Review: Little context is needed. Actress' latest EP, 'Tranzkript 1', continues Darren Cunningham's exploration of abstract and electronic forms, expanding on the pared-back sound scoured on recent full-lengths (such as Karma & Desire and LXXXVIII) for a rare EP. Elusive, and driven by both generative elements and finely scalped parts, 'Tranzkript 1' may or may not consist in the many part-AI-conducted sounds that Actress has deployed of late. 'Baby U Lar' and 'Guardians' are like phonetic muddlings and nephilic trods across desert landscapes respectively; they are twinned only in texture and not tempo, uniting only at the intersecting white-noise-glue-space that so characterises Actress' sound. 'We Walk Together' and 'Kjj_' span dub chordata and twinging dubieties meanwhile, wrenching the utmost emotions out of the barest recording instruments.

The Frequency Domain label has been quietly issuing some of the most compelling electronica of recent times, with a staggering cast of characters including Anthony Child, Bass Clef, Luke Sanger and more delivering more introspective, experimental material over the past couple of years. Now it's the turn of Apologist, a lesser-known project from Brendan Nelson which manifested in one 7" back in 2006. If you appreciate dreamy, slightly dubby electronics which move through different moods and scenes without getting you up off the sofa, this is the perfect trip. Many layered, richly rendered and full of grit and personality, it's the kind of record you'll discover new secrets in every time you visit.

Review: Hexed or vexed, either way Aya sounds pretty pissed off about something. Which is no bad thing. There's a lot to express rage about right now. But that's not really what this is about. Instead, as the blurb explains, this is a record which "confronts the desperation and dysfunction of addiction." No longer "me-less", this is what happens then the lights are turned on and both audience and artist see the real portrait for what it is. And that's pretty hard to define. There are moments here that erupt into niche-bassline levels of unabashed bouncy overbite silliness. At other times, it's freaky deaky broken grunge-electro. Then we descend into sludgy staccato mayhem. Fans of Rainy Miller, Iceboy Violet, and Arca take note - this is comparable, in the sense that it's pretty much incomparable.

Back in 1996, Richard D. James and Planet Mu boss Mike Paradinas collaborated on a bizarre self-titled album under the name Mike & Rich. A cult addition to their respective highly-regarded canons that saw the pair applying their braindance template to easy listening and funk, the album soon came to be known as Expert Knob Twiddlers thanks to the excellent cover art. Newly reissued on Planet Mu, the album has been "carefully cleaned up, re-edited and remastered from the original DAT tape [and] put into a more fitting order." Some twenty years on the album remains a playful listen made all the more compelling by the addition of seven previously unheard tracks. A must for any fans of Aphex Twin and u-ZIQ.
