On tracks like ‘All Nature’ or ‘Before I Sleep’, he writes as if recalling something just out of reach, never quite imposing form. Review: British musician and synth pioneer Thomas Dolby always leaned closer to code than chords, so this early 90s soundtrack project i made for a CGI film i plays to his strengths. Across nine tracks he switches between ambient electronics, playful digital funk and a 1930s-style pastiche that somehow made it past quality control. Five tracks have vocals with Dolby fronting most of them and sharing space with astrophysicist Dr Fiorella Terenzi on two. 'Armageddon' and 'Big Bang Backwards' toy with cinematic tension via arpeggiators and brooding pads. 'N.E.O.' and 'Planet of Lost Souls' operate in mood-setting mode, light on hooks, heavy on reverb. 'The Ascent of Man' unfolds over six short movements, each varying in form but consistent in palette. By the time 'Moonbase' wraps up with its soft-techno optimism, the tone feels locked in: speculative, slightly smug and unmistakably Dolby. It's not as sharp as The Golden Age of Wireless, or as brooding as The Flat Earth but it still lands somewhere in that familiar zone between curiosity and concept.

Review: French pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet and the English Chamber Orchestra revisit Dario Marianelli's score for Joe Wright's 2005 period drama, reissued here for its twentieth anniversary. The music remains understated and structurally simple, leaning on recurring motifs rather than overt drama. 'Dawn' and 'Liz On Top Of The World' open the set with solo piano, slow and unadorned. 'The Living Sculptures of Pemberley' and 'Georgiana' bring in light chamber textures with little variation in tempo or tone. On side B, 'Another Dance' and 'The Secret Life of Daydreams' add weight through denser ensemble writing. 'Darcy's Letter' and 'Your Hands Are Cold' hint at emotional crescendo without pushing the dynamic range. 'A Postcard to Henry Purcell' nods briefly to baroque form, while 'Mrs Darcy' and the 'End Credits' wrap the suite with quiet symmetry. The pressing comes on transparent mauve vinyl with a booklet of film stills, but the music is left untouched: soft, linear, and deliberately restrained.

Review: Two decades after its theatrical release, American soundtrack king John Williams' score for A.I. Artificial Intelligence finally arrives on vinyl. It's a shocker: perhaps the posthuman subject of this unmistakable Steven Spielberg film bespeaks the studio's reluctance to vinyl-ise its score, as the retro format, at first glance, hardly complements the film's futuristic theme. Though it is a late recombinant cultural move, this reissue reveals something pertinent to the film's message: that neoclassical scores aren't just for humans. As David, a robotic child programmed to love, longs to belong after being cast aside by his human family, Williams' score keeps firm to the traditional orchestral movement, refusing the easy temptation to "electronicise". This 2xLP edition is mastered by James Plotkin and housed in a gatefold sleeve featuring artwork by Sara Wong, with design contributions from Jordan Christianson and Jesse Michael Taylor, making it both a sonic and visual tribute to one of Williams' most daring works.

Review: Japanese composer, musician, producer and sound designer Akira Yamaoka returns to Silent Hill with a revised score for the 2024 remake of the series' most enduring entry. This new selection, released via Laced Records, reframes the original's stark minimalism through a more sculpted, textural palette. Yamaoka draws on the same core elements i trip-hop breaks, distorted guitar, low-end ambience, but shifts the emphasis toward layered production and sustained tension. The industrial motifs now feel more granular. Field recordings and musique concrete techniques surface across tracks, forming unease not through volume but pacing. Rather than a direct update the soundtrack plays like a parallel work. 'Promise (Reprise)' and 'Theme of Laura' retain their structure but show restraint in performance and mix. Newer pieces lean into atmosphere over motif, offering less thematic clarity but deeper immersion. For longtime listeners, the changes may feel understated but the logic behind them is consistent. As with the game, familiarity is refracted rather than repeated. The result is a score that sits in conversation with its predecessor rather than replacing it.

Review: The first recorded meeting of Pierre Bastien (compositeur Parisien) and Casper Van De Velde's (Belgian drummer known for his outings on Qeerecords) documents two days of lowkey live-performed regalia at Werkplaats Walter in Brussels. Set up by Blickwinkel, the residency saw Bastien's "miniature mechanical orchestras" - trumpets, motors, Meccano arms, all of which make up the former artist's trademark live machinic draw - click into orbit with Van De Velde's loose-limbed, textural percussion. Across ten tracks, the pair drift through a liminal zone of memory and reinvention - where tactile textures and diaristic flourishes brush against more abstract emotional spells. Review: By the time they got to their fifth album, Liverpool synth pioneers OMD were deep into their glossy, technicolor phase and this reissue of Junk Culture brings all the sharp edges and weird charms back into focus. It's a record that manages to be sleek and experimental at once, balancing pop hooks with a slightly offbeat sense of rhythm and sound. 'Tesla Girls' is manic in the best way, bursting with punchy synth stabs and that hyperactive vocal delivery. 'Locomotion' smooths things out with a more laid-back groove, still very much dancefloor-ready but built on bounce rather than rush. Then there's 'Talking Loud and Clear,' which leans softer, airy and romantic without slipping into cliche. The deeper cuts keep things interesting with 'Love & Violence' and 'White Trash' which feel darker and more cryptic, like glimpses behind the polished exterior. Even when it flirts with radio-friendliness, the record never really plays it safe. This album links the early electronic experimentalism to the polished and slick synth pop that would take OMD to a household name with the following album. Sometimes an overlooked album in their catalog but always respected for the work within. It's a snapshot of a band pulling synthpop in new directions, not afraid to get playful or strange.

Review: Aryan Ashtiani aka Mareux takes a messier, relatively impulsive route on his second album Nonstop Romance. Out of Los Angeles, the contemporary darksynth producer swaps "sleek" for a wilder, bit-ducted swoon, like a love note smeared underfoot. Where his earlier work flirted with icy control, the likes of 'Wild At Heart' and 'Ebene Fume' flounces to the beeline of obsession, intoxicated and unfiltered. It's romantic to the point of rupture: drum machines stammer, vocals slip between croon and cry, synths blur into feedback. His debut Lovers From The Past felt coldly curated, while Nonstop Romance is its unruly inverse.

Review: After a year of creative stagnation, Ryan Lee West returns with music that pulses with renewed spirit and emotional clarity. Rather than retreat to well-worn methods, he ventured outside his Hackney studio, crafting this album from a collection of salvaged fragments and half-formed sketches. The result is a record that constantly shifts between introspective ambient passages and vibrant electronic bursts, always grounded by West's keen sensitivity to emotion and movement. There's a tactile, almost handmade quality throughout. Tracks like 'Catherine' unfold with disarming simplicity, just a bare melody and shifting drums, yet feel deeply alive. 'Known Shape' straddles the boundary between club and dreamstate, while 'In a Trance' bounces with uncanny charm, pieced together from disjointed rhythms and airy textures. '2 Forms' distorts synths into something raw and turbulent, and 'Nocturne' quietly explores shadowy spaces with ghostlike piano and reverb. West's background as a guitarist subtly informs the record's structure, and he often treats electronic elements with a sense of physicality. Acoustic guitar loops thread through 'In Reverse' and 'Gaivotas', blending digital and organic worlds with ease. Review: Tokyo-born violinist Hiroki Tamaki channels the spiritual teachings of Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh into a quietly visionary LP, originally issued in 1983 and now reissued for the first time. Working with synth maestro Fumitaka Anzai, Tamaki creates a meditative fusion of layered vocals, shimmering electronics and devotional folk minimalism. ‘Kawa’ and ‘Sora’ offer hushed melodic gestures and ambient texture, while ‘Mahamudra No Shi’ leans towards prog-folk with swirling spoken word and swelling strings. ‘Beautiful Song’, featured on Nippon Acid Folk 1970–1980, retains its status as a cult classic—its mix of cosmic harmony and gentle psychedelia setting the tone for ‘Ai’ and the synth-rich ‘Meditation’. Closing piece ‘Umi’ floats through misty resonance, sealing a record that feels like a private mantra, ritualistic yet human.
