Decimated #4
Review: Since surfacing last year with a contribution to the New Jack Techno compilation for zeitgeist chasers Turbo, the London based J. Tijn has more than lived up to his billing as an 'up & coming' producer. This year he inaugurated Untold's techno-focused Pennyroyal label with two 12-inch singles as well as appearing on the OHWL#Ten series from Belgian label Other Heights. J. Tijn's third release sees the young producer combine the one track of Detroit house, "Flat", with three cuts of decidedly dubby and Berlin-centric techno, showing off a more cultured side to his productions.

Ripples (5:34)
Body Said No (5:50)
Review: Wonky, disjointed, trippy and a hell of a lot of fun... These are just some of the ways to describe Jabes' new 12" on Timedance. Continuing his twisted, brilliantly unclassifiable signature, 'Ripples' is a data-glitching, stompy whirlwind of feels that builds and builds and builds, teasing with every twist and turn. 'Body Said No' takes this tense sense of surrealism even further as the drums scatter into breaks and that constant sense of winding up is brought even further to the fore. Scatty in the best possible way.

Mushrooms (Trevino remix)
Mushrooms (Fritz Wentink remix)
Review: "Mushrooms", a collaboration between Marshall Jefferson and Chris Liebing and Andrew Wooden's Noosa Heads project, has been remixed many times since it's release in 1996, and now bass centric UK label Shifting Peaks have tapped up two new producers to add their own contemporary spin on the track. First up is one of 2012's success stories - Trevino, the all conquering techno alias of Marcus Intalex - who turns in one of his Detroit-inspired killers, combining a futuristic rubbery bassline with deeper house touches. On the flip, Dutch maestro of glistening, broken, house music Frits Wentink enhances the original with some bristling synth handiwork and laid back 2-step beats.

Maximum Busy Muscle
Review: All has been quiet on the release front at Hessle HQ since the outstanding WMD that was Raw Code by Pev & Kowton was issued earlier this year. Such was the magnificence of "Raw Code", Hessle Audio could feasibly not release another record this year and you'd say it was a triumphant 12 months. However, Ben UFO, Pangaea and Pearson Sound clearly have other plans with the overdue return of Joe the first of two releases from Hessle in the next few months. The publicity shy producer's prior material for Hessle and Hemlock remain some of the multi-faceted bass scene's most distinctive music to date, taking influence from jazz and broken beat as much as it does from the grime and jungle being recomposed by his Hessle pals. Two tracks deep, HES025 features the emotive yet abstract house of "Slope" and "Maximum Busy Muscle", which combines ramshackle drums held together with stray horn samples and masking tape.

Hemlock Recordings Chapter One: Part III

Joe - "REJ Bit"
Randomer - "This Train"
Review: The third 12" of Chapter One exclusives sees Hemlock regulars Joe and Randomer deliver two quite different takes on contemporary bass music. "R.E.J. Bit" is like a companion piece to his recent "MB" for the label, a jazzy piece of broken house interspersed with off-kilter sound effects. Randomer's "This Train" continues along the acid breakbeat house path he's been cultivating for the past year, combining clattering hi-hats, concrete drums and heaving bass in a chugging package that more than does justice to its name.

Martyn - "Frozen Bread Snaps" (5:15)
Sin, Gremlinz & Jesta - "Door Of Guf" (5:45)
Noire - "Ballas" (4:00)
Parris - "Dusty Glass Bubbles" (5:26)
Review: This new one on Martyn's 3024 might be a various artists affair but the tracks sit rather well together, which is even more remarkable given the diverse backgrounds of those involved: Noire with his super hard drums, Metalheadz affiliates Gremlinz & Jesta who link here with Sin, and Parris who makes some truly bonkers club music. Martyn's own "Frozen Bread Snaps" is the opener that most impresses with its delicate and skeletal drum programming and heartfelt chords. Elsewhere, "Door Of Guf" is a high octane rough rider while "Ballas" is perfectly off kilter and funky. "Dusty Glass Bubbles" somehow sounds exactly like it should with that title.

Max D - "No Snare" (6:05)
The Khan - "Part Of Me (Ode To DC)" (2:47)
Review: Following up releases by the likes of Mark Seven, Florist and Cygnus, Ari Goldman's Washington D.C-based World Building returns with this awesome varioust artist compilation. Neighborhood Watch Volume One features a wide selection of moods and grooves: NativeSun vs JamesBangura get stuck into some dark dubstep on 'Demon Mode' much like The Khan does later on the deeply meditative 'Part Of Me (Ode To DC), while Sami gets their swing on with the classic house of 'Marty & Jack', Juana's tunneling 'It's Low' gives you a dose of heroin house and over on the flip Max D gets deep down and dirty on 'No Snare'.

Objekt - "Balloons"
An-i - "Convo"
JoeFarr & J Tijn - "Mustard Sucker"
Positive Merge - "Note"
Review: Since 2012 Power Vacuum has made a name for itself by releasing unrelenting rave and acid fuelled techno. After a strong second year of releases that included contributions from Mark Broom and EDMX, as well as several releases from label founder Milo Smee, the first Power Vacuum release of 2014 introduces five new artists on a split release. Although the highlight for many will be a rare track from Objekt, the angular shock and awe techno of "Balloons", the rest of the contributions are equally great. Turbo's latest recruits Joe Farr and J.Tijn team up for the steamroller that is "Mustard Sucker" while Ukrainian hard techno producer Positive Merge delivers the relentless gabber-esque stomp of "Note", but perhaps the most eye-catching inclusion is the new An-i project from Lee Douglas that recently debuted on Minimal Wave's sister label Cititrax, with the ex-TBD man delivering the scrambled frequencies of "Convo". In a word: essential.

PinballSpider - "In One Ear" (4:54)
Johnny Hunter - "89' Brakes" (6:05)
Review: The excellent and stylistically varied Banoffee Pies label comes through with another of is talent-packed various artist releases here. Yushh opens with churning, bass heavy melodic techno that floats you high up in the atmosphere, Kincaid's 'Inside' (feat J Caesar) is an eerie minimal piece with ambient synths and a percolating post-jungle rhythm, then Tristan Arp's 'Circling The Abyss' peppers a skeletal beat with toms and hits to make you move. PinballSpider and Johnny Hunter close out with a pair of rhythmic techno tunes that are utterly futuristic.
