Review: Brit-boogie obscurity alert! You might not be familiar with La Famille - a short-lived group established by jazz guitarist Alan Weekes, whose members also included then future Soul 2 Soul singer Caron Wheeler and a pre-fame Cleveland Watkiss - but in 'Dancer', they made one of the loveliest jazz-funk/boogie crossover records of the early 1980s. Originally a white label-only release and near impossible to find since, the record has long been crying out for a reissue. It has all the ingredients you'd expect - squelchy synth-bass, soulful vocals, leisurely jazz guitars, drum machine beats and an overriding sense of musical sweetness - and is presented in equally essential vocal and instrumental mix variations.

Review: Four years after its original release, tracks from Land of Light's eponymous album get a new set of remixes. Fans of Lovefingers' ESP Institute label may recall the orginal remixes, released back in 2012, and this new set are just as essential. Kuniyuki Takahashi's take on the title track sets the tone, with sensuous ambient textures and gently warbling guitars creating an atmospheric mood. Tambien's version is just as esoteric, but slightly more understated, while Seahawks rounds off this latest remix package with his take on "Bell Rock Outpost". Juddery, slow-paced drums and warm, jazzy piano lines create another beautiful piece of music - tailor-made for those sunset moments.

Review: ESP Institute excel at two things very important to labels; releasing interesting original music that spans feelings, tempos and genres yet fit into the overall aesthetical approach and enlisting some fine artists when it comes to remixes. Last year's self titled album from Land of Light, the collaborative project of ESP regular Johnny Nash and former Spectral Empire producer Kyle Martin perfectly encapsulated the former and this addendum 12" does the same for the latter. Peaking Lights, Tiago and The Backwoods all bring their respective styles to the fore in impressive fashion; in thee hands of Aaron "Peaking Lights" Coyes, "Strange Attractor" is transformed into luscious, dubby expanses nudged forth by a lazy motorik beat. Complementing this, Tiago gets his salsa on with a guitar flecked rendition of "Isle Of Tears" whilst Jap crew The Backwoods provide the defining dancefloor moment with their take on "Higher Love".

Review: This wonderful, Balearic tinged Disco rarity is gets a limited reissue. Nicolette Larson's 'Lotta Love' has long been a sought after jam, with the promo only 12" version changing hands for big dough!
Mixed by the legendary Florida born and NYC dwelling mixer and DJ extraordinaire Jim Burgess, this one straddles that gorgeous line of being a bit Rock (Neil Young wrote the track) and totally Disco in all the right ways. A truly sweet slice of music here backed with a nice cover of Sam Cooke's classic standard 'You send me'.
Often bootlegged, there's been some shoddy facsimiles kicking around over the years this high quality, official, 100% legit reissue has been lovingly remastered by Warner Brothers from the master tapes. What more can you ask for? This 2020 repress is a reproduction of the 1978 WB promo only 12" complete with Warner Brothers artwork. Essential business.

This must-check dinked 45 brings together two killer and influential jazz recordings from the early 1960s. On the A-side you'll find Yusuf Lateef's inspired cover of Alen North's 'Spartacus Love Theme', a shuffling, Latin-tinged, piano-laden affair that inspired many subsequent interpretations from fellow musical titans (think Ramsey Lewis, Carlos Santana, Eddie Harris and Bill Evans, for starters). It's an effortlessly breezy and life-affirming version that stands apart from the hard-bop jazz jams that Lateef was recording at the time. On the flip you'll find the scarce 7" edit of the Cannonball Alderley Sextet's recording of 'Brother John', a cool jazz interpretation that famously features a rare oboe solo from the track's composer (and Sextet member), Yusuf Lateef.

Review: As established by 2012's "Everytime You Cry", Leendder's soft-focus deep disco house grooves and Chaz's emphatic, loin-girding vocals complement each other perfectly. "Fed Up" is another fine example of this collaborative work. Synth-heavy with a large nod to the 80s, it's not dissimilar to the work of Fulton and Kathy Diamond. Remix-wise all bases are covered: Christoph goes for a classic deep garage strutter, Pete Herbert whisks us off to the finest, whitest sands of Balearica while Brodin adds more emphasis on the spacey disco potential. We guarantee you won't get fed up of this for a long, long time.

Review: Having been uncovered by International Feel late last year, the archival Balericisms of Len Leise now make their way over to the similarly minded Aficionado label. The five tracks on this dashing red 12" were apparently sourced from a rare cassette of rainforest swelter, and it's up to you, the consumer, how much of your time you invest in this fanciful backstory to Leise's work. Should you choose to put it to one side, you will be rewarding with a wondrous array of delicate electronics and organic instrumentation that is wholly captivating from the moment "Asmat Images" locks into groove. As with previous output on Aficionado, this won't be on the shelves for long!!

Review: Leonidas and Hobbes are old studio buddies. The duo's first collaborative release landed back in 2013 and they've been putting out occasional joint missives ever since. The Rags Of Time EP may well be their best 12" yet, though. Check, for example, the jaunty analogue nu-disco shuffle of opener "Web of Intrigue", where lo-fi synthesizer melody lines, Mexican horn samples and decidedly Balearic guitar solos wrap themselves around a gently bouncing groove. Or, for that matter, the "Acid Rain" mix of "Heavy Weather", a cheery triple-time workout built around clicking drum machine hits, thrillingly dusty synth stabs and tipsy electronics. The slightly jauntier and dreamier "Dawn Mix" of the same track is also rather tasty.

Review: Pnuma picks up with its fourth release by introducing Let's Go Outside. After releases by established artists such as Lee Van Dowski & Quenum, Dan Curtin and Scape One, the label ventures out further into unchartered territory to bring the sleazefest that is "I'll Lick Your Spine". Let's Go Outside resides in Portland, Oregon where he first released on small local experimental label, Buried In Time. He then moved onto Brighton-based Midnight Recordings before being picked up by Pnuma shortly after. Citing his influences as "techno, techno, techno and Tetris", "I'll Lick Your Spine" also takes inspiration from IDM, ambient and electro to bring a slutty little number. With the fiendishly sexy vocals of Christina Broussard the track is like a lusty vampire luring you in only to leave you bloodied and torn.
