Review: Was anyone ready for one of the most talked-about albums of the year to be Andre 3000 going ham on the flute? Probably not, but in a post-reality world New Blue Sun just slots right in. Of course the legions of Outkast fans are going to be split when an artist of such prominence takes a wild swerve into experimental musical pastures, but for those with an open mind or a pre-existing appreciation of ambient and leftfield music, this album is an easy sell. Teasing the tension between acoustic and electronic, ancient and hypermodern, grounded and ethereal, Andre has been bold and honest in presenting this album to the world and his gamble has paid off.

Review: While it's a cliche to describe Balearic-minded releases as being "sun-soaked" and "sunset-ready", they're both descriptors that accurately reflect the gorgeously warm, melodious and laidback sound of Japanese outfit Coastlines. Their second self-titled album is every bit as inspired as its predecessor and offers a range of tracks built around layered, intricate instrumentation, gently shuffling rhythms and vivid daydreams about beachside walks in sunnier climes. Review: Vick Lavander is a name that has always been a byword for deep house quality. His sound is couched in a classic template but comes with subtle tweaks and plenty of its own musical character. BEYOND is a bumper collection of beats which proves just that. There are silky and cosmically minded sounds like 'Time & Time Again' next to subtly jazzy dancers like 'Sunset BLVD' and dubby, elegant grooves like the life-affirming 'Grace'. The pace picks up with joints like 'Knights' but never at the expense of atmosphere and slows right down with swab-tinged downbeat delights like 'Good Timing'. A magnificently rich work.

Review: Amazingly, it's 25 years since George 'E.A.S.E' Evelyn and then production partner Kevin 'Boy Wonder' Harper sat down and recorded "Dextrous", their monstrous, bleep-era classic on Warp. A quarter of a century later, Evelyn is still going strong, though the grooves have mellowed a lot in that time. Here, Warp celebrate the producer's epic career with a much-deserved retrospective. All the familiar favourites are present, from the rush-inducing thrill of early dancefloor smashers "I'm For Real" and "Aftermath", to the sinewy downtempo goodness of the decidedly Balearic "Les Nuits", the blazed hip-hop dub of "195 Llbs" and stoner soul of "70s 80s".

Review: Embarking on a reissues campaign of lo-fi hip-hop pioneer Nujabes' earliest material, Hydeout Productions share a new edition of the storied producer's second record, Modal Soul. In contrast to his debut Metaphorical Music, Modal Soul is the full-length that really took the world by quiet storm. Laid down after both the solo debut and the release of two Samurai Champloo soundtracks, Modal Soul marked a return to source, and is another testament to what Nujabes did best. Most hip-hop fans will preconsciously, instantly recognise the central, flourishing piano movement of the opener 'Feather', which sticks to the four-bar formula whilst inviting fellow rappers Cise Starr and Akin to wax freely, the central theme being lightness of being: "drifting away like a feather in air / Letting my words take me away from the hurt and despair". The maudlin mood is kept throughout, with cumulative standouts such as 'Reflection Eternal' having also inscribed themselves in collective memory, and more swung experiments like 'Sea Of Cloud' showcasing Nujabes' slowly but surely disclosing a skilful abstraction of breakbeat roots.

Review: Hard to define, rule breaking and game-changing producer Theo Parrish is back with another of his challenging and superlative albums. This one - which naturally arrives on his own Sound Signature label - is a collaboration with Maurissa Rose that true sooth the soul. It s full of his usual deadly grooves, shamanistic percussive layers and jazz energies with plenty of his famous luscious, meditative loops. Add in the smooth vocals of Rose - which come in the form of a soulful stream of consciousness - and you have yet another unique album from this true maverick of the form.

Review: Saib.'s debut album, Around The World, stunned listeners who got to hear this album on the first release back in 2019. Now reissued, the various global sounds, reflecting the cultural melting pot of Casablanca is once again, the talk of reissues. With intricate guitar work and hip-hop beats as its backbone, the album seamlessly transitions between jazz, lounge, Asian textures, and more. Each track is a unique exploration of saib.'s influences, showcasing his versatility and musical talent. From the upbeat funk of 'Casablanca Funk' to the serene beauty of 'Lullaby,' and the exotic allure of 'Shanghai Nights,' every moment is riveting. Remastered for enhanced quality, Around The World is a memorable trip into the sounds of a foreign country and its culture.

Review: We'll jump at the chance to talk about anyone affiliated with the mysterious SAULT collective. One of their most prominent voices, Cleo Sol, has here teamed up with her longtime producer friend Inflo for her second album, 'Mother'. This 12-track LP spans neo-soul, jazz and folk, and chronicles Sol's turbulent transition into motherhood. Across solitary ballads like 'Sunshine' and radiant folk dirges like 'Know That You Are Loved' and 'Promises', this album sounds purer in contrast to her debut 'Rose In The Dark'. Watch out for the hidden tracks on this vinyl edition.

Review: An integral figure on the Motor City scene for the best part of two decades, Specter has always been a particularly prolific producer. Built To Last - appearing on Theo Parrish's significant Sound Signature label - is his first album-length excursion. It offers an expansive summary of his inspirations and influences - many will notice subtle nods towards local deep house, techno and electro heroes, as well as more experimental synthesizer music, off-kilter electronic jazz-funk, deep space dub and eyeliner-clad early '80s synth-wave - while also showcasing a trademark sound that's every bit as dusty, warm, loose and lo-fi as his lauded Detroit peers.

Review: For the first time, David Sylvian's 29-track career retrospective, Everything & Nothing, comes to vinyl format. Spanning the incipience of Sylvian's craft with key cuts from his Japan and Rain Tree Crow days, through to his solo years with Virgin Records, this is a right summative beauty. We're surprised by its oversight on the part of record companies until now, with the album having initially only made it to a short CD and Minidisc run. Sylvian's sonic and lyrical Romanticism shines as brightly as ever here, with the pith at the wilful core of the record cogent in the pre-chorus line of 'The Scent Of Magnolia': "none of the history books describe what I've seen." Here we're also met with new remixes of 'Ghosts' and 'Bamboo Houses', as well as new session versions of tracks from the standout albums Secrets Of The Beehive and Dead Bees On A Cake.

Review: Rhythm Section International turns ten this yearia whole decade since Bradley Zero started what seemed like a modest project, spinning out of those infamous Peckham pool hall parties. But modest it was not. In those ten years, Rhythm Section became more than just a label. It became a pulseia defining force in London's music landscape, rippling out across the globe. To celebrate the milestone, Rhythm Section has pulled together something that's as much a reflection as it is a bold step forward: a three-part compilation titled PAST, RE-IMAGINED AND FUTURE. Six discs, 30 tracks, spanning the label's evolution while pointing toward its next era. The first two discs? A dive into history, with one track from each year since 2014ia walk through the archives that pulls out deep cuts and forgotten classics. Then we get into the RE-IMAGINED part, where artists from the label like Ruf Dug, Session Victim, and Private Joy reinterpret past tracks in their own styles. No gimmicksijust raw, playful creativity that breathes new life into the old. And finally, the FUTURE: two discs of brand-new material for 2024. Artists like RONI, Gayance, and Jordan Rakei under his Frank Liin alias step forward to show where the label's heading, blending genres and moods seamlessly. What's special about this release is that it never feels like it's trying too hardiit's a reflection of the organic growth that's made Rhythm Section what it is today. Ten years in, and the label's as forward-thinking, alternative and grounded as ever.

Review: The Road To Hell Is Paved With Good Intentions a rare kind of affirmation, one that has the power to course-correct many a sensitive soul whose 'meaning well' might have more unintended negative consequences than good. It's also exactly the kind of title that London experimental electronic producer Vegyn would choose for a mixtape-album; it inspires a kind of wisdom-starved curiosity in those who might seek to plug that gap via the music of an artist more experienced than they. But in this case, beyond this title, Vegyn has no further wisdom to impart than reams of his signature trip-hop and IDM glossouts, featuring fellow London regulars such as Ethan P. Flynn, Lauren Auder, Lea Sen and John Glacier; the album is transcendent in timbre, seeming to constantly push at the limits of Vegyn's stereotypically snappier and sparser sound.

Review: There's a growing feeling both inside and outside jazz that Kamasi Washington could well turn out to be one of the style's all-time greats. He's certainly making all the right moves, delivering thought-provoking concept albums of eyebrow-raising length that simply refuse to settle on one sound, rhythm, style or sub-genre. Heaven & Earth, his first album for almost three years, continues this trend, comprising angry instrumental answers to America's growing issues with class division and racism, Rotary Connection style workouts, Sun Ra-esque spiritual workouts, funk and soul-influenced burners, spiraling choral and orchestral affairs, and electric fusions of rubbery synth-funk and mind-altering jazz-blues. Typically, the results are never less than sublime, with Washington's virtuoso saxophone playing taking centre stage throughout.
