Review: Since so many European labels have been reissuing lost and obscure 1980s Japanese ambient albums of late, it was probably inevitable that at least one label would put together a compilation paying tribute to the sound. It turns out that Jazzy Couscous has won the race with Kumo No Moko, a superb double album that does a terrific job in putting Japan's '80s ambient scene in context. As you'd expect, the majority of the tracks feature either dreamy electronic sounds or a mixture of acoustic and electronic instrumentation, with nods to jazz coming thick and fast. There are naturally a couple of fairly well-known names on show, but for the most part the compilers have done a terrific job in highlight lesser-known tracks from unsung heroes.

Review: We love Talking Drums. At the core, they are simply our type of band. An album, a few EPs, and then disappear before the scene kicks off and becomes commercialized. Boxes all well and truly ticked. The early 80s were a period of change what with punk music evolving into post-punk, and while the nu-romantic fashion that came to prominence in the mid 80s was a national movement, it was bands like Talking Drums which initiated it. Thanks to the ever-reliable Dark Entries, we now get to enjoy their best single, Courage, in all its glory - and it sounds like it's been pressed up properly, too! All you need to know at this point, if you haven't come across this already, is that it's one of the best disco-not-disco singles you'll ever cop...and we don't have a favourite tune...they're all equally raw, drum-heavy, house-envisioning, and utterly addictive. Hotly tipped!

Review: Although composed by Japanese ambient and new age composer Takashi Kokubo in the mid 1980s, "A Dream Sails Out To Sea (Get Out The Wave)" was never officially released. Instead, it was given away as a gift to those who purchased a particular model of air conditioning unit manufactured by Sanyo. Happily, Japanese music specialists Lag Records has decided to finally give it a proper release. The music is stunningly beautiful, comparable in quality to leading Japanese ambient albums of the period from the likes of Yoshio Suzuki, Dip in the Pool and Keizo Inoue. Expect waves of blissful synthesized panpipe melodies, twinkling electronics, becalmed harps, imaginative use of traditional Japanese instrumentation and a B-side epic that will take your breath away.

Review: Last year, Astral Industries dived into the back catalogue of obscure ambient explorer Heavenly Music Corporation (AKA film and TV composer Kim Cascone) to present the first vinyl release of superb 1995 album "Lunar Phase". Here, they offer the same treatment to 1993's "In A Garden of Eden", Cascone's first solo release. It, too, is something of an overlooked classic, albeit one whose inspirations were more pastoral and natural than the stargazing Lunar Phase. The set is notable not only for its Pete Namlook-esque use of dreamy, elongated chords, but also for the presence of hyponotic, Global Communication style melodic movements and Cascone's liberal use of sound effects and field recordings, which bring to mind the KLF's legendary ambient house album, "Chill Out".

Review: Originally released in 2011, the Floral Shoppe LP by Ramona Andra Xavier aka Macintosh Plus has been considered by some to be the defining album of the vaporwave genre. Based in Portland, Oregon she has has actively released her music online since the age of 14 and produced over 40 full length albums, spanning dozens of aliases since 2005. This reissue by Todd Ledford's Olde English Spelling Bee features all 11 of the original tracks: collection of lo-fi '80's pop mutations that fans of the genre still consider as seminal - not to mention being highly sought after.

Review: New York City based enfant terrible Nicolas Jaar composed an alternate soundtrack to Sergei Parajanov's 1969 avant-garde Soviet film The Colour Of Pomegranates back in 2015 for free download, but it is now available as a deluxe vinyl edition via the London based Mana imprint. It is longer and slower than his other albums, featuring a poetic narrative with strange and beautiful sonic qualities. The Pomegranates LP is a captivating collection of songs incorporating elements of classical music, avant-garde and field recordings and is free of genre boundaries.

Review: LA Club Resource's Innsyter helps carry Contort Yourself into this new realm of dedicated solo releases from contemporary artists (their previous form was to split releases between archival and new tracks). The snarling, industrial palette is much the same, and the years of origin are as ambiguous here as they've ever been on the label, making Innsyter the perfect addition to the catalogue. From acid-dipped synth pop to nightmarish wave contortions, this record is certainly not for the faint of heart, but if you already love the dark and deadly world of Contort Yourself then this brilliantly-realised, consistently inventive record can't fail to hit the spot.

Review: More moody and mysterious noir-house from Oliver Hafenbauer's always fascinating imprint Die Orakel. On this occasion, they've commissioned two tremendous remixes of underrated German legend Rolf Trostel by modern virtuoso Edward. Trostel was a synthesist inspired by Tangerine Dream, who was active in the early 1980s. On the A side, we have the entrancing bliss of "New Age Of Intelligence" awash in layers of hypnotic sequences and shimmering textures, while on the flip "Der Prophet" sees Edward rework this overlooked classic into another mone of his gorgeously majestic creations for the dancefloor.

Now the continually interesting Athens-based label Modal Analysis is releasing its first album in the shape of a live recording of Nikos Veliotis and ILIOS performing their minimalist drone experiments live in St. Paul's Anglican Church in the Greek capital. It's a subtle sound for patient ears, but listen deeply and you'll find such a rich amount of detail and expression wrought out of the duo's combination of organic instrumentation and electronics.

Featuring a wide range of DIY and experimental artists such as Van Kaye, The Hi-Tones with their rather Dead Can Dance sounding "Ibrahim", Another and their lo-slung no-wave antics on "Paris Tribe" and Strung with their EBM thriller "Warschau Pact". It provides a glimpse into the artistic DIY music movement that was growing extensively outside of mainstream circles of the time. For this sequel, they dug deep into the Dutch lowlands and discovered yet more amazing musicians and their independent music that sounds just as exciting today.

With an extensive resume that includes keyboard duties for Kill Rock Stars' 00s noise rock band The Paper Chase as well as his concurrent projects, dark post-punk-synth-rockers Nervous Curtains and darkwave duo Little Beards, Mirror Box is Kirkpatrick's first foray into the purely electronic realm. Blending together elements of Giallo moodiness, dub texture, techno propulsion, a passing nod to your favorite wave music, and a flare for the kosmiche, Mirror Box' debut release, Minimal Compliance EP, is a tour de force of the veteran musician's exploration of a wide range of influences and experience.

Review: We are honored to release 'A Boy Alone', a double LP set from Manchester electronic music pioneer Eric Random. Best known for his early recordings for New Hormones and Les Disques du Crepuscule and collaborations with Pete Shelley (Buzzcocks), Cabaret Voltaire and Nico. As an original member of The Tiller Boys with Shelley, Random injected a healthy dose of Krautrock into the dour Manchester post-punk scene in 1978/79 before going solo the following year. Random's first 7" "Subliminal"/"23 Skidoo" was released in 1981 via Les Disques du Crepuscule and explored ominous sonic surrounds. That same year also saw the release of a second 7" single on New Hormones, "Dow Chemical Company"/ "Skin Deep". Both tracks offered bubbling, rhythmic sound patterns, and were the first to feature other musicians that would become know as The Bedlamites. Consisting of Lynn Walton on vocals, Ian Runacres and Andy Diagram of Dislocation Dance, and bassist Wayne Worm, aka Wayne Sedgeman. Their debut 12" single "Subliminal Seduction"/"Bedlam-a-Go-Go" was released in 1982 through Plurex, mixing arid funk textures and sparse melodies. That same year the group contributed proto chill-out track "6.55" to Plurex compilation 'Hours' and the highly filmic track "In Cassette Conference" to the Touch cassette package 'Feature Mist'. In 1983, Random spent several months in the Himalayas with a group of musicians from the Kulu Valley and studied non-Western instruments such as tabla. On returning to Manchester, Random convened a new group of Belamites including Walton, Sedgeman and drummer Graham Dowdall aka Dids of Ludus. They released the 12" single "Mad As Mankind"/"Dream Web Of Maya" in 1984 on Cabaret Voltaire's Doublevision, embracing electronic, industrial and dub styles. In 1985 they contributed the soothing "Pure Power" to Food Records' "Imminent Episode One" compilation. Our reissue also includes 4 unreleased bonus tracks from Eric's archives recorded between 1981-1984. The whole set adds up to 115 minutes of sinister, somnambulant Random music. All songs have been remastered by George Horn at Fantasy Studios. Each copy is housed in a gatefold jacket designed by Eloise Leigh featuring a spread of ephemera, photos with liner notes by James Nice of LTM.

Review: Pauline Oliveros might be the very reason why you're still listening to electronics on cassette in 2018. The American singer, composer and author began to experiment way back in the 1960s and, until her death in 2016, she had not stopped doing so. Belgium's Sub Rosa have decided to put together a little collection of her most daring work between the years 1959-1966 a period when the artist was clearly on an exploratory tip. It's incredible to hear how little others have done to take this even further; Oliveros' style was already futureproof back then, and we hear little else that goes much further than this in terms of freedom and vision. If you're fans of 'ambient' or 'drone' then look no further than this.

Review: During the recording of One Hundred Billion Sparks, his first album for two years, Max Cooper did a lot of thinking. Developed concurrently with a new live show, he says every track on the 12-track set was written "as a score to a virtual story stemming from this system of one-hundred billion sparking neurons which create us". The resultant music is naturally widescreen and epic in tone, with early electronic "movements" - think neo-classical minded ambient soundscapes - slowly making way for more immersive, beat-driven dancefloor fare as the album progresses. It's an approach that pays dividends time and again, whether on the delicately spacey and cinematic beauty of standout ambient cut "Reciprocity", or the more rhythmic pulse of "Emptyset" and the shuffling IDM bliss of "Platonic".

Review: On his last album, 2016's "Love Streams", long-serving ambient experimentalist Tim Hecker joined forces with an Icelandic choir and orchestra. This time round, he has headed East, utilizing the services of Japanese musicians and percussionists. The resultant set, "Konoyo", tips a wink to Japan's deep history in both ambient and jazz, but is far darker and dystopian in tone. It's an intriguing approach, all told, and one that allows for tracks to organically evolve, slowly shifting between fluid, otherworldly dreaminess and unsettling, paranoid creepiness. It's this interplay - not just between darkness and light, but also the experimental and the traditional - that makes "Konoyo" such a riveting and enjoyable listen.

Review: Niagara has always been an intriguing proposition. The trio's music is often brilliant, but frequently thrillingly difficult to pigeonhole. They're at it again on "Apologia", a debut album that's as trippy and otherworldly as it is beautiful, inventive and intoxicating. Over the course of the set's nine tracks, you can expect to hear oddball samples, bright tropical melodies, "Blade Runner"-influenced synthesizer work, sticky Portuguese rhythms, ambient electronics, glitchy electronics, lo-fi drum machine hits, rainforest-ready songs, bustling hand percussion and horizontal aural humidity. In other words, it's a brilliant musical melting pot the likes of which you've never heard before.

He's a crucial member of the Tokyo's Chopstick Killahz: a self-described 'post tribal DJ unit' lurking on the fringes of the city's grime scene, in addition to being a Noods Radio resident. He presents some more of his contorted UK bass and gqom derivatives from the far east on the End Of The Death EP. Influences of Jersey club, dancehall and grime are evident throughout, from the reverberated rapid-fire toms of "Run To Mall" or the industrial edged beats of "Random Coherence" or "Throbbing Pain" to even more desolate soundscapes as heard on the chilling "Visitor From The Ocean".

Review: On most occasions, the Scottish artist Robert Rental (1952-2000) worked with hometown friend Thomas Leer (Act/Pressure) or Mute Records' Daniel Miller in studios, but these rough sketches were recorded at a council flat in Battersea circa 1980 - laying unheard for years amongst his family's treasured possessions. Featured on Different Voices For You Different Colours For Me are rare perspectives of the British post punk icon's solo work. Optimo's JD Twitch states that 'in this current era where so much music is so completely focused on the production.. it's a pleasant shock to discover that a forgotten tape from nearly 40 years ago can be the freshest and most refreshing sounding thing ever.'

Review: Like many experimental composers, Sarah Davachi is impressively prolific. This Ba Da Bing! debut marks the Los Angeles-based Canadian's third full-length outing of 2018, though there's little sign of her high quality threshold dipping. This is studious, hallucinatory ambience of the highest order, with Davachi conjuring up cuts that ebb, flow and studiously unfurl themselves across the sound space, making "Gave In Rest" perfect for contemplative headphone listening. At times, tracks are little more than beguiling exercises in electronic sound design, at others they're far more musically complex, drawing on her love of choral music, woodwind ensembles and dusty old church organs. Throughout, the music sounds breathtakingly beautiful.
