Review: Few artists have had such a global impact on electronic music than Thomas Bangalter, the legendary DJ, producer and songwriter who is best known as one-half of the former dance titans Daft Punk. He has many more skills up his sleeve though as he has proven since leading the duo. One is writing soundtracks such as this one, Chiroptera, for Acte 2: Retour a la Caverne, which was a JR creation with choreography from Damien Jalet. It was performed in Paris in front of the Opera de Paris (Opera Garnier) on November 12th, 2023 and involved more than 150 dancers. You can now relive it musically with this limited 12".

Review: Dynamite Cuts is in a real purple patch right now and keeping that up for the London label is John Barelt. Here, two cuts of his previously released on the Perception label get a first ever 7" vinyl pressing. They come from his hard to find and eponymously entitled album from 1971 and are packed with classic and unknown drum samples. First up is 'Boogie', a steamy number with fantastic Rhodes chords in the background while busy guitar riffs vie for attention up front. The rhythm section flows as smooth as silk and make this a seductive number indeed. On the reverse, 'You've Just Been Bitten' is a vocal cut that teases and pleases.

Review: Following their 15 part BBC radio series Pop Go The Beatles, the legendary Liverpool group returned for a set of two-hour holiday specials titled From Us To You. The first was recorded on December 18 at the BBC Paris Studio and aired on Boxing Day, December 26, 1963. Somewhat randomly hosted by Australian television personality - turned national pariah - Rolf Harris, the show included a special performance where the Beatles joined him for his 1960 hit 'Tie Me Kangaroo Down.' Also featured was the group's favourite British rocker, Joe Brown, accompanied by his band, the Bruvvers, who brought an extra dose of British rock 'n' roll to the event.

Review: Initially put forward as a potential Beatles single during the mid 1990s 'Anthology' period but shelved due to objections from George Harrison, 'Now and Then' has been trailed as the iconic band's 'final single'. It's re-emergence now in finished form (it was completed partially using AI, but also some studio trickery by Giles Martin) ties in with the reissue of the band's two 1973 'best of' compilations (the so-called 'Red' and 'Blue' collections). Like their two singles of the 90s, it features Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr and the late George Harrison finishing off an early 70s John Lennon demo, with a little help from producer Jeff Lynne. Review: With a million preorders in the UK alone, The Beatles' 'I Want To Hold Your Hand' soared to number 1 in December 1963 and knocked their own 'She Loves You' off the top spot. It became their first official single on Capitol Records and was backed by an aggressive marketing campaign. The single, which had 'I Saw Her Standing There' on the B-side, was rush-released in the USA in January 1964 and quickly hit number 1 on the Hot 100 by February 1st. Selling over 12 million copies worldwide, it marked the arrival of Beatlemania. Now it has been remastered from original US tapes by Kevin Reeves for this special 7" reissue.

Review: On March 31, 1964, The Beatles recorded seven songs for the BBC's Saturday Club. Three of them were covers of American rock 'n' roll and country songs. The final segment aired on the BBC's General Overseas Service and earlier that day, the band filmed a live performance at the Scala Theatre in Kings Cross for their upcoming film, A Hard Day's Night. This EP includes 'The Hippy Hippy Shake', recorded for Saturday Club and originally broadcast on February 15, as well as the catchy 'Everybody's Trying To Be My Baby' and 'Long Tall Sally'. The band's tight musicianship can be heard throughout this record, which serves as a great example of The Beatles' dynamic early sound during their rise to global fame.

Review: The Icons label presses up tracks in numerous different genres from legendary artists from across the years on nice coloured vinyl. This one is an orange 12" from the iconic David Bowie who was on tour across the world in 1990 when he stopped in Chile for one particularly stand-out night. That evening amongst many other classics in his set was 'Heroes' which features here as a live recording from the night first as a Jesse Zotti Extended Mix and then on the flip as a Jesse Zotti Instrumental. Two great versions of a great track.

Review: For the first time on green vinyl, cinematic funk and r&b singer Boz Scaggs gives us the Lowdown. One of the breakthrough hits from his 1976 album Silk Degrees, Scaggs' stylised, night-flighty sound is put on full blast here. Co-written by Scaggs and keyboardist David Paich (Toto), the record's unburdened and frolicking feel acts to disguise its subject matter: Scaggs' intention is double-sided, with the lyrics warning the listener about an unreliable, buttery figure, whose romantic trickery warrants an urgent briefing (hence "lowdown"). A twist arrives at the point of the chorus, when we realise that said bullshit artist might just be Boz himself. Well, we can't quite believe it. Are all us romantics loving a lie, to some extent?

Review: Live In Montreal documents a live performance by the towering rock titans Babe Ruth in April 1975, at which point the band consisted of a total of four out of its five original members. Formerly only available via internet archive sites or in inferior quality, this rather legendary concert brought with it a nigh demonic energy, with the English hard rockers laying down one of their best documented performances by way of gnarly vocal snarlage from lead singer Ellie Hope and prime shreddage from the likes of Bernie Marsden and Ray Knott. The band notably broke the USA and Canada; Live In Montreal is a testament to their popularity across the Atlantic, and hears a full-quality restoration of some heavy live renditions of such greats as 'Wells Fargo', 'Sad But Rich', 'Black Dog' and 'A Fistful Of Dollars'.

This reissue, featuring 'Good Lovin' Gone Bad,' is pressed at Quality Record Pressings and housed in a tip-on old style gatefold double pocket jacket by Stoughton Printing. Recorded just three months after their 1974 debut, Straight Shooter is a tight collection of eight strong, steady rockers. From the moment 'Good Lovin' Gone Bad' kicks off, it's clear Bad Company expanded their sonic palette. The album showcases vibrant colors: acoustic guitars for light and shade, guitars channeled through chorus pedals, and alternating pianos and organs with the occasional wash of strings. Review: From the wreckage of Free came Bad Company, the English hard rock supergroup fronted by singer Paul Rodgers and featuring his drummer bandmate Simon Kirke, Mott the Hoople guitarist Mick Ralphs, and King Crimson bassist Boz Burrell. Peter Grant, who managed the rock band Led Zeppelin, also managed Bad Company until 1982. The group's eponymous 1974 album debut decidedly proves the band is proudly not progressive - the details make a difference, as do the pastoral acoustics of the closing 'Seagull' - reducing their rock 'n' roll to a strong, heavy crunch; compare 'Ready For Love,' a tune Ralphs brought over from Mott the Hoople, to the original to see how these quartet members keep their heads down as they do their business. All the hallmarks of a top-notch Analogue Productions reissue are here for your pleasure: mastered directly from the original master tape by Ryan K. Smith at Sterling Sound and cut at 45rpm.

Review: As an ode to the upcoming remake of David Lynch's infamous Twin Peaks, there is a flurry of Angelo Badalamenti reissues at the moment. In fact, both this original soundtrack, which is the official music as heard in the 1992 film, and the Fire Walk With Me spin-off have both resurfaced as reissues this week. Unsurprisingly, we recommend for you to snap up both because they have been something of a rarity over the last 10 years. Timeless and iconic from start to finish, this soundtrack is not for the faint of heart, and will likely stir some feelings upon initial listen. This will be all the more palpable if you were shocked and eternally intrigued by the movie. We were, of course, and we absolutely cannot wait for the new series either!

Review: Before Twin Peaks and all that followed, director David Lynch and composer Angelo Badalamenti had worked together just once: on the former's 1986 mystery noir movie Blue Velvet. Lynch asked Badalamenti to create an original score inspired by both the works of Shostakovich and the smoky, clandestine atmosphere found at blues and jazz clubs. These two musical threads are explored on side A and B respectively. So, while the first side contains numerous sweeping, dark and moody orchestral compositions, turn the record over and you'll find classics from Roy Orbison and Bill Doggett, as well as Badalamenti's spine-tingling interpretation of pop standard "Blue Velvet". Featuring a mixture of simmering strings, breathy female vocals and atmospheric field recordings, it's as creepy a version of the much-covered song as you'll hear.

Review: Angelo Badalamenti is to noir thrillers what Ennio Morricone is to the spaghetti Western scene. The Italo-American composer has been a pivotal part of the Hollywood soundtrack scene since the 70s and, among many cult-like figures, he's collaborated extensively with the great David Lynch on projects such as Blue Velvet and, of course, the present Twin Peaks, a film which has reached a God-like status over the last two decades. The music from the motion picture is as vivid and dream-like as the film itself; Badalalementi immerses you in a world of Neo-gothic trance and bizarre, fairy-like dances that instantly recall the movie's infamous dance scene concerning two horses. What is most notable about it is his use of subtle jazz nuances and the man's pioneering downtempo style. NB: this particular release, Fire Walk With Me, features additional music and acts as a companion to the official soundtrack as heard in the movie. What a soundtrack. Totally essential.

Coinciding with the popular release of the first ever film in the franchise, the original score for the 2023 fantasy adventure film Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves finally drops via Mercury. Directed by Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley, and based on the myriad tabletop game, the film follows a group of thieves who embark on a quest to steal a legendary artifact from a powerful wizard. Composed by composer Lorne Balfe, the soundtrack is monumental, with a whopping 49 tracks of epic, dark-fantastical music blending an impressive array of orchestral and electronic elements. There's also a credits version of 'Wings of Time' by Tame Impala on there.

Review: Lewis' gentle and bewitching L'Amour, which came complete with a bizarre backstory involving the disappearance of the blonde-haired would-be-matinee-idol on its sleeve, was one of the surprise delights of the year. Review: When a Yeti is killed by a group of Sherpa, a bunch of university scientists travel out to Nepal in the hope of discovering where the creature came from. There, they team up with a rough and ready tracker, and head out from a remote village into the great white wilderness beyond. Avalanches, prehistoric species, and ancient hominids and alien reptiles all follow as the plot thickens and freezes. If you didn't catch The Primevals when it first arrived on screens, we implore you to watch the 2023 animated sci-fi action romp. Stop motion animator David Allen co-wrote and directed it, spending more than 50 years on the development which sadly completed after he died. It's a family friendly epic that looks gorgeous and plays out compellingly, thanks in no small part to the Richard Bland soundtrack. An homage to the great adventure epics that once defined cinema, the score is classic cinematic stuff, a classical overture of bombastic chase sequences, serene harmonies and pin-drop tension.

Review: Spanish funk-rock group Barrabas formed in the 70s and had big success through that decade and the next. Drummer and producer Fernando Arbex lead the band and fomented a fusion of Latin rock and jazz-funk initially, before moving into a more disco orientated sound later on. Power was the band's second album and it came in 1973 with country-tinged tunes such as 'Boogie Rock', high speed funk workouts like 'Keep On Moving' and then more jazzy library sounds such as 'The Horse.' The second half of the album touches on busy dance floor funk like 'Casanova' and more stripped back and deep cuts like 'Children.'

The album didn't chart so well but still serves as a superb overview of the career of one of Britain's great singer-songwriters.

To say the New Musical Express pulled together an impressive line up for the magazine's celebratory concert, at which the winners of a reader's poll were revealed, would be an understatement. And this is before we even mention the fact The Rolling Stones were also involved, only beaten to the top of the bill by The Beatles. On the day, Liverpool's Fab Four were presented their award by none other than Roger Moore, and then proceeded to play their first live show in 15 weeks. 'She Loves You', 'You Can't Do That', 'Long Tall Sally', and 'Can't Buy Me Love' were among the highlights, with an audience of 10,000 packing out the Empire Pool in Wembley for the entire day. Review: The Beatles were quite possibly at their peak already by the time 1964 came around, certainly in terms of the adoration of their fans and the wild energy they brought to live shows. This set from that year captures that in mono and despite it only being one record it is packed with more than 20 early tunes from the Liverpudlian outfit. Plenty you will know like 'She Loves You' and 'I Saw her Standing There' but many you may not. Either way it is a fine reminder of the greatness of this band back from their earliest era.

Apple has typically gone all-out on this 50th anniversary re-issue, not only remastering everything (or at least those tracks that hadn't already been tweaked by Giles Martin in recent years), but also expanding each collection to three discs via the addition of other fan favourites and tracks that missed out first time round. As for the vinyl itself, it has been half-speed remastered to guarantee superior sound quality.
