Review:  Zy The Way hail from Taiwan and are recognised as pioneers of the jazz scene in Asia. Their signature style is to infuse their work with ancient Chinese poetry and their first outing 'A Different Destiny,' reimagined 3,000-year-old poems curated by Confucius and earned them plenty of plaudits. Now, they unveil two EPs as a prelude to their upcoming album. Collaborating with renowned remixers who operate at the jazz-electronic crossroads, they present 'Ten Acres' with a remarkable remix by Mark de Clive Lowe. Maintaining jazz's essence while igniting the dancefloor, this EP bridges East and West, past and present and shows Zy The Way as a transformative musical force who are pushing boundaries.

Review: Here comes yet another vital album of enthralling ambient from the super prolific Past Inside The Present label head zake aka Zach Frizzell. This is a numbered audiophile vinyl version (including a download code limited to 150 copies) of Veta, which is a world of smoky half-tones that mix up modern ambient classical with analogue production. The artist himself describes the work as "exercise in knowing when to draw back the mix" which speaks to its perfectly reduced sound - a blend of the organic and the synthetic that is masterfully layered and laden with heavy emotions.

Review: zake has written a new album to get 2025 underway in his usual prolific fashion, and it comes as both a triple CD set with the same tracks in different versions, but also as this special vinyl release with five different pieces from his Caelum series, limited to just 200 copies. As you would expect from this most masterful ambient leader, this is another immersive work that blends shifting synthscapes with melancholic chord work, beautiful keys with more lingering feelings of sadness. Another triumph if you ask us.

Review: zake's latest album, Dolere, unfolds meticulously over 70 minutes and invites you deep into his signature blend of detailed, harmonic drone. Inspired by the suspended weight of unchangeable emotions, the first movement drifts on melancholy waves all enveloped in analogue hiss and tape samples that echo a wandering mind's ceaseless pondering. The title track shifts mood with darkly-tinged drones and subtle field recordings that progress deliberately like shadows in a forest. Both pieces offer refuge from life's relentless pace and resonate like sonic Rorschach Tests or meditative soundscapes. Positioned alongside ambient greats like Thomas Koner, this is another essential album in a long line of them from this ambient titan.

Review: eve is the debut collaboration between Past Inside the Present label head zake and Benoît Pioulard captures the serene magic of a quiet December night. Spanning four side-length tracks, the album grew from a decade of sound fragments all layered up "like family album photos." zake shaped the sonic base while Pioulard added textures with guitar, voice, dulcimer, melodica and synths. The title track evokes a wintry stillness with low swells and turntable crackles, while 'Frost' drifts on reverent vocals and shimmering drones. 'Pine' conveys forest mystery and 'Slept' closes with haunting loops and a delicate resolution like snowfall on an open field.

Review: Stay With Me is an album by Past Inside The Present label head zake and T.R. Jordan from back in 2022. Now it has been revisited for a series of remixes by Dotlight and extra synth and field recording additions by zake that have all been pressed up to 180 gram purple vinyl. It is a work of immersive ambient beauty, with slowly shifting soundscapes defined by the most subtle of synth wisps, but each conveys a great feeling. Dutch guitarist Dotlights brings gentle beats to the likes of 'Infinite Sound' that add downtempo depths and late night romance to the already soothing original sounds.

Review: Frank Zappa once told KPFM-FM Radio that 'Sinister Footwear' is "a ballet about a guy who designs the ugliest shoe in the world and then all the things that happen before you get to wear it. And the shoe has been designed and I just saw like about ... twenty pairs of it, sitting around this place, it's really great." Ever the enigma, 'Sinister Footwear' could refer to the Frank Zappa track itself, 'Theme From The 3rd Movement of 'Sinister Footwear', or 'Sinister Footwear II'. Or this album, which collects highlights from his legendary New York City broadcast on 17th November 1981. A spectacular artefact from the height of his creative expression, at least some of the atmosphere, energy and creativity that captivated back then have survived onto this recording.

Review: Not to be confused with Zoot Allures, the 22nd studio album by American rock enigma Frank Zappa - released in 1976 - but purposefully confusable with that record, Zoot Alloors is just one artefact from the artist's critically acclaimed and technically astounding broadcast from New York City in November 1981. Like everything else Zappa, this mini-LP is part of a wider universe he constructed for himself before inviting fans to exist in it with him, and his inimitable performances style is captured here beautifully. Even the recording does its best to suck us right in there and leave us to explore. Tracks aren't so much tracks, but jumping off points for intense rock & roll, jazz, blues, glam and psyche jam movements that are invigorating, captivating and disorientating. A true original.

Review: A retrospective compilation of previously unreleased Frank Zappa tracks, anyone? The enigma left behind an incredible legacy in his 30 year career, time on stage spanning the majority of a life that was cut far too short, although by that point he'd already been lucky to survive an arson incident in Switzerland that left him with head trauma, numerous fractures, back, neck, and leg injuries and a crushed larynx that caused his voice to drop significantly after recovery. The incident also gave audience members Deep Purple inspiration for their seminal track, 'Smoke On The Water', but that's another story. Digressions aside, the tracks here are plucked from different periods in that inimitable storied history, but they all share political themes with an overriding anti-establishment message. A number also involve the Synclavier, one of the earliest digital synths, polyphonic sampling systems and music workstations ever created.

Review: "The Mothers of Invention cordially invite you to join them on Tuesday, July 23, 1968, when they will be taking over the Whisky a Go Go for five full hours of unprecedented merriment, which will be secretly recorded for an upcoming record album. Dress optional. Starting sometime in the evening. R.S.V.D.T." So the ad in the LA Free Press allegedly read. Five hours? Unprecedented merriment? Frank Zappa at the height of the 1960s youth awakening? Sounds decent to us, as does this package, pieced together from scraps of bits captured during that concert. A genuine ride into the wonderful insanity of a band that remain pretty much out there on their own in the great universe of rock & roll, its bluesy, proggy, funky, folky, punk-y business. And it could only be Zappa.

Review: In many ways its weird that Hans Zimmer has only won two Oscars - Best Original Score for The Lion King and 2021's Dune remake, alongside four Grammys. Before we reel off a fraction of the movies he's soundtracked, allow us to clear our throat. OK, let's do it - Gladiator, Inception, Blade Runner 2049, Interstellar, The Dark Knight, The Last Samurai, The Rock, we could go on and on. But while Zimmer is often associated with big budget, big screen spectaculars, he's also scored a slew of more intimate films. Like the Jessica Tandy, Morgan Freeman and Dan Aykroyd comedy drama classic, Driving Miss Daisy. Showcasing a more human side to his oeuvre, the five original tracks here are beautiful, sweet, tender, and truly moving. Meanwhile, the addition of Eartha Kitt's seminal Christmas anthem, 'Santa Baby', and Louis Armstrong's timeless 'Kiss of Fire', elevate the package.

Review: With its vast emotional and sonic 'scapes, this special soundtrack spans an epic 100 minutes over just nine tracks all of which offer a perfect snapshot of Hans Zimmer's signature bombast and thunderous drums. These extended pieces feature sweeping arpeggiated synths, vocal chants and rumbling bagpipes and the moods range from ethereal to ominous, wistful to sorrowful, often building into massive, dramatic crescendos, sometimes even within a single cue. Zimmer's masterful compositions create a truly epic listen and reaffirm his status as one of today's greatest living composers.

Review: Hans Zimmer is out in a class of one when it comes to the most accomplished soundtrack designers of his era. He is behind plenty of the biggest Hollywood hits from Dune to Gladiator and now he releases part two of his acclaimed 2019 album. It blends the grandeur of symphonic music with the intensity of cinematic composition across 17 reimaginings of his most iconic soundtracks into epic orchestral suites. Highlights include a stirring cello-led 'Final Ascent' from No Time to Die, a serene 'A Time of Quiet Between the Storms' from Dune II, and a lush romantic suite from The Prince of Egypt and much more all performed by the Odessa Orchestra & Friends and the Nairobi Chamber Choir.

Review: Synth-pop duo Marina Zispin aka Bianca Scout and Martyn Reid lead you on a trip into nocturnal spaces with this new album Now You See Me (Now You Don't). It is a place where time and memory come together into shadowy worlds of mechanical groves, airy melodies and retro-future imagery. N 'Piece Of Mind' the ghost of bands like Jy Division lurk in the stark drums and melancholic guitar lines, while 'Penthouse Samba' taps into dark disco chug and 'Venus Opulence' is a more minimal, sky and experimental concoction that will freak you out if you listen to it one with the lights out.

Review: Bethesda Game Studios and Laced Records have teamed up to release the Starfield soundtrack on deluxe vinyl. Music is central to Bethesda's games and composer Inon Zur has worked with the studio since Fallout 3 in 2008. For Starfield, Zur crafted a blend of orchestral and electronic sounds to capture the vastness of space and human curiosity. Influences range from John Williams and Vangelis to Debussy and John Cage, and it was all recorded by the Budapest Film Orchestra. The score features sweeping melodies, cosmic textures and Aeralie Brighton's vocals which help bring it to life in HD sound.
