Review: Released in 1977 on Buddha Records, Norman Connors' heartfelt number 'Once I've Been There' is a lush piece of honest-to-goodness soul music that's long been held in high regard by diggers. It features a powerful vocal performance from Prince Phillip Mitchell, warm orchestral instrumentation, and a gentle groove arranged by Jerry Peters. Blending elements of classic r&b with jazz sophistication, the track has a timeless, cinematic feel. It's a standout in US drummer Connors' catalogue. Released in the same year, 'Captain Connors' is a loose and limber soul-jazz workout, with energetic horns and deinty keys riding over a sprawling arrangement. Well worth adding to the collection.

Review: Detroit's DJ 3000 has always operated at the futuristic crossroads between techno and electro, and his latest Ep does that again but also comes with heavyweight remixes by pioneers Aux 88 and DJ Stingray 313. The Motor City's rich musical heritage shines through here right from the off: 'Waiting In The Dark (Midnight mix)' is a grinding and mechanical electro-techno jam, then Aux 88 delivers a bass-heavy, machine-driven remix while DJ Stingray 313 brings high-velocity precision. DJ 3000's own 'Voyager (The Journey Mix)' is then a dusty deep house groove layered up with star gazing chords that slowly unfold with a sense of beauty.

Review: Keith Tucker aka DJ K-1 is back with more of his stripped-back electro magic, complete with trademark vocoder flair. His 'My Name Is DJ K-1' is a six-tracker EP that is reminiscent of his classic K-1 Agenda era on Direct Beat. The original mix here leans into Kraftwerk-style futurism while DMX Krew's remix adds a darker, sample-heavy twist full of Motor City-style techno and bass brilliance. The 'Beat Mix' is pure looped funk so is perfect for seamless blends while the 'Detroit Jit Mi' offers a full vocal rap with local flavor. The goodness keeps on coming with the 'SPOCK Mix' and its eerie, spacey strings, and the 'NAVI Mix' is a hypnotic bonus beat version soaked in synth puddles and absorbing rhythmic tension. Irresistible stuff.

Review: Some may argue that Dimitri From Paris and Tom Moulton have already provided the definitive remixes of Ron Hall, the Muthafunkaz and Marc Evans' 2006 gem "The Way You Love Me". This Glitterbox 12", which features alternative versions of those two legendary reworks, proves that they're wrong. Dimitri's "Glitterbox Retouch" of his Philadelphia International-inspired TSOP Version is a little more focused and tightly edited than its predecessor, but naturally incredibly similar. It's Moulton's "Philly Regrooved Mix", though, that's the real stunner. A near perfect example of Moulton's classic mixing skills, it sees the original disco mixer give space to each instrumental solo before unleashing the now oh-so-familiar vocal. The result is 13 minutes of unashamed disco bliss.

Review: The always excellent Minimal Wave presents a rare EP from Greek electronic pioneers In Trance 95 here. Alex Machairas and Nik Veliotis formed the duo in 1988 and very much helped define Greece's early electronic scene with their minimal synth and EBM-inspired sound, all of it usually marked by analogue warmth, hypnotic melodies and a futuristic sensibility. This release captures their innovative spirit and cult legacy across six unreleased tracks recorded between the late 80s and early 90s in Athens. It sounds magnificent and is a long-overdue glimpse into their visionary archive for new fans, or a fine reminder of their roots for those who have always been tuned in.

Review: The cultured Presagi label returns with a previously unreleased 1989 recording by Miami freestyle icon Laurie Miller, who made her name as a solo artist as well as spending time with 80s group Expose. The wonderful 'True Love' is a shimmering slice of vintage freestyle that is now seeing the light of day for the first time, and has been lovingly restored from the original master tapes and officially licensed from the artist. The B-side features a fresh dub reinterpretation by Tapes aka Jackson Bailey who lends the track a spacious, analogue warmth and makes this a crucial pick-up.

Review: Broken beat legends Nautilus return with a futuristic teaser for their upcoming 2026 studio album, and on this evidence, it's going to be superb. The first single reimagines a legendary anime soundtrack with their signature groove and features Japanese singer and sanshin virtuoso Anna Sato, whose vocals elevate the track to a new dimension. The release is completed by Berlin-based DJ and producer Delfonic, a well-known disco and house don and label head, renowned for his deep club remixes and praised by Gilles Peterson. Review: 'Move It Or Lose It' isn't just the name of the latest release from Brit producer Joseph Nugent aka Papa Nugs, it's a mantra for our time. Emboldening Big Saldo's Chunkers imprint with an uncaged, high-octane batch of "house" cuts, this is the label's first release for 2025, dialling in to the label's signature bandwidth-filling "chunkers" sound. Rave-ready FX are the order of the moment, as flashes of early trance, progressive and hard house motifs, and Ibizan sample banks all hear Nugs truncate old-school references into a contemporary hip house come rave-breaks template. 'Turn it Down''s irresistible hook, "we're here to have a good time," has to be the bugler's choice moment.

Review: A bumper package of six - count 'em - reworkings of disco grooves by Scruscru, offering a myriad of new takes on classic sounds. Beno, Bernardo Campos's 'Space Gruv' opens proceedings with a luxurious, soulful edge, while Tree Threes' 'Sunshine Miss' coasts along gracefully with more of a beefed up jazz house vibe. Manuel Kane's 'Disco Visions' throws more beautifully jazzy chord shapes and adds a devastating diva vocal for a proper peak time feel, Immersif's 'La Tournee Des Phares' employs more of a broken beat shuffle and 'Rebecca's Mystery Mood' by Punky Wash revolves around Latin beats and lilting guitar lines. Finally comes arguably the EP's jazziest moment of all, Justnique's 'Elevator Music', with some mighty impressive tinkling of the ivories. Authentic, gorgeous sounds overlaid on some sturdy 4/4 templates - pure DJ heaven.

Review: Tribute To House Masters launches its homage to talented producers from the foundational days of house and disco with a first volume featuring some real heavyweights. Each of the originals has been remixed by St David who begins with swinging and delightful deep house depths on 'The Underground.' Review: In 1985, rapper Tricky Tee (Edward Yates) pinned an unlikely staple to the great door of hip electro, decreeing that all those to follow him would take a bow whenever he sashayed into the room. 'Johnny The Fox' was his first release for Sleeping Bag Records, who now release it in fullest restored glory - this was the label founded by none other than indie cello superstar Arthur Russell and music mogul William Socolov, crossing between disco, stylistically crossing between avant-garde songwriting and paradise-garage house - and served to indent his name on the map in highly visible, permanent ink. Containing samples of The Kay-Gees and Thin Lizzy, Tee's voice is steeped in a short delay, a timeless technique lending the human voice a smeared-out, mechanoid feel.

These self-styled groove adventurers remain radically open to the sound, thanks to their stylistic touchstone, 70s funk, and its diachronic conduction of future styles. Recorded on tape in a top Parisian studio, their third record Trois brims with trifect textures, bold phrasing, and soaring choral waves. Mathieu Edouard's precise drumming is glued to the spot by Erwan Loeffel's plaited percussion, all the while Laurent Guillet's fingertips and Florian Pellissier's splayed hands make the best uses of Fender Rhodes, axe and Minimoog.

Review: Beckie Bell's 1980 debut has long circulated in fragments i a 12" here, a collector's tip there. This full reissue by Strut gathers it all in one place. Recorded after Bell's move from New York to Paris, it offers a studio-built vision of disco shaped by session musicians and arranged with subtlety. 'Super Queen' sets the tone with its patient build and clipped vocal phrasing. 'So Many Ways' and 'Magic Lady' follow a slower logic, driven more by mood than immediacy. 'Music Madness', the record's most played track, draws attention with its syncopated synths and layered percussion, though its energy remains low-slung. Bell's voice rarely reaches for spectacle. Her lines sit just above the groove, steady and self-assured. On 'Johnnies Home' and 'What You Need I Can Bring', there's no need for dramatic turns i the performances work because nothing is pushed. The reissue comes with a clean remaster by The Carvery and includes contributions from Arthur Young, Patrick Cowley and Jacob Desvarieux. What emerges is not a lost classic but something quieter: a well-assembled record with a clear internal logic, shaped by a moment where disco didn't yet need to shout.

Review: Nearly half a century after The Glow Of Love lit up dancefloors from Bologna to New York, Change return with Embrace: a sleek continuation of their post-hiatus revival, carrying the modern Italo dance group's name after early designs to release it as a Tanya Michelle Smith solo project. Produced by Stefano Colombo with input from founding maestro Mauro Malavasi, who also oversaw the title and artwork, the record builds on 2018's Love 4 Love with a dozen tracks folding disco, soul, and modern boogie into a freshly polished polygon of sprightly designer disco. While just 500 copies of the vinyl edition exist, the CD edition here exists in droves, and is sure to set any missed trick right.

Review: Alien Communications has sent out some otherworldly transmissions to cult electro talents ERP, Client_03, Plant43 and Carl Finlow and in return they have been sent a series of killer new tunes for this bumper double 12". ERP's 'Telenovela' I first to cast off into the cosmos with solar winds gently blowing over kinetic drums and far-sighted celestial pads. MOY brings some wonky acid turbulence to the trip on 'Pale Nimbus' and Juno favourite Carl Finlow gets a little grubby with his gloopy, sordid electro wobbler 'Woven'. Another titan of the scene, Radioactive Man, comes through with a winky gem that harks back to Two Lone Swordsmen on 'Space Junk', with many other essentials from the likes of DMX Crew and Domenic Cappello making this utterly essential.
