All I Do
All I Do (7")
Cat: AHS 019. Rel: 02 Jul 20
  1. All I Do (Ryuhei The Man 45 edit vocal) (4:05)
  2. All I Do (Ryuhei The Man 45 edit instrumental) (4:05)
Review: Japanese live outfit, A Hundred Birds has a thing for creating classic covers. Over the course of their career, they've recorded countless covers, including organic, string-laden interpretations of techno scene staples such as "Blackwater" (originally recorded by Octave 8) and "Knights of the Jaguar" (The Aztec Mystic). Last year they offered up another warm and wonderous cover, this time of Stevie Wonder classic "All I Do". Here it gets a new lease of life courtesy of scalpel fiend Ryu The Man, who has delivered tightened-up, floor-friendly vocal and instrumental edits of the warm, rich, soulful and undeniably summery cover version. Both are rather good, though it's the vocal version that will win over dancers.

The Tropical EP
The Tropical EP (double 7" limited to 300 copies)
Cat: AOS 010. Rel: 29 Jul 20
  1. Aceedo Domingo - "Corre Riba" (4:25)
  2. Those Guys From Athens - "Na Bola" (3:45)
  3. DJ Laurel - "Peanut Man" (5:08)
  4. Monsieur Van Pratt - "Lose Your Mind" (4:24)
Review: As the title suggests, there's an undeniably humid, sun-kissed and tropical feel to Act of Sedition's latest double-dose of seven-inch re-edits. Accedo Domingo lives up to his name by adding squelchy TB-303 lines and relaxed house beats to a stirring Cape Verde dancefloor jam on "Corre Riba", before Those Guys From Athens deliver a chunky, house-style revision of a turn-of-the-80s MPB classic ("No Bola"). Over on the second "45", DJ Laurel tools up an undeniably funky disco number (the stellar "Peanut Man") before Monsieur Von Pratt makes an already heavy disco-funk number even weightier ("Lose Your Mind").

Turn It Up
Turn It Up (12")
Cat: AFS 038. Rel: 30 Jun 20
  1. Turn It Up (7:48)
  2. Turn It Up (instrumental Disco mix) (7:49)
Review: Afrosynth Records has become renowned for its deep dives into the colourful, synth-heavy world of original South African disco, boogie and bubblegum. They're at it again here, offering up a fresh pressing of "Turn It Up" by Adaye, a one-off studio project featuring members of legendary South African 'supergroup' Stimela. This edition replicates the track listing of the original 1983 release, beginning with the A-side vocal version - a driving slab of bubblegum boogie laden with James Brown style lead vocals, colourful synth sounds and delay-laden drum machine beats. The flipside "Instrumental Disco Mix" naturally strips out all but the backing vocals, instead showcasing the intricacy of the studio outfit's Prince-style guitar riffs, jaunty bass and kaleidoscopic synthesizer flourishes.

  1. Desire (4:13)
  2. Casa Fuerte (4:09)
Review: Copies of Francisco Aguabella's 1977 album "Hitting Hard" are not only extremely hard to come by, but also suitably pricey when they do come up for sale online. Fret not - Dynamite Cuts are here to help. They've decided to reissue two of the Afro-Cuban jazz/funk fusion set's most potent track, thus saving us the need to fork out the best part of 800 pounds. A-side "Ramon's Desire" - a cover of a Ramon Robes song - is suitably breezy, jazzy and positive, with glistening guitar and vibraphone solos combining wonderfully with a soulful vocal. Flipside "Casa Fuerte", on the other hand, is an all-action, high-tempo Afro-Cuban jazz dance treat, with high-octane piano solos rising above a Tito Puente style rhythm track.

Tu Jamas
Tu Jamas (7")
Cat: SG 039. Rel: 08 May 17
  1. Tu Jamas (4:14)
  2. Solo Tu Amor (4:55)
Review: Although best known as the lead singer of well-regarded Japanese funk-soul band O.A.S.B, Amy Akaoka has long dreamed up recording a salsa album in the style of '60s and '70s pianist and bandleader Larry Harlow. This tasty two-track 7" single is her first release in the style - the album will appear later in the year - and is as summery, breezy and life affirming as you'd expect. She begins with "Tu Jamas", where male backing vocals, jaunty pianos and her own passionate lead vocal ride a sweat-soaked salsa rhythm. Turn to the B-side for the horn-heavy delight that is breezy salsa shuffler "Solo Tu Amor". Naturally, both are hugely authentic to the style of salsa championed by Harlow.

  2. Afro Darkness (PAd remix) (7:53)
  3. Afro Discoteca (Jolly Mare Lifting) (5:44)
  4. Afro Darkness (LUCA Quirky version) (6:03)
Review: Back in 2017, Four Flies Records unearthed and released a previously unheard "Afro-cosmic funk" EP from Italian soundtrack and library music legend Alessandro Alessandroni. Three years on, they've decided to give the 1978 recording the remix treatment. Bolissa and guests Calibra 35 kick things off with a densely percussive, out-of-this-world take on "Afro-Voodoo", before Pad re-imagines "Afro Darkness" as a chugging chunk of beatdown-disco laden with colossal chords, arpeggio bass and intergalactic electronics. Over on side B the "Jolly Mare Lifting" version of "Afro Discoteca" is a veritable leftfield disco stomper notable for its low-slung bass and spacey Moog lines, while Luca's "Quirky Version" of "Afro Darkness" is the kind of hallucinogenic, Marimba-tinged number that you can imagine Daniele Baldelli playing at the Cosmic Club circa 1981.

  2. Salem Tradition - "Kabare" (Alma Negra rework) (5:15)
  3. Lindigo - "Tany Be" (Alma Negra dub) (8:55)
Review: For the latest excursion on their eponymous label, the Alma Negra crew is in full remix mode, in turn reworking tracks from contemporary Maloya combo Lindigo and lesser-known French Afro artist Salem Tradition. Their vocal and dub interpretations of the former's "Tany Be" are particularly special. While the dub is little more than a killer spaced-out percussion track with added delay-laden vocal and instrumental snippets, the "remix" is a near perfect fusion of woozy, spacey deep house and traditional maloya - all half-chanted vocals, snaking sax lines and warm bass. Those looking for heavy and druggy, kick-drum driven tribal Afro-house vibes should head straight for the remix of Salem Tradition's "Kabare", which is little more than loads of drums with an evocative vocal atop.

Review: Far Out Recordings have singled-handedly made 70s fusionists Azymuth one of the most acclaimed bands of the modern era, with high profile headlines sets at cult festivals around Europe and an endless stream of quick to sell out records. Now they shine more light on the virtuosos instrumentalists with this 7" featuring two more home-recorded demo tracks. Jazz, funk, psched out sounds and rich Moog bass make these some for heir more mind expanding cuts. The a-side is actually a take on an iconic pop song from the 60s by Jovem Guarda, and the reverse is a weird space oddity for hardcore cosmic adventurers.

Review: Afro 45's / Mr Bongo show no signs of stopping their tireless run of form and, 7" after 7", they just keep on producing the goods. There's yet more '70s goodness with this new little scorcher: the A-side is 1973's "Tessassategn Eko" by Bahta Gebre Hiwot, a pensive Ethiopian pop hit for all sorts of music fans to enjoy, but "Ayalqem Tedqem" by Alemayehu Eshete on the B-side is where it's at... just listen to that bass and you'll instantly recognize this wonderful little cover.

Moerarie Morei Atjara
  1. Moerarie Morei Atjara (version) (3:59)
  2. Moerarie Morei Atjara (instrumental) (3:33)
Review: While it may look and sound decidedly vintage, this collaboration between veteran Surinamese musician A Bechan and Music With Soul founder Alex Figueira is in fact brand spanking new. In its' A-side "Version" mix form, "Moerarie Morei Atjara" brilliantly joins the dots between Surinamese "Hindostan" music (a style developed by the country's Indian community over decades) and the sweaty tropical rhythms of Cumbia. It's terrific stuff all told, with Bechan's ear-catching Hindu language vocals riding killer South American rhythms, jaunty bass and equally jumpy accordion motifs. Those accordions come to the fore on the flipside instrumental take, which also includes some seriously spacey Juno-60 synthesizer lines. Recommended.

  3. Ijotiya (5:12)
  4. Love Is The Only Way (5:56)
Review: Given that Pedro Vian's Modern Obscure Music is renowned for its' off-kilter, unusual and often inspired releases, we shouldn't be surprised that this EP's take on West African music is far from traditional. It comes courtesy of Bep Kororoti (best known for his work as Kresy) and Akin, who adds vocals and saxophone parts. Check first the rubbery Afrobeat/heep house/metallic electrofunk fusion of brilliant opener "Epomuyen", before moving on to "Eruododo", a more bass-heavy affair which pushes Akin's Fela-style vocal and sax parts higher in the mix. Over on side B, "Ijotiya" is a more low-slung fusion of dub disco and Afrobeat, while "Love Is The Only Way" cloaks the pair's West African vocals and horn sounds in woozy deep house electronics.

  1. Dem Say Ah (Akoya Re Rub) (4:17)
  2. Dem Say Ah (7 Inch edit) (4:17)
Review: "Dem Say Ah" has long been a banger on dance floors tuned into international sounds. It's the sort of bouncy afrobeat and sax-laced classic that has been fetching huge amounts online. DJs like Gilles Peterson and Nightmare on Wax have been playing it for yonks and now, after many years of it being out of print, it is back courtesy of Push The Fader. The Akoya Re-Rub mix here was mixed by Ben Kane who worked on D'Angelo's Black Messiah, so this sounds beyond good. The 7" version comes from DJ Spinna with extra keys from Ticklah, psyched out bass and extra dub feelings.

Review: If hot-to-trot and heavyweight funk re-fixes are your thing, you should already be familiar with the work of Chicago-based Heat Rock Records. Their latest limited seven-inch delivers two must-check workouts. On the A you'll find the "Rhythm Rug" edit by San Francisco scalpel fiends King Most, a cut-and-paste concoction that peppers a sunny, hip-hop tempo good-time soul-funk groove with excerpts from the acapella version of rap classic "Can I Kick It?" Over on the flip, label regulars and Windy City heroes Altered Tapes provide something even wilder: a hot-stepping fusion of Afro-jazz horns, dancehall style drums and what sound like occasional Q-Tip vocal snippets.

  2. Wono (Yoruba Soul mix) (8:14)
  3. Won (Pocz remix) (5:22)
Review: London-based Japanese DJ/producer Koichi Sakai debuts with an EP that boasts a fine cover of one of Santana's most percussive moments, "Jingo" - a track later re-imagined as disco gold by Salsoul artist Candido. Sakai's version, featuring vocalist Afla Sackey, is a little more laidback, summery and Afro-centric than either of those famous versions, with a thickset analogue bassline being overlaid with jaunty guitar riffs and lashings of sweaty percussion solos. Over on side B, you'll find two versions of the deeper and sweeter "Wono": a languid, percussive and Afro-centric take by Osunlade and a Pocz remix that joins the dots between Balearic electronica and Afrobeat.

  5. Keiichi Tanaka - "City Of Dub" (4:30)
Review: Time Capsule's latest dive into lesser-known Japanese musical culture doesn't focus on dusty old music from the dim and distant past, but rather relatively obscure music made between 2008 and 2016 by artists specializing in "Island music" - a kind of hard-to-pigeonhole and stylistically eclectic sound with a defiantly tropical twist. This eclecticism makes for great listening and some genuinely unusual and entertaining musical fusion. For proof, check the hybrid jazz/reggae/jazz-funk flex of Speak No Evil's self-titled opener, the reverb-laden, bottle-neck Balearic blues of Aqatuki and the dub disco-with-surf guitars of Altz. Best of all, though, is probably the dubby exotica of Keichi Takanka, who delivers two contrasting versions of the same track ("City of Aleppo" and "City of Dub"). Top stuff!

Much like the first edition, which flew off our floors in absolutely no time, you'll be lucky to find this music anywhere else but righ here - these two work hard to dig out the very best of what the rest of the globe has to offer. More to the point, you'll find it even harder to find dance music as lush and tropical as this gear, a bubby assortment of dance tracks ranging from house to soul and dancehall. Bliss.

Review: First released in 1979 during the heyday of Brazil's jazz-funk movement, Antonio Adolfo's Viralata has long been considered an era-defining release by those who know. Given that original Brazilian copies are frustratingly hard to come by, this official reissue from Far Out Recordings - who previously worked with Adolfo on his 2007 set Destiny - should be an essential purchase for all those who dig Brazilian music. A little more jazz-focused than albums by contemporaries such as Azymuth, much of "Viralata" is slick, polished and incredibly well produced, with notable samba influences amongst the unashamed tributes to leading American artists. As you'd perhaps expect, the musicianship is astonishing.
