Tin Of Worms
Westway
Review: Autoreply do the record buying public a favour and give Baby Ford's Tin Of Worms 12" another repress, this time on yellow wax. Baby Ford has been making electronic music since the late 1980s and is regarded by most as one of the key players in the nascent UK acid house scene. His entry into the Autoreply stable is a classy, versatile two tracker. The title track showcases crisp, tight linear drum programming - with ribcage shaking sub bass and supernatural synths which undulate over its eight minute cycle, displaying the original principles of minimal techno alongside forward thinking sound design. On the flip you'll find "Westway", originally recorded on Ford's now defunct hardware set up and mastered from DAT. This track conjours images of smoky late night jazz clubs with its smooth piano chords and strings that seem to float in an out of the mix- set starter, nightclub techno lesson, afterparty showpiece; the choice is yours...

Snakes & Ladders
Last Call
Curfew
Review: With fewer appearances on wax in the last few years, it's always a cause for celebration when Baby Ford crops up with a slew of new wares. This time he's doing the business for the Ugold Series, and he's in fine fettle continuing to explore the minimal abstractions that have characterised his output since becoming aligned with the Perlon imprint in the 00's. "Snakes & Ladders" even sports the trademark weirdo vocal treatment that you would only find on a BF record, while the subtlety of the melodics slowly creeps up on you through repeated listens. The micro shuffle of the beat itself takes no time to work out, so sublime it is in its simplicity. "Last Call" comes on more spaced out, with a whisper of 90s leftfield techno about its disembodied machine bleeps.

Tea Party (4:50)
On The Floor (6:04)
The Healing (6:16)
Word For Word (4:16)
Review: Legendary minimal - and acid house before that - pioneer Baby Ford very much set the blueprint for the genre back in the late 90s, both solo and with The Ifach Collective, who featured Ian Loveday, Mark Broom and Thomas Melchior (amongst others). Now they are reminding us of the greatness of that work with the first in a series of reissues coming in 2023. These tunes were originally put out back on the legendary Klang Elektronik in 2000. First up is 'Tea Party' by Eon, M-Core, and Baby Ford, an ice-cold rolling dub. 'On The Floor' with Mark Broom gets more percussive and then comes a solo cut from Baby Ford, 'The Healing' which is as heady as can be and finally 'Word For Word' featuring Cheru Amadi layers up slithers of silvery percussion and cuddly bass into dubbed-out tech heaven.

For How Long
Review: Baby Ford and Zip continue a fruitful partnership with some uber cool, super deep minimal techno on Pal SL records. "Clean Hands" sees a hushed and soulful vocal wafting over atmospheric synth scratches, ultra low end bass and deft high end clicks and shuffles. "For How Long" is even more reduced, letting the space between the sparse sounds say as much as the sounds themselves. Truly unique sounds from this talented pair.

Automated Reply (6:18)
OOO (6:28)
Review: London-based Leo Picking, better known as Baby Rollen, presents his latest release on Not For You, following previous releases on Feelings Worldwide, Magic Carpet, and his own Slump Recordings. The two tracks on the release are inspired by retro sounds, showcasing Picking's ability to create dancefloor weapons that blend different eras of electronic music.

On the A-side, 'Automatic Reply' delivers uplifting trance euphoria, complete with strobe-inducing moments that will transport you to another dimension. The track's infectious energy is sure to get bodies moving and hands in the air. Meanwhile, the flip side brings us 'OOO', a journey through breakbeats, acid, and classic Stateside house sounds, all masterfully blended into one cohesive and infectious track. Overall, Baby Rollen continues to impress with his unique style and diverse musical influences on this latest release.

Review: Easily one of the most exciting labels operating in minimal circles in these times, Pleasure Zone deliver the goods once again with the hypnotic charms of newcomer Bacauanu. "Caiarna" may feature some peppy beats, but the delay-drenched synth lines and delicate piano fills are fine-tuned for psychedelic impact. "Cavara" pushes the drums to the front and keeps the chords submerged, but still the sound palette is rich and detailed in all the right places. "Demijloc" finishes things off with the most stripped-down offering, getting heavy on the bass to embark on an introspective journey into subliminal dance music of the highest order.

Back In Black (7:28)
Review: Master minimalist Thomas Melchior is back with a new release on his Aspect Music imprint under the alias Back In Black. Although this is only a single sided release, there's all you need right here. The eponymous release features all the hallmarks of Melchior's singular sound: from its rich tapestry of ethereal - almost arcane- tapestry of elements reaching near spiritual moments, underpinned by meditative and clipped rhythm programming. Be prepared for yet another altogether magickal experience from the legend.

Review: It's smooth and silky grooves all the way with French label Berg Audio. Now up to a fifth transmission, it is Badeo who comes thorough with three original tunes. The is his debut release, and an impressive one at that. 'Facade' is just well pitched, spaced out tech house with smeared pads and rubbery drums. 'Controller' gets a little more minimal and textured, with layers of hits, synth and underlapping bass pulling you in deep. Icelandic dub legend Thor remixes 'Facade' into a 5am, dubbed out techno roller and 'Visionay' is similarly warm and atmospheric.

Review: Evan Baggs has always been one of those low key but highly rated artists that the heads lap up. It has been a while since we heard a new offering from him but time has serve him well, because this new one on Faith Beat is a perfect fusion of house, tech and techno. 'Ideas & Concepts' opens up with silvery slithers of perc, icy drums and grinding grooves overlaid with stiff vocals. 'Elixir' is another crunchy tech house cut and the DJ Qu remix then goes deep and dark on twitchy pads and rugged beats. 'Neutral Zone' closes down in cyborg fashion.

Review: Lazy Hartz Club member Evan Baggs delivers a sultry three-tracker on behalf of the Tokyo-based party crew Cabaret Recordings, and it's quality deep house vibes from start to finish. "Not A Story" flexes its muscle to and fro with a whooshing bassline and intricate atmospheric patters, while on the flip, "Blossom" takes a more jacking approach to work around the growling low-end beneath, and "Ziegensicher" rattles its percussion with a distinct freneticism to complete a solid, pulsating thirty minutes of sound.

Review: In case you need bringing pop to speed, Locus is a brand new record label from the same vital team behind FUSE London. The sounds are a little quicker than those on the main label, with a future feel, electronic funk and cool to spare. Josh Baker takes the reins this time with the glossy vocal tech of 'Slippers All Summer' complete with nice cosmic pads. 'Fascinating' is a more jittery groove that tease and please with razor sharp hi hats and daubs of synth, then 'Jaffa' picks up the pace with acid bass, rave whistles and scintillating drum work. 'More Than Micro' closes on a nice heads down deep house vibe for the calming and late night hours.

Four strong cuts on "EP Y": from the ethereal hypnotism of A side cut "In Two Minds" followed by the tough rolling funk attack of "Barge Deluxe" and its subtle French touch (think Djebali!). Review: Matt Radio Slave Edwards has been in fine form in 2010, releasing everything from club friendly Strictly Rhythm edits to ambient headphone music under his Machine pseudonym. Here we see the Berlin based DJ turn Simon Baker's "Too Slow" into a chugging, raw house anthem, with razor sharp hi-hats bouncing keeping the groove tight until some outrageously deep pads enter the fray. Edwards keeps the fire burning throughout, thanks to the deft use of vocal snatches and moody atmospherics. Limited vinyl only run of 300, so once it's gone, it's gone. Review: Jungle Generation is the third release on Outcast Planet, signed by its resident DJ Bakked. All the tracks are dance-floor oriented - characterized by dynamic drums, acid and trancy melodies matched together with a deep soul. Acid meets slap bass on 'Crush9', while 'Zion' describes the Kingdom of the Lamb through the mode of washy, spitty snares and glassy pads. All tunes serve to satiate, leaving you more or less chloro-filled with energy, much like the emblematic sunflower on the inner label.

He serves up the hypnotic open-air bliss of 'Visuality' which is as bass-driven and ethereal as you like it, receiving a rework by Bucharest up-and-comer Direkt up next. He takes the track into tripped-out territory, that is just perfect for getting weird at the afterhours. Remember
Review: After launching into Memory Box with aplomb on the deadly Acid Stomp 12", Robin Ball steps up on the London-based imprint once again with the saucy tones of his latest four track EP. "Drop It Down Low" and its accompanying dub mix are classy twists on the tech house formula that lean towards old-skool methods while keeping the sleaze factor ramped up high. "Remember" takes a more tripped out tribal approach, with the "Vibes mix" providing a more subtle twist to the warm, melodic undulations of the full fat version. It's an EP loaded with personality and flair for sophisticated dancefloors.

The pair deliver crisp textures that meet the driving momentum of their electro-influenced sound design, evoking a sense of cerebral euphoria. 'Crush' expertly balances the squelchy, ice-cold synths of electro with the deep propulsion of acid house, while also drawing upon the hypnotic atmosphere of techno. The result is a carefully crafted journey through nocturnal body movement, full of rhythm and intrigue. Review: For Holding Hands chief Desert Sound Colony, dark, eyes down, bass heavy grooves are his first love when it comes to electronic music. He created a label with a slightly deeper angle to accommodate this sort of thing named Holding Hands Submerged. Previous EPs have come from Yosh and Mariin, and this one comes from Washington D.C. based James Bangura - who presented an awesome EP on Mister Saturday Night earlier this year. For The People features another collection of off-kilter cuts by the rising producer: from the introspective dub house of the title track, to the contorted techno/bass hybrid of 'Target Velocity' or the hypnotising post dubstep antics of 'What Happened To Us All' - Bangura is an artist we're definitely keeping our eyes on this year.

Review: The always tasteful Half Baked crew looks to one of their own for this fresh slice of delicious minimal. Sam Bangura was a new young resident for the party back in 2018 and since then has really honed his own sound. It's laid bare here across four fine cuts, with opener 'Range Finder' serving up bristling drum machine grooves and cheeky basslines overlaid with cosmic chords. 'Axel's Limp' is a brilliantly vibrant melodic overload with scintillating drums and plenty of neon colours. 'Bugbear' gets more gritty with a standout bassline powering forwards rugged tech house and 'How Are U Feeling?' then gets spaced out and slick.

Henry Hyde - "Wading Through" (6:52)
Review: As the London-based NorthSouth Records enter their fifth year they also arrive at their tenth release. After a run of artist EPs NSR returns to the split format to deliver four tracks from two of the label's founding members; Sam Bangura and Harry McCanna. On the North side we hear Sam's first cuts pressed to vinyl for the imprint. Shining with his characteristic sound of bubbling melodies, refined grooves and tied together with a growling low end, 'Jaspe's Groove' and 'Marble Leg' are two driving tunes aimed straight for those facemelting late-night moments.

Heading down to the South side we catch Harry working again under his alias Henry Hyde. 'More Days Inside' starts things off on something of a mellow tip, whilst still being a functional track for the dance floor. 'Wading Through' on the other hand offers up shuffling percussion, spacey synth plucks and one of Harry's signature squirmy, swarming basslines. It's an EP that showcases some of the signature NorthSouth sounds and who better for it to come from than two of its own.

Dolphin Kid (Jon McMillion Sea World mix)
Review: The Nuearth Kitchen label haven't put out a lot of records, but everything they do release is always worthy of closer investigation - see that killer Madteo 12" last year for proof. Their latest project is their most in-depth to date, with Parisian duo Baptiste & Pierre Colleu remixed by a cast of talent. Part one features the duo's original of Dolphin Kid, a suitably Gallic piece of throbbing techno which is a potential World Unknown anthem in the making. Coyote takes it into the realms of percolating Balearica with his remix, while the unstoppable Willie Burns delivers a haunted house rework sounding like the kind of ethereal material that you'd expect from his kraut-inspired Black Deer material. Finally, Jon McMillian's "Sea World" mix takes things into psychedelic minimal territory, as fluid synth textures flow across delicate rhythms.

490 (12:28)
Review: If the weekly arrivals at Juno are any indicator, it's a rich and plentiful time for fans of the Romanian sound with so many interesting artists helping to push the minimal genre forwards. Barac Nicolae belongs at the forefront of this movement and he's been in fine fettle so far in 2016, with a recent contribution to the Rawax Aira series a particular favourite here. It's Cluj-based Midi Records (affiliated with the popular venue of the same name) that score the latest batch from Barac in the shape of the Seen and Unseen EP. Whilst they may adopt a slightly darker tone than recent Barac material, both "490" and "September by Touch" are slow cooked under the Romanian's signature jagged groove.

Enchanting polyrhythms are undoubtedly the order of the day across The First Thing EP, with the Bucharest-based producer's usual knack for eloquent track titles as well. On the A-side, we have 'Different Point Of Structure' which is a driving and energetic main room workout with subtle dub techno influences and utilising the hypnotic qualities of previous work, while the B-side cut 'The First Thing You Hear' is a more stripped back and minimalistic affair reaching near tribal moments, but this one is definitely more suited to heady afterhours moments.

Pavane (12:07)
Review: Having launched the label with two fine 12" singles last year, Barac returns to his Moment imprint for the first time since. This time round, the Romanian producer has joined forces with established French composer Lyonel Bauchet. The latter has a reputation for creating masterful electronic symphonies using vintage analogue gear. These modern classical roots are much in evidence on the brilliant, 12-minute "Buchla Market", where Bauchet's intoxicating, almost Arabic electronics cluster around Barac's tension-building, minimal techno rhythms. They're perhaps less evident on the slightly spacey - but more percussively chunky - "Pavane", but it's still a fine chunk of atmospheric, late night techno.

Review: Last year's Variety Of Different Feelings album confirmed Bucharest producer Barac to be a rising star of the Romanian minimal scene, so it makes sense for him to further establish his profile with a new record label. It also makes sense for Barac to be involved in the first release, with Moment 001 consisting of two collaborative productions with compatriot Chiriches Vincentiu Iulian. With both stretching past the 12 minute mark, it's evident these tracks are the result of some fruitful time in the studio between the pair and "In Colour" features some particularly delightful musical touches that really bring the production an extra sense of life.

Back Up Queen (808 Fake remix)
Review: For a relative newcomer, Nathan Barato has slotted right into the Rekids vibe with his first appearance on the label. "Back Up Queen" is defined by a brilliantly sarcastic vocal performance that sends up the diva culture that may or may not have its sights set on the dance music world. A rude bassline and solid tech-house bump do just the right amount of work in the background while a simple looped melody provides a contrast to the RuPaul-esque ramblings. Oliver$ does a serviceable job with his safe and steady remix, leaving it to 808 Fake to do away with the vocal and create a deeper mood driven by an insistent hat.

Review: Vox Populi Records head Frederic Scharf travelled to Turkey on an eight day trip. His team collected live recordings, jam sessions and field recordings and here are the results of it. Istanbul producer Baris K is up first with a truly majestic track that is "Chapter I" sounding like something Ricardo Villalobos would stand up and notice. Montreal's Valentin Stip appears on the same side of the record with "Chapter II" utilising more of the lovely exotic instrumentation incorporated into a smooth minimal house excursion. On the flip "Chapter III" by Berlin's Volkan Akin is the real standout on here; a percussion driven workout taking in the sounds of a busy street market, allowing you to imagine yourself on a motorcycle ride through the city. Finally "Chapter IV" from Tim Karbon gets its groove on in a nice rolling fashion complete with emotive strings and tripped out samples that will easily work a peak time dancefloor.

Review: After five years spent drifting between labels, James Barnsley finally found a regular home in 2015. Ever since, he's periodically released EPs on Vessel, with each successive EP being more impressive than the last. Predictably, his latest EP for the label is another winner. There are two Barnsley originals to choose from: "Time", where spacey but dubbed-out synth motifs cluster around a nagging bassline and gently pulsating peak-time tech-house groove, and the jazzy and more expansive deep house warmth of "Forgiveness". Cab Drivers turns in a delicious dub house rework of the latter, while tech-house veteran D'Julz serves up a far more driving and mind-altering take on "Time".

Review: The wonderfully unpredictable Comeme label drops the long awaited Ariola EP from Barnt which brandishes four cuts of oddball, left of centre grooves. "Tunsten" is all over the place, featuring out of time drums and sped up, grinding riffs climaxing to the sound of mangled fog horns, before it finally sinks into an acid bath. The title track is less disturbed, with a tripped out synth bouncing around the sparse, hollowed out rhythm. "Stac" sees Barnt remain in off the wall mode: this time the drums are dissected and reconstructed, underscoring a brooding bassline. Finally, "Tunsten (Melopella)" offers a more contemplative take on Barnt's sound, its mournful, edgy synths reminiscent of early electronic music.

Review: Some two years on from his last outing - a fine contribution to Botanic Minds' excellent Sunset Series - Barut returns to action, this time on Ibizan record shop More Than Music's offshoot label. He's in typically deep and dreamy former on title track 'Cuantiz', wrapping gently psychedelic electronics, dreamy aural textures and pulsing chords around a hypnotic, locked-in tech-house groove. The Miami-based producer opts for a slightly heavier and more druggy sound on tech-house box jam 'Legunia', before reaching for creepy chords, thickset analogue bass and weirdo sounds aplenty on 'Decima'. Piku steps up to remix the latter track, delivering a heavier and more stripped-back take notable for a throbbing bassline and deep, echoing synth stabs.

Give Me Back
Review: One of the leading lights in Lithuania's house and disco scene, Mr Basanov is no stranger to the esteemed climes of Needwant Records, and after the pop-embracing tones of his Journey album last year the Eastern European producer is back with an EP of unabashed club cuts that shimmer with late night allure and punchy dynamics. "Bill" is a dramatic cut full of amelodic arpeggios and monstrous stabs from the netherworld, but strapped to a rock solid beat. "Tor" meanwhile lets the beat slip to the background so that fuzzy synths may reach skywards with a hint of vintage electro about them, and "Give Me Back" goes further into the comforting blanket of warm musical arrangement as expressed through classic equipment.

Basement Space & Mans Glaeser - "Spacer Glaezer" (6:01)
Eric OS - "Timeout" (5:11)
Baby Rollen - "TwentyTwenty Home" (8:23)
Anna Kohlin - "What Time Is It?" (7:06)
Review: A releaser that crackles with an energy that could only emanate from the shadowy corners of the Swedish electronic underground. Anna Kohlin, label co-head and architect of hypnotic soundscapes, guides us through a diverse sonic landscape, her own 'What Time Is It?' leading the charge. Built from the evocative textures of the Roland JV-1080, it shimmers with a sunrise glow, ethereal pads interweaving with delicate melodies. Kohlin, a master of contrasts, doesn't shy away from the shadows, injecting her creation with sharper, dynamic elements that add a touch of grit to the dreamlike atmosphere. Eric OS throws down a challenge with 'Timeout', a sonic time capsule that transports us back to the early 2000s. Analogue warmth collides with the raw energy of digital sound, vintage synths intertwining with crisp beats in a nostalgic yet undeniably fresh sonic tapestry. Baby Rollen, armed with a looped double bass sample and the crisp snap of a 909, crafts a hypnotic groove with 'TwentyTwenty Home'. A warm 303 bassline snakes through the mix, adding a touch of acid-tinged euphoria to the already infectious rhythm. Basement Space and Mans Glaeser, never ones to shy away from the unconventional, deliver 'Space Glaezer', a sonic maze that twists and turns through intricate textures and unexpected rhythmic shifts. Kohlin's curation is nothing short of masterful, showcasing the diverse and ever-evolving landscape of the Swedish electronic music scene. Inside Out 002 is a testament to the power of electronic music to transport, inspire, and defy expectations.

Battle For Middle You (Maurice Donovan dub)
Ask Yourself (Midland remix)
Review: PMR set the bar high with their first release from Bristol's flame haired tyke Julio Bashmore, and the label promises much more with material from L-Vis 1990 and Two Inch Punch in the coming months. A further flex of credentials is shown on this twelve, with two of the tracks that made up Bashmore's debut getting the remix treatment from the Leeds House Mafia, David Kennedy and Midland. Kennedy adopts the Chicago House legend alias of Maurice Donovan to remix "Battle For Middle You", adding a certain drunk charm to those neon synth lines, whilst there's a satisfying crunch to the beats. Complementing this is a superlative reworking of "Ask Yourself" from rising talent Midland which retains the core brilliance of the original but dips it in a sumptuous sonic mist.

The Climax (Basic Reshape mix)
Review: Basic Reshape features Basic Channel's very free takes of two of Carl Craig's projects that were originally released separately from each other on his own Planet E label. The Basic Reshape of "The Climax" (which itself was originally released in 1991 on Retroactive) first appeared on the 2001 reissue of this milestone in Carl's work, is one of the most hypnotic and driving club tracks that Mark Ernestus and Moritz von Oswald have produced in their post Basic Channel period. "Remake" Basic Reshape from 1994 relates to "Remake Uno/Duo", Carl's sample-based re-interpretation of Manuel Göttschings epochal E2-E4. Basic Channel take a radical, abstract, sample-free approach with a breathtaking slow motion groove under a multilayered sound sphere. This track also appeared on the Basic Channel CD.

Review: The main tune uses the kind of chords we all love since Inner City's "Big Fun" has been released. In addition, the track has a sonic density which is considered as a trademark of the label. Backed by a powerful 909 groove, this is one of the ultimate club anthems a DJ can't fail with.

Review: R.A.N.D. Muzik Recordings brings back one of its old friends here as Basic Mind returns with more of his mind-expanding tech house trips. The Perth, Australia has always got grooves at the heart of his tunes and this offering is no different. 'Closed Gateway' kicks off with a sense of serene synth craft and crisp drum work before 'Exit Strategy' slows right down to leggy, slow-motion loops and dub swagger. 'Comm Cycle' has squelchy bass powering it along as widescreen and balmy pads soothe the soul up top then 'Meridian' closes out with another downtempo excursion.

Viento Lunar (5:43)
Endles Clouds (6:29)
Review: Vibraphone Records kicks off its New Year with a mighty first release that pays great tribute to the city of Detroit. Basic Realities is the artist behind the originals and the first is 'B-9', a percussive, loopy tech roller with vocal sounds and dreamy pads drifting in and out of focus. Motor City icon Kevin Sanderson then steps up to remix and does so with more warm and surging basslines and thudding drum funk. 'Viento Lunar' then cuts loose on some inventive melodies and cosmic rays of energy that unfold over tinny beats and 'Endles Clouds' rounds out with some more dusty drums and nice spangled synths that surge through the cosmos.

Last From Live (7:48)
Review: It has been a hot minute but after five years away, Basic7 is back on Tripmastaz's Respect The Craft Enterprises sub-label. He is someone celebrated for his edgy live sets and taps into some of that sonic invention here with four thumping minimal cuts. 'Time' is our favourite with its bleeping melodies ranging down the face of the track as a stiff bassline grinds away beneath crisp kicks and raw hats. 'Last From Live' is another gem that pairs rhythmic invention with great sound design and 'Future' and 'Fogtrak' also offer expressive minimal sounds and late-night freak-outs.

Are You House (drum vox) (8:11)
Review: Basil's vocals have been heard on house records since the late '90s, mainly on imprints like King Street Sounds and this time he teams up with the legendary Ron Trent. "Are You House" is bound to be one of those anthems we're gonna hear a lot going into 2016... And for probably a lot longer than that! The "vox" mix features Basil's epic and timeless monologue accompanied by the tough stomp of an 808, a bumping, razor sharp bassline and sparkling Rhodes keys; what more do you need? The "drum vox" mix does exactly what it says on the cover; a stripped DJ tool which focuses more on the 808 programming prowess without compromising on Basil's timeless message.

Review: It's been a while since trombone-tooting baron Bass Clef last graced our collections but, as always, the quality and creativity is rife across both vinyl-only tracks. "Entendrillar" is a spacious, fractured take on formative techno while "Transprism" flips for an evocative adventure. Expect nothing but pure positivity and striking major keys as he climaxes with an end-of-night-style hug-it-out air-raiser. Divine.

Bosh In Town (6:04)
A Bosh's Raveolution (7:04)
Review: The latest release on Club Vision comes from Bassam and MehdiM. Bassam is a French-Moroccan producer hitting the upwards curve of his career at this very moment, while MehdiM is the Egyptian artist helping uplift the scene in Cairo with his Sakanat label and party series. Everything on this record is about big, bright and bold party sounds, hence the title B.O.S.H. There's a distinctly bleep touch to 'Bosh Power' while 'Who Killed The Bosh' takes a trancier direction and 'Bosh In Town' channels a little Italo influence. Through it all, peak time house music is the glue holding these different influences together, and Bassam and MehdiM clearly know what they're doing in that department.
