Life's Better With Disco
Cat: ZEDD 12324. Rel: 09 Nov 21
Firefly - "Love Is Gunna Be On Your Side" (Dave Lee Love Emergency mix) (9:42)
Ruffneck - "The Power - The Rhythm" (Backroom Productions Feel The music mix) (5:17)
Johnny Dynell - "Rhythm Of Love" (Larry Levan Garage dub) (5:33)
Doug Willis - "Doug's Disco Theme" (Doug Disco mix) (7:18)
Review: In its full digital form, Z Records' excellent Life's Better With Disco Comp is an epic 37 tracks deep. Naturally there aren't that many cuts on this sampler 12", but the four on show are undoubtedly amongst the set's many highlights. Boss man Dave Lee kicks things off via a superb classic disco-meets-nu-disco revision of Firefly's 'Love Is Gunna Be On Your Side', before there's a chance to cop an obscure Backroom Productions rework of their early proto-house/garage-house gem (as Ruffneck), 'The Power - The Rhythm'. The mid-'80s fun continues on Larry Levan's vintage remix of Jonny Dynell's 'Rhythm of Love' - a killer fusion of dubbed-out synths and drums and Konk style Latin percussion - while Doug Willis' 'Doug's Disco Theme' is a classic disco-house number from Lee under one of his many alternative aliases.

Hustle With Every Muscle
Cat: ZEDD 12395. Rel: 31 Mar 25
Hi Tension - "British Hustle" (Dave Lee Brit Funk Revenge mix) (9:14)
Funky Worm - "Hustle To The Music" (Dave Lee Re-Wriggle) (6:59)
Foreal People - "Tango Hustle" (Dave Lee Latican Hustle) (7:09)
Foreal People - "Tango Hustle" (acappella) (1:41)
Hustle Beats (4:31)
Review: Z Records returns with a Hustle-tastic 12" to light up both your life and DJ sets. It's the boss himself Dave Lee who kicks off with his extended rework of a bonafide Brit Funk classic in the shape of Hi Tension's 'British Hustle'. Featuring David Josephs's signature vocals over the chugging Caribbean rhythm track, it's a song that's never received an extended club mix from the tapes since its first release in 1978. His second cut is a Re-Wriggle of a Funky Worm volume pumping classic that becomes a fat-bottomed house jam with stomping brass, ear-worm vocal hooks and Latin inspired keys. "On the flip' (as they say) is Foreal People's 'Tango Hustle' - a driving clav heavy, jazz funk workout complete with chanting dance instructions over various solos. Add in an acapella and some 'Hustle Beats' and you have a very muscular package.

Attack On The Dancefloor Vol 14
Cat: ZEDD 12281. Rel: 02 Oct 19
Delia Renee - "You're Gonna Want Me Back" (Joey Negro Disco Blend) (7:59)
Foreal People - "Shake" (Dr Packer Re-shake) (6:47)
Z Factor - "Gotta Keep Pushin" (Grant Nelson remix) (6:32)
Four80East & CeCe Peniston - "Are You Ready?" (Joey Negro Redemption mix) (7:03)
Review: If you're looking for a great selection of house and disco club cuts, you can't beat Z Records "Attack The Dancefloor" Series. The latest volume begins with the revivalist disco brilliance of label founder Dave Lee AKA Joey Negro's remix of Delia Renee's "You're Gonna Want Me Back", before moving on to the slightly more house-centric modern disco vibes of Dr Packer's superb revision of vintage Dave Lee production (as Foreal People) "Shake". Over on side B, Grant Nelson offers up a filter-sporting disco-house revision of Z Factor classic "Gotta Keep Pushin", before Lee dons the Joey Negro alias one more time to wrap ear-catching church organ solos around a gospel-influenced house groove on an excellent remix of Four80East and CeCe Peniston's "Are You Ready?".

A Slap Around The Bass EP (Dave Lee remixes)
Cat: ZEDD 12321. Rel: 22 Feb 22
The Sunburst Band - "Magnificent Mango" (Journey To The Fruit mix) (8:11)
Bah Samba - "Save Our Freedom" (Let Freedom Reign mix) (8:02)
Foreal People - "In The Mood To Groove" (Aurra Of Life mix) (7:58)
Foreal People - "In The Mood To Groove" (Aurra Of Life instrumental) (7:29)
Review: Like many disco, boogie and jazz-funk heads, Z Records supremo Dave Lee has long been a fan of rubbery bass guitar, and in particular slap-bass. This EP, which boasts a quartet of his own remixes from the label's vaults, is a veritable slap-bass extravaganza. He sets the tone with a fabulous revision of Sunburst Band's Earth, Wind & Fire-inspired 'Mango Madness' that adds killer slap bass solos to a 'Brazilian Rhyme' style backing track, before offering up a superb, jazz-funk-fired soulful house revision of Bah Samba's 'Save Our Freedom'. Over on the flip he doffs a cap to Salsoul boogie act Aurra via slap-bass-heavy vocal and instrumental revisions of Foreal People's 'In The Mood To Groove'; both takes are little less than superb slabs of early '80s boogie brilliance.

Banzai - "Runaway"
Review: For the latest volume in their crate-digging disco series, Under The Influence, Z Records has turned to long-serving British brothers Simon and Robin Lee AKA Faze Action. In keeping with the series' dusty-fingered ethos, there's plenty of brilliant rarities to set the pulse racing - see the smooth '80s boogie of Leston Paul's "All Nite Tonight", the sublime Afro-disco brilliance of Bebe Manga, the up-tempo hustle of Oscar Perry's "Body Movements" and the South American disco swirl of Don Lurio's "Ruba Ruba" - as well as a smattering of obscure versions of classic dancefloor hits (check Michele Claire's version of "In The Bush"). You'll also find a smattering of killer Faze Action edits, too, with their version of Midway's "Set It Out" and Mikki's freestyle-era boogie ham "Dance Lover" standing out.
