Don Rendell was in no uncertain terms a towering figure in British modern jazz for more than 50 years. He was not only there when the genre evolved into what it is today, but was driving that evolution with his masterful playing and compositional skills as part of this famous quintet. Review: Ken Wheeler was a musician who was more than well schooled in the conventions of charts and dance bands. But for this project he cut loose and show a more improvisational skill and free will to go off-grid It's his debut album and was recorded with the John Dankworth Orchestra featuring a young John McLaughlin on guitar, Dave Holland on bass and various other talents who all helped make this such a fine example of modern jazz, big band and orchestral styles. Tunes like 'Propheticape' swell and build to tune peaks before all energy is dissipated and the trumpet is left to rebuild. 'Altisidora' is more quiet and subtle with oboes and gelt percussion setting the mood. 'Bachelor Sam' is a wandering wonder. Lovely.

Review: Tenor saxophonist Billy Harper played with many of the greats of the hard bop and post-bop era, and they in turn often guested on his solo albums. He made loads of those over the course of his career, with 1975's Black Saint being arguably the most revered. Joined by bassist David Friesen, drummer Malcolm Pinson, pianist Joe Bonner and trumpeter Virgil Jones, Harper delivered an album in which his expressive, energetic, fluid and occasionally near breathless solos took centre stage on a trio of epic, post-bop workouts. The real star of the show remains 21-minute flipside 'Call of the Wild and Peaceful Hearts', which moves from quiet contemplation to riotous intensity via some genuinely breezy and attractive middle sections.

Review: Francisco Mora Catlett is a Mexican drummer, composer and educator. He began his musical career in Mexico City where he worked as a session musician for Capitol Records between 1968-1970. He left with Sun Ra in 1973 and worked with him until 1980. While in Detroit in 1987, he released his first album as a leader, the Pan-Afro project "Mora!". Mora II continues the concept of the first album, with wife Teresa Mora on vocals and trumpet legend Marcus Belgrave, This follow up album has finally been given a high quality vinyl reissue by London's Far Out Recordings.

Review: The much loved and always essential Jazz Is Dead series hits instalment number eight here. The project was only conceived in 2020 by musicians and producers Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad and aims to work with jazz legends on new material. This time it is Gil-Scott Heron's famous partner Brain Jackson in the spotlight. There are plenty of languid grooves that float on airy drumming with acoustic piano and electric bass also weaved in. Afro-Cuban flavours colour closeR 'Ethiopian Sunshower,' which is the most sedate of the lot.

Review: Renata Lu is a bit of an enigma. She made a couple of much loved albums in the 1970s and did some backing vocal work on cult records by stars such as Tim Maia and Nonato Buzar. Despite this, she never became a standalone star in the world of MPB and so remains a little known figure. Her self titled 1971 debut album on Copacabana Records was a heavyweight mix US soul and funk with spicy Latin percussion, all dropped over samba and boogaloo beats. It is high energy, with lots of big horns, electric piano riffs and angular bass as well as some swooning strings. This deluxe edition marks a real landmark in the world of funk carioca.

Review: There are few finer alto-sax players in the world than Art Pepper. By the time of his death run 1982 his legacy was already assured after a fantastic run of albums such as his standout Art Pepper Meets The Rhythm Section. Plus 11 is right up there too, though: the 1960 jazz record saw Art work with an ensemble of 11 other musicians arranged by Marty Paich. It's one of a number dates the two played together that year but the only one with Pepper leading. Pepper's clarinet performance on 'Anthropology' and the alternate takes of 'Walkin'' are real standouts.

Review: Art Pepper was regarded as one of the world's greatest alto-sax players by the time of his death in 1982. This album, Art Pepper Meets The Rhythm Section, is widely regarded as one of his finest works, although legend has it he was only informed about the session the morning of recording and arrived unprepared. He was playing with a strong band - at the time they were Miles Davis' rhythm section no less. Review: Performer, composer and educator Brandee Younger is an accomplished ensemble leader who has worked with the likes of Lauryn Hill and Phaorah Sanders. Here she is back at the front of her own troupe with an album that was recorded in New York City at the legendary studio of Rudy Van Gelder. The music is richly detailed contemporary jazz but with echoes of Black greats like Alice Coltrane and Dorothy Ashby. Legendary bassist Ron Carter appears as does Tarriona Tank Ball to make this a real jewel of a record.

Review: Ahbe, Nature Boy, Eden Ahbez, whatever you want to call him, the original hippie is back. Now, Light In The Attic deliver on the proto-psychedelic's only ever album, repackaging it in all its glory for a deluxe box set edition. Containing the original album, as well as a 24-page booklet, collectors are touting it as the defining reissue for 60s music freaks. An original 1960s mono pressing will fetch upwards of L400, and for good reason: Ahbez' original compositions for piano, xylophone, flute and spoken word, from 'Myna Bird' through to 'Full Moon', completely transcend his jazz standard associations for a more pioneering, visionary ambient breakthrough into a new genre, which later came to be known as 'exotica'.

Review: WallenBink line up another hugely collectable 7" from the Nathan Davis Quintet here, this time on audiophile vinyl. Recorded in 1965, 'Happy Girl' has remained unissued on wax ever since then. It was made by a first rate collective including the likes of Woody Shaw on trumpet and Larry Young, who is often said to be "the Coltrane of the organ." 'Theme From Zoltan' is a superb modal original and on the flip side is another uptempo working in the form of 'Mister E,' which was written by Nathan, and is packed with high grade solos. This limited edition pressing was transfered from analogue mastertapes.

Review: Mark Murphy is often heralded as one of the greatest jazz singers of all time. Despite this his profile never quite matched popular opinion. He maintained a cult status and the highlight of his recording career came in 1968 with his Midnight Mood album. Two of the best tunes from that SABA release now get pressed on 45 for the first time ever. Opener 'Sconsolato' has a distinctly Latin flavour to the swaying rhythms and patter of drums, with great reed work heightening the feels. On the flip is 'Just Give Me Time' which is a more overtly steamy and sexy bossa number with room-filing sound and Mark's unique vocals front and centre.

Review: Jazz-funk doesn't get much better than this one from Italian pianist, arranger, conductor, composer and record producer Puccio Roelens. It is a fantastic selection of high energy, densely arranged tunes with plenty of standout solos along the way. On other albums, the artist explored more soul and disco sounds but this one from 1976 is all about the jazz and the funk. There are plenty of lush electric piano lines that reach for the skies, fuzzy guitar riffs and noodling basslines that make you all warm inside. This fully licensed reissue is limited to just 400 copies.
