Michael Prophet - "Body Fusion" (version) (3:41)
Protek - "I Love To Dance With You" (The Nightlark edit) (6:16)
The Cool-Notes - "Natural Energy" (5:07)
Ilija Rudman - "Dub 4 Love" (Secret Weapon mix) (5:59)
Review: This third volume of instrumentals continues the faultless Isle of Jura label's deep dive into dub versions and beyond. Side one takes in references from UK street soul and reggae and features two late-'80s tracks by Howard Hill with machine-led rhythms, rudeboy reggae skank and soulful pads. Protek's 'I Love to Dance With You' is a proto-house gem featured in a Jura Soundsystem mix and here it gets a loving re-edit by The Nightlark. Side B includes an instrumental-driven track with spacey FX from The Cool Notes' and Ilija Rudman's 'Dub 4 Love' which is a knowing nod to acid house's golden era.

Voertuig - "Cego" (5:19)

Eoism - "Even Flow" (5:45)
Review: Colkin from Raw Soul and Mauke Club sets the tone on this new FUTUR compilation, which has been curated by Benedikt Meger with a spherical acid house meditation. Peter Seiler's track, a standout from the reissue of his debut album Flying Frames, features Sheryl Hackett's soulful vocals and merges song structure with jazz improvisation. Eoism from Pulse Drift, Undersound, and Inch By Inch delivers low-swung electro flavours perfect for sunset vibes while the B-side opens with Voertuig of Tonal Oceans and Cobra Club who presents a seriously raw acid jam followed by an experimental, jazzy piece, reminiscent of the 90s downtempo era. 'Eoism' closes things with a floating, futuristic banger, going to make a well rounded (in more ways than one) and ultimately very useful piece of vinyl.

Review: 'Suite For Chick' is a heartfelt tribute to the late jazz legend Chick Corea. This 12" was assembled to reimagine classics like 'City Gate, Rumble,' 'Time Track,' 'Hymn of the Heart' and Return to Forever's 'Romantic Warrior.' It finds Bangkok-based Maarten Goetheer collaborating with Thailand's jazz virtuoso Pong Nakornchai and blending Wurlitzer chords, Moog basslines, ARP leads and Rhodes phasings. Inspired by his jazz-pianist father, Maarten fuses classic jazz with modern genres like techno, cosmic disco and ambient for a fresh take on jazz fusion. These electrifying interpretations honour Corea's pioneering legacy in jazz and fusion from his groundbreaking work with Miles Davis to founding Return to Forever.

Review: Luca LTJ Trevisi is LTJ Xperience and he began his DJ and producer career in the 80s. He was a resident at two of Italy's most acclaimed clubs and sure knows how to craft a tune. As well as his own originals he is a master of the remix and someone who can rework any cut to be even more potent not he floor. He proves that here with four new versions that span deep and dreamy and cosmic disco. Review: Nurtured by Mudd and owners of their own stunning live band, Paqua should really deliver more Balearic bliss than they have. As we wait tentatively for more heartfelt, organic sun-kissed soul, Claremont 56 have commissioned some incredible remixes... "Late Train" gets a full cosmic treatment from the Idjut Boys while Emperor Machine takes it down a dark alley and roughs it up with a series of analogue synth slaps. Ray Mang, meanwhile, focuses on the dreamiest aspects of "The Visitor" and rearranges and polishes them in a way that's reminiscent of a certain Andrew Ashong. Stunning.

Review: Sean Worsey was a successful lawyer in California when he started getting emails about some music he had released and all but forgotten about back in the 1980s with an obscure band called Passion Theatre. He eventually agreed for one of the tracks to be included on Charles Bals' Retour Au Club Meduse compilation before agreeing to let Sapcetalk put out both of the EPs in full. And here they are - Strange Desire and Mannequin have been assembled together on this gatefold double LP. The music mixes up super tight, high speed funk, strident disco and post-punk energy into a collection of dance floor ready cuts with personality to spare.

Review: London duo Payfone return to Golf Channel with two more stately ageless gems. "Justified" takes a similar tone to their previous floor-burner "Quarantine", all star-lit and subtly cosmic, but with added soul snippets and textures wrapping around the groove like tailored faux fur. "We Are Chains" builds even more fervour with serious spiritual muscle as a Romanthony-level vocal preaches gutsily over another brilliantly slow, steady and broadsword dub disco groove. Definitely something to phone home about.

Review: Freeezy does it. John Rocca's more synth-based side project Pink Rhythm continues its reissue revival with this highly sought-after 12" that's not been reissued since 1985. Peak yacht funk with all the lavish production flourishes of the era, and strong traces of jazz, each cut stimulates: "Melodies Of Love" is all about the falsettos and Balearic charm while "Walking In The Rain" is a sultry sax-blaster with some of the most powerful bass walks Beggars Banquet ever pressed. Review: Invisible City Editions hows better than most how to dig for classic old treasures. They have made plenty of stars and big tues over the course of the last 17 such relates and this 18th is another gem. Shawn Pittiman's 'Dreams' has tinny but heartfelt 80s drum work. The kicks stagger beneath stepping synth sequences, lush strings and a gorgeous, echoing female vocal. After a subtle tweaked remix version 'I'm Losing Control' is an all out, crashing 80s port house cut with more rugged synth work and another fine vocal. The extended Bass-ment club mix makes it a deeper, more hypnotic groove.

Review: Star Creature is very much leading from the front right now if you like cosmic disco. Tim Zawada's label is back with another delicious dose of the stuff here as Plastic Bamboo heads out on a crime jazz exploration of the outer reaches of our galaxy. His lithe beats and rugged drums are laced up with marvellous synths that are ever on the move. They shine bright and bring real sugary rushes of joy as curious narratives and intergalactic intrigue come thick and fast. Amongst the big bright cuts are some more mellow moments like the wonderful 'A Scene At The Sea' with its hints of Afro percussion. Delightful.

Review: Taken from his debut album, released in 1976, Italian composer legend Presti's rawest funk roots are explored and celebrated to great effect right here. "Funky Bump" lives up to its name beautifully with very neat organ stabs and a relentless groove that's not dissimilar to Grace Jones' "Pull Up To The Bumper". Looking for a much dreamier, dewy eyed jam? Flip for the lavish whirls and swirls of "C. So Buenos Aires"... It couldn't be more 1976 (or Italian) if it tried.

Review: The Dig This Way label outta Italy continues to build a fine head of steam with its stomping second disco release. 'Spell Bound' comes from PSK, and is taken from their one and only album Disco Season back in 1980. It was the opening track on that album, written by Austine Rigar and Jones Coakly, and is a bright, joyful groove. The big vocals bring exotic international flavours over the funky bass work, trilling drums and afro-tinged rhythms. ON the flip is another tune from that album, 'Revolution (Work Hard In Your Life)' that is all pixelated synth leads, afro-drum patterns and even a hint of ska swagger.

Review: Plenty of dark disco's finest practitioners come together on this new 12" on Iptamenos Discos, with Psycho Weazel serving up the original tune. They are two producers from Switzerland who mix up indie-dance, cold wave, breakbeat and EBM. Here they offer 'Mains D'Argile' featuring Curses which has sweeping, widescreen synths bring a retro feel to a stiff, kinetic beat. The wonderful Marvin & Guy offer an extended mix for extra long club fun and then it is Local Suicide who guests on 'Matra Murena' which brings a perfect mix of light and dark to stark grooves, and Rafael Cerato remixes to close out the package.

Review: Club Sweat bring back one of their big hits from last year for another bout - surely one of the biggest releases on the label to date, in fact. Purple Disco Machine struck gold with "Dished (Male Stripper)" not least thanks to that nagging synth hook, and now there's a full-fat vinyl release bolstered by some essential remixes. The first is from Illyus & Barrientos, who tastefully dub the track out without losing that big room sparkle. Then Tuff City Kids inject a little festival fever into the track with some zesty leads they wield so well. The B-side packs a full eight-minute extended version of the original for those who just want the hit to last even longer.

Review: Three years ago, Four Flies Records released a previously unknown album from library music composer Guiliano Sorgini called Africa Oscura - a set of dark, intoxicating instrumentals originally intended to soundtrack documentaries. Now they've decided to get it remixed, with the results being shared over two EPs. There's plenty to admire on this second volume. Jolly Mare step up first with a near perfect Afro-cosmic take on 'Afro Sortilegio'-all tribal percussion, doom-laden bass, funky Clavinet motifs and spacey synth sounds- before PAd [sic] delivers the 'Mondo Bali' mix of 'Notte Nella Savala' -a deep, moody and bass-heavy workout with added delay-laden keys. Elsewhere, Quiroga and Dario Bass reinvent 'Oasi Nella Giungla' is a deep synth-funk warmer, and Paine re-casts 'Miraggio' as a gently but funky Balearic gem.

In honour of that, they have put together this lovely picture disc with six of what they think of as their most classic songs. The wax has art on both front and back and comes in a special sleeve so looks as good as it sounds with plenty of disco goodness. Review: Use Vinyl looks back to two iconic tracks from the 70s and 80s here for source material for a new remix EP by the Vannelli family. Joe T remixes 'Thrill Me' by The Wonderland Band into the sort of direct and funky house sound that brims with early dance music charm while the Vannelli Bros offer their rework of 'Party On' by Pure Energy which comes with plenty of energy for club contexts. Both tracks are presented as Classic Mix versions and bring plenty of new life to the original hits without forgoing the timeless, catchy and meaningful melodies that define the originals. House music like this is as authentic as it gets.

Review: 94 East's debut studio compilation, Dance To The Music Of The World features the late great Prince showcasing his multi-instrumental talents on drums, guitar, and synthesizer. Originally recorded in the summer of 1978 at Sound 80, Minneapolis, Minnesota, during the same sessions as 'Lovin' Cup' and 'Just Another Sucker,' the title track remained unreleased in its original 1978 form. Additional recording took place at Blue Wave Recording Studio, St. Philip, Barbados, by Pepe Willie, as with the other tracks featured on here. It is a great collection of funked-up sounds from the Purple one that remind of his untouchable genius.

Review: For the label's latest release, the dusty-fingered diggers behind Archeo Recordings have decided to reissue a little-known but undeniably brilliant album from fellow Italians Fulvio Maras, Alfredo Posllipo and Luco Proietta. Recorded in 1992 and originally released in staggeringly low numbers (only 300 were pressed first time around), "Sfumature" drew on a disparate array of influences (think jazz, ambient, new age, fourth world, Afro-cosmic and electronica for starters) and loose-limbed drumming and melodious percussion instrumentation (marimba, glockenspiel etc) with ear-catching synthesizer sounds, sparse drum machine rhythms and occasional improvised vocals. It's a genuinely unique sounding anthem and well worth picking up, especially in this highly limited white vinyl pressing (apparently only 100 of these exist).

Review: Since first popping up in 2009, Rebolledo and Aksel Schuaffer's Pachanga Boys project has attracted a lot of attention. Given the curious contents of this in turns zany, inspired and downright odd debut album, it's easy to see why. Split between silly skits featuring tongue-in-cheek female spoken word vocals and fully formed tracks, it's like a stripped back South American/German take on the formidably over the top musings of Mungolian Jetset. By and large, the rhythms are sparse but heavy, featuring fuzzy basslines, distorted drum machine grooves and curious electronic pulses. It's good fun, sitting somewhere between bonkers electronica, wonky house and camp leftfield silliness. Throughout, it's bursting with weird and wonderful ideas.

Review: There was a sense of inevitability when Mark Barrott's International Feel label revealed plans to issue a new album from Ibizan legend Jose Padilla, the pair go together like Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall. What makes So Many Colours particularly special is the fact Padilla got the chance to work with Barrott, Running Back affiliate Telephones, Australian producer Tornado Wallace and Jan 'Wolf Muller' Schulte, a list of artists that share a common approach to the idea and concept of being Balearic. As you would expect, copious amounts of fluttering beats, Spanish guitar strumming and deep throbbing arpeggiated basslines feature throughout So Many Colours and it's really a pleasure from beginning to end!

This new and vital collection features a blend of crooning rockers and bubble-pop jams that do a good job of showcasing the artist's playful and experimental spirit. The album delves into complex emotions as he embarks on a journey of "radical growth" through therapy and ultimately discovers the path to becoming a therapist. Each track grapples with themes of change, unlearning past behaviours and the continuous cycle of personal development. As such this is more than just a good listen is a thought-provoking work that prompts lots of inward reflection as you experience the artist's introspective exploration and joyful creativity.

Review: Prolfic producer Neiro 'Papik' Poggi founded the Soultrend Orchestra almost 15 years ago as a vehicle for his acid jazz, funk, soul, disco and jazz-funk fantasies. The project has been 'on ice' for a while, with Now Imagine, officially the band's second studio set, appearing a decade after its predecessor. It's a typically musically rich affair with a string of guest vocalists joining the expansive 'orchestra' to run through happy, sun-splashed tracks. Highlights come thick and fast throughout, from a lightly Latin-tinged cover of Sister Sledge disco classic 'Lost In Music' and the Jamiroquai-esque warmth and soul of 'Wiser' (featuring Wendy D Lewis), to the vibraphone-wielding smooth grooves of 'Touched By Your Love' and the glossy jazz-funk-goes-house rainbows of 'You Came Along' (featuring Steve Biondi).

The sider-songwriter at the heart of the operation does a fine job of trying the whole thing together with his soothing and soaring tones and the tempos range from tropical bliss to peak time party. This is the band's most widescreen album yet, and therefore their best.

Review: During its lifespan, sadly departed London club Plastic People had it all: an intimate space to dance, an astonishingly good audiophile sound system, and a crew of resident DJs that included the mighty Theo Parrish. The Detroiter's sets there, which ran for a minimum of six hours, have naturally become the stuff of legend. Three years after the club closed, Parrish has decided to release the recording of his final set there - a thrillingly free-wheeling, three-disc voyage that dizzily and gleefully joins the dots between jazz, soul, disco, funk, deep house, acid, techno and much more besides. The three discs capture Parrish at his most lively and esoteric, providing a musical journey that will delight dancers and armchair listeners alike.

Review: While he may be known to a whole generation of DJs as one half of Tiger & Woods, Marco Passarani has been releasing futuristic, synth-heavy techno, electro and disco since the early 1990s. The Rome-based veteran's latest album, his first for three years, offers a vibrant, colourful and exquisitely produced musical trip powered forwards by a timeless trademark sound that subtly pays tribute to various styles of futuristic electronic music of the last four decades while sounding formidably timeless. It's a brilliantly listenable set all told, with our picks of a very strong bunch including the deep space ambient drift of 'Revelation', the deep instrumental synth-pop warmth of 'Theme From FFM', the dubby proto-house drive of 'Serenity Alley', the bleep-style weight of 'Equation' and the alien electro snap of 'Storm 90'.

Review: The Tiger & Woods label and collaborative partnership has cornered the market in new school but classicaly inclined synth heavy and Italo disco. Now one half of that pair - the enigmatic Marco Passarani aka David Woods - steps out with some sublime sonic saucery on this new album Shuffling The Cards Again. It is full of irresistible dance floor grooves and bright, neon-stained chords, ass-wiggling basslines and superb synth lines that take you back to an 80s dance floor in an instant. Deeper cuts like 'Saturday Romance' hit the mark too but the upbeat funk of 'Videomusic 0300 AM' is where this album really shines.

Review: God bless XL Recordings. The UK label has been at the forefront of boundary pushing music since its inception, and almost 35 years remains a seal of quality. A constant source of inspiring surprises and new sonic experiences. The kind of organisation that will take a punt on British polymath Jai Paul's demo album, which, by all accounts, is pretty hard to describe, let alone define. More so, the type of team that would, eight years earlier, support and release one of the artist's earliest songs, 'BTSTU'. Coming full circle, that tune closes this collection of stuff produced around the same time, all of which was going to form the debut album, Bait Ones. One low-quality CD-R of the work stolen and then leaked online later, and the artist stepped away from music until the end of the last decade, when this "perfectly imperfect" LP was finally allowed to see the light of day. A lo fi, glitchy, trippy, granular, sexy sound that owes as much to hip hop, pop and r&b as experimental noise, ambient dub, and electronic soul.

Review: Ilan Pdahtzur is as obsessive a record digger as any of his more visible peers. His particular niche is early to mid-eighties club music, and now he gets a platform to show off his skills thanks to the Spacetalk label. "Night City Life" is about music to match that exact setting - nocturnal urban metropolises with glowing neon lights shimmering in the darkness. There's a lot to love across four sides of vinyl here, from Italo disco to steamy boogie cuts and iridescent synth jams. It will make you nostalgic for a time and place you've never experienced (at least not as perfectly as this) and no doubt get plenty of dance floors on their feet.

Review: Aaron Coyes and Indra Dunis resurface with a sixth studio LP as Peaking Lights with Cosmic Logic the end product of some 18 months of recording in their newly built Los Angeles studio. Arriving two years on from the double dose of Peaking Lights that was Lucifer/Lucifer In Dub, this new long player finds Coyes and Dunis piloting through an ever more expansive array of sounds with brighter and bolder results. There are evidently plenty of stylistic influences at play beyond the obvious nods to digi dub, boogie and Italo that have been apparent in previous Peaking Lights albums and it really does feel like the pair's most confident and focused LP to date.

Review: While the noise swirling around them is getting close to deafening, you get the feeling that the hype wouldn't penetrate the ethereal bubble that Peaking Lights exist in. The partnership of Indra Dunis and Aaron Coyes exudes innocence and wide-eyed delight at every turn - in that sense they make a pleasing departure from much of the current lo-fi zeitgeist. Where many of these artists have staked their claim to degraded sonics through a cacophony of noise and scrubbed-out vocals, Peaking Lights have a delicate, charming nature to them which uses withered production traits as a pathway rather than an end point. There's no denying that Lucifer is lo-fi (they even wryly name on of their tracks "Lo-Hi" on the album) but they don't use that aesthetic to mask the music that they make. Rather it sounds like they really don't have anything else to make their songs with other than Coyes' ropey home-made equipment and a battered four-track recorder. Whether this really is the case or not, there's no air of contrivance about Peaking Lights. For that reason alone the hype is well and truly justified. Highly recommended.

It tracks a five-year sonic journey through Florence, London and Los Angeles and takes in all the sounds of those places so blends disco, electro, nu-jazz and Japanese City Pop into a rich, genre-spanning sound. True to its name (Pacifico means "peaceful" in Italian) the album captures the reflective calm of travel's end and has collaborations with artists like Kuntessa, VANBASTEN, Natalie Findlay, Jules Apollinaire and others bringing their own depth to the project. The result is a multicultural tapestry of sound that is full of warmth, groove and introspection.

Review: Pellegrino & Zodyaco's skillfully intertwine Neapolitan disco, funk, jazz and world music while channelling a spirit of creative escape of this new album, which is inspired by Henri Laborit's 'Eloge de la fuite'. It explores conscious escapism as a return to authenticity and seeks a "common language" through sound by merging Mediterranean melodies with global rhythms, vintage instruments and ethnic percussion that all bridge past and present. Four years after his last outing, Morphe, Pellegrino is still in top form here with a soulful, genre-blurring portrait of modern Naples that reflects the fact that, in the city, musical traditions meet modern experimentation.

Review: Eary Sounds boss Pellegrino S. Sinchelotto founded the Zodyaco project two years as an umbrella for his ongoing studio collaborations with an ever-changing cast of musicians, vocalists and producers. Morphe, the project's second full-length excursion, continues in a similar vein to its predecessor, offering a similarly attractive mix of tracks that effortlessly blur the boundaries between mid-80s Balearic synth-pop, jazz-funk, zouk, Afro-cosmic, AOR disco and intergalactic boogie. With quality musicianship, colourful melodic motifs and accurately depicted period details to the fore, it's the sort of set that would now be considered a Balearic classic had it been released in 1885 rather than 2020. In other words, Morphe is an album you need in your life right now.

Review: Original disco remixer John Morales has spent much of the last decade delivering superb, multi-track reworks of classic cuts, in the process showcasing the sublime musicianship and vocals at the heart of these much-loved classics. He's the perfect choice, then, to dip into the immense back catalogue of leading Philadelphia Soul star Teddy Pendergrass and deliver updated versions. The resultant two-disc set is as inspired as you'd expect, with Morales delivering a blend of peak-time ready revisions of surging dancefloor anthems ('The More I Get, The More I Want', 'Don't Leave Me This Way', 'You Can't Hide From Yourself', 'Life is a Song Worth Singing'), sensitive revisions of deeper catalogue cuts and stunning reworks of jaw-dropping slow jams. Throughout, the troubled but immensely talented singer remains the undisputed star of the show.

Review: Perel's sophomore album Jesus Was An Alien continues in some ways from the themes she brought to her debut, 2018's Hermetica on DFA. The tracks are rich, lush in design and multi-layered with plenty of emotional uplift. While inspired by a raft of the best indie hitmakers she has her own sound which is perfect for the dance floor but also suited to listing away from the club. "Jesus Was An Alien is a discourse about whether Jesus was an actual alien" she explains, amusingly. When the debate sounds this good, no one cares about the answers.

Review: The Moving Music label continues to unearth some ridiculously odd and inspired Norwegian movie soundtracks. Their latest is taken from 1978's Operasjon Cobra, a "youth movie" with a plot that involves a group of Oslo teenagers foiling a terror plot. The soundtrack, which appears to be one of the first to be completed by obscure Norwegian composer (and former prog rocker) Pete Knutsen, flits between Blaxploitation-inspired jazz-funk, cheery, horn-and-Clavinet-heavy post-disco instrumentals, experimental jazz, creepy synthesizer soundscapes, jazz guitar-rich ambient and heavy funk-rock. Throughout, the production is admirably lo-fi, with Knutsen keeping the tracks largely free of effects or post-production trickery.

Kudos then to Belgrade crew Disco Not Disco who have reissued the album with the official blessing of Boban himself for the interest of those partial to some Balkan Disco but not at the premium prices the original pressing is listed at. Petrovic's work is new to us and it may be new to you but fans of the weirder strains of disco will resonate immediately with this eight track set with plenty of material you could envisage Alexis le Tan or Young Marco slipping in their sets.

Review: Originally released as a private pressing, Magnetic Eyes by Jeff Phelps has inspired myriad contemporary greats with its modern soul, electro-boogie, and disco score, which first arrived in 1985. DaM Funk loves it so much apparently he once said: "Beautiful chords throughout via warm synths & keyboards, great drum machine usage, topped with unique vocals, resulting in satisfying aural, electric-analog-soul pleasures."

Hit play and you immediately see what he means. Although this is very much machine music, there's a loose feeling to the arrangements, which feel born more from funk than electro. Shades of an experimental Prince are audible in some sections, synthesised soul is constant and the dance floor potential of the predominantly upbeat tracks cannot be denied.

It was written in 1984 by Japanese funk and synth pop act Piper, a collective of synth, drum, percussion, bass and keys players with added vocals who channel lush AOR vibes onto a Balearic dance floor. With its romantic laments and soulful funk, the album has become a cult favourite that has been basically unavailable since its first pressing. So, pour yourself a cocktail, fill up the inflatable pool and don those shades for a perfectly escapist and throwback afternoon.

That changes now as he lands on Star Creature with his delightful debut record New Funk. It is his fifth project with the top Chicago label and maybe his best - and not just because it includes the brilliant 'The Chocolate Lover' which is a tune that has come to define his sound. All around it are plenty of timeless disco and boogie-tinged delights with live drums and funky guitar fretwork. Some are low-slung and sleazy, some upbeat and fun, all of them come with irresistible vocals from Pitman.

Review: California-based Balearic disco duo Poolside first made a splash in 2010 with thrilling debut single 'Do You Believe?'. Two years later and they came on just as strong with their debut album - a typically West Coast-influenced fusion of lazy guitars, baggy grooves, subtle disco influences and shimmering dream pop compositions. Now marking its 10th anniversary it gets a special reissue. At times, they sound like Holy Ghost after a sack full of potent marijuana, at others like Windsurf or Hatchback making shuffling E-pop. It's an attractive sound, all told, touching on smacked-out slow jams, lazy disco and MDMA-laden indie-pop.

His Prime Choice album came on Shanell in 1983 and the one copy currently for sale on second-hand sites is over 630 quid. Thankfully Mad About has assembled this heavyweight reissue. Sentimental soul, analogue disco and lo-fi funk all characterise each tune, as does Calvin's own vocals which range from upbeat and positive to heartbroken and raw. A real gem.

Since then the collective has evolved by adding more experimental sounds to their vision of nightclub and basement music. This album continues their journey of genre-blending with the addition of Chris Penny, rising star Josh Ludlow, and original members Alinka and Lance Desardi. This one is taken from the original masters and marked her official singing debut. Many of these tunes made it into her films and steamy live shows.
