Review: German mainstay Johannes Albert returns after a six-year hiatus with his third club album, Private Dancer, and it's worth the wait. As expected, it is a deep dive into refined house music full of maturing production, warm textures, subtle grooves and emotive undertones. The standout title track features longtime collaborator Iron Curtis, and together they craft a hypnotic blend of classic deep house with modern minimalism. Highlights include the gentle grooves and percussion of 'L'Chaim', the steamy nocturnal soul of 'The Night (Moves On' and 'Follow The Strings', which is a more punchy heater. It's the sound of a seasoned producer delivering understated dancefloor gold.

Review: Alien D is the NYC-based producer Daniel Creahan, and he's back with a debut on Theory Therapy that taps into widescreen worlds of techno immersion. Departing from the ambient abstraction of his previous work, this album as a subtle kinetic pulse with tracks like 'Soil Dub' and 'Sleepy's Gambit' propel listeners forward with dubwise rhythms crafted for deep dancefloors. The album builds on an infectious, steady groove with repeating phrases and subtle shifts that keep the music in constant motion. Conceived in the first days after the COVID lockdown, these sounds exude a hopeful quality and capture the transcendent moments of early-morning parties when the moment is full of unbridled hope for what might come.

Review: Turin-born and raised artist Andrea has explored plenty of different genres across his wonderfully experimental sounds, but mostly they are couched in techno with hints of 90s breakbeat and IDM. "Living Room is his third album and finds him tapping into an introspective sound with reflective melodies and a cosmic sense of travel. Right from the off, you're cast adrift in a world of shimmering melody and plucked strings, cascading arps and widescreen synthscapes and it is there you stay for the whole absorbing duration, though sometimes lithe rhythms bring more propulsion. A magnificently accomplished and detailed work.

Review: The UK's Robin Lee is one of the members of much-loved disco gang Faze Action but also he's behind Andromeda Orchestra who return here with an album that offers a cosmic fusion of jazz-funk and disco. It's been put together with Moogs, clarinets, Rhodes and rich analogue textures that make for a mix of nostalgia and sonic richness that sinks you in deep. Blending nostalgia with innovation, Lee creates deep, immersive soundscapes. There are widescreen odysseys like 'Mythical', loved-up bunkers such as 'Thinking About Your Love' and a rare Nick The Record remix of 'Get Up & Dance' that overflows with cosmic melodies and lush, life-affirming strings.

Review: The multi-talented Joe Armon-Jones is back in the game with his most ambitious and self-defined solo work yet. All The Quiet (Part II) is a colourful collision of jazz, funk, dub, hip-hop and soul that was entirely written, produced and mixed by the man himself. His work as part of Mercury Prize-winning Ezra Collective is what established Armon-Jones, but his evolution as a solo artist on his own label, Aquarii Records, has been just as essential. This follow-up to 2019's Turn To Clear View features collaborators like Greentea Peng, Yazmin Lacey, Hak Baker and Nubya Garcia and is a deeply personal sound that veers from expansive and cosmic to more intimate and tender.

Review: Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington are unquestionably two jazz titans and they finally teamed up for a rare studio session that's pure magic. Though they'd known each other since the mid-1920s and often shared stages, official recordings together were few and far between. This album breaks that drought with Armstrong lending his unmistakable touch to Ellington's iconic compositions. Duke joins in on piano, while Louis is backed by his All Stars minus regular pianist Billy Kyle. The result is a meeting of swing royalty, full of charisma, chemistry and classic tunes reimagined by two of jazz's most legendary voices. It's as good as you'd hope.

Review: Writers will appreciate the double play on words no doubt, and trying to figure out who wouldn't get off on the Au Pairs is part of the brain teaser here. That said, the British post punk outfit only managed to peak at 79 in the album charts with this one, so clearly back in 1982 plenty of people either felt differently to us or weren't actually listening. Rediscovering the record now confirms their ignorance. Musically, Sense & Sensuality is a far broader collection than the group's preceding work, smashing through the limitations of a genre that was in its Informed by free form jazz, theatrical cabaret, new wave and art pop, it's a wild and unarguably fun ride instrumentally speaking, while lyrics speak to personal challenges and timely political issues.

Her performance of the album at The Jazz Standard caught the attention of Blue Note's Bruce Lundvall and lead to a celebrated run of releases and international acclaim. Modern Cool became an audiophile favourite thanks to Jim Anderson's meticulous recording and Barber's sharp songwriting and artistry, and it still sounds super here as reissued by Impex on VR900-D2-pressed 180-gram vinyl. It's the perfect way to enjoy a real jazz classic.

The collection was produced alongside Roberto Sanchez at A-Lone Ark Muzik Studio and features standout tracks like the uplifting 'Enlightenment' and the meditative nyahbinghi-inspired 'East African Rift.' The album was developed during a studio session that also birthed albums by Clive Matthews and Lone Ark Riddim Force and completes a trilogy focused on timeless reggae foundations that are rich in analogue warmth and melodic finesse. All of this affirms Bass Lee's place in the new wave of roots reggae musicians pushing the genre forward.

Review: Black Market Karma return with the second chapter in their two-part Fuzz Club album series. Written, recorded, and produced by Stanley Belton, it's the imperfections and unplanned happenings that are the real joy of this ode to 1960s and 1970s psychedelic rock & roll will modern beats. A striking follow up to Wobble, it's fuzzy, crackly, angular and strikingly human considering it's fundamentally electronic. "Mellowmaker was made immediately after Wobble, I kinda see them as two sides of each other", Belton has been quoted as saying. "With these two albums I've attempted to crystallise how it feels to be stuck between a feeling of amnesia of the soul and the earthly experience of piloting a meat suit... I'm still chasing that longing intangible 'Hiraeth' feeling. The sense of wanting to find our way home to a place that maybe doesn't exist."

Review: Back in 1994, Reading-based band Blueboy released their first album for Sarah Records: Unisex. The LP, which is one of the great indie/jangle pop records of the 90s, stands the test of time thanks to mesmerizing songcraft. To celebrate its 30th anniversary the band got together in May 2024 to perform live at The Water Rats in London's Kings Cross. It was their first show in 25 years and thankfully someone had the foresight to record the set. Whilst not limited to songs from Unisex, the key numbers from it are on here: 'Self Portrait' is up there with anything by Pulp or The Smiths. And on 'The Joy Of Living' co-singer Keith Girdler has an air of The Only Ones' Peter Perrett about him. Plus the synth parts and cello make for stunning instrumentals and the lyrical directness is refreshing in an age of smoke and mirrors and metaphor.

Review: Bobby Montez was a key figure in West Coast Latin jazz and brought colourful energy and rich musicality to the scene in the late 1950s and early 60s. A multi-instrumentalist from a musical Arizona family, Montez settled in Los Angeles, where he balanced accounting by day (!) with leading his vibraphone-driven band at night. His sound is reminiscent of Cal Tjader but fused jazz with cha-cha and pachanga rhythms. With standout albums like Jungle Fantastique and Viva!, Montez's work offered fiery interpretations of Hollywood and Broadway themes in Latin styles. Though he retired from performing by the late 60s, his legacy remains lively and essential, not least through the magic of this record.

Review: Released on June 28th, 2004, Afrodisiac marked a major shift in American r&b queen Brandy's sound as she moved away from longtime collaborator Rodney "Darkchild" Jenkins and embraced producers like Timbaland, Kanye West and Warryn Campbell. The record focused on Brandy's personal growth while addressing relationship woes and self-reflection in tracks like 'I Tried' and 'Who I Am.' The standout song, 'I Tried,' samples Iron Maiden's 'The Clansman' and features Brandy's most raw and emotional performance. The shift resonated with fans for its gritty, more relatable edge and remains her most well-received project.

Review: Ambre Ciel is a Montreal-based composer and singer known for her dreamy, spacious soundscapes. Drawing from impressionism, American minimalism and contemporary classical music, her work blends layered violins, piano and ethereal vocals in both English and French so is a sophisticated and stylish sound. Coming from a family of artists, she began with violin at six, later experimenting with pedals, loops and harmonies. Her debut album Still, There is the Sea marks a delicate yet bold entry into her sonic world and is a deeply personal, atmospheric journey shaped by strings, acoustic textures and voice. It's an imperfect beginning, as she calls it, but one brimming with intention and beauty.

Review: Italian techno heavyweight Claudio PRC's fifth album, Self Surrender, is a meditative dive into self-acceptance that comes on Amsterdam's long-running and always top-notch Delsin Records. Claudio delivers a fluid narrative across an exploration of tasteful ambient, dub, minimal house and deep techno here, and it opens with some absorbing introspection before gradually shifting into more kinetic territory. It is driven by pulsing kicks, dreamy textures, acid flourishes and ghostly strings as a refined blend of techno and house sounds all coalesce with the signature depth Claudio has honed over years of his craft. Self Surrender closes on an ethereal note, which encapsulates its core message of letting go.

He was well known and loved for his unique blend of neo-disco, funk and innovative musical styles and gained fans worldwide from Coachella to Paris. Following his EP Black Boogie Neon in 2018 and debut album Prosthetic Boombox back in 2021, this album is his grooviest yet as it blends hip-hop, r&b and drum & bass while featuring collaborations with Andrew VanWyngarden of MGMT, Jared Solomon and Nate Fox, who has worked with Chance the Rapper. Recorded while promoting their haunting third album Faith, the setlist draws from early classics like 'A Forest,' '10:15 Saturday Night' and 'Fire in Cairo' while darker cuts like 'All Cats Are Grey' and 'Play for Today' showcase the band's moody evolution from wiry, spiky songsmiths into epic goth pioneers. Stripped-down, urgent and undeniably magnetic, this live recording cemented The Cure's status as generational icons and even more years it, it is still resonant with intensity and vulnerability.

Review: A fourth full length from the Montreal-based enigma. Sarah Davachi's electroacoustic compositions have become the stuff of legend and hallucination-inducing live shows, refrains that bore into your mind then soul, detailed and complex ideas borne out in minimalist moods capable of taking listeners beyond themselves, out to somewhere completely new. Talk about a curveball, then. All My Circles Run features five totally unique compositions which all share one common trait - they eschew synthesisers and instead each focus on a different instrument. Hence the titles. 'For Strings', 'For Voice', 'For Piano', 'For Organ', 'Chanter'. But, although the record's core parts represent a different move for the musician, Davachi's incredible ear for subtly powerful sounds remains at the centre of the experience. So prepare to be blown away again. Gently.

It was produced by Ben Hillier and topped charts in 18 countries with the hit 'Precious'' the most standout. The nine-month tour across Europe and North America included festival headlining slots like Coachella and O2 Wireless but a real standout moment from it was their performance at KROQ-FM's Almost Acoustic Christmas concert, which was captured in full and now gets pressed up to this fine double album. This superb Christmas show is the sound of the band at their best during one of their many fine eras.

Intrigued by the mail, Dixon met Yamaha in London and unearthed a trove of beats that fit his evolving vision. Then, back in Richmond, Virginia, in mid-2024, Dixon built this resulting album from those sounds after teaming with past collaborator Koff and a vibrant crew including the likes of Anjimile, Pink Siifu, Reggie Pace, Eli Owens and more. Together, they sculpted a dreamlike world of hooks, horns and flowing interludes. Following the emotional depth of For My Mama... and Beloved! Paradise! Jazz!?, Magic, Alive! is a fine sonic reinvention that's playful, surreal and defiantly alive.

Tracks like 'Samba do Malandrinho' and 'Tio Macro' show off his slick chops and inventive style as he mixes tight rhythms with wild improvisation. It's a vivid trip to somewhere Brazilian heat meets American jazz cool. Fresh, funky and full of soul, Dom Salvador isn't just playing music here, he's rewriting the rules of jazz fusion, which is why this record is a classic of its genre and a vital reissue.

Review: Multi-genre acrobats and 70s American rockers The Doobie Brothers are back with more silky smooth signature harmonies from their home base in California with Walk This Road, a ten-tracker that unites core members Patrick Simmons, Tom Johnston, John McFee and Michael McDonald. It was produced by John Shanks and does a fine job of working each member's unique songwriting style into a cohesive collection. Themes of recovery, reflection and spiritual awakening run throughout, with Simmons describing it as "waking up to see the important things you've been missing." The title track has the legendary Mavis Staples and stands out as a fine soulful anthem of unity and hope that will resonate in any era.

Review: E-bony's Digital Dawn album is about "defining his identity as an artist" and it comes through INDUSTRIAS MEKANIKAS. This 12-tracker welds together electro and techno with plenty of personal sound perspective and dark textures that keep it decidedly underground. Collaborating with Noamm on four tracks, their creative synergy adds depth and elevates the record's complexity with the likes of 'Matrix Kod' getting gritty and eerie, 'Aurora Noir' bringing snappy kicks and coruscated acid lines and 'Data Delight' fizzing with pixelated synth sugariness.

Review: How much soul and funk does East of Underground deliver? A lot, that's how much. This raw and righteous gem from 1971 was originally issued by the US Army and handed out to troops during the Vietnam War, which means that original copies are insanely rare and pricey. Thankfully, this reissue brings it back to the people, minus the less memorable Soap LP. What remains is pure fire: gritty covers of Curtis Mayfield, Funkadelic, James Brown and more, all of which are played with heart and urgency by a group of enlisted musicians. Bonus fact: their take on The Fuzz's 'I Love You for All Seasons' became the backbone of US trap star 21 Savage's 'A Lot.'

Review: Nadah El Shazly returns with her second album and first on One Little Independent and Backward Music. The Egyptian-born, Montreal-based artist blends experimental sonics with Arabic roots and improvisation on Laini Tani, and crafts music that slips between worlds and takes you with it. The whole record pulses like a hot night stretching into morning. It's sweaty, surreal, and endlessly alive and each track is a vivid fragment: defiant, euphoric or quietly raw. El Shazly's lush vocals and layered metaphors weave a dreamstate of meaning and mystery that bold and chaotic yet controlled so is a record to get lost in, then hit repeat as you try to decode its hidden truths.

Review: Southwind from Hachijo is a rare gem from 1990s Japan dug out delightfully by Forest Jams and written by E.S. Island. This reissue of it dives deeper into ambient terrain while embracing tribal and spiritual tones unlike previous works. It was recorded on the remote Hachijo Island and is awash with organic textures and traditional Japanese instruments that effortlessly make for a meditative soundscape. The music is largely performed by the late Eisuke Takahashi and Nene Sanae, whose chemistry channels the island's raw, natural energy into its ever-shifting tones and timbres. It's a deeply personal and atmospheric listen and an ode to place and spirit that takes you there in an instant

Review: "Instead of escaping somewhere else, this time I want to be here." We're not 100% sure if that's Fabiano or E35 Netherlands quoted, and woe betide anyone who thinks they can interpret such cryptic (not to mention borrowed) quips without asking the person who said them what they meant. Nevertheless, Landmarks very quickly presents itself as an ambient beauty born of this planet and nowhere else. At times the sounds are challenging - heavily textured tracks rather than the lush dreamscapes we often associate with the rather reductive 'ambient' label. Sometimes things are quite eerie, like the disquiet that materialises around halfway through 'Flowers On The Hospital Grounds', and the dense static waves of 'Saturated Memory On A Rooftop'. At other moments, tones invoke the mystery of night skies over Earth, or the rhythm of a world filled with enough life to mean we're still finding new species today.

In the interim, he's run Blueberry Records, worked with Mykki Blanco and become a father. His daughter's playful influence is said to have ignited a fresh creative energy in his music. Neurotica bears that out - it's a sugar-rush of high-speed bounce blending energetic euro-pop and childlike vocals into something urgent and fun. Drew crafted it quickly, with tracks written in half a day, and shaped with Planet Mu boss Mike Paradinas' guidance. It's a joyful, refreshing album that resonates across generations and captures the essence of fun, movement and simplicity. A return to form, for sure.

The Norwegian quartet blends ethereal downtempo, trip-hop, folk and immersive electronica into 11 hauntingly beautiful tracks. From the brooding opener 'Capitalism' to the cinematic closer 'Omens,' the album captures dusk-toned stillness and dreamlike introspection. A poignant swansong, Take Me Places is a testament to the band's timeless artistry and an emotional, genre-blurring journey that leaves a lasting imprint on the soul.

Make no mistake, Have Heart made a big impression in 2006 with The Things That Carry, their debut full length. Following on from two very well received EPs, the record cemented the band's status as leading lights in a nascent positive hardcore movement. Screaming out of the starting blocks, the music is angry but the messaging looks to celebrate ideas such as love, inclusivity, tolerance, difference and social consciousness. The group would only put out one more official LP after this one alongside a live album after they broke up, but their energy and ideas remain as relevant and vital today as they were back then.

What would be their final statement on the matter, disbanding 12 months or so later, Songs To Scream At The Sun would continue the focus on earnest messaging for the group, who were known for dealing with issues such as social ethics to inclusivity. Never really ones for compromise, while Have Heart continued in the positive hardcore vein here, it's also worth noting that at the time the sound itself was falling out of favour, but the Massachusetts troupe doubled down instrumentally, too. When many peers were desperately looking to dilute in the hopes of crossover success, this is how you bow out with style and dignity.

The latter is remembered as one of the hardest to define scores of all time, certainly in terms of a playable titles, and even 30 years on still amazes and baffles anyone who encounters it. Less well known are the artist's solo and standalone efforts, which came much later. Acrobatizm and Prepared Wave were the first two of those records, and emerged in the pre-pandemic late-noughties. Both draw heavily on the glitch and leftfield experimental techno worlds, which were in rude health at the time, doubling down on staccato rhythms and mind-blowing arpeggiation, with the punchiness and jerky vibes more than nod to the glory days of 8-bit gaming.

Her live shows are always high on energy and tunes of hers like 'No Quiero Marido' and 'Todo Es Plata' are some of many standouts from the last 20 years. The London-born, Amsterdam-based producer channels a period marked by heartbreak and isolation into the music, which means the album emerges as an emotional escape shaped by paintings, sketches and synth lines all crafted in studios from London to L.A. It balances vulnerability with resilience while weaving nostalgia and hope into the mix. Ultimately, Lenxi transforms pain into empowerment here and takes you from sounds of solitude to the dancefloor with a powerful, dreamlike narrative.

Review: A striking collection of digitally manipulated piano pieces, each one of them on this album are named after iconic films and TV shows. They are all crafted late at night as a response to passive media consumption and aim to blur the line between classical impressionism and contemporary digital manipulation. Drawing inspiration from Viktor Shklovsky's concept of "ostranenie" (which means estrangement), the work challenges habitual perceptions and makes the familiar feel strange. The music oscillates between mechanical MIDI chaos and intimate, fragile moments that question the emotional stakes of sound in a world where technology can often flatten deeper meaning. It's a profound exploration of art's role in resisting the numbing effects of mindless routine and endless immersion culture.

The surprise seven-track project was made in just 24 hours and announced via a post on X. It's a lo-fi synthwave collection that betrays her genre-defying instincts and trades neo-soul smoothness for raw, hallucinatory energy. It doesn't matter-PAST FUTUR.e is an unfiltered transmission from one of r&b's most inventive voices, and it's wildly unpredictable.

For those who are new to this particular troubadour's universe, Maltese is the indie-chamber pop-rock talent from Reading, England, who blew up with 'Even If It's A Lie', a single released on Soundcloud. A decade later, he's become a household name for those who like their male soloists to be cut from a timeless cloth, taking influence from some of the vocal and lyrical greats of the 20th Century - Leonard Cohen, Paul Simon and Nina Simone have all been cited by the man himself. Shades of all three here.

Review: OK. Let's face some facts. The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack to Drive is up there with one of the best scores ever put together. And that goes for the compositions of Cliff Martinez as much as the guest bands and artists drafted for the other songs. Where else are you going to hear Riziro Ortolani and Katy Ranieri's operatic overture, 'Oh My Love', and The Chromatics' low sung, mood-building electro tracker 'Tick of the Clock', side by side? The answer is, of course, nowhere. And that's just skimming the surface. Deeper inspection take us to some stunning pieces of ambient and drone. 'I Drive' is a remarkable example of gong bath on record, 'Skull Crushing' is overwhelmingly heavy thanks to its use of distant sound and up front quiet. It feels like you're in a pressurised chamber. We could go on, but that wouldn't save any room to mention the trophy piece - College and Electric Youth's spectacularly emotive synth stunner, 'A Real Hero'.

Review: To mark their tenth anniversary, Discom presents Return to the Future 1984-1994, a special edition long player celebrating the influential Belgrade synth-pop duo Max & Intro. The compilation features 12 remastered tracks sourced directly from the original master tapes and the collection highlights the group's distinctive blend of melodic synth lines and pop sensibilities that very much shaped the Yugoslav electronic scene. Rare extras include a 1985 interview, full lyrics sheet and previously unseen photographs by Goran Basari?, plus artwork from Max's Poster. This is a wonderful trip back to the future with cold, angular drum rhythms and deadpan vocals.
