Review: It's rare that an electronic album is the biggest album of the year, or at least the most hyped. That's certainly the case with Syro, Richard D James first official release under his Aphex Twin moniker for some 13 years. So, is it in any good? For starters, it sounds like an Aphex Twin album. Listen through to the 12 tracks, and many of his familiar staples are present - the "Digeridoo" era rave breakbeats, the mangled synth-funk mash-ups, the intoxicating ambient-era melodies, the warped basslines and the skittish drill & bass style rhythms. There's madness, beauty and intensity in spades. In other words, it's an Aphex Twin album, and - as so many have pointed out since the album's release was announced - there's no-one else quite like Richard D James.

Review: The combination of Richard H. Kirk and Minimal Wave was never going to disappoint, but the four tracks on this Never Lose Your Shadow 12" are still very special! Digging deep through the archives of the Cabaret Voltaire front man, Veronica Vasicka presents a quartet of solo recordings that have never been committed to wax before. The highlight is undoubtedly the A Side title track, a lolloping ten minute track of hypnotic industrial action made all the more memorable by Kirk's acerbic intonations about "the blind leading the blind". If you've caught a Vasicka DJ set recently you will have probably lost yourself to these ten minutes. On the flip are three tracks recorded in the same late '70s period which are distinctly more experimental in tone and just as vital.

Review: Tamed Monsters EP is an inaugural release of the new record label Pandora. New imprint will focus on ambient sounds, music for home-listening and unique artwork. The VA includes works from german producer Benedikt Frey, russian producers Shine Grooves, Unbroken Dub, and an ambient group Kurvenschreiber. Each artist offers a different sound, which lets the music evolve like a story and makes a nice combination of dreamy ambience and mesmerizing repetitive beats.

Review: The latest release from Into The Light demonstrates once again few can match Tako Reyenga of Redlight Records fame and his Echovolt counterpart Ilias Pitsios when it comes showcasing the sublime musical pioneers of '70s and '80s Greece. Much like last year's Vangelis Katsoulis retrospective, the focus of the latest Into The Light release falls on another artist to feature on their classic debut compilation in the shape of George Theodorakis. Son of Mikis, the legendary composer responsible for scoring Zorba The Greek and Serpico, Theodorakis issued only a limited amount of music over a 20 year period, but was known for his intense studio habits which resulted in a vast archive of unreleased material. Much of that features on The Rules of the Game: Original Studio Recordings (1978-1995), with the 16 tracks rolling deeper into the new age synthesizer vibe of the two Theodorakis compositions that featured on the label's debut compilation.

Review: After winning hearts from critics and listeners alike with his two 2012 albums, Lee Gamble delivers a hotly anticipated follow-up for his spiritual home, Pan. The tone of Koch is similarly concerned with plush ambient tones and murky atmospherics, while the beats meander from techno thrust (as on "Motor System") via fractious weirdo house shuffle (see "Nueme") through to intricate broken beat minimalism (courtesy of "Voxel City Spirals"). These differences are bound together by the immersive tones that linger consistently over the album, giving rise to a release that should satisfy anyone craving more of the goodness that populated Diversion 1994-1996.

Sour (Vanzetti & Sacco remix)
20-20
Review: Initially a duo responsible for a sole 7" release on Blind Prophet, Void Vision re-emerges here as the sole project of Shari Vari on this sublime 12" for the excellent Mannequin Records. The three track Sour precedes a debut Void Vision LP for the Berlin-based operation which is apparently due later this year and we cannot wait based on the sounds explored here. Lead track "Sour" is a ripe and muscular Italo track which is profoundly danceable and wholly erotic, whilst the accompanying remix from Bordello A Parigi pair Vanzetti & Sacco does a splendid job in magnifying more dancier elements of Void Vision's production. The full throttle instrumental thrust of closing track "20/20" will please fans of Void Vision's earlier work though we are more focused on what she's going to do next!

Luder Pre
Review: The wonderful Er + Er imprint has a knack for getting some of the biggest names in electronic music together and jamming the hell out! Some of the works by Ricardo Villalobos for the label have been simply sublime. This time, we got legend Carl Craig going head-to-head with the supremely talented Francesco Tristano in a sort of classical techno vibe. "Luder Pre" combines a mid-tempo percussive beat with some seriously twisted piano work, twisting and contorting into a right old spin. It's a one-sided gem, it's 300 copies limited, so you better get yourself one quick!

Review: After Order Of Noise presented Vessel as a fearsome force within and without the Young Echo collective, Seb Gainsborough brings his foremost alias back for another bout of long-playing exploration, and this time he's crafted a wholly different sound from homemade instruments. The drums rattle and thud with a tacit live-ness, while the synths wail, groan and strain their way through grand and opulent sound scapes to chill the spine and un-nerve the soul. It's a masterfully well-sculpted record with moments of light bleeding into bottomless pits of murk, and it further establishes Vessel as a powerful force in forward-thrusting electronic music.

Missing Us
Missing Us (dub)
Review: Marking the start of an exciting new collaborative project, Wolf + Lamb proudly share the debut release of The Waves & Us. Formed out of
a creative meeting of minds between Maayan Nidam, Markus Nikolaus and Louis McGuire, theirs is a sound that strengthens the storied
approach of a live band with the experimental thrust of analogue electronics. Pop and rock fundamentals lend an earthly hook to the
tracks, but these are anything but straight-forward songs.
Maayan has already forged a formidable career in electronic music, both under her own name and as part of Mara Trax, scoring releases
on such celebrated labels as Perlon. Markus performs his own solo project Cunt Cunt Chanel, while Louis is part of Ballet School, a band
releasing on noted indie label Bella Union. The whirlwind of creativity that has whipped up around the trio has yielded an album which will
follow this single, made up of one-take recordings that capture the energy and adventure that powers The Waves & Us.
Maayan's electronics provide the atmospheric backdrop to the songs, running modular synthesisers and drum machines through detailed
chains of processing and effects with an emphasis on a warm, charmingly rough finish. Markus' guitar undergoes a similar fuzzy treatment
while his voice calls out introspective, abstract lyrics to set the mind racing. Louis' bass underpins the music with a dubby sensibility,
bringing a necessary balance to the frequency range.
Making the most of their in-the-room recording approach, the singles will feature alternative takes of the songs that will appear on the
album, providing a little insight into the flutters and fluctuations that shape the development of this project. With their eyes fixed on live
performances and an arresting sound already formed, this is a vital time for all three artists and the people that listen to them.

Pretty Daddy
Review: After several years of pushing the boundaries of experimentation within music, Matthew Herbert pulled a curveball few were expecting when he elected to return to his house music roots and continue the series of Parts 12" releases issued under his surname as far back as the mid '90s. Part 6 was a sublime way to mark this return (especially "My DJ") and Herbert looks to be inspired as this Part 7 12" feels every bit as good. Lead track "Bumps" sees Herbert working with Rahel Debebe, vocalist for Accident act Hejira, and the results have a similar charm to some of Michachu's early material though a bit more polished, a bit less ramshackle. "Sucker" is a killer DJ tool that will confuse people in the best way possible, whilst "Get Strong" is a typically idiosyncratic Herbert production with very few elements utilised expertly. Closing track "Pretty Daddy" sounds like old Roots Manuva track "Son Of The Soil" remixed by Jamal Moss (this is a good thing).

Review: Weaving finds Seattle label Further coaxing a wonderful album of meditative synth and ambient music out of Jo Johnson, who is perhaps best known for her role as a DJ in the London-based Bleep43 collective. Dig a bit deeper and Johnson's musical heritage stretches back to the 90s London indie scene as part of various bands, whilst more recently she's been engaged as part of VLF with fellow Bleep43 member Emile Facey (aka Plant43). This album feels far removed from the electro one might expect from Johnson however. Opening with a homage to Johnson's primary influence Alice Coltrane in "Ancestral Footsteps", Weaving unfolds as one of those albums that welcomes you in from the off and it's all too easy to get lost amidst the luxuriant flourishes and moods that follow.

Review: After a storied recording career that has so far taken in albums for Further, Mathematics and Danyy Wolfers Strange Life label, Spanish artist Vagon Brei added label boss to his CV earlier this year with launch of Mystic & Quantum. Record labels come and go but few arrive driven a real specific concept in a way that Mystic & Quantum are with each album length release conceived to show stories of "adventures, magic, science". Having launched in auspicious fashion with albums from DMX KREW and San Laurentino, Vagon Brei helms the third release with a nine track set entitled The Secret Of Swamp Castle. Seemingly taking influence from Giallo Horror, Brei's album comes across as a compelling collection of synth explorations that will have you returning again and again in order to uncover the Swamp Castle's secrets.

Review: Moving on from the rowdy electro indie-house grooves that made the famous at the end of the noughties, Simian Mobile Disco have become fine purveyors of experimental dance music. In that sense, Whorl is perhaps their most complete work yet. While previous albums were comprised of single hits, this latest LP works as a unit from start to finish, touching on hints of techno and delivering faint hints of krauty guitar riffs. The opener "Redshift" is sparse and aqueous, and the following tracks move with a sense of purpose, ending up on glitchy drum machine workouts and even Detroit-schooled techno tunes made up of nutty modular sequences. It's certainly a welcomed addition to their stellar catalogue and an important change in the band's aesthetic.

Review: Emotional Response welcome Detroit's Fuxa to the label with a mini-album that takes their trademark pyschedelic guitar and synth instrumental rock and showcases the more spiritual and ethereal creativity running within. Specially curated from Fuxa's two recent digital only albums - "Dirty D" and "Frequencies for Physical, Mental and Spiritual Healing" - this special 8 track selection sees each album represented on one side of vinyl. Highlighting band leader Randall Neimann's talent, a mastery of the studio that creates a wall of (mellow) sound that envelops and encases in equal measure. While very much Randall's band, the colloborative nature of the project sees numurous artists appear, with members from Mazzy Star, Add N To (X), Dean & Britta, Spiritualized and founding member Ryan Anderson all providing willing support to seek his primal sound. Noteworthy too is his first appearance as lead vocalist. It is the uplifting to hear his voice on the celebratory Shout Out Loud, the paean of Dream (Don't Give Up) and finally the blissedout-surf-psychedelia of Amen. Dirty Frequencies is a welcome departure for the label, a pyschedelic turn in the mold of the Nick Nicely (ERS005) release, but all the better for it because these sounds and ideas deserve to be heard. An inner trip yes, but really a celebration of the deeper part of the soul - a way to connect.

Coney Storm Drain (extended version)
Review: Ahead of the drop of his debut album, Houndstooth are sneaking out this little 7" shaped taster to give expectant Call Super fans an idea of what they're in for come the big release date. "Sulu Sekou" is a finely woven electronica tale enriched with haunting instrumentation that piles romance and mystery into the endearing pops and fidgets of the homespun rhythm. It's a decidedly mellow excursion compared to the previous Call Super singles, lifting the lid on the exciting new avenues down which the artist is headed. "Coney Storm Drain" appears here in an extended version that finds a base layer of micro-static and winsome melody interfered with by scattered rasps of percussion, building in intensity without ever feeling too anchored to any one direction, like any good exercise in experimentalism.

Review: Alphacut...just a drum and bass label? Think again. The German operation has, yes, been a lynchpin within German drum and bass for more than a decade, but it's their Alpha Cutauri series that's entering the outer limits of experimental sounds, that in a hazy, minute kind of way are vaguely linked to the world of drum and bass. But don't mention this to the artists who have appeared on the series, people like Felix K, Elemental, Sub, and now Paranoid Society. Moreover, trying to explain how this music sounds is almost a waste of time, so best grasp it yourself while it's still there.

Review: It's hard to keep accurate tabs on Dark Entries this year, such is the rate at which the West Coast label is reissuing material and the range of music covered. This latest archival endeavour finds Josh Cheon's label once again tapping from the sizeable well marked Tom Ellard/Severed Heads, having previously reissued the Australian band's classic Dead Eyes Opened. This an altogether rarer proposition however, with 80s Cheesecake a rather special reissue of solo material Ellard committed to tape in the early '80s, specifically the self release 80s Cheesecake and Snappy Carrion. Some of the material has been collected for reissue before, most notably on Vinyl-On-Demand's exhaustive Adenoids 1977-1985 boxset, but this Dark Entries edition presents a more affordable insight into some music that still sounds way ahead of it's time some 30 years on.

Review: Aside from the visual spectacle that is Game Of Thrones, its mythical musical is what really shapes the atmosphere surrounding the series. Composed by Ramin Djawadi, the score to Season 4 is diverse and enchanting, made up of many different acoustic styles and genres. The second track, "The Rains Of Castamere", is even composed by Sigur Ros who give a seriously powerful performance as per usual. There's over twenty tracks spanning two tasty vinyl plates, filled to the brim with seductive strings, new age melodies and militant battle drums for that euphoric blockbuster hit! Stick it on and immerse yourself in a parallel world of mystical wars and fairytales.

Review: Not much is known about Ueno Masaaki other than he's a Japanese artist that's debuting on Raster-Noton with a burgeoning new sound. It's a cutting edge sound that fits in perfectly with demeanour of Raster-Noton and all tracks on Vortices sound like dry, micro-loop reductions of Aoki Takamasa's music. Masaaki's inclusion to the label's Unun series follows previous releases by Mika Vainio and Emptyset - and if that's who label founder Byetone wishes to associate the Japanese artist with than we can expect great things in the future.

Review: Postal Service member Jimmy Tamborello has always had a knack for manipulating sound. Sometimes, this has meant subverting accepted genres - lo-fi rock, for example, or IDM. At others, his approach is much more melodious, mixing skewed sounds and popping electronic rhythms with elements of pop. Human Voice, his first album in two years, continues in the latter vein. By and large, it's a thoroughly positive affair, with cheery electronic melodies and cut-up, pitched down vocal samples riding cheeky rhythms and slack-tuned drums. As a result, Human Voice is hard to pin down, being neither straight up ambient or IDM. Regardless, it's a wonderfully evocative and entertaining set.
