Bit One (7:15)
Cloud Country (5:21)
Thinking Allowed (8:44)
Review: In a 2010 interview, Tornado Wallace explained the inspiration behind his distinctive title as "something between a deep south blues artist or a logger from Nebraska". In subsequent years the Australian has seemingly swapped the south blues artist for something southern Italo, keeping the Nebraskan edge with his logger's beard. This is demonstrated in wondrous fashion on the water-coloured artwork to Thinking Aloud, his debut EP for Lovefingers' ESP Institute. Heavy bass plods switch to a walking bassline in "Bit One", as motorised and starry arpeggios weave between breathy vocals that are as much human as they are synthesised. This is complemented by "Cloud Country" which lowers in BPM with more Italo inspired arpeggios, pulsating toms and sprinklings of Latin sounding synths. The title track "Thinking Allowed" hogs the flip, slowly revealing itself to be a Balearic burner of the highest calibre. It opens with an analogous kick-snare combo and a "higher-self" spoken word spiel that's reminiscent of Will Powers legendary "Adventures In Success". Peaks come; troughs go as the track builds sublimely before dovetailing back to its original form. Welcome back sir!

Review: As anyone who follows their Facebook feed can attest, the still-somehow-mysterious Tiger & Woods have largely spent the past twelve months treating the clubs of Europe and beyond to their own distinct brand of heavily diced up and devilishly EQ'd disco goodness. As a result, Editainment releases have slowed somewhat, though last year's Castle Rock EP from River & Phoenix demonstrated a welcome stylistic diversion into 80s teen drama classics. The Banana Balls EP heralds the return of Larry & David. There are few words that can be said about "Pitch" and "Slice" that haven't been uttered about a Tiger & Woods production previously, though given the fact the great edit glut of 2010-11 has thankfully passed it's probably quite nice to drop these loopy gems in the midst of a house set. The high octane "Slice" is a particularly rubbery delight.

Changes (Skylevel edit)
Picture Tomorrow (Skylevel edit)
Watch Your Step (Skylevel edit)
Smiling Stranger (Skylevel edit)
Review: While we're still none the wiser as to the identity of those behind the Skylevel crew, their fifth round of edits - after nearly 12 months of hibernation - are as top notch as we've come to expect from the outfit. The raucous slap-bass funk of "Changes" kicks things off, with abstract bleeps and sweeps adding some spice to the classic disco vocal, while the downtempo jazz cut-up of "Picture Tomorrow" brings some class to proceedings with its dusty guitar licks. On the flip, "Watch Your Step" pulls out the big guns with its simple but deadly filtered disco loop, offering just enough of the original vocal to set the floor alight, while "Smiling Stranger" delivers a soulful Balearic chugger filled with Indian tabla drums. As ever, the intricate artwork and fine production values elevate this above your standard disco edits - must check!

If You Want Me (Beaten Space Probe edit)
Sorcerer (Beaten Space Probe edit)
Act Like You (Beaten Space Probe edit)
Review: Japanese nu discophile BSP gets lively on Glenview and the results are salubriously squeaky clean. As they always are with this chap. Proceedings commences with a major hands aloft moment courtesy of his tweak of a Brooklyn Dreams jam; "Street Man" starts with a trippy, deep, loop intro before breaking into the full vocals with bare faced drama. Elsewhere we find him dissecting then rebuilding Norma Jean Wright's classic "Sorcerer" and Fat Larry's Band get a rude downtempo facelift. FYI: Disco boogie fans should head directly to "If You Want Me" for the biggest cosmic jam of the EP.

Review: Ruled by Passion, Destroyed by Lust marks the fine debut of The Asphodells, Andrew Weatherall's latest collaboration with close friend and creative foil Timothy J Fairplay. Their compatibility shines through, taking their shared interests and inspirations and playfully tosses them together to create a stylish, coherent whole. The album displays its dark underbelly proudly, but there are more than enough shards of light to inspire those salivating after the bold melodies of Two Lone Swordsmen or the naive, child-like bagginess of Weatherall's Screamadelica era work. At times reminiscent of New Order and others cripplingly paranoia inducing, this ten track set concludes in sublime fashion with the duo's dreamy, cosmic disco-era cover of A.R. Kane's "A Love From Out Of Space"

Inkswel - "So Over It" (feat Reggie B)
Freekwency - "Just For Two" (feat Molly D)
Review: Following killer transmissions for Unthank and Dopeness Galore last year, our favourite Australian funkateer Inkswel opens 2013 with a bang and a bump in the shape of Hot Shot Records, a new label the Melbourne based producer has founded with like minded soul Freekwency. Both artists contribute a side each to this debut release, a dinky seven that is practically bursting with unrestricted soulful drum machine music. Inkswel calls shotgun, teaming up with vocalist Reggie B for the glorious MPC fonk of "So Over It" whilst Voyeurhythm artist Freekwency also collaborates with a singer Molly D on the resplendent drum machine glisten of "Just For Two". It's only begun for Hot Shots - keep an eye on this label!

Drone Logic (Factory Floor Gabe Gurnsey remix)
Review: Daniel Avery was one of 2012's most refreshing success stories; his Fabric mix and two EPs for Erol Alkan's Phantasy Sound may not have slotted comfortably into any of the current flavours of the month, but they shone through thanks to their singular approach to techno. "Drone Logic" was one of the highlights of his second Phantasy release, where an old school progressive house bassline is chewed to pieces by bursts of electronic feedback, and this single-sided remix 12" sees Factory Floor's Gabe Gurnsey provide a fine remix that sounds remarkably restrained for a member of the inheritors of Throbbing Gristle's throne; like Avery's original Gurnsey keeps things mid-tempo but strips everything back to basics, with a simple analogue arpeggio which adds an early industrial quality.

Afterlife
Afterlife (Vakula remix)
Afterdub
Review: Recently tipped for greatness by Peaking Lights, you should be fully aware of Secret Circuit by now, having helped establish the Beats In Space label last year as well as releasing a killer album on Emotional Response. Eddie Ruscha Jnr returns to Beats Ib Space here ahead of a new album for Tim Sweeney's label and Afterlife has us purring with anticipation. The track has "instant classic" written all over it from the opening strains of its deep melodic analogue squelch, and though the vocals catch you by surprise they only enhance what is a nugget of Balearic gold. On the flip, the Ukrainian hero that is Vakula proves an inspired choice of remixer, turning the title track into a low-slung dusky house gem, while "Afterdub" rounds out the package, taking the original and floating it upwards on a cloud of hydrogenated synths.

Cero (original version)
Cero (DJ Harvey remix)
Review: Second time round for Galarude's "Cero", which first appeared on Japan's Locarno Records way back in 2004. Produced by DJ Kent, Hiroshi Kawanabe and Noriyoshi Sassanuma (Sly Mongoose), the original version is a near perfect fusion of heavy tribal drums, beautiful tropical melodies and darting Balearic electronics. It may be nine years old, but it still sounds wonderfully fresh. That Prins Thomas has selected it for reissue is no surprise. This time round, there's also a bonus remix from hairy legend DJ Harvey. The reclusive party-starter shuffles the pack impressively, adding some snaking saxophone action on a version that delights in bringing out the original's most positive elements.

Brokeaway (Mr Snippy untempo edit)
Be Good To You (Matpat Difference edit)
The Final Round (DJ Bang 12" version)
Review: Another Persnickety release and another fine clutch of edits to add to any discerning disco head. And they've really gone to town on this. Fittingly First Choice are up first; their squidgy bass n' string session perfectly dissected by Snippet to form a more subdued, deeper groove. Next up, Lou Rawls "Let Me Be Good To You" gets a deep techy treatment from Matpat Difference. With just snippet of vocal and a whole new whirligig of psychedelia, it's more a complete overhaul than an edit. Finally we hit Kasso's "One More Round". Once remixed by Mr Knuckles, now sassed up by DJ Bang, it's been given a total groove refocus while retaining the enduring playground pop flavours.

By Design - "Stir It Together"
Osmose - "Al Knows What's Up"
Osmose - "Slomo Tattoo Dubbed"
Review: Cruising nice and easy into earshot on the Smokecloud imprint, byDesign and Osmose take a side each in chopping up some choice old classics with a tender touch to work in modern contexts. byDesign gets the whole A-side to roam over with a version of Diana King's cover of the Bob Marley classic, "Stir It Up", working on a 90s flavoured hip hop groove and dubby cuts of King's vocal. On the flip, Osmose is having a lot of fun working on Alexander O'Neal's "Fake", keeping the tough beat intact and instead letting the effects bring in the changes. While the origin of the last track on the 12" is undetectable at this point, "Slomo Tattoo Dubbed" comes on like a prime slice of Balearic goodness, packing easy horn blasts, funky guitar licks and a whole lot of filter action.

Good Love For YOU (skit)
Review: Ava's leading soul aficionado and renowned German editor Tito Wun collided to pen this 2012. It arrived early in 2013 to great acclaim and is now about to enjoy a limited hand-stamped repress. A melting pot of sizzled-sampled and love for every element of our foundations, across the half hour expect to be blown away by the boogie, dazzled by the disco and fazed by the funk. From epic extended stompers to short, head-bending minuets, Ava's debut album remains one of the label's most prominent and agenda-setting releases to date. If you didn't pick it up first time around, now is most certainly the time.

Gabe Fall Back Loop
Nik Fall Back Loop
Review:  Returning with their inimitable brand of propulsive, industrial toned party heat, Factory Floor offer up a simple one-shot hit of peak time damage in this track for DFA. The menacing arpeggio launches with aplomb, hinting at the fever-inducing modulations it will undergo throughout the duration of the track. The drums meanwhile splutter and flail, teasing the groove until the time is right to rip into a driving disco arrangement as the synth bleeds into a glorious blast of intensity. Over all of this comes a necromancing vocal, and little else is needed to ensure a scene of complete devastation. Three nice little surprises on the flip too

Set Me Loose (extended original version)
Review: Permanent Vacation return to the superbly slack sounds of The Return Of Love, last year's long player from West Coast troupe Woolfy Vs Projections, lifting out "Set Me Loose" for reworking duty from a typically stellar cast of cosmic minds. Recently anointed into the Balearic Hall Of Fame otherwise known as the Claremont 56 Original series, Swiss producer Lexx demonstrates once again his production prowess matches his digging skills with a lead remix which envelopes the original in a dubby, exotica that gets better with every listen. Spanish producer El_Txef_A trades warmth for a sparse, stripped down groove that brings out a sense of tension, whilst Erdbeerschnitzel's mate The Drifter adds some surprising punch to proceedings.

Hit & Runnin
Review: Emerging Chicago groover Boogie Nite gets his Glenview debut, and it's a rather remarkable piece of work. With a sound set that bumps and bulges with a really trippy edge, his overall approach can be compared to Derrick Carter, but played underwater on really heavy sedatives. His native Chi-town jack is there but there's an overall psychedelic, cosmic flavour going on. From the dreamlike whirls and twirls of "The Happy Song" to the star-gazing Henrik Schwarz style shimmers of the title track, this really is quite special.
