Review: Jeff Goldblum is a cult movie actor, a famously likeable bloke and also a damn good jazz singer and pianist with many essential works to his name. Now he has released two new singles featuring singer, songwriter and actress Haley Reinhart. Teaming up with his long-time band, The Mildred Snitzer Orchestra, for the occasion, the unlikely but accomplished pair deliver unique covers of Taylor Swift's hit 'Lover' and Loreen's 'Tattoo.' They add completely different musical perspectives to the delightful pop originals and both tunes are sure to appeal to a wide range of music lovers, not just fans of Goldblum.

Summer (The First Time) (3:38)
Review: American jazz pianist Gene Harris first released 'Losalamitoslatinfunklovesong' and its counterpart 'Summer' in 1974, when both initially appeared on the classic soul jazz album Astral Signal. Thereafter, it enjoyed a second bout of popularity after being picked up by the trailblazing rare groove scene in London. Now for a third: Selector Series now proffer another reissue of this rare groove workout, a Latin funk gem for an age not yet properly recorded or recognised. Snappy, pugilist drums, wowwing synths and filling choral counterpoints make this a real funk treat.

Jazz Carnival (3:34)
Magic Fly (3:06)
Review: Haze, an Exeter band that in 1981 endlessly toured the South West of England and released the album "SILVERTOPS REFLECTS HAZE" upon which many contemporary tracks were given the Haze treatment from Barry Manilow's 'I Can't Smile Without You' to Johnny Cash's 'Ghost Riders in the Sky'. In the mix Azymuth's Latin funk anthem 'Jazz Carnival' and Space's legendary electronic 'Magic Fly' surfaced, the latter two of which make up this exceptional 7" release by Panorama records, this relatively new label that celebrates idiosyncratic rarities. Haze seem to like breaking down the original and making space between the beats and yet on this A side an already pumping track pumps faster with an extra electronic edge on the Moog-ish organ, whilst paradoxically Haze's lead guitarist takes on Jose Roberto Bertrami's originally syncopated keys in a more regulated way - not a bad thing if not a jazz dancer but someone who just loves to dance! Intelligently, Panorama have coupled this with Haze's percussion heavy version of 'Magic Fly' on the B side, that even if it remains more so electronic, even poppy, it nicely compliments the Brazilian homage of side A. If you love a rare version, 7" 45s and early 80s jazz funk with a synthesised edge you'll love this.

Review: Jazz Peace has been digging in the archives to put together this new and limited 12", 'Happy Tears'. The original 1975 studio sessions captured the essence of Stockholm, Sweden, with tracks from the unreleased album Wildlife. Recorded during a pivotal moment in the mid-70s, this 45 offers up raw, unfiltered material that offers a glimpse into the creative process of the era. The music blends rich instrumentation with experimental flair that delivers a unique sound that's both nostalgic and timeless.

Review: Tension sees Ethio-jazz innovator Mulatu Astatke join forces with Tel Aviv's Hoodna Orchestra, creating a vibrant fusion of Astatke's signature sound with the orchestra's Afro funk dynamism. This collaboration is a masterclass in blending classic Ethio-jazz with contemporary influences. The album kicks off with 'Tension,' a track that infuses Astatke's enchanting vibraphone with a powerful rhythm section, driven by Matan Assayag's energetic drumming and a compelling brass motif. 'Major' later introduces a joyous, swinging groove, showcasing the orchestra's chemistry and Drabkin's stellar organ solo. Tracks like 'Hatula' and 'Yashan' capture a blend of intricate melodies and traditional Ethio-jazz flavours, while 'Delilah' reverently nods to Mulatu's early Latin-jazz roots. The album concludes with 'Dung Gate', a slow, mesmerising piece featuring Birenbaum's layered percussion and the brass section's evocative presence. Tension stands out as both a tribute to Astatke's legacy and a groundbreaking exploration in Ethio-jazz, marking a high point in the Hoodna Orchestra's evolving sound.

Review: Mulatu Astatke's collaboration with Tel Aviv's Hoodna Orchestra marks a vibrant reimagining of Ethio-jazz. The album, produced by Dap-King Neal Sugarman, showcases a blend of Astatke's iconic vibraphone with the Hoodna Orchestra's Afro-funk prowess. Opening with 'Tension', the track propels Astatke's signature sound into intense new rhythmic realms, featuring dynamic contributions from drummer Matan Assayag and a powerful brass section. 'Major' follows with a joyful swing, while 'Hatula' and 'Yashan' present diverse moods, from sultry to brooding, with impressive solos by organist Eitan Drabkin and baritone saxophonist Elad Gellert. 'Delilah' echoes Mulatu's Latin-jazz roots, with standout flute and guitar solos, leading into the album's closing track, 'Dung Gate'. This piece features a majestic brass and percussion finale, evoking the spirit of Sun Ra. Tension is both a tribute to Astatke's legacy and a bold new chapter in his Ethio-jazz journey, highlighting the Hoodna Orchestra's most compelling work to date.

This reissue is part of the Acoustic Sounds Series and showcases the exceptional talents of McGhee and Edwards alongside Phineas Newborn Jr. on piano, Ray Brown on bass, and Ed Thigpen on drums. Hawes' performance on the Ornette-penned 'Turnaround' stands out as a straight-ahead highlight on this exploratory album, although the other three are also standout works that offer plenty to get stuck into. This transmedia project includes a staged play that premiered at the Holland Festival back in June of this year plus two cinematic music videos, a documentary video, and an online game. The ancient firebird tale, passed down through spoken word over the generations, symbolises the modern world's quest for connection amidst ecological, psychological, and spiritual challenges. By blending Armenian traditional music with jazz improvisation, Tigran, who himself is one of today's most innovative jazz pianists, continues his artistic collaboration with filmmaker Ruben Van Leer to create unique musical experiences.

Review: Fat Albert Rotunda represents one of Herbie Hancock's earliest forays into jazz-funk and is centred around the music he composed for the Fat Albert cartoon show. Released between his landmark album Maiden Voyage in 1965 and the classic Head Hunters from 1973, it stands out in Hancock's catalogue - despite said catalogue being so packed with gems. The album features funky tracks like 'Fat Mama' and jazz-oriented tunes such as 'Tell Me A Bedtime Story', wih Hancock supported by a stellar sextet including Joe Henderson on tenor sax, Johnny Coles on trumpet and Buster Williams on bass. Although Hancock's work spans various developments in jazz, funk, and r&b, he always maintained a unique voice, and this is a great example of it at its most distinctive.

Review: Nobuo Tsukahara, known as Nobuo Hara, is a legendary Japanese saxophonist who gained fame in 1951 with his big band, the Sharp & Flats. Over their illustrious career, they recorded more than a hundred albums. Hozan Yamamoto, a revered shakuhachi (traditional Japanese flute) player, was honoured as a Living National Treasure in 2002. Their first collaboration was a live recording from the 1967 Newport Jazz Festival, leading to their seminal studio album, New Jazz in Japan, released in 1968. This album, now reissued for the first time since 1971, showcases the unique blend of Hara's tenor sax and Yamamoto's shakuhachi, underpinned by the powerful Sharp & Flats ensemble. The result is a compelling fusion of jazz and traditional Japanese music, creating a distinct and enoyable sound. Presented in gatefold packaging, this reissue allows a new generation to experience the innovative and harmonious interplay between these two master musicians.

Review: The Three Sounds, one of Blue Note's most productive acts, evolved significantly by 1970. Under the leadership of pianist Gene Harris, the trio welcomed bassist Henry Franklin and drummer Carl Burnett into its ranks, infusing their blues and gospel foundations with a funkier, more vibrant rhythm. This shift is brilliantly captured in Live at the 'It Club', a rousing live recording that highlights their transformation. The record demonstrates how the trio, especially through Burnett's drumming and Franklin's basslines, pushed their sound into funkier territories while maintaining their soulful hard-bop roots. The rhythm section's infectious groove drives the music, giving it a loose, swinging feel where the groove is paramount. Tracks like 'Funky Pullett' and 'Love for Sale' showcase this new dynamic, where the interplay between the trio adds layers of grit and soul to their performances. Live at the 'It Club' remains a thoroughly enjoyable listen with the trio's unique blend of soul-jazz with a fresh, funky twist proudly presented.

Review: Johnny Hartman's I Just Dropped By to Say Hello, now reissued on 180-gram vinyl via Verve By Request, is a testament to his exceptional vocal artistry. Known for his deep, velvety baritone, Hartman delivers a collection of intimate ballads with impeccable enunciation and emotional depth. Standouts include 'Wee Small Hours of the Morning' and 'Sleepin' Bee', where Hartman's voice is smooth, relaxed and rich, free from the harshness that can plague lesser pressings. Recorded by the legendary Rudy Van Gelder, this album benefits from his masterful engineering, with every nuance of Hartman's voice and the supporting ensemble sounding pristine. The stellar musicianship includes Hank and Elvin Jones on piano and drums, Milt Hinton on bass and guitarists Kenny Burrell and Jim Hall. Illinois Jacquet's tenor sax adds further texture to several tracks. Often overshadowed by Hartman's work with John Coltrane, this album stands on its own as a jazz vocal masterpiece. The warm, natural sound of this reissue makes it an essential addition to any collection, demonstrating the enduring magic of Hartman's voice and Van Gelder's brilliant production.

Review: When it comes to hunting the very of best library music cuts out there, De Wolfe's discography is likely the best place to start, and finish. The British music production company were the first to license such music exclusively for film and TV and thus single-handedly popularised the now DJ's favourite genre. Here on this reissue, Aussie producer, musician and double bassist Johnny Hawksworth (one of two famous library musician "hawks", only once removed from the perhaps more eminent Alan Hawkshaw), prizes open both falcon's eyes and auriculars: 'Bite Hard Breaks', the star, makes for an unfathomably cool piece for the playing of seductive games. Unsurprisingly, but with this fact not known to many, this record has been much sampled by hip-hop titans, from Beyonce to Drake to Jay Z to Madlib.

Review: Decca Records, a champion of British jazz and particularly the homegrown talent of the 50s, 60s and 70s, continues its exploration of those eras. Curated by Mark Baxter, this is the perfect entry point for those unfamiliar with the virtuoso saxophonist, flautist, vibraphonist and composer Hayes, gathering ten tracks originally recorded for the Fontana label between 1961 and 1969 and answering to the question "Where do I start with Tubby Hayes?" Hayes was a significant figure in British jazz, a multi-instrumentalist and composer whose work spanned various styles, from hard bop to modal jazz. This collection showcases the breadth of his talent, highlighting key moments from his prolific period with Fontana. It's a chance to hear Hayes at his peak, demonstrating his technical prowess and his distinctive musical voice. Here, seasoned jazz aficionados are offered a curated selection of familiar favorites, perhaps revealing new nuances with fresh ears. But its primary purpose is to introduce new listeners to Hayes's brilliance and by focusing on a specific era and label, the compilation offers a coherent taste of Hayes's evolution throughout the 60s

Review: Roland Haynes Jr. and his band Phenix may have only released one 45 in 1983, but their legacy extends far beyond that solitary record. Review: In many ways, this album by the Heavy Hitters delivers everything jazz enthusiasts crave: an all-star ensemble, blues-rooted improvisations and original compositions that enrich the modern jazz repertoire. This live recording captures the deep emotions and authentic feelings that make such performances truly special. It is full of electric solos and dense melodies, shuffling rhythms and "lightning in a bottle" moments where fresh nuances emerge with every listen. Recorded after a two-week tour, the album culminated in a memorable performance at Frankie's, one of the world's finest jazz clubs, and is well deserving of your ears.

Review: Hailing from Norway, Hedvig Mollestad is renowned for her ability to bridge the worlds of jazz and heavy rock with a fierce, improvisational spirit. The trio, which has been at the heart of her sound since its inception, is back with their latest offering after a four-year hiatus, following the release of Ding Dong. This time, there's a palpable sense of urgency and creative freedom. Tracks like 'Bees In The Bonnet' and 'Under The Velvet Sky' highlight their complex interplay, weaving intricate structures with fiery, riff-heavy moments. The trio's chemistry, cultivated over years of touring and writing together, has only deepened, with an infectious energy that resonates throughout the release. Mollestad's sharp, commanding guitar work remains a focal point, as she effortlessly fuses influences from jazz legends to the weighty riffs of metal pioneers.

Review: Finnish fusion five-piece the Heikki Sarmanto Quintet recorded and released their sole album, Counterbalance, way back in 1971. Brought together by bandleader and Rhodes electric piano wizard Heikki Sarmanto, the band burned brightly briefly before vanishing into obscurity. Svart Records has - wisely, given its cult status - decided to reissue the album, this time on translucent green vinyl and accompanied by extensive liner notes. It remains a unique and hugely enjoyable album that joins the dots between warm and largely laidback contemporary jazz, jazz-funk, more pastoral folk-jazz fusion, and more high-octane, spiritual jazz-inspired improvisations. It also boasts some genuinely life-affirming flute and guitar solos amongst the rubbery double bass, loose-limbed rhythms and Sarmanto's inspired keys-work.

Backed by the exceptional Oscar Peterson Trioifeaturing Ed Thigpen on drums and Ray Brown on bassiHenderson more than holds his own. His rich, expressive voice brings new depth to classics like 'All or Nothing at All' and 'You Are My Sunshine' which font his unique style and vast emotional range. Rather than being overshadowed by his legendary accompanists, Henderson rises to the occasion which helps make this a standout gem in vocal jazz.

Review: Joe Henderson's synergistic 1973 sax record first came to Milestone Records amid the musician's long and storied fusion-crossing-into-free-jazz period. With a Warholian front cover and a punch-packing cast of talents behind him - from Larry Willis to James Blood Ulmer to Dave Holland to Jack DeJohnette - this is indeed a milestone, charging terminals of funk, blue jazz and Afrobeat, and crossing into both the spiritual and the atonal. Mid-record high-point 'Song For Sinners' almost certainly takes after Sun Ra with its trembling saxophones above a distended groove, while 'Turned Around' is a lot freer and easygoing and yet far more determined in the rhythm section.

Review: The fourth and perhaps best known album by Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass marked a shift from their earlier, Mexican-inspired sound to pop-friendly Latin jazz-lounge instrumental covers. Its upbeat sound appealed to a wide audience, from young adults embracing 1960s pop culture to older listeners drawn to easy listening. Heavy radio play and mainstream exposure helped it define the Ameriachi style; hits 'A Taste Of Honey' and the sultry 'Love Potion No. 9' inaugurated it as an erotic touchstone, also partly thanks to its provocative album cover. Its chart performance was so enduring that its total stats would only end up matched by The Beatles, Prince, and Taylor Swift much later down the line.

Review: Jutta Hipp's At The Hickory House Vol. 1 is a window into a world where jazz piano can swing without fanfare and charm without overstatement. Recorded live in 1956, it captures a moment in time where Hipp, a little-known German transplant to New York, performed with bassist Peter Ind and drummer Ed Thigpen in a tight, energetic trio format. Hipp's lightly-swinging style moves effortlessly through bebop themes and standards, showing a deftness that feels unforced and natural, with just the right amount of flair. This Blue Note Classic Vinyl Edition is about the purity of soundimono, all-analogue, and mastered from the original tapes by Kevin Gray. The 180g pressing at Optimal guarantees that every note rings out with clarity, allowing listeners to experience Hipp's playing as it was meant to be heard. It's as close to stepping into that intimate club setting as you'll get without a time machine. There's a reason this release still resonates: the understated brilliance of a pianist who never quite got the limelight she deserved, but certainly made a lasting impression on those who tuned in.

Review: Billie Holiday's late career 1958 LP through Verve Records caught the legendary singer at a relatively intimate stage: substance abuse compounded financial difficulties, which imposed a toll on her already turbulent personal life, and Holiday's once-pure, all-powerful voice was showing signs of wear. A title like All Or Nothing At All would certainly seem to express the captive intensity of an industry that "breaks" artists in more ways than one, and despite the mixed reviews on release, this small combo-backed record is of one artist's broken but still functioning sensitivity. With Harry "Sweets" Edison and saxophonist Ben Webster, Holiday croons over 12 tracks, recorded over five sessions in 1956 and 1957, showcasing a more restrained vocal style that pierces clearly through and despite pharyngeal ills.

Review: The Commodore Master Takes provides an essential snapshot of Billie Holiday's artistry during a pivotal moment in her career. Spanning recordings from 1939 to 1944, these sessions are often regarded as some of Holiday's most powerful and evocative work. The album opens with the haunting 'Strange Fruit,' a stark and fearless protest against racial violence, which was too controversial for other labels but found its rightful place here. Holiday's delivery is chilling, a perfect match for the song's bleak subject matter. Other standouts include 'I'll Be Seeing You,' where her emotive phrasing turns the track into a melancholic ode, and 'As Time Goes By,' a classic tune that, in her hands, takes on an almost timeless quality. These recordings highlight not just Holiday's unique voice but her ability to convey deep emotion and narrative, cementing her legacy as one of jazz's most influential figures. The Commodore Master Takes is a treasure trove for any fan of classic jazz, offering an intimate look at Holiday at her peak.

Review: Eye of the Universe, recorded by Finnish saxophonist Markus Holkko at Studio Pelto, is a sophisticated blend of jazz traditions and experimental sounds. This album sees Holkko revisiting his roots while innovating with a mix of straight, Latin, and spiritual jazz, infused with elements of west coast cool and psychedelic touches. The core ensemble, featuring Juuso Rinta on double bass, Samuli Rautiainen on electric piano, and Teemu Mustonen on drums and percussion, lays down a foundation of organic, acoustic jazz. Additional layers by Teemu Akerblom on electric guitar and sitar, alongside Holkko's analog synthesisers, enrich the album's texture. Primarily instrumental, the album also includes Holkko's wordless vocals, adding an ethereal quality to tracks like 'Funky Ranking'. Eye of the Universe encapsulates a true jazz feel with its deep, layered sounds and a nod to musical authenticity, promising to be a compelling listen for those intrigued by the evolution of jazz and its fusion with other musical forms.

Review: New Orleans brass band fixture The Hot 8 Brass Band unveil their latest record, in memory of Bennie Pete aka. "Big Tuba", the late co-founder and sousaphone player of the band. Having passed away on September 6, 2021, Pete was described as a "constant galvanising force", and this galvanic power is heard on full display here, as the top brass of the band are heard to collierly collude with many a New Orleands folk and hip-hop legend. Chief among the Hot 8's best characteristics are their incorporation of New Orleans bounce music (a local variation of hip-hop) into their brass-driven tracks and live shows; the sense of bustle, bombast and crowd commotion is heard here, reflecting the extent of the lives touched by Pete.

Review: Released in 1971, this experimental jazz album stands as a defining moment in Noah Howard's career, capturing his vision of music as a "sound painting." A blend of free jazz and Dutch improvisation, the album features Howard's alto saxophone alongside an eclectic mix of musicians, including Misha Mengelberg (piano), Han Bennink (drums) and Earl Freeman (bass). The album opens with a disorienting space duet between conga and electric guitar, setting the stage for a primal and intense exploration of sound. As the musicians join in, the music evolves into a fierce clash of American free jazz and European avant-garde, where rhythmic energy and dissonant piano clusters intersect with Howard's lyrical yet passionate saxophone lines. The album's complex interplay of structure and improvisation reveals Howard's quest for originality, influenced by jazz legends but never imitative. It showcases his belief in the spiritual essence of jazz, channeling cosmic energy through his compositions. Despite challenges, such as guitarist Jaap Schoonhoven's discomfort, the session results in a high-energy fusion, full of vivid contrasts and sonic exploration. This work remains a powerful, enigmatic piece in Howard's catalogue, illustrating his distinct, boundary-pushing approach to jazz.

Review: Freddie Hubbard's final release for Impulse was The Body & The Soul, an album he released in 1963 and that features both an all-star septet and a string orchestra. Hubbard originals feature and showcase notable musicians such as Curtis Fuller on trombone, Wayne Shorter on tenor saxophone, Eric Dolphy on alto saxophone, Cedar Walton on piano, Reggie Workman on bass and Louis Hayes on drums. This release stands out in Hubbard's fine discography and highlights Wayne Shorter's exceptional arranging skills, all now pressed up to 180-gram vinyl at Third Man in Detroit.

Review: Jazz vocalist Helen Humes is not as well known as some of her peers, but that isn't for lack of talent. This was her second album on Contemporary Records and it came in 1961 as a fully realised exhibition of her vocal versatility and charm. Conducted by Marty Paich, the record features an all-star lineup including saxman Art Pepper, bass from Leroy Vinnegar, drums by Shelly Manne and guitar from Barney Kessel. This reissue has been meticulously crafted with AAA lacquers cut from the original master tapes by Bernie Grundman so is an authentic representation of the original magical sound with unmatched fidelity.
