Sentimental Moments (10:58)

Oh Yeah T'blessed (20:51)
Review: Building on the momentum of their debut album, the legendary musicians and 577 mainstays return with Shine Hear, Vol. 2, a stunning continuation of their avant-garde exploration. Saxophonist and multi-instrumentalist Daniel Carter, pianist Leo Genovese, bassist William Parkeriwho also contributes on Gralla and Shakuhachiiand drummer and vocalist Francisco Mela, reunite to create another cosmic journey through sound. This second volume maintains the same spirit of improvisational brilliance while pushing the boundaries even further. Drawing from classic jazz structures, the ensemble weaves in modern experimentalism and a broad palette of instruments, resulting in an album that feels both timeless and innovative. The tracks and the album title are inspired by a new poem written by Carter, reflecting the transience and ceaseless motion of modern life, much like the city of New York, where all the musicians are based. This collaboration has unique magic can emerge when these legendary artists come together. Their interplay blends elegant, traditional jazz with daring, avant-garde arrangements. Shine Hear, Vol. 2 stands as a powerful and innovative work, affirming the quartet's ability to continually reinvent themselves while honouring the roots of jazz.

One Way - "Don't Fight The Feeling" (4:23)
Windjammer - "I Thought It Was You" (4:42)
Review: The classic 1982 funk anthem 'Don't Fight The Feeling' by American r&b and funk band One Way gets a fine 12" pressing here, which means it can be played nice and loud. Singer Al Hudson leads the way with his buttery vocal, while a stepping and broken rhythm with lovely dry claps and w sloppy synth squeal make for a pretty unique sound given when this was first recorded. On the flip side, Windjammer's 'I Thought It Was You' offers a more mellow, melodic contrast full of the band's signature blend of r&b and jazz with cooing, heart-melting vocals and a nice stepping rhythm that lovers of UK street soul will surely be drawn to.

Review: Osaka-incubated instrumental jazz and hip-hop group Wa Yo Set take their next big stride with a sure-to-be infamous new cover of a Notorious B.I.G. classic, 'Mo Money Mo Problems'. With Biggie having spat near infinite wisdom on this playful pop diversion - "it's like the more money we come across the more problems we see" - this killer 7" version takes heed, limiting its quantity to fewer than 1000, in case demand outstrips supply and concerns of fan rapaciousness bubble over. With a superb remix from DJ Koco on the B.

Review: Osaka-based jazz-funk band Wa Yo Set is dropping this new 7" single as a way of offering fans a sneak peek of another new album project they have coming up this year. The A-side features a jazzy, acoustic, and danceable instrumental cover of MISIA's 'Tsutsumikomu Youni,' which has been skilfully reimagined in the band's signature style. On the B-side, the original track 'R308' delivers a breezy summer vibe and closes out a tasty release that showcases the band's ever-evolving sound. It has more than got us interested in hearing the full length that is soon to come.

Airport Love Theme (2:43)
Afro Sam (2:59)
Review: Waldir Calmon's 'Airport Love Theme' has that special appeal that makes it a true gem. Sampled by Madlib on the Madvillain album track 'Curls', this lounge classic from Calmon's 1970 Waldir Calmon E Seus Multisons LP on Copacabana exudes nostalgic charm. Despite its unassuming cover, 'Airport Love Theme' delivers a dreamy, feel-good vibe that could soundtrack a perfect world. Afro Son, from the same album, shifts towards a Brazilian-rooted, cinematic groove, reminiscent of Jean Jacques Perrey's E.V.A.. Calmon, a Brazilian music fixture from the 50s to the 80s, who collaborated with legends like Tom Jobim and Joao Gilberto and left a unique musical legacy that lives on in these timeless tracks.

Straight Shooter (3:02)
Island Travel (3:23)
Review: The Winston Brothers return with two fresh cuts on their latest 7" single, marking their first release since 2022's Drift. On the A-side, 'Straight Shooter' lives up to its name, a raw funk jam that could kickstart a b-boy battle. Funky guitar riffs, punchy horns, and tight drum breaks propel the track forward, its energy intense and unfiltered, thanks to an all-analogue recording on a Fostex 8-track. On the flip, 'Island Travel' takes a more laid-back turn. It's a hypnotic Afrobeat number, with dreamy flute work from Kimo Eiserbeck, blending ethno-funk with spiritual jazz vibes. It's cinematic, atmospheric, and offers a perfect contrast to the edgier A-side.

Island Travel (3:23)
Review: The Winston Brothers make a triumphant return with two new tracks, this time pressed on striking blue vinyl, following the success of their 2022 debut Drift. The A-side, 'Straight Shooter,' is a full-throttle funk workout, packed with gritty guitar licks, sharp horns, and head-nodding drum breaks. With a raw edge and plenty of analogue warmth from the Fostex 8-track recording, it's a b-boy anthem in waiting. On the B-side, 'Island Travel' shifts gears into a more laid-back groove. A smooth afrobeat-inspired journey, it blends spiritual jazz and ethno-funk, with Kimo Eiserbeck's serene flute solo gliding over the hypnotic rhythms. Perfectly balancing the A-side's intensity, this one's for the heads looking to kick back and vibe out.

Harpsichord Shuffle (3:55)
Review: Side-1 kicks off with a raw and funky garage band jam that perfectly captures the spirit of 1967. With its dynamic energy, the track blends elements of jazz, rock, funk and blues, creating an exciting, soul-infused experience. The rhythm section drives the track with relentless energy, while the soulful melodies and infectious groove make it a standout piece. The mix of surf rock and mod influences gives it a timeless, gritty edge that resonates with both vintage and modern listeners. Side-2 takes a more experimental turn with a unique jam laden with saxophone and rich instrumental textures. The track's experimental nature is underscored by its unconventional structure, utilizing the harpsichord to create a distinctive, jazzy vibe. The saxophone adds a layer of depth, intertwining with the rhythm to produce a mood that's both introspective and lively. This track offers a refreshing, avant-garde twist that contrasts beautifully with the raw energy of the opening side.

Review: The debut recording from The Ancients, an intergenerational trio featuring Isaiah Collier, William Hooker and William Parker initially formed to play Milford Graves' Mind Body Deal exhibition at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles. This double LP captures the raw energy and improvisational brilliance of their live performances, showcasing the enduring legacy of free jazz. Collier's tenor saxophone soars and wails, drawing on influences from John Coltrane to Charles Gayle, while grounding his explorations in a deep understanding of structure and form. Hooker's drumming is a force of nature, a whirlwind of polyrhythms and explosive energy that pushes the music to its limits. And Parker, a true legend of the avant-garde, anchors the music with his virtuosic bass playing, creating a foundation for the trio's improvisational flights. The music is both a celebration of the rich history of free jazz and a bold exploration of new sonic territory. The Ancients tap into the spirit of their predecessors, channeling the energy of the Cecil Taylor Unit and the Ornette Coleman Trio, while forging their own unique path, the power of collective improvisation looming large throughout.

Review: Tribe 2000 is a powerful celebration of Phil Ranelin's prolific career, featuring the Tribe Records founders, Ranelin on trombone and Wendell Harrison on saxophone. Recorded in 2000, this album brings together the core of the influential Detroit label, as Harrison sought to reconnect with Ranelin while incorporating a talented ensemble of seasoned musicians to enrich the arrangements. Four of the five compositions are penned by Ranelin, showcasing the innovative spirit that characterised Tribe. Wendell Harrison, known for his self-directed approach to music, co-founded the legendary Tribe label in the 1970s and established Rebirth Inc., a nonprofit dedicated to jazz performance and education. His collaborations with notable artists like pianist Geri Allen and saxophonist James Carter underscore his significant impact on the jazz community. Born in Indianapolis, Ranelin's early influences shaped his journey through Detroit's jazz scene before he moved to Los Angeles, where he continued to thrive alongside luminaries like Freddie Hubbard. Review: The newly unearthed Mal Waldron Trio 1970 live recording, officially released with the permission of the Waldron Estate and INA, captures an important moment in the pianist's career resurgence. Recorded at Paris' Palais d'Orsay Hotel during the International Sound Festival and aired on the "Jazz Vivant" radio show, this performance highlights Waldron's revitalised artistry after years of personal struggle. Backed by Christian Vander on drums and Jean-Francois Catoire on bass, the trio delivers a riveting set that exemplifies their deep cohesion. The set opens with 'Rat Now', showcasing Waldron's signature style, with his left hand's rhythmic foundation contrasting against his right hand's sharp, controlled improvisations. Vander's dynamic drumming adds a free-flowing energy to the piece, evoking Monk's influence on Waldron. 'Champs Elysees' follows, blending bluesy melodies with intricate interplay from the trio, while 'Rock My Soul' races forward with vibrant exchanges, particularly between Waldron's forceful left hand and Vander's energetic percussion. The set closes with 'Mount Fujiyama', a serene yet deeply rooted composition inspired by Waldron's visit to Japan. This rare recording is a testament to Waldron's rebirth as an artist and the trio's extraordinary synergy.

Review: The search for The Quest is finally over. This rare album, a true first pressing with the Abbey ring and deep grooves, is now on the shelf and sounding fantastic. It ranks among the top jazz albums, alongside Basra and Far Cry. The Quest is a stunning showcase of soul, musicianship, and composition, with all tunes penned by Mal Waldron, who is a master of sparse, dark, delicate beauty on the piano. Featuring Eric Dolphy on alto and clarinet, Booker Ervin on tenor, Ron Carter on cello, Joe Benjamin on double bass, and Charlie Persip on drums, the ensemble is top-notch. Standout tracks include the mellow and reflective 'Warm Canto' and the energetic 'Status Seeking,' Every tune is unique, making it an album worth revisiting. This reissue rightly restores leadership to Waldron, and with the support of Benjamin and Persip, the complex music, bridging hard bop and avant-garde, is beautifully interpreted. Highly recommended.

Review: Ben Webster's See You at the Fair stands as a triumphant farewell to his American recording career before moving to Europe, where his genius would be more appreciated. At the time, Webster was still at the height of his powers, his signature tone both rich and velvety, with an emotional depth that few could match. His interpretation of ballads like 'Someone to Watch Over Me' and 'Over the Rainbow' is breathtaking, as he weaves through these standards with unmatched grace and tenderness, making them definitive versions. The album features a stellar quartet, including post-bop greats Hank Jones on piano and Richard Davis on bass. The opener, 'See You at the Fair', sets an exciting tone with its upbeat blues, showcasing Webster's growling intensity alongside Jones' inventive piano work. On slower tracks like 'Stardust' and Ellington's 'In a Mellow Tone', Webster's lyrical playing creates an intimate, timeless atmosphere, effortlessly capturing the listener's heart. Roger Kellaway, who steps in on the second half of the album, adds a surprising yet delightful twist by playing the harpsichord on a few tracks, including the lively 'Lullaby of Broadway'. What could have been kitschy instead brings a quirky charm, blending seamlessly with Webster's swing. See You at the Fair is a masterclass in tenor saxophone, filled with heartfelt performances that highlight Webster's unique ability to express both joy and melancholy. It's an essential listen, capturing the spirit of a saxophone giant who remains a singular voice in jazz history.

Review: Angel Song, originally released in 1997, is a landmark jazz album that has stood the test of time. The quartet session, led by the legendary Kenny Wheeler and featuring Lee Konitz, Dave Holland, and Bill Frisell, is a masterpiece of tranquil, chamber-like jazz. Wheeler's compositions are hauntingly lyrical, providing the perfect framework for the improvisational brilliance of the ensemble. Konitz's alto saxophone weaves effortlessly with Wheeler's flugelhorn and trumpet, creating expressive and melodic dialogues. Dave Holland's bass provides a solid foundation, allowing Bill Frisell's guitar to soar with harmonically rich improvisations. The absence of a drummer adds to the intimate and introspective nature of the music, allowing each musician to shine in their own right. The vinyl release of Angel Song as part of the Luminessence series is a welcome addition to any jazz lover's collection. It's a timeless album that features four master musicians at the height of their powers.

Review: German guitarist and bandleader JJ Whitefield, known for his authentic, timeless sound, delves into 'spiritual jazz' on his latest album, The Infinity Of Nothingness. With a career spanning over three decades, Whitefield's journey began in the early 90s with Poets Of Rhythm, pioneers of the Deep Funk scene. Since then, he has explored various musical styles, including funk with Karl Hector and Ethiopian Jazz, West African highlife, Kraut-rock, and ambient music under his Rodinia moniker. The Infinity Of Nothingness is a set of mature, meditative orchestrations, drawing inspiration from Sun Ra and Pharoah Sanders without becoming mere tributes. The album weaves subtle elements of hip-hop, library music, and avant-garde into its sound, creating a unified, trance-like feel. From the sparse opener 'Nothingness' to the three-part 'Infinity Suite' - 'Time', 'Space' and 'Energy' - the album reflects Whitefield's exceptional ability to craft music that resonates deeply with its influences while standing the test of time. As with his early work, Whitefield's latest project continues to set a high standard in musical exploration.

Review: Over three decades of musical exploration and innovation have cemented German guitarist and bandleader JJ Whitefield as a stalwart in the realm of authentic, timeless music. As a founding member of the Poets Of Rhythm in the early 90s, Whitefield pioneered a hard-edged take on 70s street funk, setting the stage for the Deep Funk scene to come. His subsequent ventures under various pseudonyms, including Karl Hector, showcased his versatility and eclectic influences, drawing from Ethiopian Jazz, West African funk, Kraut-rock, and ambient sounds. With his latest album, The Infinity Of Nothingness, Whitefield delves into the astral realms of spiritual jazz, paying homage to influences like Sun Ra and Pharoah Sanders while forging his own path. The album's mature, delicate orchestrations evoke a trance-like atmosphere, with subtle accents of hip-hop, library and avant garde seamlessly integrated. Review: Acclaimed saxophonist and composer Immanuel Wilkins's third studio album, Blues Blood, is quite possibly his most expansive yet. Co-produced by Meshell Ndegeocello, the meditative project features his quartet with Micah Thomas on piano, Rick Rosato on bass and Kweku Sumbry on drums alongside vocalists Ganavya, June McDoom, and Yaw Agyeman. Special guests include vocalist Cecile McLorin Salvant, guitarist Marvin Sewell, and drummer Chris Dave. Blues Blood explores ancestral legacies and bloodlines, and the album marks the first time Wilkins has incorporated vocalists into his work with each voice contributing a unique dimension to themes of heritage and connection. That helps to make this a deeply reflective and resonant album.

Review: Uncle Joe's Spirit House by William Parker is a standout soul-jazz organ quartet album, echoing the vibes of early-mid 60s sessions while revitalized by Parker's masterful compositions. Featuring Darryl Foster, Cooper-Moore, and Gerald Cleaver, the album is a sheer joy from start to finish. Produced by Parker for his Centering Records, the album is a heartfelt dedication to his Aunt Carrie Lee and Uncle Joe, celebrating their 65th wedding anniversary. Seven tracks were penned in December 2009, with 'Ennio's Tag' and 'Oasis' seamlessly fitting into the January 2010 recording session. Renowned for his role in the New York avant-jazz scene, Parker delivers a remarkably accessible album. The album is full of spiritual depth, social justice themes, and family dedication. Now reissued on vinyl for audiophiles, Uncle Joe's Spirit House"offers emotional, hard-grooving, and occasionally abstract music that bridges the past and future with raw, bluesy undertones. An essential listen for jazz enthusiasts.

Review: American jazz drummer Tony Williams rose to acclaim as a member of Miles Davis' so-called 'Second Great Quintet'. He later went on to pioneer jazz fusion with the group and formed his own outfit, the Tony Williams Lifetime. In 1986 he released 'Civilization', which marked a triumphant return to Blue Note and a great window into his visionary approach to jazz. Leading a stellar acoustic quintet with Wallace Roney (trumpet), Billy Pierce (sax), Mulgrew Miller (piano) and Charnett Moffett (bass), Williams served up a dynamic set of original compositions that pulse with intensity and technical brilliance, as well as emotional depth, while taking post-bop tradition into new relays. Each player brings sharp improvisational insight, but it's Williams' explosive yet precise drumming that anchors the session.

Review: Often touted as a "masterpiece of jazz-funk live albums," The Wooden Glass's 1972 live recording proves it's more than just hype. Featuring vibraphonist Billy Wooten who previously played with Grant Green, this record was recorded at Indianapolis' The 19th Hole club and captures the essence of fusion driven by soulful 60s influences. Wooten's gentle melodies contrast with the gritty, distorted sound of Harold Cardwell's powerful drumming and Emmanuel Riggins' Hammond organ while the energetic performance from the band, including guitarist William Roach, creates a tapestry of intensity and dreamlike vibes. It's raw, electrifying, high-energy jazz.
