  1. Kraksa (13:11)
  2. Svantetic (10:45)
Review: Those who pay attention to these things know that Poland's EABS (short for Electro Acoustic Beat Sessions) are one of the hottest jazz combos in the world right now - an accolade earned not only via their incredible playing, but also their willingness to fuse elements of classic Polish and American jazz with hip-hop, soul and funk influences. Here, the fast-rising septet joins forces with 22a regular Tenderlonious (who provides flute and soprano sax solos) for two epic workouts. A-side "Kraksa" is something of an epic; an ever-changing 13-minute jazz journey that brilliantly switches from floor-rocking goodness to horizontal bliss midway through. "Svantetic", meanwhile, wraps fuzzy rock guitars and hammered-out piano riffs around a sweaty groove that just grows in intensity throughout.

  2. My Love (4:32)
Review: Absolute gold from Earth Wind & Fire that was only ever included as filler track on their 1977 All N All album, it's been a staple sample across house and hip-hop ever since, utilised creatively by everyone from Tribe Called Quest and Danny Krivit. Previously only 80 seconds long, Fryer has managed to unearth a previously unreleased extended version that really digs into those honeyed harmonies. "My Love" takes us four years forward to their 13th album Raise! where the musical emphasis has developed from all-out vocal soul to a more restrained rare groove feel. One per customer, AOTN aren't messing around on this one.

  1. C'mon Children (3:09)
  2. Bad Tune (4:41)
  3. Help Somebody (4:05)
  4. Moment Of Truth (3:11)
Review: Dynamite Cuts' latest extra-special double "45" mines ones of the earliest albums from soul and funk legends Earth, Wind & Fire, a 1971 set that was notably more psychedelic in sound than many of their more celebrated later releases. Opener "C'mon Children" is fiery, weighty and driving in the style of San Francisco funk-rock heavyweights "Tower of Power", while "Bad Tune" more than lives up to its title in a "bad meaning good" way (it also includes some crazy solos, which is no bad thing). Over on disc two, "Help Somebody" is an insanely up-tempo, horn-heavy Boogaloo style romp, while "Momet of Truth" is a low-down funk number straight out of the top drawer.

I Like Your Style
Cat: CORD 7014. Rel: 20 Nov 18
  1. I Like Your Style (3:24)
  2. The Love I Found In You (feat Chuck Edwards) (4:15)
Review: During the 1970s, San Francisco-based family band The Edwards Generation released a handful of obscure singles that are now sought by funk and soul collectors the world over. These very same collectors should enjoy this tidy seven-inch on Cordial, which offers up two previously unheard recordings from the Chuck Edwards-helmed outfit. A-side "I Like Your Style" is a breezy and laidback dancefloor mover, with a sweet lead vocal, rubbery slap bass, jangling guitars, fuzzy horns and unfussy but floor-ready drums. Chuck Edwards sings lead on the loved-up, West Coast style goodness of "The Love I Found In You", a sunshine-ready number that's arguably the stronger of two killer cuts.

Review: Straight form the heart of London via the mind of Detroit, the ever-consistent Soul Brother crew have laid down another stellar reissue here through Dee Edwards' gorgeous "(I Can) Deal With That". Originally out on the much-coveted De-To label in 1977, the original mix is a delicate, whaling soul monster that'll melt your heart from its first guitar riff - Edwards' voice is truly magnetic over the slow-burning percussion. There's a more stripped-down 'Strings' version to act as the cherry on the cake - you just gotta.

Cat: SS 0001. Rel: 01 Jul 20
  1. Thanks To You (part I - vocal) (4:56)
  2. Thanks To You (part II - instrumental) (3:50)
Review: It would be fair to say that the Egyptians are not one of the more celebrated soul acts from Cincinatti, Ohio. They released a smattering of seven-inch singles on tiny labels during the early-to-mid 1970s, none of which made much of an impact outside of their local scene. In recent years these 45s have become collector's items, with "Thanks To You" - a super-sweet soul slow-jam rich in harmonic group vocals and effortlessly fluid and jazzy guitar parts - being the most in demand of all. Here the record is finally reissued, with facsimile labels and the same track listing (vocal version on the A-side, instrumental take on the flip). If rare, life-affirming 1970s soul loveliness is your thing, it's well worth a listen.

An iconic rare groove gem from the 80s, it has since been sampled any number of times by giants like A Tribe Called Quest. An edited version has been put out before on an Expansion 7" but an extended version has alway been sought after. Well, here it is along with 'Give Me Your Love', a solo tune from Sylvia. 'Sing Me' also makes the cut to ensure this soul gem is an essential pick up.

  3. What's Up (instrumental) (4:21)
  4. Space Between Us (instrumental) (4:16)
Review: If you heard this collaboration between female vocal duo Ekkah and Dam Funk without knowing the identities of those involved, you would automatically assume that it was a little-known '80s soul EP. Both of the original tracks showcased here - "What's Up" and "Space Between Us" - sparkle with authentic 1980s synth-soul flavours, from the use of distinctive TR-808 cowbells and tactile synthesized basslines, to the vibrant colours of producer Dam Funk's colourful chords and melodies. Ekkah's vocals, too, are deliciously evocative and emotion-rich, conjuring images of cruising down Sunset Boulevard in the early hours in a soft-top convertible, killer boogie jams playing on the radio. The silkscreen sleeve is a thing of rare beauty, too.

Review: Afro disco fresh from 79: Eko Roosevelt Louis's third album Funky Disco Music will go down as one of Cameroon's finest disco LPs. Produced and pressed by French label Dragon Phenix, it's still reasonably easy to track down, too. For a taster, grab three of its tropical charms on this Fly By Night repress: "Funky Disco Music" is an infectious vocal-led cut that's written solely to make people get down, "Ndolo Embe Mulema" struts with much more Afro rock fusion while the harmonies of "Bowa'a Mba Ngebe" are sweeter than the finest honey you've ever tasted. For contemporary kicks Riccio has expertly touched the title track for a modern dancefloor/DJ friendly punch. Perfect.

Review: Following El Buho's "Tributaries" remix album, Wonderwheel offer up this choice 7" featuring two distinct cuts not found on the main record. First up is El Buho's take on grand master Quantic, working with the storied producer's considerable knowledge of Latin music to create a remix of "Cumbia Sobre El Mar" already well loved on globally minded dancefloors. 1. El Klan - "Cold Sweat" (edit) (4:13)
  2. John Wagner Coalition - "Cold Sweat" (edit) (3:12)
Review: Mushi 45 is launching a new series featuring fresh edits of obscure covers of cuts by James Brown and the JB's. The first boasts two thoroughly obscure covers of "Cold Sweat". On the A you'll find a tidy tweak of a rousing, raucous and sexually charged 1968 version by El Klan, a Mexican band renowned for their heavyweight take on funk, soul and rhythm and blues. Over on side B you'll find an interpretation from the John Wagner Coalition that originally featured on their 1976 debut album, which unusually was made up entirely of James Brown covers. Their version is a little more laidback, with tons of spacey synthesizer flourishes, crunchy Clavinet lines and oodles and wild Hammond organ solos.

Review: Big Crown are releasing El Michels Affair's latest and possibly greater album this month, but also this tidy new 7". The A side "Reasons" is a collaboration with Bobby Oroza that follows on from their last well received work together in fine style. The results is a deep and existential trip with lush guitar notes and Oroza's voice musing on the struggles of life. "Hipps" is pulled from El Michels Affair's aforementioned album Adult Themes and has a crushing beat and standout horn arrangements that have made the leader of this band so well acclaimed.

Review: It's been five years since Truth & Soul's octet gave us the incredible Wu Tang version album. It's been two years since they last dropped a single, too. However the band is back and their trademark cinematic soul is richer and more emotive than ever. From the instant the trembling flute and guitar open with the cuddly, ultimately positive "Kiddy Ditty" we're whisked on a largely instrumental journey that flings us through the wild west ("Little House"), soul's early JB chapters ("This Song For You") and straight up NY low-slung funk ("A Little Sloppy"). Climaxing with a Lee Fields featured "By The Time I Get To Phoenix", Loose Change is a kind reminder of just how accomplished and creative El Michels Affair are. No change there, then.

Mysterious newcomer producer Demi Riquisimo takes care of the opener with a remix of Elia y Elizabeth's signature hit 'Alegria' that is brilliantly tropical and new age. Parisian Yuksek then also works the same tune into a lush mid tempo disco stomper. Reverse the 12" and you'll find Bostonian-come-Colombian BOSQ flipping 'Soy Una Nube' init a soul enriched banger and Baranquilla natives Vagabundo Club Socia close things out with some up tempo funk and precise drum work. Review: For the latest volume in their ongoing "Reggae Cut Loud" series of seven-inch singles, Harlem Shuffle Records have gathered together two suitably rare gems from the undisputed king of rocksteady, Alton Ellis, neither of which have previously featured on a "45". A-side "Pumping In", an early rocksteady treat, is rich in R&B style guitar riffs, warm bass and an echo-laden vocal from Ellis. It was recorded in 1970 but for one reason or another only surfaced a few years ago. Flipside "Knock On Wood", a cover of the Eddie Floyd soul favourite, was recorded a number of times by Ellis; this version is the superior 1972 Joe Gibbs take, which boasts some superb Hammond organ sounds and a defiantly dub-wise reggae riddim. It's absolutely essential.

Review: Ever since their first record launched on Futuristica Music, back in 2008, Emanative have been quietly shaping the contemporary jazz-dance landscape - an achievement for which they are rarely accredited to. Hopefully, we can change some of those misconceptions by telling you just how special this new EP for Jazz45 is sounding! The opening "New Day" features the soulful vocals of Ahu over a rolling, breaks-centric groove with plenty of melodic quirks and, of course, the unstoppable euphoric power of the flute; the flipside's instrumental allows you to get even closer to the music constructed by Emanative, which is undoubtedly the outfit's long-running forte.

Nick Emanative initially provided Bex with a hazy, 808 / African-inspired sketch and things were taken from there with a back and forth dialogue resulting in an afro tinged house groover with post punk-esque vocal, Ghanaian Gyil xylophone and synths and tape delay from Hector Plimmer. It makes for a fascinating pair of tunes.

Review: Afro-Carribean Latin fusionists Empresarios have been doing their thing with modest success since the turn of the decade, serving up albums and singles that cleverly combine elements of cumbia, reggae, salsa, hip-hop, dub and house. Here they appear on 7" for the very first time, serving up two typically steamy slabs of ear-pleasing dancefloor fusion for the Virginia-based Boogieburg imprint. While stoned Latin hip-hop flipside "The Vibes" is undoubtedly a cheeky, cheery and quietly impressive affair, it's A-side "Morena" that hits home hardest. Sitting somewhere between electro-cumbia, salsa and skanking Latin pop, it's a full-force blast of sunshine that will sound particularly potent at outdoor parties in the summer months ahead.

Helpfully, Rain & Shine have decided to save us all a few bob by slinging out this licensed reissue. The title track is something of a bustling disco-funk gem - a genuinely wonderful fusion of hazy vocals, dueling horn solos, spacey synthesizer flourishes and driving bass guitar. B-side "Star of the Disco" is an even more up-tempo affair, with mazy saxophone solos, rasping horn stabs and starry jazz-funk keys riding a walking bassline and high-octane disco drums.
