For The People (6:17)
Object Of My Affection (4:45)
Target Velocity (5:07)
What Happened To Us All (4:06)
Review: For Holding Hands chief Desert Sound Colony, dark, eyes down, bass heavy grooves are his first love when it comes to electronic music. He created a label with a slightly deeper angle to accommodate this sort of thing named Holding Hands Submerged. Previous EPs have come from Yosh and Mariin, and this one comes from Washington D.C. based James Bangura - who presented an awesome EP on Mister Saturday Night earlier this year. For The People features another collection of off-kilter cuts by the rising producer: from the introspective dub house of the title track, to the contorted techno/bass hybrid of 'Target Velocity' or the hypnotising post dubstep antics of 'What Happened To Us All' - Bangura is an artist we're definitely keeping our eyes on this year.

Control Tower Observations (John Heckle mix)
Review: New label Scenery drops the debut EP from Bantam Lions which features two special remixes from John Heckle. Pressed on heavyweight 180 gram vinyl, "One To One" opens with piqued pan pipes, funky synths and subtle saxophones allowing John Heckle to bring the jack and analogue persuasion in his high energy remix. Shuffled hats, dusty scraps and spooked out rhodes make up "Control Tower Observations". John Heckles this time pitches down the original's rhodes, throwing in some extra claps to ensure his trademark percussion concussion drum programming is kept in tact.

Robo Porn (6:49)
Eye Contact (6:32)
Subdrama (5:54)
The Crimson Boogie (6:08)
Review: Not referring to the Star Wars character, but the river through Damascus that the Lebanese-born Dubai DJ and producer takes their name from, 'Music For High Maintenance Robots' sounds like the sort of music they play at the Mos Eisley Cantina. A fantastic mixture of electro-funk, with jazz and techno elements sprinkled in, tracks like 'Eye Contact' feel like soundtracks from early 2000s arcade street racing games with its Eurotrance and club classics contemporaries, doubly so for sub-bass electro house bop 'Subdrama' and its winding, rhythmic bassline. 'The Crimson Boogie' feels reminiscent of Moe Shop, and its glitchy pop derivation of Japanese city pop tropes and aesthetics. The guitars and grooves on the EP are straight up fun and it's hard not to jam along to, even for the most hardcore arcade racer hater.

Zarenzeit - "We Are All The Same " (4:17)
Review: Deep Inspiration Show Records is back with a second part of its Global Essence Sampler and it is another 12" that offers great nourishment for mind, body and soul. Barce from Spain featuring Roger Versey opens up with some slow but heavy house grovers awash with rugged synth loops. Dan Piu's 'Ocean' is an aquatic and dubby roller for bliss doit vibes, and Zarenzeit taps into dreamy old school Italo house on 'Heard Echoes.' The same three artists appear in the same order on the flip with three other originals which tap into deeper Detroit schools of house, Balearic and electro stylings.

Walk Right In
Laying Low
Get Real
Don't Look
Viewpoint
Review: Boston operation Supply Records have proved to be a label to watch, focusing on quality releases from B tracks and Rene Audiard's sublime Pechorin LP, and this new release from 50% of B Tracks and label co-owner John Barera supplies further proof (sorry) The title track to Walk Right In pays obvious homage to Black Box's "Ride On Time" in its vocal, while heroic piano chords and loose, almost out of time drums in "Lying Low" take place alongside similar sounding synths used in Caribou's "Sun". "Get Real" verges on dubby house had it not been for its Legowelt-like musicality. Walking keys and chilled out Rhodes then work in time to cleverly cut up vocals and a funky bassline in "Don't Look". Barera opts for some killer sustained Rhodes deepness on the final cut "Viewpoint", with snare rolls, machine drumming and high pitched strings adding to the melancholia.

The Bog (6:57)
Review: The Supply crew's John Barera and Will Martin team up again but this time it's for Steve Mizek's Argot imprint, and the duo have duly supplied their familiarly dusty brand of house music. The title track "1 2 3 (Feels Right)" is sparse, raw as hell and synth-heavy, while "Hide Tide" is a little ore low-key and loose around the edges. Over on the B-side, "Spin Cycle" unleashes a bubbling low-end underneath a grainy, swinging kick-snare approach, whereas "The Bog" winds the tempo right down resulting in a wonderfully abstract vision of house and techno.

Yen
Review: Supply Records returns with a seventh release which finds Will Martin make his label debut and build on the budding production partnership with John Barera, which commenced with a standout contribution to a various artists 12" on Dolly last year. Much like "Reality" from that aforementioned release on Steffi's label, the four tracks here commence on a disco flecked tip with "Awake" which is filled with driving soulful strings and cracking drums. Classic Rhodes punctuate "Say It Now" whilst the flip shows a different side to the pairing with "Unknown Factor" heading into stab heavy techno territory, whilst title track "Yen" displays Martin and Barera's mastery of haunting atmospheres. Supply meets demand once again!

Apa (4:43)
Review: Saint Wax Edit Service joins the rather populated edit market with a first new release here, but thankfully it stands proud with four killer cuts. First up is Kasih's 'Baronga', a nice slow and seductive disco vibe with island overtones and reggae rhythms. Pantai Sika's 'Baronga' then pumps up the party with fat bottomed drums and lead horns that gets hands in the air. Hatiku's take on the same track is a slower one with sensuous chords and soulful female vocals over the loopy drums while Apa's vision for 'Baronga' is more upbeat and funky with big horns and rickety drums down low. A useful package.

Maximiljan - "Break FM" (5:58)
Review: Tobias Holzel and Daniel Napolitano's Rough stable cook up another special vinyl only V/A ensemble and the results are every bit as delicious as you'd expect. Sinnmusik's Georgi Barrel takes the first bite with a chugging Theo Parrish style groove washed in minor key mysticism. Dub Jamz continue their Tuff Jam mission with the UKG 4x4 flavoured "Pushin'" while Thomas strips us right back to the root notes with a jazzy heads-down odyssey. Finally Rough's latest family member Maximilijan continues to prove his position with a reflective, piano tinkling groove that blushes with raw breakbeat charm. A cut above.

Humming Birds (Ugly Drums acid dub)
Raw Material
Raw Material (Fred P re-shape)
Review: German producer Benedikt Brachtel has previously been found collaborating with Ogris Debris amongst others, and now he steps up to City Fly with some tough rhythmic studies that will lend themselves to DJs plenty. "Humming Birds" does sport some synth work scattered in amongst the titular coos and straight-up jack drums, but even the bassline is committed to the unflinching stomp rather than anything more esoteric. Ugly Drums' "Acid Dub" of the original instantly puts a kink in those works and drops some bouncy 303 action in for good measure. "Raw Material" is all drum love, finding a hooky groove and filling it with insistent percussion for maximum body response, before Fred P throws down a punchy but typically dreamy version to smooth the EP out.

Review: Lars Bartkuhn is the co-founder (alongside brother Marek Bartkuhn and Yannick Elverfeld) of revered Frankfurt label Needs Music. The Nomad EP features the absolutely sublime "Nomand (Full Experience)" a bittersweet and emotive journey through techno-soul that's reminiscent of Jazzanova via John Beltran; this track is pure ecstasy and when that Spanish guitar comes in, it's one of those 'wow' moments! The reprise of the track is pure bliss, focusing in on that guitar sound and some immersive ambient atmosphere. On the flip we've also got the uplifting deep house vibes of "Tokyo Burning" which sounds more on the Ron Trent tip; this one's great too!

You & Me (Matt Karmil remix)
Review: Bas Amro first released on Freerange back in 2011, and now he makes his 12" debut on Jimpsters label after a three year absence from releasing music. It's a strong and organic return and this record sees Freerange plunge further into the deep house murkiness. For lovers of Brawther and the My Love Is Underground label "You & Me" should push the right buttons, while over on the B-side vocals - similar to Scissor & Threads' Frank & Tony - can be enjoyed on "Across The Street" featuring Kennifer. Matt Karmil, who released on Tim Sweeney's Beats In Space label earlier this year, crafts a stripped back remix of the title-track, while making sure not to remove all of the melodic elements.

Petals
Review: Fresh from his sojourns into more leftfield terrain on All Caps as Ekranoplan alongside Kowton, Julio Bashmore switches focus back to his upcoming debut LP with another Broadwalk 12". Lead track "Simple Love" is really a masterclass in melding the dancefloor with poppy intentions, as Bashmore lays out an impeccably produced house cut - big crisp drum programming, deftly filtered synths, booming bassline - all finished off with a sweet vocal hook from J Danna. On the flip "Petals" feels drawn from the same palette as Bashmore's Velour project with Hyetal, though the velvety thick melodic work are applied to a super tough house flex that's deftly cut up.

Pelican
Review: Despite now mixing it with house music's global cognoscenti, Julio Bashmore has enjoyed a rather quiet year, production wise. Just as well, then, that "Husk" is arguably his most interesting release for some time. Built around the twin attractions of a twittering melody that sounds like it was taken from a record by long-forgotten early 90s ambient act Paradise X and some hissing jazz cymbals, "Husk" is more melodic, adventurous and touchy-feely than anything else he's done of late. "Pelican", meanwhile, is more typical of his previous work and should excite all those who bristle with excitement at his classic 2011 productions.

Battle For Middle You (Maurice Donovan dub)
Ask Yourself (Midland remix)
Review: PMR set the bar high with their first release from Bristol's flame haired tyke Julio Bashmore, and the label promises much more with material from L-Vis 1990 and Two Inch Punch in the coming months. A further flex of credentials is shown on this twelve, with two of the tracks that made up Bashmore's debut getting the remix treatment from the Leeds House Mafia, David Kennedy and Midland. Kennedy adopts the Chicago House legend alias of Maurice Donovan to remix "Battle For Middle You", adding a certain drunk charm to those neon synth lines, whilst there's a satisfying crunch to the beats. Complementing this is a superlative reworking of "Ask Yourself" from rising talent Midland which retains the core brilliance of the original but dips it in a sumptuous sonic mist.

Track 3
Review: It was another huge year for Mr .Bashmore, the Bristol kid who surpassed all expectations and he also started his own label, Broadwalk Records on which to release his own material, the first of which was the massive Au Seve. The title track is a perfect fusion of London and Chicago, where hefty doses of sub-bass meet slicing hi-hats and 4/4 kicks, while "Troglodytes" is a peculiar beat workout, where steady drums go head to head with nostalgic flute implementations and a cheeky vocal sample hopping in and out. On the flipside, "First Odyssey" enters more unexpected territories and the regular kicks are now re-shuffled into a two-step inspired anthem - leaving enough space for delayed guitar chords and melancholic vocals to come in and break things down.

Low Simmer
Review: Jason Li always knows how to take acidic house and techno to next level of hyper-resolution, injecting more colour, sparkle and punch into his drums and synths than many other producers could even dream of. So it is on Distant Lines, his latest offering which surfaces on Spanish label Fanzine. The title track is prime BSU material, as cascading 303 lines meet with twinkling arrays of synth over yearning bass, while the drums splatter out a merry madness of vintage jack. "Thaw" is a more measured affair, reining the beats back and letting a more reflective melodic section take hold. "Low Simmer" meanwhile manages to strike a neat balance between the two, ramping up the rhythmic energy whilst keeping the nagging synth lines in check.

Clouds (long version)
Review: Ahead of the eagerly anticipated album Motional Response, due for release soon on Jerome Derradji's Still Music imprint, Toronto's Basic Soul Unit drops this 12" taster featuring album tracks not available on the album's vinyl release. "Breathe" is a mid-tempo, piano-drenched deep house number, with the sultry vocals of Sacha Williamson providing the perfect foil for the producer's crunchy drums and raw analogue bass. It's accompanied by Derradji's remix, in which the original is transformed into something between techno and proto-house, sitting the vocal atop ascending pads and a pulsating build-up of unfiltered analogue madness which nonetheless maintains a sense of decorum throughout. The B-side is devoted to a long version of album cut "Clouds", a typically deep BSU cut which demonstrates his ability to journey through satisfying analogue squelch and ethereal chords whilst keeping things jacking. If the rest of the album is this good we're in for a treat.

Eddie Niguel - "Absolute" (Secret Cinema remix)
Review: With this 12", Midnight Shift demonstrates their ambitions with aplomb; the Singapore based label only launched last year but already they are expanding beyond their original remit with a newly established remix series. The first release in this series sees festival headliners Deetron and Secret Cinema rework the tracks from Basic Soul Unit and Eddie Niguel that launched Midnight Shift. Swiss house don Deetron focuses on Stuart Li's "Black Ice" turning in a re-edit that polishes the original's crystalline notes whilst beefing up the pulsing bassline. On the Dutch producer Secret Cinema aka Jeroen Verheij offers a driving, hypnotic rendition of Eddie Niguel's "Absolute".

DJ Cream - "40100" (7:17)
Review: There's an undeniably classic house feel about this debut EP from Italy's Bolo Represent, a label set up to showcase the work of Bologna-based producers. Bassa Clan opener "051" rolls along like an early morning DJ Sneak production, with jazzy keys and hypnotic synth stabs riding a bustling groove. Jackie drops some spacey, bass-heavy deep house in the shape of "Da B-Touch", while Nudge's "Jus I" sounds like Simoncino's woozier work after several high-grade jazz cigarettes. Arguably best of all, though is DJ Cream's "40100", which comes on like a long lost dream house-era tribute to the organ-heavy sound of New Jersey garage.

In honour of the popular deep house label's tenth anniversary, they've splashed out on some new remixes. Unification (6:37)
Review: Italian producer based in Berlin who runs Uaudio with Eternauta has affiliations with the LiveJam and Relative (via Sperimentazioni Sonore) crew, so you know what you're in for here. It's tough and dusty analogue house attacks at street level on the A side with "Track 1" a loopy and overdriven funky disco house cut. It sounds like DJ Sneak on PCP. Meanwhile "Aware" exercises a bit more restraint on this deep acid number, it seems, until the 808 kick comes in and stomps all over your ears. On the flip "What Am I Supposed To Do Now" follows in suit, a sample repeats that very refrain over a decayed and rust encrusted groove while closer "Unification" has some emotive pads trying to hypnotise you if not for the track's jagged and disjointed sense of swing trampling all over you in the process.

Review: Sacred Rhythm head honcho Joe Claussell must be one of the most relentless artists out there. Each new weekly seemingly brings more of his spiritually intense reworks and this time out he is doing his thang to two tracks by The Bayaya Citizens. His take on 'The Mofocongoietric' is arresting thanks to its taught synths and off-grid keys all colouring in a prickly, percussive groove. Bazbaz has previously been spotted working alongside the likes of Djebali and Litmus, while Alessio Viggiano comes fresh from a sterling 12" on discotech Wax. Review: There's something previously matter-or-fact about this debut EP from FUSE offshoot LOCUS's new multi-artist series, LCS TRAX. Musically it's as on-point as you'd expect, with the assembled artists and tracks prioritising no-holds-barred peak-time fun. In its original A-side form, "Hey Ladies" sees the rising star top a sweaty, all-action house beat with dreamy chords, layered R&B/soul vocals, deliciously dirty bass and waves of angular, mind-altering acid lines. It's a brilliant combination of elements all told, with Boo's smart production and on-point arrangement making it a genuine peak-time banger for underground DJs. The accompanying vocal-free Dub Mix is superb, too, with the Swede replacing sampled R&B snippets with bubbly electronic motifs and even wilder acid lines.

Review: BDK samples and edits disco classics on his third release on Say Namm. The record has four tracks that are full of energy, soul and fun, showing off his disco skills and taste with the funkiest of elements. 'Let's Dance' on the A-side is a catchy and energetic track that samples Bowie's iconic song and adds a funky twist. Over on the flip is 'Thelma': a soulful and uplifting track that samples Houston's vocals from a certain classic hit, while adding some funky instruments. Finally, over on the flip there's 'Just Begun', a funky and energetic track that samples Castor and adds some synths and scratches.

Istanbul (4:36)
Pablo's Dog (4:11)
Stateless (8:22)
Do/Don't (4:05)
Review: London's Mysticisms imprint reissues a 1993 release by enigmatic Manchester quartet B:dum B:dum Sound. Merging their backgrounds in post-punk through dub and their city's vibrant dance scene, their sole 12" (originally funded by the Bolton Art Council) incorporates samples, sound design and middle eastern influences on what is now a cherished item among diggers and earning exorbitant amounts on the secondhand market. From the bass-driven exotic enchantment of 'Istanbul', they take a slow-mo version of bleep and mix it with dub techno on the mesmerising groove of 'Stateless' (which was well ahead of its time) as well as the deep dub of 'Do Don'ts' providing perfect armchair riddims.

Review: Park Way has been a much loved label for retro sounding house jams over many years. Now they have a new one from Joey Beads that gain fide a perfect sweet spot between invention and revivalism. The lead tune 'Sprit Call' is a lush bit of deep house with some magic chords and keys, prickly hi hats and plenty of loose bongos. The flip has three remixes by Mark Seven that all relate to different times in the night or early morning. The 6Am call is out pick - it's all gentle keys, hollow grooves and reflective moods that takes you miles away from the here and now.

Miles Then McCoy (Agaric remix)
Review: Autoreply offshoot Stuga Musik picks up where it left off with another three tracks of deadly effective, club-friendly madness. Having held a residency at Berlin's legendary Bar 25 club and recording for high calibre labels such as District of Corruption, Thema and Little Helpers, Beaner is welcomed into the Stuga family. He serves up "Miles Then McCoy", a nine minute epic that effortlessly fuses tight linear drum programming with freeform sound design and loose instrumentals that thunder along towards an exciting climax. Patrik Skoog aka Agaric is undoubtedly one of Sweden's best loved techno exports - he's responsible for the world famous We Are series not to mention the fact that his "Who Made Up The Rules" on Ovum is currently holding Groove Magazine's esteemed #1 album chart slot. Here he re-works Beaner's track into a peak time, sub-driven sweaty dancefloor bomb. Taradise completes the package with smooth deep house vibes, lush vocals and infectious piano riffs. A diverse and solid release.

I Wanna Know (Seven Davis Jr Midnight remix) (5:09)
I Wanna Know (dBridge remix) (3:22)
I Want You (Animal Collective remix) (3:03)
Review: Back in January, Steve Spacek scored one of this year's most unique long players with the Beat Spacek album Modern Streets which was crafted using only iOS apps. Yes, a very modern concept, but Spacek's mastery of his art ensured this was no gimmick but a fine addition to his storied discography. Before Ninja Tune sign off for the year, the label have issued this 12" featuring a diverse cast of contributing remixers moulding the LP opener "I Wanna Know" in their own vision. Up top, Seven Davis Jr rewires the track into a sublime house groover far removed from the sub heavy drama of the original track. It's a family affair on the flip with Spacek's brother D-Bridge turning in a wonderfully funked out take, whilst Animal Collective's Deakin takes the track down a whole weirder path.

Respect The 78
Let Em Know
3
Review: Until now, FunkinEven's Apron imprint has been used solely as an outlet for the Eglo artist's own productions/edits, chief amongst them the beautifully wrapped Chips & Sweets 12" from last year. Sometimes talent is too good to pass up and FunkinEven's opened the Apron stable to welcome the unheralded production chops of 19 year old Miami based producer Greg Beato. This three track release presents Beato as the latest US producer to join the Stateside ranks of grimy hardware house exponents and it makes complete sense that he's also been lined up for a release on LIES later this year. Lead cut "Respect The 78" sees crunchy kicks rain down on heavily filtered arpeggios and thunderous synths, whilst "Let Em Know" rips right into a powerful locked groove that occasionally feels like it's tripping over itself. Final track "3" heads down the abstract Motor City techno route and feels as vital as anything to have come from the likes of Naples, Huerco S or Delroy Edwards in recent months.

Reality Checkpoint (Neville Dance Tunnel dub)
Reality Checkpoint (Dan dub)
Review: For those who don't know Dan Beaumont is one of the founders of Disco Bloodbath the club night, helping to establish the name via several years of parties in whatever sweaty Dalston basements they could find. Currently involved in everything that's good about Dalston (Superstore, Dance Tunnel, Voodoo Rays and NTS) Beaumont makes his recording debut on Disco Bloodbath the label in requisite fashion with this Reality Checkpoint 12". Advancing on the sound he was focusing on with Ben Rhymer as Jam Factory, Beaumont's approach here is a deep and rhythmic take on the house sound, with the title track demonstrating a dubby underbelly that hints at an appreciation of the Compass Point studios. Creme Organization's Neville Watson offers a playful remix named in honour of the Dance Tunnel whilst Beaumont slips in an additional dub take that is primed for play on their Rhythm Connection radio show.
