Rawz
Rawz (12")
Cat: ALTR 001. Rel: 22 Mar 23
Rawz (5:05)
Typhoon (3:47)
Review: Forever flipping through the tempos and the styles, Artikal bossman and all-round legend J:Kenzo has the honour of being the launch artist on Alternate Recordings - a brand new label from longstanding Bristol party crew. Hot on the heels of his Metalheadz release, Kenzo keeps things d&b with both of these raffish, rugged cuts. 'RawZ' bashes and bumps in all the right places, aided by shimmering percussion and a sweet vocal stab placed at all the right moments. It's backed up by the sultry, sexy 'Typhoon' that flexes on a halftime groove for most of the track and features a smouldering vocal you'll instantly recognise. Stunning.

Bunnin' Up EP
Bunnin' Up EP (green vinyl 12")
Cat: VIBEZ93 017. Rel: 22 Jun 23
Janaway - "Reaching Out" (6:05)
InnaSelf - "Re-animate" (6:33)
Evasion - "This Way" (5:40)
Cheetah - "Bunnin'Up" (6:38)
Review: There's just no stopping Vibez '93 at the moment - the Dutch jungle label is swimming in legit gear and sharing it with the world. We're still reeling from the anonymous Punkrocker and Self Aware EPs. This time around there are names on the plates, as four artists throw down in maximum style. Janaway is up first with the ragga jungle badness of 'Reaching Out', while InnaSelf brings some more introspective pads and synth touches to their amen trickery. Evasion weaves a plush tapestry of ragged breaks, dreamy vocal licks and atmospheric flourishes for a curly advanced slice of jungle perfection and then Cheetah rounds the record off with the truly snare-rushing 'Bunnin' Up'.

Kings Town EP
Kings Town EP (transparent yellow vinyl 12")

The Jazzassins - "Evolution" (8:07)
The Jazzassins - "Bawrley" (7:10)
Paul SG - "King's Town" (6:35)
Paul SG - "Parts Of Me" (7:36)
Review: As their superb name suggests, The Jazzassins make jazz tinged drum & bass. Never was that more apparent than on this silky new split 12" for Jazzsticks Recordings, which features Paul SG on the other side. His opener 'Kings Town' is a bubbly, reagge-laced rhythm with blasts of rapping bass and tumbling drums that demand you dance. He then offers 'Parts Of Me,' a harder edge stepper with big and icy hi hats. The Jazzassins for their part seduce with 'Evolution' and then get more edgy and artsy with the hopping 'Bawrley.'

Superluminal Perspective
Superluminal Perspective (splattered vinyl 12")
Cat: SPTL 018. Rel: 19 Oct 23
Theia (6:48)
Derealization (6:25)
Quadrature (6:58)
Translight Velocity (5:54)
Review: This new 12" jungle splatter record marks a return for JLM Productions, best known in d&b circles for appearing on 4Hero's Reinforced label in the early to mid-90s, although closer research reveals JLM aka Jamie Myerson to be behind a myriad of releases of different hues for everyone from Josh Wink's Ovum to his own, prolific but unnamed 'own brand' label. Flaunting the artist's longtime talent for atmosphere incantation and breaks wizardry, all the tracks from 'Theia' to 'Translight Velocity' end up achieving the transcendental superluminality its title boasts of.

The Cartographer (6:05)
Fata Morgana (6:06)
The Navigator (6:57)
Aleya (6:32)
Review: ASC's Spatial imprint looks west for inspiration this month as they welcome a certified Reinforced OG who made a return last September after a 25 year break from this particular project (and many years from the game): New Jersey's JLM Productions. Also operating under aliases such as Sky City and P.E.P during the 90s, the JLM name was synonymous with the deeper, atmospheric sounds of jungle. And that's exactly what we have here. Four blissful, subtle and restrained atmospheric jungle cuts. Highlights include the swashbuckling breaks on 'The Navigator' and the dream-like haze of opener 'The Cartographer'. Welcome back JLM.

Damn Right!

Damn Right! (5:42)
Let Me Tell U (4:53)
Review: Bournemouth institution Drumfunk launch a brand new foundation-flavoured imprint Junglefunk. Bossman Judda takes the lead with a hardcore jungle edge. 'Damn Right!' is a concentrated headbutt of hardcore elements tightly wrapped up in a positive affirmation; big detuned stabs, rusty breaks and hypey vocal samples. 'Let Me Tell U' touches more on the ravey elements with pitched up vocals and more focus on the riff. Damn good.

Tommy The Cat - "Purple Sky" (4:55)
Tommy The Cat - "Way Back When" (2:52)
Duburban & Jahganaut - "Another" (5:32)
Zoomie - "Time Travelling At The Speed Of Life" (3:23)
Review: Dutch label Cat in the Bag builds on early momentum with a fourth EP, this time featuring label regards as well las newcomers. The main man Tommy The Cat takes care of the a-side with a brace of brilliant throwback jungle cuts. 'Purple Sky' pairs deep basslines and kinetic breakbeats with thoughtful pads and smeared cosmic ambiance that makes for something perfectly heady yet hard-hitting. 'Way Back When' is a brief but brilliant hip hop joint that you will want to last way longer than it does. Duburban & Jahganaut then bring the menace with a darting, ducking and diving d&b bomb steeped in classicism and newcomer Zoomie takes you into a world of deep hip hop beats with 'Time Travelling At The Speed Of Life.'

Review: Don't let the screen ambient opener fool you because Jaffa Kid's new album is a rave ready offering packed with acid and breakbeats that it is frankly impossible not to love. The sound designs throughout is exquisite, from the fresh drum sounds to the deep space synth lines. It's all arranged in an ever evolving fashion that keeps you on your toes from the floaty vibes of 'Chaz Lemon' to the more bristling breaks of 'Lerryunder'. 'Ilk Hummer' is another one that shows off this producer's knack for cinematic soundscapes as well as dance floor beats.
