Sparkling Controversy
Review: Hot on the heels of Floating Points' excellent King Bromeliad EP - a belated return to his deep house roots smothered in tactile jazz - comes this one-sided 12" single. "Sparkling Controversy" is a previously unreleased dub of "ARP3" from 2011's expansive double-EP Shadows. While the original saw Sam Shepherd recalling Moodymann's greatest deep jazz-house moments, "Sparkling Controversy" has a little more of a garage-flecked bounce. The warm Rhodes chords, darting synths and dewy-eyed melodies that marked out the original track are still present, and perfectly compliment Shepherd's warm, tooled-up rhythm. Its every bit as immersive and touchy-feely as the 2011 original, just a little weightier, with added punch to the percussion.

Satisfy (Brassica mix)
Satisfy (John Talabot Rain mix)
Review: Second time round for Bicep's 2013 single Satisfy, which sees the early Italian house influenced melodic rush of the breakbeat-clad original moulded into new shapes by Brassica and John Talabot. Pleasingly, both producers deliver radical reinterpretations, with Brassica in particular impressing with a fluid, dreamy take full of vintage synthesizers, humid low-end grooves and tropical textures. Talabot meanwhile builds a bright-eyed, atmospheric deep house groove out of analogue electronics, vintage synths, darting melodies and a sublime, shuffling rhythm. Major props to the Boys from Belfast, who've thought outside the box - certainly with the choice of Brassica - on this excellent remix package.

Sofwans (3am mix)
Souffrance (dub mix)
Review: The Sofrito Super Singles series is on the cusp of double figures and this offering from collective main man Frankie Francis and the excellent Simbad might just be their best work so far. As ever with Sofrito, there's a sense of music education that comes with this record as the label shines the light on Gwo Ka - the folkloric rhythm of Guadeloupe - and one of its greatest voices in Esnard Boisdur. The focus here is Bosidur's 1991 track "Soufwans" (which translates as Sufferance for those not au fait with Guadeloupian) which in the hands of Francis and Simbad is flipped into a hypnotic house production replete with deep bassline and some killer synths. The accompanying dub mix will probably appeal to the deeper house selectors too as there's some killer drum programming on that one.

The Hybrid
Someone (Brett Dancer Unreleased dub)
Something
Review: For the latest release on his NDATL imprint, Kai Alce has reached to a long-standing but oft-overlooked stalwart of the deep house circuit, Brett Dancer. With releases on Track Mode reaching back to 1994, Dancer has been active one way or another right the way through, and these three jams find him in fine fettle. "The Hybrid" certainly sports plenty of Midwest soul in its warming synth lines and soulful outlook, while the inherent spirit of techno noticeably keeps the track pushing forwards. Dancer's "Unreleased Dub" of "Someone" comes draped in similar styles, with the added injection of vocal licks and pattering bongos, before "Something" takes on a more obviously house tone for the deeper end of the night.

Sideral
Sideral (Matt Karmil remix)
Review: Given their pedigree and the mature musicality of their productions, you'd expect this first 12" from John Talabot and Axel Boman's Talaboman project to be pretty darn good. "Sideral" - dedicated to a genre-straddling Barcelona DJ who passed away back in 2006 - is certainly special, with the original version offering an intoxicating, bright-eyed fusion of dense, African-influenced percussion, bass-heavy bottom end, attractive chords and thrilling, upbeat melodies. It's tinged with sadness - as many of Talbot's best productions tend to be - but comes across as more celebratory than melancholic. Matt Karmil provides the flipside remix, lacing the duo's notable synth melodies over a hissing, hypnotic techno groove.

Surf Dude
Review: Swedish producer HNNY has risen to prominence over the last couple of years, followed a superb series of self-released 12" singles on Puss, plus impressive EPs for Let's Play House and Local Talk. Here, he pops up on new label Yummy with a delightfully simple but deliciously playable single-sided release. "Surf Dude" places a baggy, Balearic guitar loop on top of a chunky, shuffling rhythm, and works it impeccably throughout, dropping in and out, adding filters, and so on. There's not much too it, but it works brilliantly, coming on like a lost Mark E jam from his early Balearic period. There's no finer praise than that.

Review: Vibes New & Rare Music 2 reaches it's conclusion here as Rush Hour drop the second and final double vinyl helping of the Rick Wilhite curated compilation with a suitably high profile cast of contributors involved. If you checked Part One which dropped earlier this year, you'll know Wilhite has expanded the remit to include producers from Chicago and New York - and if you didn't check it what's wrong with you! Any compilation that starts with an exclusive cut from Moodymann is gonna be good, and the dusty, disjointed "Momma" sets the tone quality wise for what follows. The Godson himself delivers a thunderous, stripped back take on "A Matter of Honour" by Sean Tate and this dukes it out with the apocalyptic electro of DJ Stingray and the rugged beatdown of Orlando Voorn as our favourites from this great collection.

It’s All Over (John Talabot Stripped refix)
It’s All Over (Locked Groove rendition)
Review: Hivern Disc completists will know all about It's All Over; originally released last year as an uncredited one sided 12" that inaugurated the Barcelona label's Blanc series. Due to its highly limited nature, the 12" has developed something of a cult status (with some really shocking Discogs prices to boot) and it was later revealed to be the work of Pional when John Talabot included a Locked Groove remix on his much loved DJ-Kicks mix. The label had apparently always planned to give "Its All Over" the wider release it deserves, and here they are presenting a 12" that features the aforementioned Locked Groove "Rendition" as well as a killer stripped refix from Mr Talabot. Another fine release from the Hivern crew.

Work That Shit (Steaward dub)
Track For Aya
Review: Since launching with an EP from co-founder DJ Steaw, Rennes outpost Rutilance Recordings has steered a course through the Deep House waters that doffs it's cap to both the classic sounds of French house and the deepness of Kerri Chandler. Their fifth release casts the spotlight on Lyon and budding production talent Fabrizio Ortella whose Mad In Lyon EP falls snugly into Rutilance's defined aesthetic. Lead track "Reflex" sets the tone, with classy pads oozing out over some indecipherable field recordings and snappy drum programming, whilst "X Rated" ups the energy and heads into classic groove territory augmented by little vocal samples that you can guess the tone of from the title. Steaward opens the flip with a ghetto flecked dub of "Work That Shit" which shows his production confidence right now, whilst "Track For Aya" rounds out the release on a more chunky house vibe.

Look Down At Your Feet Below
58, 26, 34 & 20
Review: Last year saw Gerd Janson and Maurice Fulton shake hands on a deal that Bubbletease Communications fans had long been hoping for, with Running Back penning a deal to reissue some of the producer's digi only work on vinyl. The first fruits came in the shape of the Syclops album A Blink Of A Eye (featuring THAT track) and now Running Back turn to the sublime combination of Fulton on production and Mutsumi on vocals. Both tracks here are taken from the artist formerly known as Mu's 2010 self titled LP. As with most, if not all, Fulton productions, the music here sounds like little else and still totally ahead of the game some four years after it's digital release. Described by Running Back as "hard-hittin-freak-out dance tracks", those looking for the perfect blend of Fulton's squelchy acid instrumentation and Mutsumi's wild vocals are advised to check this post-haste.

Poems For You
Review: Since last appearing on Quintessentials, Berlin dwelling Borrowed Identity has seen his profile ratchet up with releases on Fina, Mistress and Stripped And Chewed leading up to a commission to contribute to Ryan Elliott's Panorama Bar mix. The Sexo Bonito EP is a fine time for some further exercises in sassy deep house for Quintessentials. "Shake" bumps along impressively, doffing a hat to classic U.S house via diva vocal samples, chunky bottom-end and wavy chords. "Get Down" reaches for the organs, placing them at the centre of a hustling groover that benefits greatly from some rubbery synth bass and delay-laden vocal samples. Finally, "Poems For You" is warm and calming. It sounds like the sort of thing you'd expect to hear drifting from the speakers at some beachside bar in hotter climes.

Coming Through
Review: After time spent establishing a sound on Austere Recordings, Laak has been invited over to Contrast-Wax for a solo EP, and the sound of the Invocations EP fits comfortably alongside the likes of Alex Danilov, Brad Peterson and BLM. The EP kicks off with "Invoke A Response", a driving deep house jam built around arpeggios and energetic synth lines for an uptempo end result, which contrasts neatly with the easy roll of the bongo-laden "Cadedance". "Recant" nudges back into more intricate territory with a cheeky square wave bass line and slick hi hat shuffle, before "Coming Through" cools things off with a crafty broken beat excursion that works a little acid into the bottom end of the mix.

Wild Grass (Ben Boe 16Bit remix)
Wild Grass (Madurai Raj dub)
The Snake Charmer (bonus track)
Review: After a standout contribution to the 2012 v/a 12" Prepared Halal Vol 2, Anaxander and Boe meet once again and it's a more substantial offering from the producer this time with Travelogues wedged somewhere between EP and mini LP. Given that remixes from Ben Boe and Madurai Raj feature on the flip it's probably best to call this an EP but regardless, it does find Anaxander laying down a selection of killer percussive grooves. "Wild Grass" makes for a wonderfully insouciant opener with subtle calypso undertones, whilst the heady grit of "Night Train" demonstrates Anaxander can operate at a darker hue too. Ben Boe's take on "Wild Grass" is straight up house deepness like you have come to expect from the label, whilst the Raj effort swerves into leftfield beatdown territory. Lo fi house rattler "The Snake Charmer" is excellent too!

Psy Lance (8:26)

Preacha Bonus (5:08)
Review: It's been a while since Zolta Pal last used the Jaffa Surfa alias. In fact, his last outing under the pseudonym dropped three years ago on Houseworx (the US garage-flavoured Pimpin' EP). This three-tracker happily finds him in fine form, delivering a more tech-tinged trio of aquatic deep house cuts. There's naturally plenty to enjoy, from the subterranean shuffle and liquid melodies of "Bazz" and heavy percussive bump of "Psy Lance" - all thickset, multi-tracked drums, calming pads and fizzing electronics - to the beatless bliss of "Preacha Bonus", which - unsurprisingly given the title - features a deep south preacher chatting over heady ambient chords.

Hide Your Love
Rhumba La Fusion
Review: It's a busy time for Anthony Nicholson and the Clairaudience imprint, as this new release finds the deep house mainstay kicking off a new alias with which to offer up more of his top-shelf, soul-infused productions. "Hide Your Love" is classic Nicholson, as a searching set of piano chords and vibes flirt shamelessly with pattering conga lines and plenty more besides, calling to mind a French flavour in the process. "Rhumba Fusion" has, unsurprisingly, more of a Latino feel in its tumbling broken beats and joyous vocal contributions, packing everything you could wish for in a rootsy house track that spans the generations.

Cossway - "Boxwise"
Review: Helsinki imprint Common Labour is continuing to shape out its vision for deep house with its third release, bringing in a wider cast of contributors to lay down the warm and friendly grooves alongside existing label champs PothOles. Powel is up first with the gentle, discofied breeze of "Swivel Fold" before PothOles bring in a slower, freakier vibe rich in heady synth textures. Jussi Pekka has a more broad appeal in mind with the rousing arpeggios and heartfelt melancholy of "Ghost Of Lust", and then Cossway shakes things up with the lively pace and abstract tones of "Boxwise".

The End Of An Ear
Peace & Reflection
Review: Berlin based cohorts Ekkohaus and Rufus (also part of Tru West and Nightdrivers) consummate their friendship with this four-track mission statement that deals in gutsy house music with a range of moods to suit every corner of the night. "Studer" is a cheeky cut with jazzy key flurries and a fulsome bassline squelch, while "Pagan" takes a tougher route into heavy delay feedback and pure rhythmic intensity. "The End Of An Ear" is a playful beast that takes off-key melodies and oddball noises and works them into a moody, heavy grooving context, while "Peace & Reflection" pushes the swing past the brink for a leftfield house jam that sounds liable to fall apart at any minute, in a good way of course.

Review: Made up of Sergio Munoz (formerly known as Delete) and Israel Sunshine, Fur Coat have been resplendent on Crosstown Rebels for some three years now with their warm, romantic take on tech house. On their latest single, the pair wring out a tense rhythmic roller in the form of "U Turn" which makes the most of plucking string sounds and heartfelt synth warbles, while "Borsch" adds even more drama into the mix with a nagging one-note hook and brooding low end growls. "Mumbata" finishes the EP off with a more reflective piece that packs no less punch in the synth department but keeps the overall mood a mellow one.

Delta
Review: The Point G series from DJ Gregory continues apace with a fifth installment, sporting a double dose of house goodness from the French DJ legend. There's a notable crunch and punch to the swinging analogue percussion here, which sits somewhere between broken beat, 808 electro and his once renowned Africanism-era Afro-house productions. "Delta" peppers its staccato rhythm with exotic vocal samples and occasional chords, but wisely lets the groove do the talking. There's a slightly sweatier, bassier feel to "Bona", even though it revolves around the same sparse but hard-hitting elements.
