Absolute Zero & Subphonics - "The Code" (SKC remix) (5:13)
Noisia & The Upbeats - "Sacrifice" (6:11)
Digital & Spirit - "No Fear" (6:06)
Gremlinz & Overlook - "Horns 2015" (6:00)
Review: For those who appreciate the harder, more twisted side of D&B, no label can match up to the stature of Renegade Hardware. It's been some time since the legendary imprint let fly with some wax, but they've kicked off the From The Vaults series to go back over some of the most important releases in their massive catalogue and give the most worthy a fresh moment in the sun. Following on from landmark EPs from Chase & Status and Total Science, here's a VA disc featuring absolute devastation from Absolute Zero & Subphonics, gnarly acrobatics from the imperious Noisia and The Upbeats, an icy stalker from Digital and Spirit and classic 'Horn Track' sampling hi-jinx from Gremlinz and Overlook.

Abstract Drums & Optimystic - "Energy To The Universe" (6:33)
Justice & Metro - "Shadowkid" (5:40)
Pixl & Peeb - "Koi Fable" (5:49)
Sicknote & Escher - "Trouble Part 2" (5:48)
Review: Proper pristine, technical drum & bass here from the Transmute crew, expending far more effort than most junglists in fleshing out the body, weight and polish of each constituent sound. Mostly forgoing sampled breakbeats, the 'DUOS' EP hears refreshingly unusual sound design choices dance over a more straight-up rollage in the rhythm section(s). From the opening washer pads of Abstract Drumz & Optimystic's 'Energy To The Universe', to the closing techstep clanks of Sicknote & Escher's 'Trouble Part 2', this EP brings a variety of emotions to a gestalt whole, unified by its consistently clean production.

Amoss - "The Shapeshifter" (feat MC Fokus - Skeptical remix)
Optiv & CZA - "Sight Unseen"
Review: The debut sampler plate from Dispatch's Transit 2 album, this sets the tone for a whole wealth of next level D&B from Ant-TC1's super-respected imprinted. First up Skeptical remixes Amoss and MC Fokus's dark stepper "Shapeshifter" adding a cool swing to the groove that gives it a demonic, eerie sense of funk. Flip for Optiv & CZA's "Sight Unseen". Shuffling and scratching with an infectious sway, it's understated ugliness in its most purest form with a killer hook that worms its way into the groove mid-way.

Army Of Ghosts - "Dreaming" (8:36)

Latent Notion - "Lapse" (5:59)
Review: Wake up and smell the breakbeat! Transmute return with another absurdly good collection of tracks from friends old and new. The mysterious Army Of Ghosts set the scene with the breezy, deep and beautifully Good Looking-esque 'Dreaming'. Greenleaf and Ornette Hawkins follow with some of the wildest drums you'll hear this season. Cosmic jazz right down to the twinkling keys, this will fry minds! Finally Latent Notion closes on a deep space stepper vibe with 'Lapse'. Timeless time travelling... Sleeping is for winners.

Planetary Reboot (5:21)
Review: Here's a tag team you'd be proud to take home to your parents: polite civilised gentlemen by day Sam and Om are unruly, uncompromised club crushers by night, slapping ears happy with their unique jungle, hip-hop, bass melt-ups. Here we find them doubling their sonic muscle and creativity on their own Bunit venture: "Windmill Kick" is the ultimate finishing move, all clattering drums and classic jungle motifs. From here we get darker and starker with every track.... "Big Kev" is a big juicy rolling halftimer, "1000 Cats" is a bewitching brew of acid and underwater footwork while "Planetary Reboot" presses the beatless reset button on all your preconceptions.

Nevada Ghost
Decoy
Review: Whether they hooked up as like-minded souls or they were paired up by Horizons, the tag-teaming of Cern and Overlook is a stroke of genius. Cern's industrial undertones and Overlook's sense of spaciousness complement each other consummately, fusing to create two dark slices of minimal brutal beauty. "Nevada Ghost" pummels with strategic kicks and unnerving textures and far-away cries. "Decoy", meanwhile, takes the power factor up a notch with stuttering breaks and an immovable spine of iced out pads that flurry and flicker with subtle menace. Seriously heavy.

Operon - "Airports" (feat Manta Ray - Nookie remix)
Review: The next installment of Phuzion is here, 'I Don't Wanna Lose You' by Crix/Operon. The badman himself, Nookie remixes 2 heavy tracks
and does it well. Nookie takes a different approach this time with some tearout amen beats and some dirty stinking bass! For a producer
that does 99% of his tracks in the more liquid style this is a different look for the master of soul: absolutely disgusting. The flip brings his more
normal approach with some deep rolling flex with some super stretch basslines and skippy beats. This is one for his many fans out there. Limited.

Disprove, Signal & Audeka - "Ritual" (5:16)
Review: Methlab: the agency behind some of the biggest names in tech D&B and innovative events around Europe continue their pact with Vegas & Maldini's Bad Taste imprint with the second instalment of in-house creations. As you'd expect, it's an all-out assault as Current Value leads the charge with a sizzling neuro racer "Pelham 212", the ever-innovative Billain tumbles behind with "Metal Jaws", a loose and frantic cut with drums that really shouldn't make sense, but definitely do. Elsewhere Optiv & Cza get gritty and abrasive on "Sub Surface" while Disprove, Signal and Audeka shove their middle fingers up at the space/time continuum with "Ritual". Brutal.

Let's Hook Up (Neil Landstrumm remix) (4:38)
Let's Hook Up (Luke Vibert remix) (4:47)
Review: Rewind to 2013, Deft hurls us into a sea of feels with Om'Mas Keith as "Let's Hook Up" soothes with 23rd century soul. Trappy, R&B, cracked digital ice, it still sounds like nothing else. As do these limited remixes: longstanding left-side techno experimenter Neil Landstrumm taps into his innermost cosmic ghetto-tech psyche while Vibert goes back to papa-punching Plug jungle roots. Both add new dimensions to a modern day classic. Grab them while you can.

Omen Breaks - "Diss Me" (5:44)
Review: This 9th edition of Jungle Cat opens with "M0the3rfuck3r"and it sees old time sparring ragga jungle sparring partners Dub-Liner and Omen Breaks collide for an incredible jungle jam. Humungous subs, crisp breaks and occasional chatter; this will kick serious jacksy when spun through a good system. "Big Wheelin'" maintains that big sub signature but with much choppier, chaotic drums. "Diss Me" brings the finale heat in sweary, savage slap-about fashion. Potty mouth party power!

Review: Retreat! No time to surrender, the Jungle Cat crew are all present and correct on this absolutely smoking slab of wax. Vinyl only and brutalist in its construction and sound, each cut smacks with foundation fire. Dub-Liner goes back to Cutty's original source for a wild vine out. Omen Breaks lowers the tempo just a smidgeon and rolls out with the flabbiest bassline you've ever heard of, while Simply Dread supplies the most chaotic and mental of edits on closer "Bad". Not just a pretty title; this whole EP is bad to the bone. Vinyl only too. Purrfect.

Review: To 'Infinity' and beyond! Three unequivocally monstrous contemporary jungle craftsmen land back on Droogs with two sonic samurai slices. Gremlinz and Jesta hit first with 'Infinity' where iceberg breakbeats shatter into each other with drama and friction. Overlook takes over the B with 'Lone Pine' where a much looser, jazzier break takes the lead amid some hectic and very tense layers of atmosphere. Hurricane business.

Review: It's co-lab central as Cali badman Gridlok goes head-to-head with Optiv and Mindscape respectively. Originally released as digital only, now available on glorious wax, both hook-up projects sound even heavier than they did encoded. "Time Goes By" is a bullet proof blunderbuss that spits with a Virus style shuffle-tech stomp while "Chrome" is a much steppier affair with crisp snares and an alien bassline that morphs and mutates with same mischief you'll find on an early Krust or Photek record. The second sampler from the LP unites Clarity, Kiyoko, Overlook and Hysee with four deep audio explorations. Highlights include the floating fusion of ambience and solemnity on "Something To Think About", the soft focus clicky riddim on "Passages", the dubbed out synth reflections on "Past Participle" and sub aquatic sub punishment of "Sombre". Review: Another set of debutantes on Bingo, OB1 and Kontrol have made an appearance on Metalheadz' "Winter of Content" album last year, and bring something decidedly different to Zinc's label. "Can't Have You" displays an a sweet guitar hook laid over lively percussion and a bubbling bassline for a smoothed out summer roller. "Bad Minded" on the other side is a heavier affair where dark bass is interspersed with some flowing lyrics.

Kyo & Total Science - "Murder Tonight" (5:37)
Kyo & Mikal - "Where I Stand" (4:53)
Kyo & Onemind - "Play To Lose" (6:21)
Review: One of Break's most consistent and striking vocal collaborators, Kyo gets the Symmetry spotlight with this A-list collabo EP. "Who Decides" sparks up the dance with an electrified high voltage sneering bassline and loose percussion that only Break can cook up. "Murder Tonight" is a lot sexier than its title suggests thanks to Kyo's surging tones and Total Science's expert manipulation of the think break. "Where I Stand" sees Kyo teaming up with Mikal for the most stripped back and steppy affair while DLR and Mako's OneMind unit join her for the final, and darkest, chapter of the EP "Play To Lose" where Kyo hits her gutsiest, rawest soul notes. No decision necessary.

Om Unit's hometown of Bristol is said to have inspired the sound which take sin tech step, dub infused techno swaggering and 140bpm steppers that any warm blooded human couldn't possible ignore. Review: Double 12" dynamite from one of the most distinctive, genre-affirming imprints in D&B, the "Multiverse" EP sees some of the label's most notable characters and contributors colliding for four uncompromising co-lab creations. The title track is undiluted tribal drum drama, "Void" takes a classic rave vocal and sends it to groove galaxies previously unknown to man while the scratchy, savage "One At A Time" is just pure evil with added percussive punch. Mindscape takes the lead with the electrifying seizure-inciter "One Sound", Current Value's "Rocket Science" reminds everyone why he's in a league of his own while newcomer Pythius's "Driveyard" reminds us why he was nominated as Best Newcomer in the Drum&BassArena Awards on the basis of a very slim (but growing) repertoire. Review: Noisia team up with tech-stepping neurofunk originators Ed Rush & Optical on the A Side of this release on their very own Vision imprint. Cue a tense thriller movie style intro, punishing drum kicks and heavy sci-fi SFX. Flipping over for another killer collab, the Dutch trio get tech-y with Lifted Music's poster boy, Spor. Rippling synths, crisp breaks and a murderous b-line make this one a stand out, with super tight production - rather reminiscent the Conquerors & Commoners EP but with a noisier (!) edge. First up is a trio of scene mainstays with Noisia, Ed Rush & Optical all coming together for 'Brain Bucket' which is a devastating cut driven by skewed bass and layer upon layer of drums and aqueous bass. Objectiv & Untrue - "The Goons" (4:33)
Review: Objectiv returns to Flexout with a brand new single that blurs the boundary between rollage and jump-up. With the former term referring to drum & bass that keeps things on the subtler side - keeping things moving on a furtive tip rather than over-shelling or shredding via tawdry sound design - 'Seasoned' is a well-spiced fusion with the latter, which refers to a snappier form of the genre known for its 'jumpy' sound. B-side tune 'The Goons' is a raw, reverb-heavy yet no less crisp number, borrowing flavours of neuro, hip-hop and earlier jump-up for a heady freebooting stew.

And it's a very special record to celebrate the moment with. Introducing Ocean Stirs, who you might recognise as Tom Jarmey with releases on the likes of Lobster Theremin and Banoffee Pies. Review: 90s jungle and atmospheric drum & bass is lent an excitable, experimental edge by Finnish upstart ODJ Pirkka. This EP is about as radical as orthodox jungle can get, pushing the sound into ever-reaching corners of jump-up or even UK hardcore. 'OMG' is a samply, weird, choral breaks-masher, mixing in everything from dog woofing sounds to lasershots and reese womps between its rapidly fidgeting breaks variations. 'Bookworm', meanwhile, leans into more casual G-funk-whistly directions, resting on a more atmospheric waterbed, around which endless bubbles are heard popping, and reversed vocal samples mark transitions like passing mermaids. And now into their third volume of this deep, atmospheric series, the vibe, tone and spirit are fully set and getting better with every dispatch. Taken from the full digital album that comprises 13 bleeding edge slabs of timeless brutalism, this vinyl sampler highlights its extremes with these four powerful cuts. "Spiritwerk" is a straight up jungle homage with a knife-dicing vocal most of us will be more than familiar with. "Midnight Oil" lollops with tribal drum work that's so physical you can feel yourself being punched repeatedly while "The Lake" lives up to its title... Tidal grooves ebb and flow of a waterfall drum arrangement while instrumental elements land and flicker with organic glee. Very much like the eco-system it takes its name from.

Grey Skies Over Chicago
The Hand
Review: Om Unit is killing it right now. Whether he's mesmerising minds at the 80/160 axis or ripping out full-on audio attacks, his sonic execution is spotless. "Sleepwalkers" pays homage to the uncompromising Metalheadz motifs; all icy riddims and metallic bass. "Grey Skies Over Chicago" is a deeper vibe; ethereal synths moan and cry of a bed of tightly diced breaks and subtle, star-gazing arpeggios. "The Hand" completes the set on a more frenetic note; the drums are skittish, barely tamed by the faraway, naval-gazing synths and psychedelic flourishes. Each track a true treat, you won't be sleepwalking to this... You'll be sleepraving!

Connector (3:48)
Mothership Riddim (feat Mark Force) (4:34)
Adventures In Eden (7:52)
Review: Cosmic Bridge builder Om Unit continues to demonstrate near-Calibre levels of proliferation and precision. Nine months and two singles have passed since his first "Torchlight" EP and he returns with more deliciously unclassifiable slo-mo, halftime heaviness. If you're instantly won over by the deep throaty gurgle in the slurring bass on "Connector", then you'll definitely be elevated by the deep dream twinkles and arpeggios of "Adventures In Eden". If you're not shaken and stirred by the rim-shot breakage of "Mothership Riddim" then you'll definitely be buried deep in tubular bass bliss of "Transformation" or, indeed, tripped out by the growling bass and cavernous space of "Angry Buzz". Yet another immaculate creation that defies the standard pigeonholing.

Fuzzd An Soup (4:09)
Lightbody Transfer (2:52)
Review: Om Unit returns after the summer's techno session on Idle Hands, hitting hard with his second "Torchlight" EP of the year. It's every bit as deep, diverse and experimental as you'd want it to be. And it features none other than Krust as the lavish 80s synths and dense layers of "Underground Cinema" ensure the EP's soul truly is in motion. "Fuzzd An Soup" retains a certain sense of classic jungle magic with its tight infectious hang drum patterns and textures. Finally "Lightbody Transfer" is the complete switch with its sedate, torpid kicks and underwater atmosphere. Immaculate.

Review: More fresh behaviour from the Cosmic Bridge builder Om Unit. This time focusing his energies on the 150-ish section of the BPM scale, across five tracks 'Flux' takes us to some exciting places. We're disarmed by ambience ('Process'), massaged by dubby uptempo shakers ('Angels', shuffled up steppy, spacious techno ('Ramp'), twisted by contemporary electro translations ('Rubberneck') and sent back home to bed with more wonderfully abstract and ambient synth washes that bring everything together ('Autumn Shadows') Highly recommended.

Nothing (feat Rider Shafique - Sorrow remix) (4:00)
Tahatan (O$VMV$M Redux) (2:54)
Review: Om Unit's exceptional third album Self undergoes a series of reappraisals and reconstructions from an array of exciting talent. dBridge teases with a little autonomic charm and his own vocals on "What I Can Be", SKRS (Seekers International) get choppy and tropical with a swathing, murking twist on "Passages" while Sorrow takes Om Unit and Rider Shafique to touching introspective places in a barbed, evocative way that only he knows how. Finally Young Echo affiliates Neek and Jabu slide us into slow motion with the wonderfully sleepy "Tahatan". Less remixes and more brand new chapters; Cosmic Bridge never disappoint.

Wei
Review: Few artists are pushing the boundaries with as much invention as Om Unit and Sam Binga and it's great to see them collaborate again following that crucial Small Victories EP on Exit back in 2013. Facilitated by new concern Bunit, the Transatlantic EP finds the pair aligning on a similarly sweet creative groove as that Exit release, taking their sound down different avenues with a heavyweight approach to beat science the constant. If you have seen either DJ recently you will probably be familiar with the blinding halfstepper that is the title cut, and it's blessed by a further three productions that go to both light and dark places. "Onionz" veers off into break laden rufige territory, whilst "Fullbones" finds the duo easing down the tempo, and the slower pace highlights their supreme percussion and beat programming.

Electric Riddim
Review: There's some incredible creativity happening around the 80-95 mark at the moment. The once wholesome and innocent Autonomic sound has hit its teens and it's getting just a little bit bolshy. "Small Victories" still breathes with the same blissed out sweetness but there's a darker substance in the beefy underbelly. "Gamma", meanwhile, is 100 per cent unruly; steppy, tripletty and saturated in deep, immersive drone-bass, it's an instant rabble-rouser. "Squares" slouches up the rear, lolloping along, covered in a trippy texture of counter melodies. "Electric Riddim" finishes this victorious journey with a heavy nod to both classical jungle and the future

Review: Make hay while the sun shines... Binga and Unit's Bunit collaborations are rare - both in volume of pressings and in the fact they're only doing one collabo a year. Lucky for us there are four tracks to chow down on and they're all as remarkable, rich and alluring as you'd want them to be. "Optimus Prime" is almost Italo in its synth silkiness and rare groove, "2000 Dogs" is the dancehall your great grandkids will be dancing to while "Up & Under" is an all-out bubbly jungle brock out and "Baby Steps" winds down on a cinematic, emotional sci-fi finale. Beautiful stuff... Bun it at your peril.

Review: You know what they say. After 'Morning Thunder' comes afternoon sunshine, and this is certainly the case with One-Touch. After a run of jazzy, springy keys and hammering breaks comes a powerful ray of euphoric sola heat a la Krome & Time records. Looking for something just a little dark and spacious in its intention? Flip for 'Nexus' and zone the heck out. Excellent weaponry from this mysterious artist. You know what they say - One-Touch, zero-artist information available.

Backing It (7:15)
Review: Massive ambient intellijungle from UK producer One Touch, whose technical itch is evidently a difficult one to scratch. This EP is the third to be released by the mysterious Danish producer, and effortlessly lays claim to a highly respected career to come, dare we say continue. 'Knot' happily rests on a plane of indeterminacy, moving between stasis-echelons of pad and rattle, and bringing jungle back to its earlier, slightly slower-tempo'ed days, when faster pacing wasn't used to mask missed opportunities for flaunting rhythmic tekkers. One Touch pulls no punches on the variation front, with follow-upper 'Backing It' indulging the amen yet evincing no less finesse either.

Review: Released the same week as DLR's album Dreamland, DLR and Mako's Onemind project finally gets its official debut. Introduced by Goldie on Friction's Radio 1 show over a year ago, the wait for this echoes of the dubplate culture that's clearly inspired the project: icy Bluenote atmospherics, big wavy bass textures, swaggering trooper drums are all keynotes as we jostle among the re-futurised 92 tones on "Skin Dem", swathe through the cosmic paranoid fumes of "Early Evolution", skip amid the gliding synths on "2 On Each Side" and stumble blindly through the murky drums and rusty fog of the brilliantly titled Om Unit collabo "Expliciticity". Open your mind.

Review: Snappy snappy! J.Robinson's King K Rool series hits a big fat eight with this massive US/Norway free-for-all as young Nashville producer Ontology and rising Norwegian junglist Msymiakos get busy with a whole selection of originals and remixes. The twisted amens of "Serious Business" set the tone before we get progressively heavier as the EP rolls out. Highlights include the sultry soul of Ontology's remix of "Need It Bad", the dreamy-yet-slamming feels of "Take Your Socks Off First" and the straight-to-business ragga stamps of Msymiakos's remix of "Mash Down". In a while crocodile.

Keep Things Balanced (6:26)
Review: Silent Force are d&b classicists who always bring the quality with their timeless sounds. And that very much continues to be the case with this first release for the new year. It's a collab between Opal's and Kimbr that opens with 'Alive', a breakbeat lead banger with looping drums and raw snares. 'Undergrowth' is a silky number with a menacing late-night feel in the groaning pads and tense drums. 'Demon Poetry' brings some darker vibes with a prying, distorted, menacing bassline and 'Keep Things Balanced' is another well-controlled, potent drum & bass workout with jungle influences and a dystopian energy to it.
