A proto-James Blake for the heads: Whiskey is the 1996 debut album by Jay-Jay Johanson. An indelible fusion of trad-pop with trip-hop and Ninja era nu-jazz, this is a curiously singular record resembling the illegitimately conceived five-way lovechild of Lewis Baloue, Frank Sinatra, Glen Campbell, Faithless and Tricky. Like most records working in neosonic styles, we welcome this one with open arms for its generative boldness. At once seemingly "lounge" yet also brimming with the gaseously excessive licence endemic to trip-hop as it burgeoned in the US in the late 90s, Johanson wows with his increasingly playful motivic fusions; pop-par vocals, high-hewn drums, "challenging" time signatures. We especially insist you hold out for 'I'm Older Now', a deeply unusual track which contrasts the tiny-violinned tears of heartbreak the with the quavering hats and fill-transitions of rave.
