Elizabeth Cardoso - "Eu Bebo Sim" (3:37)
Elza Soares - "Deixa A Nega Gingar" (2:19)
Review: Brazil 45s hit the quarter century in their run and show no sign of stopping. It's an all-girl affair on this one as two hugely popular and prolific singers take a spin under Mr Bongo's spotlight. Elizabeth (often known as Elizete) lays down a steamy samba flavour that gets raunchier as the track develops. Elza, meanwhile, gets busy on a Bossa tip as a carnival of percussion and horns go toe-to-toe with her sharp, sexy staccato vocals. Powerful.

Sunshine (3:43)
Review: Missouri man Early Turner is the latest to be celebrated on the always sharp Tramp label. This was his first record in the late 70s, right on the cusp between trad funk and the emergent sound of boogie. 'S'port City Rock' is a sweat-inducing dancefloor cut with a deadly on-the-one groove and some serious bass, letting just a few choice synth zaps to sneak into the mix but keeping things primarily organic. 'Sunshine' is a softer soul number - the perfect sentimental foil to the serious get-down on the A-side.

Review: BGP's new 7" vinyl series, kicks off with a bang featuring Charles Earland's classic tracks 'Murilley' and 'Leaving This Planet.' "Leaving This Planet,' the title track from Earland's acclaimed 1974 album, was a staple at New York dance clubs like The Loft in the 70s. Meanwhile, 'Murilley' is a groovy organ-led vocal number that became a favorite among jazz dancers at iconic venues like the Wag Club and Dingwalls in the 80s. This release promises to deliver the full-length experience of these jazz funk gems, ensuring that fans can enjoy Earland's infectious rhythms and soulful sounds in all their glory.

Pinball 6 (2:46)
Review: Galaxy Sound Co is back with some subtle but sublime new edits, and this time Mr Thelonious turns his hand to 'Soul Town' by The Motherhood from their psychedelic 1969 album I Feel So Free. If you can find this one n 45rpm anywhere it will likely have a high three-figure price tag and this edit is a great alternative with big horn energy and rousing soul-funk grooves. On the flip is 'Pinball 6' which was originally by The Pointer Sisters and made famous for its appearance on Sesame Street in the 1970s when it was used as backing music to the famous segment that taught children how to count. It's an electric bit of jazz-funk that still sounds most excellent.

Elis Regina - "Ye Me Le" (2:19)
Senay - "En Buyuk Sansin Yasiyor Olman" (3:39)
Review: The Brazil 45 series from Mr Bongo bursts through the picture with yet another rocking 7" fire starter by two vintage pop greats - we have to say, their format simply works. First up is Elis Regina, a Brazilian singer who released a countless pop records back in the '60s, and "Ye Me Le" is a soft, seductive Brazilian soul warmer complete with blasting trumpets and that inimitable South American percussion swagger. Turkey's Senay features on the flip with "En Buyuk Sansin Yasiyor Olman", an incandescent lover's ballad that makes a welcome change to the more widely heard Turkish psych sound of the '70s.

It Only Takes A Little Common Sense (2:24)
Review: Thanks to the year being 2025, te jazz age of the 1920s is being centennially anniversaried the world over. But when recorded music took the world by storm from the 50s onwards, it was only a matter of time before such starlets Lu Elliott would make latent but no less powerful waves in the same early jazz sound, except this time around, the sonic vestiges of the time were preservable. Elliott, a jazz/blues singer and recording artist, was a onetime BB King and Duke Ellington posse member, having found her lungs playing in a band known as The Cubanaires before bronchi-ating out into mid '60s solo stardom with tunes such as 'Speaking Of Happiness'.

Ti (2:47)
Review: Germany's Legere Recordings is the home of authentic, modern funk and jazz. For this tasty 7" outing, Welsh musician Carwyn Ellis and Rio 18 link with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales for an alarmingly exotic tune given its country of origin. This is samba drenched in sun, with all the authentic drums, soaring strings and percussive details you would expect next to some great lead flute work. That's the case on 'Ola' anyway, the more upbeat party starter, while 'Ti' is a sentimental and slow-motion ballad for weepy moments.

Review: Long time jazz wayfarer Nick Woodmansey emerges from the shadows once more with a limited 300-only 45. Two sides shrouded with his signature eastern haze, "Ominous Shanti" sees the horns gradually melting in the heat while the intricately laced percussion holds the groove together. "Black Enchantment" lollops with more of a new soul step as lilting horns rise over a bubblesome strolling bassline before switching into a deliciously cosmic finale. Grab it while it's hot.

Review: Although he began his career as an 11-year-old prodigy back in 1990, it took Brazilian multi-instrumentalist and producer Erik Escobar until 2020 to deliver a debut solo album. Last year he joined Ten Lovers Music to deliver a follow-up - a full-length collaboration with Stretto - and here returns to the label with his latest project: a 'new Brazilian trio' that draws inspiration from a combination of jazz-fusion, samba-jazz, jazz-funk and spiritual jazz. It's a brilliant EP all told, with highlights including the high-octane brilliance of 'Samba For Petrucciani', the carnival-ready excellence of the Azymuth-esque 'Arcanjo Miguel', the jazz guitar sporting laidback vibes of 'Change of Plan' and the colourful jazz-funk of 'Maracana Funk'.

Review: Two outstanding Brazilian funk cuts straight out of 1971: "Esperar Pra Ver" is a laden with an immense orchestrated groove that's triggered by a lean, unforgettable bass guitar riff that matches Evinha's purring, slinky allure. Elza Soares - "Mas Que Nada" (2:25)
Elizabeth - "Vou Falar-Lhe Francamente" (2:39)
Review: The 12th release on Mr. Bongo's signature 45s series saw a reissue of two foundational releases in Brazil's modern popular music category; now the record hears a second round, fresh again off the master metal lacquer. On the A, we hear Brazilian samba luminary Elza Soares covering Jorge Ben's classic 'Mas Que Nada' - albeit with a hoarser vocal tone, such was Soares' signature voice, one which only led to a whopping 34-album career. B-sider Elizabeth, by contrast, upholds a mystery; the artist was nicknamed "Gatinha do Mato" ("jungle cat"), and recorded 'Vou Falar-Lhe Francamente' at some indeterminate point in 1960s Sao Paolo, when and where Brazilian local styles blended with funk and rock.

Out Of This World (23:36)

Tapestry In Sound (6:05)
Review: Still hot off the nostalgic plate, new label Climbing The Mountain brings forth a legendary live album by the late John Coltrane. On September 30, 1965, aided by a ragtag band of jazz visionaries including Pharoah Sanders, pianist McCoy Tyner, and post-bop drummer Elvin Jones, the undisputed king of the blues succeeded in shutting down The Penthouse, a Seattle jazz club that had previously seen no limelight. This version is restored from the original recordings and now settles on light blue vinyl record. Prepare for a three-suite miracle: 'Out Of This World' is a curious, neo-noir piece suitable for any by-the-book nocturnal crime drama tapering off into more avant-garde endings. Meanwhile, 'Body And Soul' operates in diatonic, swung spiritualism, and 'Tapestry In Sound', a Penthouse exclusive, hears a stunning double bass solo from Coltranean entourage member, Jimmy Garrison.

Review: Eden Ahbez was a hippo and a dropout way before that sort of lifestyle became trendy in the sixties. He was a poet and composer who wrote 'Nature Boy,' a huge hit for Nat King Cole in 1948. His album Eden's Island from 1960 perfectly captures the world of exotic music from a unique perspective. It pairs wild jungle atmospheres and dreamy paradise beach islands with music rooted in folk traditions and relaxed, easy listening grooves with transcendent vocals, his own trademark wood flute and easy listening swing grooves. It is a movie for the mind. Psychedelic music before that was a thing.

Review: Emehoy Tsege Mariam Gebru is perhaps an unlikely jazz hero: an Ethiopian nun who became renowned in her home country for the quality of her piano playing. In fact, her first album - the holy grail Spielt Eigene Kompositionen - was recorded and released in Germany during the 1960s via the patronage of the country's emperor, Haile Sellasie. Here the album appears on CD for the first time. It's worth picking up, not least for the quality of her compositions and playing, which mix Ethiopian and Western musical modes and subtly reference the much better-known and widely celebrated works of Erik Satie. A genuine gem that's finally available in crystal-clear audio at an affordable price.

Review: Emahoy Tsege Mariam Gebru remains one of 20th century jazz's most likely heroes: an Ethiopian nun whose piano-playing talent was spotted and encouraged by Emperor Haile Salassie, who paid for her to study and record her earliest albums in Germany. This retrospective draws on a handful of rare albums (and even rarer archive recordings) Gebru committed to tape in the 1960s. It provides an excellent introduction to her distinctive style, which mixed Ethiopian and Western musical modes, with nods aplenty to her musical inspiration, the great Erik Satie. Highlights are plentiful, with our picks including the fresh and breezy 'Mother's Song', the epic and undulating 'Song of the Sea', and the inspired 'Song of Abayi'.

Review: Emahoy Tsegue-Maryam Guebrou's Jerusalem album arrived on vinyl last month and now it also comes on CD, which is a good thing because this is music that needs to be as universally available as possible. Emahoy was an Ethiopian nun known for her piano playing and musical compositions as well as for singing for Haile Selassie and so is a rather unlikely jazz heroine. After establishing her talents she became something of a recluse though spent time perfecting her blues singing style. The money made from selling her music has been used to fund orphaned children in Ethiopia and this Jerusalem album is the first archival release of her music since 2006.

Review: Founded in 1981, the Ethnic Heritage Ensemble has been responsible for some sublime albums over the years. They built their reputation via a swathe of sets dedicated to free jazz and inspired improvisational workouts, but "Be Known: Ancient/Future/Music" is a little more structured and polished, with clear influences from spiritual jazz and African music. It's a blend that consistently produces impressive results, from the chant-along soul-jazz spirituality of "Be Known" and loose-limbed madness of "Blew It", to the tribal drums and soulful vocals of "Wish I Knew" and the slow-burn vibes of simmering late night cut "Ntozake".

Review: It's not often that a previous unheard recording of a giant of jazz is found loitering in the depths of someone's personal collection, but that's the case here. These recordings of legendary jazz pianist Bill Evans, laid to high-quality tape in 1964, were discovered last year in the personal archive of jazz musician Ole Matthiessen. Now fully mastered, it's a genuine unheard "Holy grail" - a set of recordings that show the versatility and quality of Evans' playing. Basically, it's a fantastic collection of piano jazz numbers, with Evans either playing solo, or accompanied by little more than a drummer and a double bassist. If you love jazz, you need this in your life.

The latest comes from Ezra Collective, which finally delivers its' debut album following a string of inspired live performances and a handful of must-have singles. Kicking off with a breezy chunk of hip-hop-jazz, "You Can't Steal My Joy" sees the hyped five-piece confidently bounce between intense, spiraling epics ("Why You Mad?"), reggae-influenced aural sunshine ("Red Whine"), polyrhythmic Afro-jazz ("Quest For Coin"), bespoke soul (Jorja Smith hook-up "Reason In Disguise"), live boom-bap hip-hop (Loyle Carner collaboration "What Am I To Do"), bustling Afro-Cuban jazz ("Chris & Jane"), picturesque piano pieces ("Philosopher II") and much more besides. He wrote some esteemed scores such as The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, Summer of '42 and The Thomas Crown Affair and so had some major label finds in high places Using those contacts, he called upon a frankly astonishing array of talent to help him record his own unique versions of 11 jazz standards including Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Bill Evans, Herbie Mann, Donald Byrd and more. This is a proper reissue which has been freshly re-mastered with exquisite results. The the meticulously recreated outer sleeve comes as a gatefold and heightens the whole package.

Review: Following years of notable collaborations with some of jazz's leading voices, saxophonist and band leader Walter Smith III finally broke through in 2023 via a first headlining album for Blue Note. On his return to the label, Three of Us Are From Houston and Reuben is Not, Smith pays tribute to the Texan city of his birth in the company of Jason Moran (piano), Eric Harland (drums) and Reuben Smith (bass). It's a pleasingly breezy, positive and expertly crafted affair, with the quartet running through a series of ear-catching Smith compositions and a radical (and rather good) interpretation of an old Sam Rivers number. A wholehearted tribute to the rarely discussed cultural richness and diversity of Smith's home city.
