Review: Although there's always been a sense of momentum driving Daniel Avery, those gears have switched up a notch or two this year, possibly linked to his decision to quit recording under the name Stopmakingme. His arrival on Erol Alkan's Phantasy Sound imprint seems so natural it's strange that it's only happened now, and means the Bournemouth lad done good has essentially worked with his two teen idols in Alkan and Weatherall. The Need Electric EP arrives just as Avery has let slip his commission to complete a Fabric Live mix and the four tracks have him working fully with a vocalist for the first time. The title track pays homage to Avery's formative Electroclash years, bringing the attitude of Miss Kittin and The Hacker up to 21st Century scratch as the stripped down groove twists itself ever tighter around the detuned analogue core. "Taste" and "One In The Wave" will mess with peoples expectations (in the best way possible) whilst "The Eagle" shows Avery has learnt plenty since joining Weatherall's Scrutton Street mafia.

Review: Pioneering and mercurial DJ Erol Alkan and former Grid man Richard Norris have been spinning discs together for well over a decade, and remixing other outfits for almost as long, after bonding on a love of '60s psychedelia and classic acid house - yet this marks their bona fide debut as recording artists, and it's a glorious collision of both these passions - fuelled by crate-digging acumen and exemplary taste, and reflective of a magpie spirit that renders these third-eye-massaging gems more than mere psychedelic pastiche, rather a bold and joyful reinvention of lysergic glories of yore for a new aeon.

Fantasma (Kowton remix) (limited hand-stamped 1-sided 12")
Cat: PH 48RMX. Rel: 15 Feb 16
  1. Fantasma (Kowton remix) (5:20)
Review: One-sided 12" affair from Erol Alkan's Phantasy Sound that pits the Cowboy Rhythmbox project of Richard X and Nathan Gregory Wilkins up against the production skills of Livity Sound main man Kowton. First released last year, the original version of "Fantasma" summed up the project's slightly tongue in cheek approach, pairing outlandish synth motifs with thundering percussive excess and thick EBM basslines. It was understandably a hit with the Comeme crew and it's likely Kowton's remix will crossover into many DJ sets too. The Livity man remains quite faithful to Cowboy Rhythmbox's intentions, but cranks the pressure up somewhat for a near-perfect five minute DJ tool.

  2. Children Of The Monolith (8:32)
  3. Soda Jerk (6:22)
Review: Nathan Wilkins and Richard X are back on the Phantasy Sound imprint with their third appearance for the label, another inimitable blend of techno, disco and electro that forms a powerful cocktail of dance music. "Mecanique Sauvage" is the perfect example of what they do best, and that is to create club music with a hard edge that has the scope to appeal to any sort of clubber in the mood to get moving. The B-side expands their reach further still, first via the slower and more cavernous wail of "Children Of The Monolith", a mid-tempo, disco-not-disco abstraction, and then with the bubbling boogie bumps of "Soda Jerk". An eccentric and majestic electronic affair...

Lucky (Audion remix)
 in stock $9.01
Cat: PH 47. Rel: 21 Sep 15
  1. Lucky (Audion remix) (6:10)
  2. Lucky (dub) (5:17)
Review: Here's something to get the senses tingling; a typically surging, heavyweight remix of Phantasy's enigmatic odd-pop starlet Ghost Culture from Matthew Dear's alternative Audion project. His remix of "Lucky" is undeniably stellar, lacing snippets of Ghost Culture's vocal and fuzzy electronic textures over a booming, kick-drum heavy techno groove and surging, high tempo sub bass motif. It's fairly sparse, production wise, but ludicrously heavy. Ghost Culture provides a dub of the same track on the flip, cutting-up his Junior Boys style vocals and bubbling synthesizer refrains in a little more dancefloor-friendly way. It's solid, but really this is all about the Audion remake.

Consignia Remixes (12" + MP3 download code)
Cat: PH 49RMX2. Rel: 26 Sep 16
  1. Consignia (George Fitzgerald remix) (5:38)
  2. Ventoux (Throwing Snow remix) (6:10)
Review: Kamera's "Consignia" was first featured on last year's Ventoux E.P, and has since been remixed by Truncate and Yalessa Hall. Here, Phantasy Sound delivers two more reworks, with Hotflush regular George Fitzgerald, and Houndstooth sort Throwing Snow at the controls. Fitzgerald steps up first, delivering a chilling club-ready techno roller full of creepy, looped bleep melodies, trippy breakdowns and dense drums. It's rather impressive, all told, but also more than a little intense. Throwing Snow's remix is pleasingly loose and baggy in comparison, despite the presence of a particularly foreboding bassline. The dreaminess of the rework's vibe can be put down to the producer's expert combination of spacey chord progressions and tumbling melody lines.

Cat: PH 49RMX 1. Rel: 04 Jul 16
  1. Consignia (Truncate remix) (5:30)
  2. Consignia (Yaleesa Hall dub remix) (6:44)
Review: The apparent 'necessary alias' of an established recording artist, Kamera has well and truly been welcomed into the Phantasy Sound fold with two releases so far that have helped further distinguish the label's ever-refined voice. A pilgrimage up the unforgiving French mountain Ventoux inspired Kamera's prior Phantasy release, and now the lead track from that single, "Consignia", is treated to a pair of high profile remixes. The raw, deep techno Truncate has pioneered is deployed to great effect on his remix, reducing Kamera's fierce original to a calmer rhythmic patina augmented by a neat, sharp vocal hook. Occupying a much ruder place is the Yaleesa Hall Dub mix, with the Will & Ink artist recalling the odder end of the UK bassline spectrum.

Forever Dolphin Love

Cat: BEC 5772813. Rel: 14 Mar 11
  1. Forever Dolphin Love (original)
  2. Forever Dolphin Love (Mickey Moonlight remix)
  3. Forever Dolphin Love (Erol Alkan extended rework)
Review: The always refreshing Phantasy Sounds label does their bit for the Keep Vinyl Alive campaign with a rather special twelve inch version of the delightfully obscure "Forever Dolphin Love" from Connan Mockasin - check the bizarro video too! Naturally the presence of an Erol Alkan remix is big news and the Phantasy boss has delivered perhaps his finest work in some time, subtly twisting the introspective ode to porpoises into a burning, cosmic, late night jam that clocks in at ten glorious minutes. Far removed from the more abrasive dancefloor workouts Alkan has been indulging in of late, it's a tantalising example of his forever blossoming production skills. In addition the vastly under rated Mickey Moonlight goes deep on a remix which sounds like Mockasin is reciting the track from the depths of an ocean, with some particularly excellent stretched out effects. Housed on a totally clear twelve inch, this is special from top to bottom.
