Review: It doesn't get much more appealing, really. One of the UK's most critically revered and cult-followed bands teams up with arguably the finest British indie label for the latest in the latter's celebrated 7" single series. A Certain Ratio's most recent long player, It All Comes Down To This, was produced by Speedy Wunderground's Dan Carey, and so it makes sense that the imprint and group now team up again for this exclusive one-off. It certainly sounds as good as you'd hope, the two tracks here finding a space in the trippier and weirder end of the ACR spectrum. 'Clockwork Orange' grinds and strains its way through a stepping, dark and shadowy feeling. Flip it to find the appropriately titled 'Dubwork Orange' doing something, well, dubbier, with that source material.

Review: Perhaps one of the most important bands to come out of Manchester ever. Up there with Joy Division, their funky post-punk is the very essence of that genre and possibly why a lot of bands like to call themselves post-punk. They're just wishing they sound as good as A Certain Ratio. For this latest release, the follow-up to their album It All Comes Down To This, they've reworked songs from said album - sensationally - and released a Christmas single. 'Now And Laughter' is described as an ode to "the unsung heroes that are on hand when the pressures of the festivities can become too much to bear." It's awash with sumptuous echoing guitar, a somber lead vocal which makes you want to raise your lighter and gently sway. There's a hint of David Bowie in there and the lyrics appear genuinely emotional and appreciative. This is a song of blissful poignance that can help remind us of what really matters in life as it captures a sense of vulnerability and awe in the magic of the moment.

Review: Celebrate the 25th anniversary of AFI's All Hallow's E.P. with this limited-edition release on "Spectral Pink" vinyl. This cult-classic EP, originally released in 1999, is reimagined with alternative fluorescent cover art and includes a 10" x 20" black light die-cut coffin poster, evoking the eerie charm of the original Nitro Records promo. The EP, clocking in at a fitting 13 minutes, features AFI's standout tracks: a formidable cover of The Misfits' 'Halloween', the iconic 'The Boy Who Destroyed the World', the infectious 'Totalimmortal', and the fan favorite 'Fall Children'. Review: As Amyl & The Sniffers continue their ensuing mission to carry Aussie punk shitheadedry to every corner of the globe that has an amp for them to blow out, it dawned on the members that they hadn't dropped any piece of new material since 2021's spazzed out pub rock sophomore debacle Comfort To Me. Rectifying this issue posthaste comes the new 7" banger 'U Should Not Be Doing That', which showcases the unhinged darling that is Amy Taylor taking square aim at "random 40 year old metalheads sitting around a table doing lines and bitching about a 28 year old chick in a band for wearing shorts and "selling out"". Boasting the feral flip 'Facts', and produced by Nick Launay (Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds), Amyl & The Sniffers appear to be cooking, just not quite ready to let us peek into the kitchen yet.

Review: When British prog rock band Babe Ruth recorded 'The Mexican' - a low-slung funk-rock workout that came complete with weighty bass and killer drum breaks - they could have had no idea of the impact it would have during the block party phase of hip-hop's evolution (or, for that matter, that Jellybean Benitez would record a Latin hip-hop cover in the early 80s). It's the track's significance within hip-hop that inspired these revisions from break-digger Mister Mushi. Both of the producer's 'Special Edit' versions - vocal on the A-side, instrumental on the flip - make the most of the track's prototype hip-hop breaks, restless bassline and Latin-tinged fuck-rock guitar licks. They're basically the breaker-friendly revisions the dancers want and need.
