Review: The Allman Brothers Band's final concert, performed on October 28, 2014, at New York's Beacon Theatre, is now being celebrated with the release of Final Concert 10-28-14, available as a 3xCD box set. Curated by Warren Haynes, the remastered recording spans 29 tracks and includes a 16-page booklet with exclusive photos and liner notes. The concert, divided into three sets, shows the band's extensive legacy, featuring classic tracks like 'Mountain Jam', 'One Way Out', 'Statesboro Blues' and 'Melissa'. Founding members Gregg Allman, Jaimoe, and Butch Trucks were joined by Haynes, Derek Trucks, Marc Quinones and Oteil Burbridge, making for a lineup that masterfully honoured the band's roots. The Allman Brothers Band's signature blend of southern rock and blues. This is a fitting farewell to their storied career with both nostalgia and exceptional musicianship. The final track, 'Trouble No More', closes the set and the band's legacy on an emotional note.

Review: America is a legendary rock trio that burst onto the scene in the early 70s with their iconic debut America (Friday Music 9001), featuring the hit 'A Horse With No Name.' Their success continued with chart-topping singles that led Warner Records to release their first best-of collection, History/America's Greatest Hits in 1976. Produced by George Martin, the album included hits like 'Ventura Highway,' 'Tin Man,' 'Sister Golden Hair' and 'Lonely People.' This multi-platinum compilation is now available for the first time on Translucent red vinyl with fine mastered from original tapes by Joe Reagoso that preserve the warmth of their classic original tracks.

Review: Today, pop stars use visual vehicles to further their reach, image and reputation every day, but back when A Hard Day's Night arrived, the idea of casting a band in a musical movie in which they played themselves, produced simultaneously with a studio album, was still more than novel. Largely unproven territory, the runaway success of this concept would go on to set a precedent. 36 hours in the lives of the group as they prepare for a TV performance, it not only breaks the theatrical fourth wall, it speaks to what was then an emerging appetite among fans to see more rounded, 3D renditions of their idols - now mainstreamed. Inspiring countless TV and cinema releases, from Ferry Cross The Mersey with Gerry and the Pacemakers, to the Monkees' series, A Hard Day's Night remains one of the best examples of the Beatles as revolutionary pop stars.

Review: Boz Scaggs' 1969 album, blending Southern rock, blues and r&b, wasn't a commercial success but it set the stage for his future successes. Recorded at Muscle Shoals with co-producer Jann Wenner, the album captures the raw energy and magic of a remarkable collaboration. Scaggs' smooth, mellow vocals blend seamlessly with the legendary Muscle Shoals rhythm section, led by Duane Allman's iconic guitar work. The album spans multiple genresifrom country-tinged 'Waiting for a Train' to the sultry blues of 'Loan Me a Dime'. The latter, in particular, became a standout, with its extended, fiery guitar solos and a signature groove that captured the imagination of FM rock stations. The album's charm lies in its organic, unpretentious feel, as Scaggs and the musicians create something truly magical over six days of spontaneous recording. It's a celebration of Southern soul with a West Coast twist and it remains a fascinating glimpse into an artist finding his voice in the heart of Muscle Shoals.

Review: Arriving into a chilly November 2011, 50 Words For Snow brought the first new material from the famously reclusive and enigmatic Kate Bush in more than five years, since 2005's stunner, Aerial. Immediately hitting No.5 in the UK album charts, the record would make Bush the first ever female recording artist to have a top five LP in each of the preceding five decades, which speaks volumes about her longevity and consistency. Here Bush roots herself in jazz-tinged electronica and in many ways 50 Words is a perfect follow on from the preceding Aerial. Again, it sounds as though the opening notes of each track are seeds to be planted, what grows from this is really down to an organic process, often surprising us where things wind up, until we remember the genius responsible.

Review: This comprehensive special edition of this classic album comes across eight sides of vinyl and captures the iconic band at the peak of their early career. Performing in the nation's capital, Chicago delivered a wonderfully dynamic set that showcases their unique fusion of rock, jazz, and brass. It features plenty of great work from the band's well known and distinctive horn section and intricate arrangements. A magnificently captured live recording, it features hits from their early albums such as Chicago Transit Authority and Chicago II, and also takes in fan favourites like 'A Song For Richard & His Friends' and 'Beginnings.' The performance is a testament to Chicago's musical versatility and powerful live presence and this version of it takes you right back to the heart of it all.

Review: This 1977 album marked a sublime chapter in the trio's career, showing their unparalleled vocal harmonies and masterful musicianship. Often hailed as their most accessible album, it seamlessly blends folk-rock sensibilities with heartfelt lyricism. Reissued on pristine 180-gram vinyl, the warmth of this record shines through every groove, providing a listening experience as timeless as the music itself. Opening with 'Shadow Captain', the outfit sets the tone with rich vocal layers and Russ Kunkel's understated yet captivating percussion. Tracks like 'See The Changes' and 'Carried Away' exemplify their ability to create beauty through simplicity, with Nash's songwriting and Crosby's harmonies reaching extraordinary heights. The album's emotional centerpiece, 'Cathedral', is a profound and reflective masterpiece, echoing the introspective brilliance of their earlier work while standing out as one of Nash's crowning achievements. Songs like 'Anything At All' and 'Just A Song Before I Go' further underscore the trio's knack for blending authenticity with melodic perfection. Even with moments like 'Fair Game' and 'I Give You Give Blind' slightly veering toward experimentation, the album remains cohesive and compelling. From the poignant storytelling to the impeccable sound quality of this vinyl reissue it endures as an essential in the folk-rock canon.

Review: The debut solo album by David Crosby of Crosby, Stills & Nash fame, If I Could Only Remember My Name is an ironic title for an artist first striking out on their commercial own. But despite its faux-amnesiac title, this freak-folk opus is actually a striking claim to, not a loss of, personal musical identity. Following the success of 1970's Deja Vu with Stills & Nash, Crosby sought to expound on that album's methodology - hard psychedelic drugs, brushes with insanity, copious studio time - to produce a crisp, profound and multifaceted vision on the intersection of blues, folk and collective music-making, with every legend from Neil Young to Joni Mitchell to Graham Nash in tow. The highlight has to be, above all, 'Tamalpais High (At About 3)'.

Review: A four-CD career retrospective of Motorhead's iconic guitarist, coupled with a 320-page book, is set for release via BMG. Authoured by veteran rock journalist Kris Needs, in collaboration with Clarke's widow Mariko Fujiwara, the book provides a detailed account of Clarke's life and career. The narrative begins with Clarke's formative years, from his early musical inspirations to his significant collaborations, including recording with Curtis Knight. The story delves into his pivotal years with Motorhead (1976-1982), the formation of Fastway, and his solo endeavours. Personal insights from Mariko and Clarke's close friends enrich the biography, offering a look into his life beyond the stage. The CDs include The Early Years, featuring tracks from Zeus, Continuous Performance, and the Muggers. Motorhead Era, highlighting hits like 'Ace Of Spades,' unreleased demos and Eddie's work with Girlschool, Fastway, which showcases the band's evolution with demos, remixes, and tracks from eight albums and the Solo Years, focusing on his solo albums and collaborations. Stories don't come much more comprehensive than this.

Review: Rhino Records delivers a vibrant reissue of Fleetwood Mac's daring double-album, Tusk (1979), now available exclusively on 180g Transparent Light Green 2LP vinyl. This genre-defying masterpiece exemplifies the band's willingness to explore new territories. Lindsey Buckingham's intricate arrangements and diverse influences infuse the album with elements of pop, rock, new wave, and disco. Stevie Nicks shines with powerful vocals on standout tracks like the emotive ballad 'Sara' and the anthemic title track. While initially compared to the monumental success of Rumours, Tusk has since garnered a dedicated following for its boldness and artistic depth. Achieving Platinum certification and topping the UK charts, this reissue celebrates the album's enduring legacy and cements its status as a cult classic.

Review: Foreigner's 1981 album 4 is a masterclass in soft rock excellence, and its reissue on vinyl reaffirms its status as a classic still. The album, known for its impeccable production and iconic tracks, catches Foreigner at the peak of their powers. From the high-octane opener 'Night Life' to the anthemic 'Juke Box Hero,' the band delivers a blend of powerful rock and emotional balladry that remains timeless. 'Waiting for a Girl Like You' stands out as one of the greatest power ballads ever, with its atmospheric sound and Lou Gramm's silky vocals. 'Urgent,' another highlight, exells with its tight interplay between Mick Jones' guitar and the unforgettable saxophone solo, while 'I'm Gonna Win' and 'Woman in Black' exemplify the band's ability to craft songs full of determination and soul. Each track on 4 feels meticulously crafted, with infectious melodies and hooks that have resonated with audiences for decades. The vinyl reissue brings a warmth and depth to the recording that enhances the listening experience, making still stand out as an iconic rock album that no yacht should be without.

Review: Ace Frehley's 1989 recording arrives at a curious crossroads in his career. It's bold, swaggering, and drenched in late-80s hard rock sheen, but there's a thread of defiance running through its polished surface. Frehley, who had long stood in the shadow of his former band KISS, approaches the project with the energy of someone eager to remind the world of his prowess. His trademark guitar flourishes are as electrifying as everisharp, crunchy and steeped in effortless cool. Guest spots from former Kiss drummer Peter Criss and Skid Row members inject bursts of collaborative dynamism, making this not just a solo venture but a communal flex of rock-and-roll camaraderie. Frehley sounds like a man with something to proveiand he delivers, guitar in hand, unapologetic and relentless.

Review: The 3LP version of BBC Collection highlights the Best of Rory Gallagher recorded concerts by the British public service broadcaster. Standouts include 'Cradle Rock' and 'Tattoo'd Lady' from 'Sounds of The Seventies' (1973), 'Shin Kicker' from 'BBC In Concert' (1979), and 'Continental Op' from the 1986 Paul Jones Blues Show. Each track exemplifies Gallagher's extraordinary guitar work and raw, powerful vocals. This collection not only spotlights Gallagher's enduring influence but also provides a journey through his evolving sound, from the gritty blues of his early days to the more refined, yet equally intense performances of the 80s. Many will say, Rory Gallagher's exceptional talent and his significant contribution to rock and blues music is most shown in his live performances. To many this is one of the most important collections of BBC recorded music. Certainly, the most extensive.

Review: This collection plunges into Godley & Creme's eccentric post-10cc years, a whirlwind of boundary-pushing pop and inventive production. Tracks like 'An Englishman in New York' burst with surreal humour and layered arrangements, showcasing their knack for storytelling through off-kilter melodies. Meanwhile, 'Snack Attack' plays with genre, blending funk-laden grooves and absurdist charm. These songs aren't just quirky diversions-they're windows into the duo's fearless approach to dismantling pop conventions. Packed with vocal harmonies, synth experiments, and a sprinkle of the absurd, this box set is a reminder of how Godley & Creme rewrote the rules for art-pop.

Electric Lady Studios: A Jimi Hendrix Ision (Blu-Ray)
Review: There has long been an obsession in rock circles with Jimi Hendrix's fourth, unreleased album, a set he imagined to be a double or triple set and recorded a wealth of tracks for in the New York studio he created, Electric Lady Studios, over ten months in 1969-70. This fantastic box set, comprising three CDs, a Blu-ray featuring a new documentary and 5.1 surround sound mixes, and a booklet full of contextualising liner notes, tells the story of Hendrix's final recording sessions in full. Some 29 tracks of the 38 on show - a mixture of studio demos, completed tracks, alternative versions and jams (including one astonishing, 26-minute medley) - have never been released before. Properly remastered and mixed, it offers an authoritative glimpse of what would have undoubtedly become a classic rock album.

Review: Newly, radically reimagined remixes created from John Lennon's classic song, Mind Games. These nine Meditation Mixes craft their own space while maintaining firm and authentic roots in John Lennon's original recording. Each have been radically altered, slowed down and extended, ranging from five to ten to over 33 minutes, allowing the soundtrack to wash over the listener and provide a relaxing deep listening experience. Four tracks are presented as binaural versions which each focus on different types of brain waves: Beta, Delta, Gamma and Theta. Named 'Mind', 'Space', 'Spirit' and 'Love', these exploit the response of the ear to left and right frequencies, which constructively combine to produce a new frequency, which in turn, as they say, activates beneficial brain patterns. Produced by Sean Lennon, these contemporary Lennon versions aim to positively impact the contemporary anxiety-racked listener, whose appetite for deep listening has only understandably increased in recent years.

Review: This compilation gathers some of John Lennon's most powerful and politically charged songs, offering a glimpse into the heart and mind of a musical revolutionary. Spanning his solo career, the collection features tracks like 'Gimme Some Truth', 'Imagine', and 'Working Class Hero', each one a testament to Lennon's fearless songwriting and his unwavering commitment to social justice. The album's raw energy and emotional intensity are palpable, reflecting the turbulent times in which these songs were written. From the anti-war anthem 'Give Peace A Chance' to the poignant ballad 'Love', 'Gimme Some Truth' is a reminder of Lennon's enduring legacy as a voice for peace, love, and social change.

Review: On April 17, 1994, Led Zeppelin's main songwriters reunited for the Alexis Korner Memorial Concert in Buxton, England. In August, they recorded performances in London, Wales, and Morocco featuring Egyptian and Moroccan orchestration of classic Led Zeppelin tracks along with four new songs. These performances were broadcast as a 90-minute MTV special UnLedded which led to a successful tour starting in February 1995. This newly reissued release captures an exceptional performance from that tour and includes both new material and Middle Eastern-influenced renditions of Zeppelin classics like 'Bring It On Home,' 'Ramble On,' 'The Song Remains the Same,' 'Black Dog' and 'Kashmir.'

Released 1000 days before the album itself, the single 'Dark Matter' marked Pearl Jam's return to chart-topping glory for the first time since 'Given To Fly' in January-February 1998. The album, now finally released, has swiftly garnered praise from fans old and new. Laden with the band's signature riffs and powerful grooves, every track, including 'Dark Matter,' showcases Eddie Vedder's iconic vocals and confirms they still have what it takes to make a mark in the metal world.

Review: Light In The Attic teams up with Laurie Anderson and the Lou Reed Archive for a thrilling retrospective, Why Don't You Smile Now: Lou Reed At Pickwick Records 1964-65. An expansive selection of songs all written by Lou Reed, during his mid-60s stint as the staff songwriter for the long-defunct label Pickwick Records, this is a rare glimpse of a master rock musician stepping out of the limelight over the course of 25 songs, yet still letting the form and contour of his voice and sensibility be heard. All this was achieved before Reed had at all launched his career with the Velvets; it may indeed be said that this pubescent 60s period was the firelighter to Reed's flame, as the label specialised in soundalike records that emulated the major pop hits of the day - it's no wonder Reed would absorb such emulations and take them in as his own, albeit with a Century-defining twist. Channelling everything from teenybopper pop to soul-inflected garage rock, whether byJeannie Larimore, The Hi-Lifes or The Hollywoods, we get a thorough look-in here as to what made Reed and his contemporaries tick, and what Reed made tick in turn, before the fame.

Review: Santana's Abraxas stands as the definitive Latin rock masterpiece, capturing the band's vibrant and groundbreaking sound at its creative zenith. Released in 1970, this album showcases Santana's blend of psychedelic rock and Afro-Latin rhythms, a combination that moved audiences and earned Abraxas a lasting place in music history. The album features nine tracks that brilliantly highlight the talents of the band, particularly the 'Holy Latin Rock Trinity': Carlos Santana's emotive guitar work, Gregg Rolie's powerful Hammond organ, and the dynamic percussion of Jose "Chepito" Areas and Michael Carabello. Standout tracks include the chart-topping 'Black Magic Woman/Gypsy Queen,' the dance-inducing 'Oye Como Va,' and the soulful 'Samba Pa Ti,' each a testament to the band's skill in blending diverse musical elements. The Mobile Fidelity reissue, sourced from the original analogue master tapes, brings exceptional clarity and depth to this classic, making it an audiophiles and Santana fans ideal version to get.

Review: Mobile Fidelity's 180g 33RPM LP reissue elevates the album's sonic experience by sourcing it from the original analogue master tapes. Pressed at Fidelity Record Pressing, the reissue boasts pristine sound, revealing the intricate details of Santana's dynamic arrangements. Carlos Santana's guitar work, rich in clarity and precision, soars with newfound definition, making his signature solos and leads stand out even more vividly. Inner Secrets, Santana's 1978 album, marked a significant shift towards the rock mainstream, featuring three Top 100 singles and showcasing a more focused, streamlined sound. This period saw Santana transition from their earlier fusion-heavy style to more accessible, radio-friendly material, packing complex passages and passionate performances into tighter song structures, with no track exceeding six minutes.Notable contributions from new band members, including Pete Escovedo on percussion and Chris Solberg on multi-instrumental duties, further shape the album's sound, complementing Graham Lear's sharp drumming and David Margen's groovy bass lines. Highlights include covers like Buddy Holly's 'Well All Right' and the Four Tops' 'One Chain (Don't Make No Prison)'. Greg Walker's raw, soulful vocals bring an edge to the music, embodying the "street and church" quality Carlos Santana admired. Inner Secrets serves as a powerful milestone in Santana's evolution.

Review: Carlos Santana was one of the most prolific artists of the 1970s and 80s, and later in that period is when he released his fourth solo album. After a relentless pace of an average of more than an album per year since his band's 1969 debut, this Grammy-winning effort was his last release before a well-earned break in that run. The largely instrumental album showcases Santana's signature guitar tones with plenty of signature soulful energy and masterful control over his playing. He was supported by a stellar lineup including Tony Williams, Alphonso Johnson, Buddy Miles and Orestes Vilat and Mobile Fidelity's limited reissue presents the album with audiophile sound quality that reveals enhanced clarity and the intricate details of Santana's playing.

Review: The 1973 album Love Devotion Surrender marks the singular collaboration between guitar legends Carlos Santana and Mahavishnu John McLaughlin, resulting in a spiritually charged masterpiece. This reissue from Mobile Fidelity unties both of the artist's quest for enlightenment, drawing inspiration from John Coltrane's work and their shared devotion to Indian guru Sri Chinmoy. Sourced from the original analog master tapes, this reissue showcases the album's intricate sonic landscape with remarkable clarity. The dynamic interplay between Santana and McLaughlin, with Santana predominantly on the left and McLaughlin on the right, creates an wonderful live listening experience. The album’s varied tempos and tones, ranging from delicate acoustic passages to powerful bursts of percussion, are brought to life with extraordinary realism. Featuring interpretations of Coltrane classics like 'A Love Supreme' and 'Naima,' as well as original compositions, the album blends jazz, rock, and gospel elements. Larry Young, credited as Khalid Yasin, delivers standout organ accompaniment, adding depth to the improvisational lines and ecstatic chords that define the record. Love Devotion Surrender remains a transcendent journey through sound, driven by two of music’s most visionary artists.

This concept album transcends time, earning its place as one of the greatest records ever made. The album opens with the gentle 'Bookends Theme,' setting a reflective tone before plunging into the experimental soundscapes of 'Save The Life Of My Child,' which brilliantly incorporates dialogue, street noises and an eerie echo of 'The Sound of Silence.' Review: Going on to become the biggest selling record in America in 1979, Supertramp's sixth album Breakfast In America is perhaps the quintessential historic example of a British album destined to "break the USA". As if forecasted in advance, 1979 heard the band take capital advantage of the bilateral "special relationship" formed between the two nations since the War, a principle which was of course thereafter reflected in the rock industry. After Led Zep but long before Sting, Supertramp would here spawn the likes of 'The Logical Song', 'Goodbye Stranger', and 'Take The Long Way Home', all of which were smash hits in the US but comparatively denervated back home, where they would only scrape the top ten in the Charts. Despite such an imbalance in successes, this show from the Pavillon de Paris captures the band back in Europe that year, both filmed and recorded in December 1979.

Review: Neil Young's Ragged Glory is a masterful return to form, blending raw power with a grungy edge that solidified his status as the "Godfather of Grunge." Released in 1990, this album with Crazy Horse is one of his most distortion-heavy works, offering a gritty, jam-packed sound that contrasts sharply with his earlier folk and country rock roots. Songs like 'F*!#kin' Up' and 'Over and Over' showcase Neil's ability to lock into extended grooves, delivering music that's both intense and heartfelt. One of rhe album's standout tracks, 'Mansion on the Hill,' carries a nostalgic weight, while 'Country Home' evokes warmth and memories of simpler times. The instrumentation is where Ragged Glory truly shines. Each track, is loaded with powerful guitar solos and heavy riffs. Neil's collaboration with Crazy Horse is unfiltered, spontaneous, and fiercely alive. With the closing track 'Mother Earth (Natural Anthem)' closing the album out in style, Ragged Glory remains a triumph. Its a raw, unapologetic album that shows Neil Young at his grungiest best.
