kravitz's "Let Love Rule" and the deep-swing vision of Marvin Gaye's "Let's Get It On". Flip for two deliciously dreamy takes with Rayla Sunshine as "Purple Rain" gets a super-swoon shine while "Like A Virgin" is given a jazz twist that's so immense you'll pinch yourself it's not the original and Madonna's is the cover.

Review: Agogo Records put out some serious jazzed out funk this year and Hidden Jazz Quartet's EP was among its best to date. The title track "High Heels" features the voice of Omar and it's a blissful modern funk piece - exactly what we want to see! On the flip it's the Lack Of Afro remix, a irresistibly upbeat and feel-good bundle of piano chords and gentle lyrics.

Review: "Ofel I" marks the belated return to action of 13-piece Afrobeat ensemble Hoodna Orchestra, whose previous release - the hot-to-trot "Alem", made in cahoots with Ethiopian guest musicians - dropped way back in September 2017. The headline attraction is undoubtedly A-side "Ofel I", a low-slung chunk of horn-heavy '60s psych goodness that sounds like it could have been plucked from the soundtrack to a particularly trippy and experimental British spy movie. There's a similar feel to the admittedly more exotic B-side "Breathe", a killer cut that appears to have been inspired - in part, at least - by dusty Turkish psych-funk.

Review: Talented bass player and composer Yannick Nolting and singer-percussionist Eric Owusu founded Jembaa Groove in late 2020. After searching for other members to join, they formed a seven-piece collective made up of some of Berlin's finest talents and combine the city's underground sound with influences from traditional West-African sounds from Ghana and Mali including Highlife, Adowa and Wassoulou. Their fruitful work together has produced great results and we get some of it here with organic afro soul defying both sides of this 7". With hints of 60s and 70s styles, they take us on a sunny trip that will get you spinning.

Backed up by a further five players to form a septet, their music aims to cement the reputation of West African musics like highlife with the frenetic pace of Berlin's underground music scene. 'Sweet My Ear' is their latest single, packed with a steady Ghanaian funk, muted horn section, and multi-layered rhythm section, effecting a casually shuffly sound. Review: On April 6 2020, DJ Oonops will notch up his 100th show on Brooklyn Radio. To celebrate, the popular NYC DJ has partnered with Austria's Agogo records to deliver this celebratory 7" featuring three previously unreleased tracks. Side A boasts King Most's "Jazzy As Fogg", a fine chunk of instrumental hip-hop goodness rich in jazzy and life-affirming samples that reminded us a little of the kind of head-nodding dancefloor fare once released by Manchester's Grand Central Records. Side B begins with a superb neo-soul/R&B riff on classic song "Que Sera" from Canadians Mike Clay and Sara Diamond, before German DJs Stefan "Merse" Ulrich and DJ Robert Smith join forces as Slick Walk on the short, scratch happy, Fingathing style workout "The Devil's Lick".

Review: Brazilian hip-hop star Laiz follows her breakthorugh Ela Partiu album from last year with a multilingual, percussion-heavy tribute to Jorge Ben Jor & Quarteto Em Cy, threading Brazilian hip-hop through Latin groove, Afrobeat and free jazz. Recorded at Nima Studio in Hildesheim with her 20-strong band dubbed the New Love Experience, the album sits between languages and borders, echoing Laiz's own migration from Jundiai to Europe in 2019. Shaped as much by cultural dissonance as it is by Babylonian joy, the record is sung in seven languages, leaning on lyrical mysticism and transitive instrumental interplay, telling particular stories of heritage, upheaval and diasporic unity.

Review: Astonishingly, this year marks two decades since downtempo duo Mo Horizons made their debut on Stereo Deluxe. Given the anniversary, they've picked a perfect time to release their first new music in eight years. Female vocalist Noam Bar guest stars on "You Gotta Know", a snappy and undeniably funky fusion of crunchy, post-bossa drums, heavy bass, flash-friend funk guitars and 1960s Mod attitude. There's an altogether jazzier feel to "Ella Dice" on the B, a Brazilian-tinged jazz-funk instrumental featuring some suitably hazy saxophone solos and samba-soaked guitars and piano riffs. Both cuts are a little jauntier than we expected, but that's no bad thing.

Review: 'Mango Woman' is fresh a 7" by the German duo Mo' Horizons, known for their eclectic mix of downtempo, funk, soul, jazz, Latin, and African music. Prominently featuring the vocals of Gyedu-Blay Ambolley - an enduring pioneer of Ghanaian highlife, and debatably considered by some to be one of the forefathers of rap music - this is a sultry affair, charting up-close, boomy vocals and well-rounded percussion choices. Vintage Latin music artist Sono Rhizmo helms up the remix on the B-side, providing a carefully uptempo take on the track.

Review: Renegades Of Jazz are back to hit us with some powerful tribal gear, a blend of tropical rhythms that don't belong to any category per se, but that certainly satisfy the tastes of many a digger! The much wanted band are back on Austria's Agogo with two pure killers, the first is a funky head-nodder packed with perfectly executed guitar riffs, percussion that goes by the name of "Afro Cookie", while the flip goes into a more tribal territory, offering a gorgeous groove made of sweet vocalism and the sort of groove that would literally be enjoyed by just about anyone who's into 'good' dance music. be quick, these don't usually last! For fans of Mukatsuku, and the like.

Review: If you're on the lookout for some hedonistic, party-starting fare, we'd highly recommend this bonus seven-inch from Ogogo's ongoing Oonop Drops series. The theme is "ruff cuts", with the Ruffcats setting the agenda on side A, joining forces with Allergies' mic man Andy Cooper for the jazzy funk breaks-meets-scratch-happy-hip-hop heaviness that is the Slick Walk remix of 'On The Run'. That comes accompanied on side A by a typically tight and heavy instrumental version. Over on the flip, 6th Generation take over with 'Remember Us', a jazzy, deep and bass-heavy instrumental hip-hop number of the type that Grand Central Records' used to champion, before Clockwerk and Birdmoves wrap things up via the smoky trip-hop head-nod that is 'Portisheadshop'.

Review: Having signed to Agogo Records this year, Hungarian swing-hop duo Savages Y Suefo unveil their latest material in the shape of a six track EP. "Ballroom Breakers" sees singer Judie Jay front a perky, quirky pop-swing sing-a-long. Combo serve up a piano-led interpretation and Rube Swinging deliver a trip-hoppish mix. Original, "Black Cat Jive", again is up-tempo, this time being a brass-led, mambofied dancefloor filler. With its soft reggae-tinged vibes, things relax a little for "Our World Our Style". The latter is also reworked in a meandering Jazzy style by Renegades of Jazz.

Review: The Agogo imprint is on fire as of late, delivering powerful , and consistently excellent, wave of funk and soul from every angle. This time its Savages Y Suefo who take the helm, three artists who know how to get down and dirty with beats; they've already appeared on the label several times before and, along with some other like-minded beat junkies, know exactly how to contribute to this wild and multi-faceted catalogue. "Revolution" is an all-out party tune, a funky little number with a wacky groove and Ashley Slater's rugged vocals to add the dance floor mood; Mr Bird's remix adds a little 4/4 flavour to the beats, injecting some more power to those kicks, and making this a total club bomb.

Review: Some deliciously funky upbeat rhthyms here from the Una Mas Trio. The trio, which is really just a duo (Christian Schilgen and Fab DJ Sammy from Braunschweig, Germany) drop some wonderful brass and flute harmonies on ''Balkumbia'' which will warm your soul and have you asking, 'what's that tugging on my lip' (answer: it's a smile). Meanwhile the soothing sax and organs on closing track ''Mina'' take the Juno award for EP highlight.

Review: From Sekondi-Takoradi, Ghana, Gyedu-Blay Ambolley returns with another simmering display of his self-styled Simigwa-funk-part highlife, part jazz, part proto-rap, all unmistakably his own. Still sharp at 77, Ambolley commands a tight ensemble through groove-led declarations like 'Wake Up Afrika' and 'U Like Or U No Like', riding swung basslines and crisp horn arrangements with the flair of a master bandleader. 'God E See You' finds him slipping into a smoky, Afro-soul register, while 'New Simi Rapp' stretches out into hypnotic territory, led by flutes, baritone sax and rhythmic mantras. 'Ochoko Bila' and 'If You Want To Know' are more playful cuts, full of bounce and quick-fire wisdom. The production, split between Ghana and the Netherlands, balances live grit with rich detail-everything breathes, nothing is wasted. As ever, Ambolley's voice is both storyteller and instrument: loose, commanding, and deeply rooted in diasporic sound. This is music that moves and means.

Review: It's taken Italian nu-jazzer Andrea Benini some two years to write and record this fourth album of self-proclaimed 'voodoo jazz', and it shows. Far more loose, organic and musically intricate than his previous outings for InfraCom, it was reportedly recorded using an extended ensemble featuring 15 players. While based firmly in the jazz camp (check the numerous vibraphone solos for proof), Isle of Magic features numerous excursions into wildly different territories, from the heavy African drums of "The Golden Bamboo" and atmospheric trip-hop vibes of "Leo Chant", to the calypso leanings of "Kamakumba" and jaunty bossa of "Run Around" (featuring trumpet solos from Fred Wesley).

Review: Ubbo Gronewold and Tobi Kirsch are back with a second compilation of intercontinental rhythms after the success of the first one not so long ago. This one carries on where that one left off, but with the added emphasis of focussing on other European regions and including different countries than those from Vol. 1. A super broad spectrum of sound is covered as the mission goes on to connect music across borders and boundaries from Africa to Europe. There are newcomers, well known names, and a whole wealth of great jams and all of them rich in the musical traditions of Africa.
