Neo-classical colossus Max Richter is the first artist to curate a volume in Rough Trade's new Behind The Counter compilation series, which features tracks picked from releases sold in the label's record stores. As you'd expect, Richter's selection includes many fine cinematic and classical pieces - the beautiful piano work of Alfred Brendel, the spiraling piccolo trumpets of David Munrow, and the spine-tingling choral brilliance of Hueglas Ensemble and Paul van Nevel, for starters - but also plenty of experimental electronica and post-rock oddness, too. Keep an eye out for the analogue synthesizer ambience of Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith, the pastoral beauty of Rachel's "Last Things Last", the spaced-out wooziness of Let's Eat Grandma, the trippy oddness of Aphex Twin, and the moody rumble of Mogwai.
