Review: Translated into English, The Novice is a 1975 Italian movie about a young chap returning to his provincial hometown to visit his dying uncle, who is being cared for by a night nurse who also happens to be a novice nun, played by the remarkably beautiful and seductive Gloria Guida. An erotic comedy, you can guess where the plot goes, but the casting of Lionel Stander as ageing relative is interesting.
The US actor was memorialised in Eric Bentley's play Are You Now Or Have You Ever Been after his famously uncooperative testimony before the House of Un-American Activities, responsible for exposing communists in the early days of the Cold War. Subsequently blacklisted from TV, film, and radio in his homeland, he eventually moved to Europe, first setting up shop in London, where he would make flicks for decades, often pretty obscure ones. This is one, and the music is wonderfully kitsch, Wurlitzer-packed elevator stuff, so if that's your bag so is this.

The resulting soundtrack is crafted from a variety of synth sounds, electric keyboards, drums, percussion and saxophones and off course, some of his signature guitars, It is sorry telling instrumental music with a real sense of its own narrative and perfectly frames the film's compulsive themes and images. It stands alone as a fine listen and a great testament to Ty's versatility.

Review: Comet In Moominland was a cult kids TV show that has never been heard before. It is a world of Moomin melodies and instrumental comet songs from a show that is often said to be one of the most haunting ever shown for children. It is crafted on a weird and wonderful array of gear, with lo-fi home tricks as well as ocarinas, kalimbas, miniature squeak boxes, Waspy synths, cornflake box shakers and more. Review: While the soundtracks to earlier Stranger Things seasons often included lots of original music lovingly composed and produced to sound like atmospheric synthesiser jams of the 1980s, this compilation of music from the latest season does not. Instead, it rounds up some of the classic pop music of the period used in the series. Kate Bush's 'Running Up That Hill', which of course returned to the top of the UK singles charts on the back of its inclusion in the series, naturally appears, alongside a mixture of big '80s pop hits (see the cuts by Journey, Kiss, Dead Or Alive and Metallica), much-loved cuts from earlier eras (the Beach Boys, Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald, James Taylor) and, more surprisingly, a later track from Moby.

Review: Talk about a cultural Tardis, Doctor Who ranks among the most longstanding love affairs British TV viewers have ever had with a work of science fiction, ranking up there with global phenomena such as Star Trek in terms of legions of faithful fans and decade-spanning sagas. After a small blip of obscurity in the mid-late-1990s and immediate post-millennium years, the show rebooted and reconfigured for the 21st Century in 2005, and hasn't left the common conscience since.
The score is certainly something to do with that resonance. As far as theme tunes go, Doctor Who's may not still be the most forward thinking (as it was back in 1963), but it's easily up there in the premier league of iconic. On this live rendition of music from the latter-day Series 1 & 2 that theme remains as impactful, while a talented entourage of players and conductors also help us remember just how consistent the music is overall.

Review: The Leftovers is Max Richter's score for the HBO series of the same name. The story is about the Garvey family in the fictional town of Mapleton, New York and explores what happens when 2% of the world's population disappears all of a sudden. It was first aired in 2014 and was a real critical hit and that's in no small part thanks to the score. It is haunting and eerie at times, laden with doom at other and run through with a subtle sense of hope when needed. And would you expect anything less from one of the most influential composers of his generation?

Norma Kay made all the instrumental music the features underneath the dialogue while the famous theme music was of course the work of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop.

Review: It was big news when Daft Punk were enlisted to record the soundtrack to Disney's remake of Tron. While the film has perhaps faded from view slightly, the soundtrack remains a popular notch in the French duo's latter-day legacy. Here, we get treated to a reissue of the big budget remix collection which came out in 2011. It's a neat snapshot of the electronic music landscape at the time, ranging from The Glitch Mob to M83, Moby to Paul Oakenfold, Boys Noize to Photek and the late, great Avicii. You certainly wouldn't get the same cast of characters together for a similar package now, making this a document of the era as well as an essential collection of premier league dance music.
