Review: Sometimes it's just too difficult to contain our excitement; we're quaking in our boots at news of Khruangbin's next release, with the Texan three-piece this time lending their alt-indie-funk mastery to vocal frontage by Leon Bridges. The humorously titled lead single 'B-side' is emblematic of their stated aim here - to redefine "how people perceive Texas music i that beautiful marriage of country and r'n'b i and really paying homage to that." The sonic result? Bubbling bass and wahhy riffs, over a ghostly and misty relaxers' beat. Its hook digs into our thighs deeper than a Sheriff's steel spurs, and fittingly, it's music video is themed after a 19th Century western town.

Review: Delve beyond cumbia's usual bounds and explore psychedelic dimensions in modern tropical music courtesy of this, La Banda Chuska's debut single on Names You Can Trust. It offers a window into this evolving sonic landscape, blending as it does rip-roaring guitar riffs with contemporary flair. Picture the B-52s navigating a twisted Pacific-Peruvian time warp, bongos in hand, and this will give you a good idea of what to expect. This vibrant adventure encapsulates La Banda Chuska's colourful fusion of sounds and will have you surfing through a wave of tropical vibes in no time.

Review: Some six years (give or take a few months) on from the release of their superb debut album Psychedelic Disco Cumbia, self-styled 'NYC tropical supergroup' Locobeach are back! This time round, they've treated us to a genuine rarity: a rarely spotted double seven-inch EP. All four tracks have, apparently, been extensively road-tested in their live sets and become, in their words, "fan favourites". They begin in stellar fashion via a head-nodding, cumbia-powered cover of Cure classic 'Close To You' (it's genuinely great - one of the best covers we've heard for a while), before imagining a suitably tropical spy chase on the urgent and percussion-rich 'Idea Desesperada'. On 45 number two you'll find the cheeky cumbia-soul-meets-yacht-rock cheekiness of 'Isabella' and the surf-flecked, high-octane tropical fun of 'U.S Marshall'.

Review: Bolivian psyche-surf rock, anyone? Welcome to the world of Los Laser, a beguiling yet immediately infectious outfit. Vuelven! first hit in the 1970s, at which point most of our fact-checked knowledge about this release comes to a sudden stop. And all the better for it. Rather than getting bogged down in brief biopics, then, let's just say this is definitely one for the guitar-loving diggers, who won't find it many other places. Sonically speaking there's plenty of reference points to what was happening across South America musically at the time. While steeped in conservative traditions (often due to the enforced religion through colonialism situation), the decades after World War II were fertile ground for anti-establishment youth movements across the world, and this continent was no different. So, while the exotic lyrics and jangling six strings don't scream "smash the system" today, you'd better believe this was well against the grain back in 1971.

Review: Discodelic and Groovie Records unveil a pair of rare 1970s Panamanian gems here with forgotten tracks from The Meditators, and Los Misticos. Originally recorded for radio and left in storage, these Latin psych funk bombs capture the underground spirit of Panama's vibrant music scene from more than 50 years ago. Licensed through Tamayo Records, these songs have been beautifully mastered and now the long-lost recordings, which barely made it to vinyl the first time around, become available for all who are keen to drop the heat and learn about Panama's hidden musical treasures at the same time.

Los Sabios - "Trip To The Moon" (3:02)
Los Eliceos - "La Cabana" (2:54)
Review: Mexico city label Discodelic shares the first edition in their Eclipse series and sublabel, which focuses on obscure and undocumented or under-documented Mexican groups. On the first of two new 45s, the label focus on Los Sabios and Los Eliceos, two obscure monster Latin funk psych groups who recorded in the mid 1970s. Packed with a wowwing lead guitar focus and a vintage psychedelic baste, Los Sabios' 'Trip To The Moon' takes its name from the first ever sci-fi film, and aptly lays back while playing through a distinctive Latin pulse and swarthy funk dust-cloud. Eliceos' 'La Cabana', meanwhile, teleports us right on down to the poolside beach hut, as a chuffing electric organ line buzzes atop a bustling drummed undercurrent.

Review: Trip To The Moon by Los Sabios kicks off this cosmic 7" with its hypnotic rhythms and swirling synths, blending classic cumbia with spacey, psychedelic vibes. The A-side track is a journey into the unknown, pulsating with infectious grooves that feel like they've been beamed in from another galaxy. On the flip side, Los Eliceos deliver 'La CabaNa,' a more grounded yet equally entrancing tune, driven by tight percussion and warm, melodic guitar lines. Both tracks offer a fresh take on traditional cumbia, making this release a must-have for collectors and dance floor enthusiasts alike.

Review: Los Syn were formed in 1966 in Chile by four young Americans whose parents were stationed in the South American country. All attended Santiago's Nido de Aguilas school and decided to form a band to perform at a school dance. Following their debut, they entered and won a battle of the bands contest, securing a record deal prize. Their sole legacy remains this single, released by Philips in Chile in a very limited run. Finding an original copy is nearly impossible. It's a treasure showcasing the talent and brilliance of four teenagers who, for just over a year, were enchanted with genuine garage music infused with tenderness and finesse. This small miracle returns to life through a limited and numbered edition of 500 copies, including a booklet recounting the band's story by member Gary Pilgram.

Review: Ultra lo-fi stereo funkage from L'Eclair, the latest signage to Swiss label Rock This Town. 'Cruise Control' is a muddy and smoggy six-track instrumental disco-funk EP, with seven members laying down parts on wah-wah, space horn, and synth. It sounds as if a mega-talented disco troupe were performing in the next building, but they could only be heard through thick insulation or some kind of muffling foam. The tone is ultimately pleasing, blurry and cloudlike, as if this were disco beamed to us from heaven as opposed to the material world. The softest cuts, such as 'Safari In D', are our highlights.

Review: La Femme's Rock Machine marks a bold new chapter for the French neo-psych band, delivering their first full-length album in English. After exploring various sonic territories with Paradigmes and Teatro Lucido, the band, led by Marlon Magnee and Sacha Got, revisits their signature new wave and synth-driven style, blending it with influences from 80s and 90s Anglo rock. The album kicks off with the stylish, glam-infused single 'Clover Paradise', setting the tone for a project that seamlessly fuses genres like electro, surf rock, and disco, all wrapped in a punk spirit. From the synthwave of 'Sweet Babe' to the rebellious energy of 'My Generation', La Femme's sound is eclectic yet cohesive. Tracks like 'Venus' evoke a nostalgic mix of 60s psych-pop, while 'Love Is Over' channels the danceable grooves of the Madchester era. Throughout Rock Machine, the band's creativity shines as they confidently experiment with arena-sized rock styles and cinematic soundscapes. This album proves La Femme's ability to transcend language and genre, reinforcing their status as musical innovators.

Born from guitarist Shana Cleveland's battle with breast cancer, the album traverses themes of life, death, and transformation with haunting beauty. The band's sonic palette, led by Cleveland's ethereal vocals and anchored by urgent rhythms, paints a vivid portrait of chaos and ecstasy. Produced entirely by women, the album embodies a fierce femininity, embracing vulnerability and triumph in equal measure. With lush chamber pop melodies and searing guitar solos, News of the Universe shows La Luz's pioneering spirit and unwavering commitment to artistic authenticity. It's a record that boldly defies expectations, delivering a sonic journey that is both devastating and euphoric - a true triumph in the face of adversity.

Review: Seattle, so much to answer for. The capital of the Pacific Northwest has had a difficult history in terms of its cultural capital, from a thriving pre-war jazz scene to regulatory changes that drove out many clubs and turned music into a sideshow for restaurants, to the beginnings of punk which then led to the explosion of grunge, if one thing is for sure, you should always listen keenly to what's coming out of the city. La Paire D'Or are a case in point. Here with their debut "waxing", as the Hex Enduction label put it, it's very difficult to figure out how to describe or even label what's here beyond "trippier than most". Steeped in psychedelia, owing as much to synths and gritty garage guitars, at times their tracks are thick, sludgy, perhaps even growly, in other moments they seem to be floating off on a bed of helium, destination unknown.

Review: A cultish band who there at the dawn of psychedelic rock in Mexico and had a mind-bendingly beautiful sound full of revolutionary potential. In the late 60s when they formed and in the early 70s when this self-titled debut LP of theirs was released, the band were inspired by hippy counterculture and by politics. They're named after Mexican revolutionary Emiliano Zapata whose influence still has a far-reaching influence today - the Zapatista social movement, with its far-left and anti-neoliberal ideology, takes its name from him. They were also at the forefront of La Onda (The Wave), a cultural and political movement that spawned Mexico's answer to Woodstock, Avandaro. Sonically, you can't get a better fit for a festival of that sort - you'll hear that they are quintessentially psych; loose and jangly with hip-shaking rhythms. Opener 'Nasty Sex' - their biggest international hit - works around a hypnotic riff and has a Cream-meets-surf rock tone; 'Shit City' cranks the free-spirited vibe up even further, while 'Platicas Con Un Rey' shows they could tackle a more pastoral psych sound, too. Few bands nail the true psychedelic rock sound this well.

Review: L.A. Witch is back with a marked evolution in their sound that pulls in aspects of garage rock and post-punk while exploring existential themes of love, devotion and subservience. Recorded in Paris, the trio of Sade Sanchez, Irita Pai and Ellie English push their craft to new realms with icy instrumentation and introspective lyrics. Tracks like 'Icicle' channel early goth vibes while '777' delves into fatalistic passion. The album also, we're told, explores the symbolic connection between women and dogs with themes of sacrifice and loyalty. All this makes it rather menacing yet oddly romantic, so DOGGOD revitalises the band's trademark sound while taking them into darker territories with haunting overtones.

Review: Independent Spanish label Munster Records benevolently reissue the sole record by Venezuelan psych rock band Ladies Water Closet. Made up of Adib Casta, Jaime Seijas, Mario Seijas and Stephen Scott, Ladies W.C. were prominent members of many other bands in the 60s psychedelia heyday, and yet the Water Closet was by far their most unserious project, consisting in ragtag twang-offs, dusty drum fill fandangos and yet quite amazing vocal performances, the combination of which factors likely went on to cause one online user to rightly call it "the most collectible record from Venezuela". No wonder they say so: only tens of copies were originally printed in 1968, and a reissue hasn't surfaced again since 1999. The wah pedal is really put to the metal here, so this must be a special privy midden indeed; but the cinematic synth moments are impeccable too, as on 'The Time Of Hope Is Gone'.

With their roots in Anatolian poetry and culture - but focusing on a club-oriented, uncompromising rock - this is a remarkable album of previously-thought-to-be-impossible fusions, rendering Turkish music danceable and festival-ready, but also refusing to be pigeonholed in any easy manner of categoric speaking. Review: Large Plants made quite a splash with their debut album on Ghost Box last year. Primarily the project of Jack Sharp, it was a noticeable swerve for the synth-heavy label towards classic 70s hard rock, but somehow it all fits together. That sense of destiny continues wholeheartedly with the swiftly delivered follow-up The Thorn, which features a shift in approach towards a more psychedelic, folk-inclined and prog-tickled sound. There's still plenty of heft in the rhythm section, but Sharp sounds much more pastoral in his tone, and the songwriting on this outstanding sophomore album follows suit.

Hit play on House of Pain, the group's second studio album, and it smacks you in the face with all the subtlety of Jimi Hendrix at Woodstock, guitars thundering out of the starting blocks before veering off into these distorted, harsh, and gritty six string solo masterclasses. It's a heavy, heaving, hulk of a record that's as scuzzy as it is trippy, the soundtrack to a hallucinatory night out where colours, sounds and senses are more memorable than the actual happenings. Like the swirling jump cuts in a deleted scene from Fear & Loathing In Las Vegas, there's no coming back from this one.

Review: Leaf Hound have been a staple of the heavy rock scene for decades, but this offering feels like a rebirth. A band often heralded as the pioneers of metal, their journey started in the early 70s, but it's their ability to keep evolving that stands out here. More than 50 years since their debut, the London-based band is back with their first studio album in over 15 years. And while many might think you can't teach an old dog new tricks, Leaf Hound have a few surprises left. The opening track, 'Burn The House Down,' feels like the start of a fire that only gets hotter as the album progresses. The kind of heavy, groovy riff that gives you a sense of nostalgia for the glory days of stoner rock, it's clear that the band still has that bite. As you hit the upbeat 'Yippee Ki Yay' and the harder-hitting 'Bold 'n' Easy,' it's impossible to ignore the fire in their belly. Sure, the lineup has changed over the years, but with Peter French still at the helm, the powerful vocals that originally defined Leaf Hound continue to ring out loud and clear. By the time you get to tracks like 'Thought Police' and 'Watching Life's Wheels,' the album begins to speak to the turbulent times we live in. There's no pretension here - just hard-hitting rock for hard-hitting times. Closing with the anthemic 'High Danger,' it's evident that Leaf Hound still have a lot to say and are far from fading away into obscurity.

Review: Long serving Anglo-Dutch masters of psychedelic and experimental soundscapes - formed in London in 1980 but who relocated, we couldn't possibly think why, to Amsterdam four years - Legendary Pink Dots return with an album that explores the anxieties and complexities of our increasingly digital world. Tracks like 'So Lonely In Heaven' and 'The Sound of the Bell' set the tone with their haunting melodies and atmospheric textures, while 'Dr. Bliss '25' and 'Sleight of Hand' delve into darker, more experimental territories. The album's lyrical themes explore the seductive nature of technology and the potential for isolation and alienation in a hyper-connected world. 'Choose Premium : First Prize' and 'Darkest Knight' offer a glimpse into the seductive promises of the digital realm, while 'Cold Comfort' and 'Wired High : Too Far To Fall' explore the darker side of technological dependence. Psychedelic soundscapes, introspective lyrics and experimental arrangements - that'll be acid-tinged business very much as usual, then.

Review: Lid was a project formed in the latter half of the 1990s by Daniel Cavanagh of UK greats Anathema, along with legendary vocalist Eric Wagner from US doom metal legends Trouble. Joining the two were Timothy & Tommy Reeves on bass & drums respectively. The fruit of this union emerged in 1997, with the classic sole album, In The Mushroom, combining the heavier rocking & melodic traits of both acts, plus an element of psychedelia. Along with what could be termed stoner rock, there was also a notable Beatles-esque quality to the project, which incidentally blends well with a stellar cover of the Beatles' classic, 'Don't Let Me Down', joining the cover of The Monkees' 'Randy Scouse Git' for a dynamic ride full of hooks, accomplished songwriting, and an injection of Wagner's poetic depth. In The Mushroom was produced by Eric Wagner, along with Vincent Wojno (having previously worked with Eric with Trouble). The album was mixed at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley, CA. This edition of In The Mushroom is presented on mid-price CD format including booklet with lyrics.

Review: The Lijadu Sisters and Numero Group have entered into a groundbreaking partnership focused on both reissue and reparation as a way of celebrating and reexamining the impact of the iconic artists. Identical twins Yeye Taiwo and the late Kehinde Lijadu were pioneers in Nigeria's cultural golden age who released five influential albums in the 1970s, thereby helping to shape their home nation's music for over 50 years. Their unique harmonies and innovative sound have inspired artists like David Byrne, Amaarae, and Jamie xx and first up in the reissue series is a remastered edition of their 1979 album Horizon Unlimited, featuring the hit 'Come On Home,' with their entire discography and previously unreleased material all to follow.

Review: Released in 1979 on Decca's Afrodisia imprint, Horizon Unlimited stands as a landmark in the Lijadu Sisters' discography. Produced by Fela Kuti's collaborator Odion Iruoje, and featuring BLO's Laolu Akins and Lemmy Jackson, this album blends raw funk with seductive electricity. The six tracks on this reissue are a masterclass in merging traditional rhythms with modern funk, exemplified in songs like 'Orere-Elejigbo,' 'Erora,' and 'Come On Home.' Each track opens with talking drums, weaving intricate percussion with fluid basslines and subtle synth tones. The Lijadu Sisters' harmonies remain the focal point, gliding over hypnotic grooves that maintain their freshness without becoming repetitive.

Review: Dominique Baumard's 2025 detective comedy drama, Les Regles de l'art, is a chuckle-inducing exploration of art theft and scandal, reenacting a legendary pilfering of paintings from the Musee d'Art Moderne in Paris in 2010. The plot centres on the trio of thieves who stole €100 million worth of works of art by Picasso, Matisse and Modigliani; they were sentenced to prison, but the paintings were never found. Now the OST by soundtrack artists Lionel LimiNana (more known for his chanson-adjacent project The LimiNanas) and David Menke (more associated with experimental electronica) surfaces. An intermixing of suspenseful legato syntheses and humoured pizzicati help them nail an eternal artistic conundrum - the tradeoff between authenticity of artifice.

Barrie Cadogan (guitar/vocals) has played with everyone from The The to Primal Scream, but this LP moves well away from indie templates, employing a freeform approach, experimenting with tempos, volumes and textures. Tracks like 'Spektator' and 'Sick 8' showcase their ability to build subtle momentum and then let it slip back, allowing space for intricate instrumentation and lots of vivid expression.

Review: London Fog is the name of a live album by The Doors, but is also the name of a rock band who brought all new energy back in their day in the 1960s. In 1965, the buzz of 'swinging London' saw the opening of the Goldfinger-inspired 007 Club at the London Hilton. Harold Sakata, famously known as Oddjob, served as the host with Mick Mortimore spinning records as the DJ. Tony Craig and the Men About Town were the resident band and were captivating audiences at the city's most sought-after venue. Craig later formed the band London Fog and continued to perform regularly at the 007 Club while also recording this album full of soul and hard rock.

This Afro-Cuban-funk gem combines psych rock with deep funk, cementing its status as a 70s Cuban masterpiece and a favourite with those who know. Despite releasing only two albums and a few singles, the band was highly influential in Cuba and gained international recognition through 2000s compilations. Produced by Raul Gomez and featuring Cuban music heavyweights, the album blends traditional Cuban Son with funk and psychedelic elements. The reissue uses the beautiful bird illustration cover art from the Mexican Pentagrama Records release.

Review: Lotus's debut album, Synthbuljong, released on El Paraiso Records, is a stunning trip through the realms of free jazz and psychedelic rock. Led by percussionist Olaf Olsen (Fra Det Onde, Needlepoint), the bandifeaturing electric bassist Chris Holm, Danish alto saxophonist Signe Emmeluth, and electric guitarist Karl Bjoraidelivers a genre-defying experience. The album is a sonic adventure, blending elements of Coltrane-inspired intensity with Sonic Youth's raw energy. The opener sets a high bar with its dynamic improvisation, while the serene 'Ballade' provides a reflective contrast. The seventeen-minute 'Synthgitar' has the band's intricate interplay and boundary-pushing creativity on full display. Recorded partly during a live performance in Bergen, Synthbuljong is full of vibrant energy that shows Lotus's performances, fusing their diverse backgrounds into an amazing experience. This release offers a lush, organic sound that is sure to impress to those who listen.

Review: Love's Now Playing on translucent red vinyl is a compelling collection from the iconic American rock band, formed in Los Angeles in 1965 and - helmed by Arthur Lee - one of the first racially diverse rock bands in the US. Their music, a blend of garage, folk-rock, and psychedelia, never reached massive commercial success but earned critical acclaim and has grown in popularity in time. It's effectively a greatest hits comp and from the epic longing 'My Little Red Book' and 'Alone Again O' - which The Damned subsequently turned into a hit in the 80s - to the more introspective 'A House Is Not a Motel" and 'You Set the Scene', it's the perfect starting point for those wishing to dip a toe into these rich creative waters.

Written and recorded in collaboration with her long-time bandmate and husband Nicke Andersson (vocalist/guitarist for hard rock Swedes The Hellacopters and drummer for legendary death metal entity Entombed), V continues the band's unique coalescence of accessible, grooving AOR emboldened by elements of classic doom metal and proto-psych. Complete with macabre, gothic lyrics delivered with Platow's incomparable, sultry, almost Wiccan cadence, the project offers a hypnotic dirge of horror delivered with a gentle hand.

Review: Originally released as a private press in 1978 (but sounding more akin to 1970), this is a terrific example of British hard rock/heavy prog in the same vein as Wishbone Ash or Thin Lizzy, dominated by killer twin guitar attacks. With roots in the West Yorkshire pub rock scene and led by ace guitar player Duncan McFarlane, Luigi Ana Da Boys recorded their first album, Feeling The Ceiling, at a local studio in Leeds. 1000 copies were self-released in a plain white sleeve with a single-sided credits insert, as the band didn't have the money for a picture sleeve. One of those copies ended up with John Peel, who raved about the band and played a couple of songs on his Radio 1 show.

Review: One of the most remarkable things about Saturday Night Special, the 1975 debut album by the Lyman Woodard Organisation, is how two musicians - accompanied by various sessions drummers - could make such a rich and layered set. It still impresses that Lyman Woodard and Ron English could create so many superbly evocative and cinematic jazz-fusion workouts almost on their own. The set has long been regarded as one of the best musical commentaries on a particularly low period in Detroit's post-industrial history, and many of the tracks are suitably poignant - even those clearly aimed at the dancefloor. Critically, this reissue deals with one of the major issues with original copies - their poor pressing - by stretching the same tracks over two slabs of wax, rather than one.
