Review: Few jazz saxophonists were as majestic as Hank Mobley. He had a unique sound that sat in between the rawness of John Coltrane and the smoothness of Stan Getz and released a number of now-classic albums. Soul Station has already had the Tone Poet Series treatment and next up to get remastered and come on new audiophile vinyl is A Caddy For Daddy. He had already been a But Note artist for some 10 years when he recorded this one in 1965. It finds him alongside a first-class sextet with Lee Morgan on trumpet, Bob Cranshaw on bass, McCoy Tyner on piano, Billy Higgins on drums and Curtis Fuller on trombone.

Review: Since bagging the 2014 Mercury Music Prize for sophomore set V.20, GoGo Penguin has become one of the most talked-about outfits around. The self-confessed "very modern piano trio" has succeeded largely due to their far-sighted ability to fuse more traditional jazz and classical music sounds with a surprisingly wide palette of influences, most notably dancefloor-focused 21st century electronic music. On A Humdrum Star, their fourth full length, the Manchester threesome has decided to take a "freer" and more "liberated" approach. The resultant music is every bit as exciting, entertaining and beguiling as you'd expect, with the full-throttle, high-octane dancefloor jazz of "Raven", atmospheric and undulating "Bardo" and gently jazz-funk influenced brilliance of closer "Window" amongst the highlights.

Review: Jazz trumpet legend Donald Byrd has one of those seemingly endless discography that takes in solo and group albums and is full of treasure that is well worth exploring no matter your particularly stylistic penchant. 1963's A New Perspective is a landmark album that brings gospel and soul elements into his usual jazz sound. It features a stellar lineup including Herbie Hancock and Hank Mobley and the centerpiece is the iconic 'Cristo Redentor,' a soulful composition that showcases Byrd's lyrical trumpet playing. With its fusion of genres, the album broke new ground and paved the way for future jazz explorations that Pitchfork have said is one of the best albums of the 1960s. Byrd's innovative approach and the ensemble's tight chemistry make that so.

Review: One of the finest line-ups of Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers came together when saxophonist Wayne Shorter joined trumpeter Lee Morgan, pianist Bobby Timmons and bassist Jymie Merritt, as featured on this now newly reissued 1960 album A Night In Tunisia. The album kicks off with a blazing rendition of Dizzy Gillespie's iconic piece - which lends its name to the LP - while the rest of the set highlights original compositions from the new band members. This Blue Note Classic Vinyl Edition is a stereo, all-analogue release mastered by Kevin Gray from the original master tapes, so sounds superb.

Review: Two days after he laid down his most celebrated album, "Go!", saxophonist Dexter Gordon gathered together the same line-up of musicians - Sonny Clark on piano, Butch Warren on bass and Billy Higgins on drums - and recorded a follow-up. Initially released in 1962, "A Swingin' Affair" has long been considered a hard-bop classic - hence this fresh reissue from Blue Note. It certainly contains some of Gordon's best work, not least the sparkling opener "Soy Califa", the languid and smoky niceness of "You Stepped Out Of A Dream" and the bluesy, bittersweet brilliance of slow-motion classic "Until The Real Thing Comes Along".

Review: Alto saxophonist Jackie McLean's 1960s output ran the gamut from hard bop to the avant-gard, with his 1964 post-bop dates It's Time! and Action splitting the difference. Now reissued for Blue Note's Tone Poet series, this reissue of the latter LP follows up Rudy Van Gelder's 2004 curator's edition; McLean's playing is lithe and limber here, piquing out from each mix - from the opening fan-outs of 'Plight' to the continual peacockings of 'I Hear A Rhapsody' - as if to suggest that McLean himself knows that his instrument resounds at the exact high frequency that naturally commands human attention. With the Tone Poet series primed for audiophiles, you're in for a treat.

Review: Now more than 80 years old and onto its umpteenth reissue after the latest was a 75th anniversary edition in 2015, Wayne Shorter's Adam's Apple remains as classic as ever. This Classic Vinyl Series issue is all-analogue and mastered by Kevin Gray from the original master tapes then pressed on 180g vinyl. Next to sax from Wayne himself, Herbie Hancock, Reggie Workman and Joe Chambers joined the ranks to help cook up these serious grooving and cool-cat tunes. It was originally released in 1966 and still stands out as one of his greatest ever albums.

Review: Bashed out in no time at all, Andrew Hill's Andrew!!! drew on an astonishing creative upsurge enjoyed by many a musician in the early 1960s, which proved fortuitous for the pianist's storied early-career Blue Note run. Captured in 1964 with a distinctive quintet including John Gilmore, Bobby Hutcherson, Richard Davis, and Joe Chambers, this de facto debut showcases Hill's singular compositional voice across six dense, exploratory originals like 'The Griots' and 'Black Monday'; while his earlier Point Of Departure tends to attract the spotlight, Andrew!!! colours between the lines in a different shade. Review: Jutta Hipp's At The Hickory House Vol. 1 is a window into a world where jazz piano can swing without fanfare and charm without overstatement. Recorded live in 1956, it captures a moment in time where Hipp, a little-known German transplant to New York, performed with bassist Peter Ind and drummer Ed Thigpen in a tight, energetic trio format. Hipp's lightly-swinging style moves effortlessly through bebop themes and standards, showing a deftness that feels unforced and natural, with just the right amount of flair. This Blue Note Classic Vinyl Edition is about the purity of soundimono, all-analogue, and mastered from the original tapes by Kevin Gray. The 180g pressing at Optimal guarantees that every note rings out with clarity, allowing listeners to experience Hipp's playing as it was meant to be heard. It's as close to stepping into that intimate club setting as you'll get without a time machine. There's a reason this release still resonates: the understated brilliance of a pianist who never quite got the limelight she deserved, but certainly made a lasting impression on those who tuned in.

Review: Sizzling-hot hip-hop duo Blue Lab Beats are on everybody's lips now, thanks at least in part to the announcement of their latest full-length album, Blue Eclipse. Heralding an exciting new era for the duo, these 12 songs reveal the depth and breadth of producer NK-OK, and multi-instrumentalist Mr DM's musical ambition. Throwing back to their debut EP 'Blue Skies', which even pre-dates their involvement with record labels, Blue Eclipse signals a circling back to their origins while also embracing the new; the pair's usual jazztronica remit is lent the utmost contemporary spin, with notes of drill, neoclassical, trap and Jersey bounce - all still prevalent styles - peeking through in these latest productions.

Review: Cassandra Wilson originally released Blue Light 'til Dawn in 1993 on Blue Note. Gathering together selected covers of blues and rock classics, Wilson and her band turn them to sultry, smoky jazz pieces with an evocative, late-night mood. From Robert Johnson and Joni Mitchell to Ann Peebles and Van Morrison, there are some heavy hitters covered here, but don't overlook the original title track. Amongst everything else it shows off Gib Wharton's stunning pedal steel guitar, which lends itself to this moody hue Wilson and her cohorts conjure so effectively.

Review: Boston-born baritone saxophonist Serge Chaloff was an early bebop innovator who delivered his defining work with Blue Serge in 1956. He was admired for his lyrical agility on an often unwieldy instrument and apparently overcame some personal struggles to record this standout session for Capitol Records, which finds him backed by jazz greats Sonny Clark on piano, Leroy Vinnegar on bass and Philly Joe Jones on sticks. Review: The most famous label in jazz celebrates a monumental 85 years in action. How else to do that than with an all star cast of giants of the genre, captured at the top of their game? Miles Davis, Theolonious Monk, John Coltrane - they don't come much more legendary than this, and this 2xCD is a comprehensive catalogue of brilliance, with the label's latter years also represented via Norah Jones and a host of others.
