Review: Vaughn Benjamin is the voice of Midnite and Akae Beka and was a prolific reggae vocalist, poet, teacher and scholar known for his photographic memory and creativity. He released over 70 albums in 25 years while always discussing broad, detailed topics with unmatched precision. Living Testament is his final album, recorded shortly before his death in November 2019. In October 2019, Vaughn recorded the 11 tracks at Ras Biblical's Trinity Farm studio in Grass Valley, California, over two days alongside 11 musicians including Tuff Lion and Manuel "Go A Chant" Guerra. The result is sure to endure through the ages as a fine example of roots reggae storytelling.

Review: Stockholm-based multi-instrumentalist and composer Art Longo impresses here with Echowah Island, a new album sure to wind its way into your affections. It was crafted over years in his home studio and is "psychotropical pop" drawing deep inspiration from late 80s music and dub. The album's lush soundscape evokes orange sunsets and ocean breezes and is layered with spring reverb, space echo and wah-wah effects that smooth out the edges as the steady pulse of vintage drum machines moves things on down low. A standout feature is Claudio Jonas, whose ethereal vocals recall classic French femme fatale singers of the 60s. Her poetic, kaleidoscopic lyrics add to a nostalgic dream world that gently bends reality and makes his both escapist and thought-provoking.

It's joyful, party-fuelling stuff but usually with a social message snuck in for good measure, which is just how we like it. Throw in some bonus studio and live tracks on this double deluxe RSD version and it really can't be Beat.

It is a true classic of its genre that now comes on nice coloured wax that looks as good as it sounds.

Review: The Congos formed in the mid-70s by Cedric Myton and Roydel "Roy" Johnson and emerged during reggae's Rasta movement. Cedric, whose music career began in the rocksteady era, co-founded the Tartans before forming The Congos with Roydel, who previously sang with Ras Michael and the Sons of Negus. Review: Robert Dallas's latest album is another doozy for lovers of real reggae. Each soulful vocal track is paired with a companion dub version by Hermit Dubz which makes this a dual-pronged attack with jams for all caissons. Dallas's signature style shines throughout as he blends conscious lyrics with rich melodies while Hermit Dubz's expertly crafted interpretations add depth and dimension. In all, this means this one is a perfect fusion of traditional reggae vibes and modern production techniques.

Review: While born in Jamaica, like many of the Windrush Generation Robert Thompson AKA Dandy made his name in the UK, subsequently making some of the earliest - and most successful - British Ska records with the assistance of Australian entrepreneur and Crossbow Records founder Millie Small. This fine compilation, one of the first to showcase the work of a UK-based ska star, tells the story of Thompson's work in 1964 and '65, much of it alongside fellow vocalist Keith Foster as Sugar N Dandy. There's much to enjoy throughout, with highlights including the organ solo-sporting delight of 'Oh Dear', the fuzzy jazziness of 'I'm Not Crying Now', the Mod-friendly 'Blues Got a Hold On Me' and his superb ska cover of Hermans Hermits' hit 'I'm Into Something Good'.
