It's a sprawling affair, clocking in at over two hours and featuring a diverse cast of vocalists. The tracklist reads like a who's who of leftfield pop, - - Alison Goldfrapp, Robyn, Susanne Sundfor and Fever Ray among them - each voice adding a different shade to Royksopp's already nuanced sound. Review: Soothing kosmische tones by British electronica band The Beloved, with a reissued indie-facing compilation of early singles. First released in 1993, this record came to consciousness at the same time as it hit the UK albums chart; and we're not surprised it did, for its angelic mixing, creaseless sound, and sophisticated easy listening progressions. Out of the 90s vogue for desirous house, trip-hop and downtempo a-la Everything But The Girl and Lamb came The Beloved with the smash 'Sweet Harmony', but the sweet, vivid breaths and basses of the sinuous 'Lose Yourself In Me' and paradisiacal lounge phonics of 'You've Got Me Thinking' also stand out.

Review: The enginmatic Orchestra Veneta follows on from last year's debut single with a duo of Balearic-laced edits, each of which is sure to be as powerfully popular as the Iglesias-themed first chapter. Rumoured to be the work of evergreen maverick DJ Harvey, the Orchestra Veneta sound is aimed squarely at discerning dancefloors, with each track breathing new life into esoteric cuts with the help of some respectful overdubs and production polish. 'Track One' reimagines the Gipsy Kings' 'Furia', adding evocative synths and a little low-end bump to the existing Latin guitars and feverish handclaps. Locomia's 'Taiyo Sol' gets the rework treatment on the flip, building into a fervour with idiosyncratic vocal chants powering over sturdy drums, exotic synths and gentle acid licks. Considering the pedigree of the alleged protagonist here, and the fact that part one changes hands for silly money on Discogs, sleeping on this would be ill-advised to say the least.

Review: Originally released in 2002, this album remains one of Washington-based duo's most well-known albums, blending trip-hop, downtempo, and an eclectic mix of global influences. While it's often categorised as sophisticated lounge music, its world-fusion approach offers a real depth, from hypnotic opener 'Heaven's Gonna Burn Your Eyes', featuring Emiliana Torrini's airy vocals over a light, looping keyboard melody and deep bassline, onwards. The track's ethereal quality sets a contemplative tone and back s it up with dynamic shifts that make it equally as engaging. 'Facing East' brings in Middle Eastern violin phrases and tribal drums, adding a richer texture. Here, Thievery Corporation excels, weaving together global sounds into a flowing, immersive piece. Tracks like 'The Outernationalist' and 'Un Simple Histoire' fall into the duo's familiar patternipleasant but formulaic dub and bossa nova elements that, while polished, don't push boundaries. However, 'Meu Destino' and 'Exilo' set themselves apart thanks to the authentic performances from Patrick de Santo and Vernie Verla, allowing the music to breathe without overproduction. Helping to validate Thievery Corporation's signature sound, this is a beautifully produced work and somewhat of a landmark in the history of downtempo lounge-hop.

Re-rendering their chosen songs in bobbing dub, Nirvana's grunge roll 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' is first revitalised, transformed into a sustainable form: "jello, hello, how low" becomes a relatively spooky perennation of Hammond, while Krist Novoselic's accompanying basslines become chop guitar, emblematic of the rocksteady movement. Review: Sensory Blending hears Finnish artist Jimi Tenor and Italian group Aura Safari team up for an impromptu studio shebang in Perugia, Italy, after Tenor's storied but clandestine performance at a Hell Yeah party. Despite no prior connection, the musicians quickly found common ground, forging a vivant fusion of jazz-funk, tropicalia and soul. Tenor's psychedelic style gelled Aura Safari's faster, intuited approach, resulting in such tracks as 'Bodily Synesthesia,' 'Bewitched By The Sea' and 'Lunar Wind', each of which connect seductive grooves and ghost noted keys. Possibly performed live at select events later in the year, the record is a perfect storm of recorded "live feel" Balearica.

Review: Contemporary French touch legend DJ Cam occupies an impressive emulsion of styles on his latest picture disc LP for Diggers Factory, fusing soul, dub, trap, future garage, dancehall, easy listening, chopped n' screwed, and even "eccojams", in a refreshingly nonessential tour of just about every offshoot genre one could possibly think of having emerged from soundsystem culture, however tenuous each link. As Cam puts it, this record is "like my Blue Lines by Massive Attack' and the concomitant attention to detail is obvious. Coolest of the bunch are the sullenly dubious dancehaller 'Feels Like Love' and the 808-packed anode 'Without You', while the record is almost equally charmed by the sampled, presumably French lounge interludes heard throughout.

Review: French house DJ and record producer Stephane Pompougnac adds another tranche of slick, DJ-able downtempo to the Hotel Costes series, which has carried on strong on Wagram Music since 1999. The lounge compilation series is named after the Paris hotel in which Pompougnac first cut his teeth, and this sixth edition was released way back in 2017, albeit with a different front cover (though swapping the exact image out, Pompougnac has kept consistent in his penchant for featuring nubile young feminine visages on his front covers). 'The Brazilian Hipster' and 'Work That Body' kick off this edits comp with a fiery steeze-before-sleaze, emphasising slung downtempos and unbuckled grooves.

Review: Two years on from the release of his Ubiquity label debut, the hard-to-pigeonhole Balearic/global musical fusion set that was Da Cuckoo YaYa, self-taught producer and multi-instrumentalist Reuben Vaun Smith returns with a fresh full-length. Once again, the warming, colourful and effortlessly atmospheric set is both gorgeous and hard to pigeonhole, with the Yorkshire based artist variously doffing a cap to dream pop, yacht rock, blue-eyed soul, shuffling downtempo soundscapes, soft-focus AOR synth-pop and sun-bright Balearic beats. It's the kind of set that not only impresses on first listen but also grows on you with each successive listen. Review: Helping define the sound of luxury lounge music in the late 90s and 2000s, Stephane Pompougnac's Hotel Costes series merged downtempo, house, and chillout music with blase sophistication. Synonymysing his sound with the Paris venue's opulent yet intimate atmosphere, the Place Vendome adjacent venue proved a hit for its chic bar-lounge a and stylish international crowd, offering an indulgent escape into dimly lit, decorous elegance. Arresting and pinning the historic tail on the works of such artists as Thievery Corporation and Gatan Project, the series, started in 1999, was instrumental for the apres-coup recognition of a sound. Review: Renato Cohen has been kicking out jams of all shapes and sizes for many years, but this new outing on French house classicists Skylax amounts to some of his best work in ages. 'Roaring' is a disco-tech cut with dazzling arps loping in sugar, pixelated circles over the striking beats. 'We Desert' then gets more loose with synths spraying about with a mind of their own and plenty of cosmic colour. On the flip, the open gets reworked twice, first into a more heads down and bendy acid workout for the afters and also as a hands-in-the-air piano Balearic classic.

Review: El Buho's (Robin Perkins') influential 2017 debut album returns with its first repress, aiding our reflections on an album that helped define the digital folklorica and "natural cumbia" movements emergent in electronic music in the latter half of the 2010s. Balance weaves a complex darn of naturalism, Latin American rhythms, and modern synthetic percussion design, smudging the lines cordoning off organics and synthesis. Hailed in the press as "the ultimate fusion of nature and music" and for evidencing Mexico's indigenous roots in sound, El Buho helped bridge organic and digital worlds of cumbia Andina and chicha with electronic textures here, presaging and perhaps causing the clamour over cumbia that has since ensued.
