Review: Cafe Tacvba's Re was released in July 1994 but remains one of the most groundbreaking albums in Latin rock. The sprawling double LP produced by Gustavo Santaolalla fused punk, norteNo, funk and traditional Mexican sounds into a daring, genre-defying opus. Tracks like 'El Baile y El Salon' and 'La Ingrata' became almost instant anthems, while deeper cuts elsewhere explored death, identity and national pride. Often compared to The White Album by The Beatles, Re delivered cohesion through diversity and elevated Mexican rock to new artistic heights. Thirty years on, it's a cult classic and cultural cornerstone and is essential listening that reshaped rock en espaNol and inspired generations who came after.

Review: Country and folk singer/songwriter Mary Chapin Carpenter is making up for lost time. Having left it five years between albums, the multi-Grammy winner is now onto her second album of 2025, having released a collaborative album, Looking for the Thread, back in January. Chapin's glistening oeuvre, which stretches back to her Steve Buckingham-produced debut in 1987, is bolstered significantly with this new offering, too. 'Bitter Ender', the first single, manages to sound intimate and widescreen at the same time: there's plenty of polish to make it a daytime radio hit, whilst never losing sight of the fact the Americana genre is principally about storytelling and she holds your attention throughout. Meanwhile, 'Home Is A Song' is more downtempo and strives off the beautiful interlocking of simple piano chords and intricate arpeggio guitar. The chorus harmonies are delightful and heartfelt. A solid entry by an all-time great of the genre.

Review: The Cimarons were pioneers of UK reggae and were formed by Jamaican teenagers in a London bus shelter in 1967. They broke barriers as the country's first home-grown reggae band and were beloved in towns like Huddersfield during the 1970s. Their journey from struggle to recognition has been celebrated in a documentary and this powerful new album, which features 11 fresh roots recordings with Spanish producer Roberto Sanchez and his A-Lone Ark crew. Highlights include the haunting 'Ship Took Us Away' and a rework of 'Morning Sun,' which they originally played on in 1970. The vinyl comes complete with lyrics and rare archival photos.

Review: Following the success of the first volume, The History of Italo Disco returns with a new edition dedicated to one year, 1983, which is thought amongst those who know to be one of the genre's most defining 12-month periods. Curated once again with legendary Italo tastemaker Flemming Dalum, the compilation highlights the era when Italo disco began making serious waves across European charts. It comes with early hits from future stars like Martinelli, Doctor's Cat, Savage, Fun Fun and Den Harrow and they all capture the sound of a genre on the rise. As a bonus, this limited edition includes an exclusive Flemming Dalum mega-mix and liner notes that provide deeper context for the selections.

Review: Released in 1967, Open marked a daring debut for Brian Auger and The Trinity with soulful vocals from Julie Driscoll. The album embodies London's vibrant late-60s scene with jazz, r&b, pop and psychedelia all reflecting the era's genre-crossing spirit. Auger's jazz roots shine on tracks like 'In and Out' and 'Isola Natale' while Driscoll brings emotional depth to covers of Otis Redding and Aretha Franklin hits. This is an always eclectic and adventurous album that combines virtuosic musicianship, surreal humour and heartfelt soul. Now regarded as a cult classic, it had a huge influence on British jazz fusion and progressive scenes.

Review: For many Italo disco fans, Dyva is a legendary, in fact almost mythical, name. Famed primarily for their iconic track 'Oh Mama Tonight,' which was actually released only as a rare promo single, the duo's best work became a holy grail for collectors and true enthusiasts. After just three official releases, they seemingly disappeared until the early 2000s, when Finnish Italo fan Kimmo Salo found them in Italy. This reunion led to a new chapter for Dyva's founders, Roberto Calzolari and Massimo Traversoni, who revived their 80s demos and created fresh material. Spanning 1986 to 2024, this album has it all so is a welcome time capsule.

Review: This is Eels' most immediately rewarding album Mark Oliver Everett, also known by his stage name E, was on miracle form: it's like some kind of divine intervention played a role in him being able to lay these stone cold bangers. Of the hits,'Souljacker (part 1)' is the most striking with its menacing, memorable riff that adds edge to any scene. Film buffs among us will know it from Wim Wenders' 'Twelve Miles To Trona' short film (2002) where it's a beautiful fit. Another highlight is the haunting 'Bus Stop Boxer', which is intense and emotionally charged in its depiction of the violence of loneliness. For 'Dog Faced Boy', it's been said that PJ Harvey collaborator John Parish wrote most of the music in Bristol and then E added lyrics and other embellishments when they were in LA together - few co-writes come out this well.

Review: Los Angeles-based psych-garage rockers Frankie & the Witch Fingers are one of the most thrillingly frantic bands since the Dead Kennedys and are on red hot form with this their eight studio album - yep, not a bad return considering that they only formed in 2013. 'TV Baby' is like a more frantic Ty Segall circa his Emotional Mugger album; 'Dead Silence' weaves between amphetamine-fuelled glam-tinged punk and transcendent psych rock whig outs. It's as if the band have not left any significant neo psych album of the past 15 years slip their net and plucked the best bits, whilst injecting plenty of their own eccentricities. It's a glorious racket and cacophonous enough and fun enough to positively disrupt any room you crank it up in.

Review: American Philip Glass's Music with Changing Parts from 1970 marked a turning point in minimalist composition. Built on eight staves of repeating melodic patterns, the piece allows musicians to freely choose and switch parts at specific cues, which results in striking shifts in instrumentation. Though composed entirely of eighth notes, early rehearsals revealed unexpected sustained tones and psychoacoustic resonances created by layered repetition. Glass embraced this effect, later incorporating optional long notes into the score. This recording explores that idea further by overdubbing short and sustained notes to make for a utopian version of the piece. It is hypnotic and ever-changing yet constant.

Review: 30th Century Records reissues Gnarls Barkley's 2008 sophomore LP, The Odd Couple, for the first time on wax since its original release, when it didn't quite make the mark many might have expected, though ah since become one of those under-the-radar gems. While the duo of Cee-Lo Green and Danger Mouse rose to fame with the massive hit 'Crazy,' this album revealed a more nuanced, experimental side. Staying true to their cinematic r&b roots, The Odd Couple refines their sound with sharper songwriting and polished production. Highlights include the gospel-synth swirl of 'Going On' and the frantic funk energy of 'Run (I'm A Natural Disaster).' It's an underrated follow-up that showed Gnarls Barkley was more than just a one-hit wonder.

Review: Brooklyn-based jangle pop-rock/shoegaze sorts Hotline TNT's third album is their most assured and sonically diverse offering yet. Anderson, previously of Vancouver duo Weed, recorded the two previous albums all himself but through more fortunate circumstances acquired four musicians who he's welcomed to be part of the process the whole way. Moreover, Wisconsin producer Amos Pitsch, who runs Crutch of Memory studio where they recorded, played a big role and this collective effort has yielded stellar results, marking this record out as one of the key albums of the new wave of American shoegaze, no matter how much the band probably bristle at the pigeonhole.

Review: Recorded live in the Hypnose Room at La Nature 2023, Italian sound artist, live performer, DJ and independent researcher Katatonic Silentio's debut on Fleur Sauvage allows you to relive a riveting improvisational set across two 12"s. The sounds shift between cinematic ambient, abstract experimentation and textured noise in four parts, each of them rigid with tension that builds, breaks and reforms in unpredictable ways. Deep bass swells and granular distortions drift through fragile moments of calm to make for an unstable atmosphere that feels like you're lost in a vast factory after dark, and the hum of the day's industry still echoes through the building. Wonderful.

Review: The hugely prolific and endlessly touring Australian rock band King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard's latest is Rave Gizzard: Live in San Francisco 2024 via Reverberation Appreciation Society, a hefty triple-LP capturing their legendary first-ever full synth set. It was recorded live at The Regency Ballroom on November 6, 2024, and is a nine-track set with technicolour performances of tracks like 'Theia,' 'Gilgamesh' and 'Extinction' all reimagined with razor-sharp synth textures. It was an epic show lapped up by fans who revelled in the overwhelming bass and immersive, rave-like energy, all of which is conveyed when listening back. This limited-edition bootleg is a document of the band's adventurous leap into synth-driven psychedelia that is sure to swiftly sell out.

Remastered from the original analogue, this deeply personal work blends Lavoe's signature salsa fire with innermost and raw emotion. Standout tracks like 'Loco,' 'Ella mintio' and 'Escarcha' speak of a vulnerable artist confronting heartbreak and public scrutiny. Produced by Willie Colon (whose own 'Set Fire' is a Latin house classic) and backed by a stellar cast, Strikes Back earned Lavoe his only GRAMMYr nomination and affirmed this record as a vital piece of salsa history as well as key to Lavoe's enduring legacy.

For the first time, these classic tracks are available on vinyl, which is literally music to the ears of fans of Eastern European underground sounds. The band is a trio of artistic kindred spirits who united in 2014 with Ivo Stoyadinov Charlie on guitar, synths and programming alongside Sibylla Seraphim, who brings her haunting vocals and synth work to the mix. Together, they craft a moody, atmospheric sound that is distantly lo-fi, with prowling and sleazy guitars that Andrew Weatherall would love, chugging dark disco groves and tripped-out machine soul and wiry electronics.

Review: Born and raised in Cairo, Egypt, Maurice Louca is part of The Dwarfs of East Agouza with Alan Bishop and experimental composer Sam Shalabi, but also has an assured solo sound. He explores it here on Bar?y (Fera), a new album that is a hypnotic melding of polyrhythms and acoustic textures crafted over four years from the essence of a 2019 solo set. It really took bloom in a Cairo studio with longtime collaborators Ayman Asfour on violin, Khaled Yassine on percussion and Rosa Brunello on double bass. Louca's microtonal guitars weave with synths and ensemble interplay to create vivid synth-acoustic layers and guest stars Nancy Mounir and oud player Hazem Shaheen deepen the sonic richness, all guided by adventurous collaboration and resulting in an alluring, meticulously crafted work.

Review: Legendary composer Ennio Morricone's soundtrack for The Good, the Bad and the Ugly remains a towering achievement in film music. Effortlessly blending operatic grandeur with raw Western grit, it fuses whistles, guitars, choral howls and sharp percussion into one of cinema's most iconic themes. Each character receives a unique motif, Wagnerian in concept but rooted in 1960s pop flair. Tracks like 'The Ecstasy of Gold' are emotional epics on their own but really elevate the cinematic scenes into legend. Morricone didn't just score the film-he shaped its soul and this new limited-edition reissue is a great way to relive it.

Review: Crafted over five years and during several of life's larger milestones and the woes of the pandemic, Infinity Mirrors is a deeply reflective jazz album exploring self-discovery through love, anxiety, hope and acceptance. It is the world of South London-born and raised multi-faceted producer, composer and DJ Hector Plimmer, who broke out a decade ago and here blends past and present experiences into a richly intimate world. The record is packed with collaborations with artists like Laura Misch, Andrew Ashong and Tawiah who help weave soulful melodies, ambient textures and jazz sensibilities. It's a profound and essential new take on jazz with a distinctive London edge.

Review: Munich-based artist Lindsey Wang aka Polygonia's new album takes the form of 12 vivid dreamscapes and carefully interwoven world-building with dynamic rhythms moving things along. This inter-genre trip explores ambient, deep techno, downtempo and leftfield electronica and though accomplished, balances playfulness with mystery. As a multi-instrumentalist, Wang layers her own voice plus sax, flute, violin and percussion to bring organic warmth to surreal sonic spaces. From propulsive techno cuts like 'Soul Reflections' to ethereal explorations like 'Crystal Valley,' each sound reflects the shifting moods of the subconscious. Emotional, experimental and deeply personal, this is a fine capturing of the strange beauty of the dream world.

Review: Saint Abdullah and Eomac is a long-distance hook-up of NYC-based Iranian-Canadian brothers Mohammad and Mehdi Mehrabani and Irish producer Ian McDonnell. Their new record is an evocation of diasporic memory infused with archival Persian pop and raw experimental drums. Bridging cultures and eras as they go, they blur the line between homage and innovation and rework iconic melodies through fractured sampling, SP404 grit, and textured digital precision. Collaborations with Jason Nazary, Aria Rostami, mHz and Raheel Khan deepen its emotionally rich, politically charged appeal and result in a bold document of hybrid musical identities.

Review: The UK's James Shinra's Meteorites series was released digitally between 2023 and 2024 and sparked a revival of the braindance and experimental scenes. Now the music has been compiled into Analogical Force, a 12-track collection with half of the cuts reimagined for 2025 and pressed to wax. Together as one, the tracks feel like transmissions from a parallel sonic universe compacted into punchy melodic bursts. Razor-sharp percussion and textured distortion drive the proceedings: acid-wrapped 'Blade,' kinetic beats on 'Drift.Wood' and ambient depth in 'Blurr' all standout and more highlights include the haunting 'Anomikk (2025 Rework)' and glitch-funk of 'Cntroller (2025 Rework)' which spiral into futuristic dimensions.

Review: Toronto-based artist Meg Remy, who performs as U.S. Girls and has been releasing music with 4AD since 2015, is one of the most acclaimed artists to emerge from the Canadian city's eclectic underground scene. And whilst the Illinois-raised artist's previous studio album - Bless This Mess - was heavily inspired by electronic pop, this time around Remy has embraced Americana, having clobbered together a band of Nashville musicians to record. And you know what? It's utterly spellbinding. Among the highlights is the lead single, 'Bookend', where she sounds like Dusty Springfield. That the emotions here are so palpable is perhaps testament to it being an ode to a dear friend of hers: the 12 minute ballad, co-written with the Edwin de Goeji, is dedicated to Power Trip frontman Riley Gale, from whom life was taken too soon. RIP.

Review: All good things must come to an end, and so it is that after ten acclaimed volumes, the Praise Poems series bows out with its 11th and final instalment. This one dives into the world of late 70s and early 80s power pop. From the unreleased gem 'Real Proof' by The Nails to the long-lost tracks by Fingerprints, Naked Rush, Fritz, Blue Rain and Holidaye, this compilation unearths rare energy. Highlights include The Scam's 'Don't Quit' produced by future Spotify exec William Garrett, and a track by Animal Logic, whose band name was famously bought by The Police's Stewart Copeland. A fitting finale.

Review: Analog Africa has repressed the highly valued and long since sold-out Congo Funk! Sound Madness From The Shores Of The Mighty Congo River: Kinshasa/Brazzaville 1969-1982. It is a compilation that superbly shows off the raw energy and funkiness of the Congolese rumba scene. This is the country that spawned such as legendary bands as African Jazz, OK Jazz and African Fiesta and it is said that the concert ahead of the legendary Rumble in the Jungle boxing match between Muhammad Ali vs George Foreman is what really set young hopefully musicians on their paths, after they saw James Brown play live. The story of those artists and the labels they released on in the ensuing years is what is told so well here across four sides of vital wax.
