Review: Benny Sings heads back to his roots in beat making and hop hop here on Beat Tape II. He says that "First and foremost, I'm a beat-maker. When I write songs, I always start with the beat." That plays out across these perfectly designed fonts which are raw and organic, loose and catchy from the off. Guests spots from St. Panther, Kenny Beats, Cory Henry, Oddisee, and Koreatown Oddity layer in some sweet bars to this perfect suer soundtrack. It lasts just over half an hour but is so packed with detail it can be played don loop and reveal more each time.

Review: This new album from Benny Sings comes in various different formats - a blue vinyl included, while this version is a straight back wax copy. It features Amsterdam-based artist Benny Sings - who recently had his ART album reissued on Sings - returning with an all new and new eighth solo studio album. For the first time, it is one that finds him working with a single producer throughout - and that producer is the well known beatmaker Mr Kenny Beats. It was a partnership that came together after a chat over social media and the pair immediately felt comfortable with each other. Benny instructed Kenny that he wanted to make the biggest record he has to date and that's what they have done.

Review: The three percussion experts behind the seminal indie rock/post rock band Tortoise showcase their rhythmical prowess, coming together for this self-titled concept break-beat record entitled "Bumps". As members of Tortoise, these three gentlemen helped infuse a new aesthetic into the indie rock scene of the nineties. The group set itself apart by focusing on instrumental prowess and group interaction. Instead of the tried and true themes of familiar alternative and punk, Tortoise opened up their scope of influences to create a new musical vision, dubiously called 'post rock'. They incorporated styles from genres such as Krautrock, dub, avant-garde jazz, classical minimalism, ambient and space music, film music and British electronica. One of indie rock's most in-demand master producers of the last decade, Tortoise’s producer/drummer/vibes player John McEntire has worked with a staggering number of artists as engineer, producer and remixer. With Bumps he lends his talents toward pushing the boundaries of a typical break-beat record, fusing influences from funk, Brazilian, Latin and Afrobeat music.

Review: Richmond beatmaker DJ Harrison is back with his second full length, Tales from the Old Dominion. This album finds the multi-talented artist play every single instrument on it after three heard years of graft. It swallows up a myriad of influences from across the ages such as soul, funk, rock, R&B, hip-hop, all with his own unique collage yet cohesive style. There are forward looking disco cuts, rubbery basslines, heart meltingly smooth neo-soul sounds and spaced-out hip-hop joints for the late night hours. This is a fresh record desire its nod to classic black music.

Review: The superb Shades of Yesterday is an all-new covers album by the triple Grammy Award-nominated producer, musician, and songwriter, DJ Harrison. With almost every instrument played and produced by the man himself, the album is a deeply personal homage to the musical influences that have defined his work. It also draws from his upbringing in Richmond and his journey to musical prominence with re-imagined tracks by beloved artists such as The Beatles, Stevie Wonder, Ohio Players, Donald Fagen, and more. Each song is a reflection of Harrison's fondest memories and a testament to his evolution as a musician and adds up to a fantastically nostalgic trip with a new school edge.

Review: Stone's Throw has never really made any wrong moves in our opinion, and here the label puts its full force behind a deceptively powerful album. Taking us to places that are deeper than perhaps what the imprint is best known for, this is immersive, hypnotic, otherworldly stuff made from a variety of plugged in machines, analogue and otherwise, including a semi-modular synth. The result is a journey-style collection packed with atmosphere but one that's also painstakingly detailed and textured. Sound waves are rendered almost visible by the movements, drones, tracks and other pieces here, drum and effects machines producing the kind of noises that mesmerise and suck you in further as time passes. Tunes to get lost in, the only remaining question is whether anyone will ever want to return.

Review: COLDWAVE/SYNTH: Bruce Haack has remained something of a long term fancy for Stones Throw boss Peanut Butter Wolf over the years, with the 2010 reissue of Farad - The Electric Voice complemented by appearances from the prolific Canadian composer in numerous PBW mixes over the years. And now the label presents this sublime set of remixes which cast the likes of Prince Language, James Pants, Vex Ruffin and Peanut Butter Wolf himself in the role of revising material from Haack's acclaimed 1970 LP Electric Lucifer, along with its follow-up Electric Lucifer, Book II and material from various other releases from Haack that surfaced over the years. The Prince Language remix of "Party Machine" and an absolute freak beat monolith version of "Chant Of The Sun" by the Pants man stand out, but the whole thing is dripping in that Stones Throw quality.

And now he offers up this splendid double 12". It is a masterful mix of pensive piano, jazz chord work and downtempo drums. There are lush, synth laced soundscapes for late night lovers, funk-fuelled, sax-driven jams and then cosmic, starry-eyed mood pieces that encourage your mind to wander. It is another essential release from this fine talent.

This one takes on the ideas of transition, of growing old and rising fiends, looking for new purpose as life changes and trying to stay hopeful. It features a host of the beat maker's mates such as Sara Sithi-Amnuai on trumpet, Will Logan on drums and Paul Castelluzzo on guitar, and also includes some great covers of The Cure's 'In Between Days' and Roy Ayers's 'Everybody Loves The Sunshine.'

Review: Having recently unfurled one synth-laden future jazz-funk classic (John Carroll Kirby's superb Blowout), Stones Throw delivers another fabulous album informed by the intersection between jazz, funk and synth sounds. Of course, Kiefer Shackleford's work has always been far more informed by hip-hop than Kirby's, and that remains a key point of difference on It's OK B U. While Shackleford loves showcasing his own piano and synth work (and it's those elements that frequently catch the ear), the accompanying beats - a mixture of head-nodding, Guru and Dilla style grooves, Flying Lotus style experiments, chopped-up breaks, wayward Dam Funk style affairs and slipped jazz rhythms - are equally as potent.

This record was recorded at an intimate, secret Los Angeles show in April 2023 and includes a brand-new title track alongside selections from Kiefer's catalogue and a moving rendition of Bobby Hutcherson's 'Montara'. A GRAMMY-winning artist, Kiefer has worked with Anderson .Paak and Drake and recently performed an NPR Tiny Desk concert with Nate Smith, Carrtoons, Theo Croker and Charlie Hunter which have helped establish him on the world stage. This album is one that will resonate with fans of acts like Theo Croker, Mndsgn and Dinner Party.

Review: There's a definite sense of "time and place" throughout John Carrol Kirby's latest album, Blowout. He recorded it all during a recent trip to Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica, "between 5am wake-up calls from orpopendola birds and psychedelic sunsets", drawing inspiration from the people, music and nature that surrounded him. It's certainly a joyful and colourful affair - despite his insistence that it's about "enjoying yourself even though life is tough, before the candle blows out" - with Kirby mixing sparkling, often kaleidoscopic 1980s electrofunk synth sounds with warming grooves, pastoral woodwind instrumentation, and musical motifs that draw on his love of jazz-funk and fusion. It's basically a sensationally summery affair whose mostly subtly nods to Costa Rican musical culture only enhance the album.

Review: Los Angeles' beat-maker Ringgo Achetta has released some fine music under the MNDSGN moniker, including solid sets for Leaving Records and Fresh Selects. Body Wash marks his return to Stones Throw after a two year absense, and is every bit as vibrant and colourful as you'd expect. Rooted in a particularly psychedelic take on hip-hop, soul and jazz, the album's 16 tracks flit between acid-fried boogie, sumptuous slow jams, head-nodding jazz-funk instrumentals, jazzy interludes, and spaced-out, soft-touch songs whose lyrics reference love and space in equal measure. There's no doubt that Achetta has a unique musical voice - think Dam Funk, Nilsson and Madlib jamming in space - and this comes through loud and clear on Body Wash.

Review: Mndsgn is back with a third installment in the Snax Records series which started back in 2019 with the eponymous first album, then took in Rare Pleasures back in June of 2021 and now reverts back to the original title for a trilogy outing. The prolific LA-based musician and producer cuts a little more loose and gets more free on this long player though retains all of the signature elements of his much-loved sound. It is full of rhythmic invention and plenty of bright melodic flair though it also has a whimsical sense of humour across its many bitesize but brilliant tracks.

Review: L.A. songwriter, producer, and performer Jerry Paper, also known as Lucas Nathan, is back with a rather impressive tenth studio album, INBETWEEZER. This new and vital collection features a blend of crooning rockers and bubble-pop jams that do a good job of showcasing the artist's playful and experimental spirit. The album delves into complex emotions as he embarks on a journey of "radical growth" through therapy and ultimately discovers the path to becoming a therapist. Each track grapples with themes of change, unlearning past behaviours and the continuous cycle of personal development. As such this is more than just a good listen is a thought-provoking work that prompts lots of inward reflection as you experience the artist's introspective exploration and joyful creativity.

Review: When he returned to action after three decades with 2018's "Wanna Be Your Man", Bay Area electrofunk musician Prophet was appreciative of the support of Peanut Butter Wolf and designated producer Mndsgn. For "Don't Forget It", his first album, he's decided to flip the script, self-producing a record for the first time since 1984. As a result, the ten tracks on show are a little more raw and sparse than you might expect, with Prophet serving up soulful and emotional songs that brilliantly fuse a variety of sounds and styles (think 1980s AOR rock, hip-hop, electronica, glitch-hop, synth-pop, electrofunk and vaporwave) to create something genuinely new and fresh.

Review: Wide Through The Eyes Of No One is a second album from The Steoples. The avant-soul pair of GB aka Gifted & Blessed and DJ Spinna and Theo Parrish collaborator Yeofi combine their different musical backgrounds to great effect here. Latin rhythms, '80s soul, sombre folk and R&B all feature alongside confessional lyrics from Yeofi that muse on isolation. A host of live instrumentation keeps each track fresh and original as the pair explore music and philosophy from two different perspectives. Check the title track as a fine indication of the richness of this record.

It is a record about making progress and artistically it sure does that with tunes that pair meticulous production with powerful messages. Review: In the year 2000 Madlib seriously began to explore the sonic collision of classic jazz, funk and fusion with present-day hip-hop. He set to work with his Yesterdays New Quintet, a combo of five esoteric jazz cats who were unheard of then and unseen even now. Today, all five "players" - by now, obviously all alter-egos of Madlib himself - alongside a host of new incarnations showcase their talents on "Yesterday's Universe". Here he veers between tight, funky electric trios, widescreen soundtrack vibes and free astral jazz, plus much, much more. Special guests on this album include Azymuth legend Ivan Conti (aka Mamao and Karriem Riggins), producer for the likes of Common, Slum Village and J Dilla.
