Queen Of Ice (feat Dizzy - Pet Shop Boys 7" mix) (3:14)
Review: Record Store Day Black Friday edition gifts us this unlikely pairing of artists as Different offers up some Pet Shop Boys remixes of Claptone's 'Queen of Ice.' The extended mix goes first with a nice pop-tinged and subtly Balearic rework with warming electronic drums and the original emotive vocals. Their Moody mix then breaks up the beast a little into tumbling affairs that are perfect for summer festival deployment. On the flip is the heart-wrenching dance pop nugget that is the original of 'Queen Of Ice' (feat Dizzy) before the best of the lot - a nice and breezy 7" mix that is clean and catchy.

Review: Dead or Alive's 1985 classic 'You Spin Me Round' is one of few quintessential charting darkwave cuts from the 80s and this reissue of the single is a celebration of its infectious energy. As many will recall, Pete Burns' flamboyant vocals are set against driving beats and knocky synth riffs, as the song famously compares the effect of a dizzying new liaison to the spin of a 12". The extended mix found here gives listeners even more of what they love about the song, while the EP's timely follow-up songs like 'Even Better Than The Real Thing' provide an enchanting, atmospheric context.

Review: The superb 'Say Yes To Heaven' by sultry singer-songwriter Lana DeL Ray was an outtake from the Ultraviolence sessions which gained viral popularity after leaking online. Because of that, it was eventually released as a single. To mark its official release, it has now been pressed on a limited edition picture disc vinyl, featuring the equally brilliant 'Black Beauty' as the B-side. This limited edition 7" picture disc vinyl is an essential pick up for collectors and fans alike.

Wear Your Love Like Heaven (2:54)
Review: A pair of classic Donovan tracks get pressed up to this new 7" from The state51 Conspiracy. They are taken originally from his seminal double album A Gift From a Flower to a Garden and come in a beautifully printed new sleeve with golden details and limited to just 500 copies. Both are mixed in mono and first is the delicate falsetto of 'The Tinker and the Crab' with is Americana overtones and light flute motifs next to the acoustic guitar strumming and 'Wear Your Love Like Heaven' is another lushly layered folk rock sound.

Review: Early new wave icons Duran Duran have been digging in their vaults again and this time out they've found Dreaming Of Your Cars: 1979 Demos Part 2, which features vocalist Andy Wickett, who fronted the band before Simon Le Bon took over. The rare tracks start with 'Dreaming Of Your Cars', post punk groove with a slick rhythm section and tight bassline driving it along and getting you in the groove. 'Love Story' features superbly nimble playing and crashing drums that again straighten your back and get you marching before 'X Disco' and 'To The Shore' close out in upbeat then more mournful fashion.

Review: It's a match made in Balearic heaven. Ela Minus, Colombia-born, Brooklyn-based artist, best known for building synths, placing agitational statements between her carefully woven ambient melodies and her Acts Of Rebellion album, meets fellow New Yorker DJ Python, he of the hypnotic dembow stylings, for a bumper value-packed six track EP. Ghostly vocals float across stark beats and sometime gloomy, sometime edgy but cheery dayglo musical textures on the three vocal versions, and there are three instrumentals for those who prefer their grooves that way.

After a pre-release campaign that took on Hollywood-esque proportions, French pair Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter return as Daft Punk with their fourth studio album Random Access Memories sporting a A-list cast of guests and contributors. Given the input of disco icons Giorgio Moroder and Nile Rogers it's entirely understandable that the overbearing sound on Random Access Memories is one of classic disco with lead single "Get Lucky" a good indicator for what to expect. There's also a smattering of yacht rock within the thirteen track set, whilst the ubiquitous Panda Bear turns up on the midnight stutter funk album highlight "Doin' It Right". Those expecting a return to Daft Punk's Homework heyday will be disappointed but Bangalter and de Homem-Christo are touching forty so the polished, expertly constructed disco direction makes perfect sense.

Review: Few people are aware that Daft Punk's fame can at least, in part, be chalked up to the wealth of opportunity inherited by one half of the electronic music pair, Thomas Bangalter, by virtue of his dad being the late great Daniel Vangarde. It's no wonder Vangarde came to be known as 'the secret father' of French disco. A titan of the genre's cosmic and funky strands in France, Vangarde's numerous instrumental recordings saw him eventually rub shoulders with many other great contemporaries such as Petula Clark, Sheila and Joe Dassin. Zagora Records was his home turf; a short-lived record label that housed his only ever album in 1975. This compilation by Because Music hears a depths-plunging of the Zagora Records vaults, unearthing a slew of never-heard-before recordings to the public, and shedding light on his various production credits and monikers.

Review: "Every album I make is going to be better than the last from a sonic standpoint because I'm literally learning how to do it ...I've understood a little bit more about myself and how I would naturally perform and make music." You can't fault one-man-wonder Sloan Struble, AKA Dayglow, for confidence and conviction in his work, and career progression. Nor is there any reason to.

People In Motion is polished and exceptionally well produced synth pop stuff made for dancing, oozing the kind of warmth colder months are crying out for and - contrasting these deeply troubling times for the 99% - a sense of hope and positivity. From the stepp-y and funk-driven 'Second Nature', to the rumbling and rolling uptempo guitar-led 'Then It All Goes Away', and glittering 'Talking to the Light', this is nothing if not smile-inducing.

Review: There's a certain drama in the air when the beats kick in with an instant jolt of energy that doesn't let up. The tracks on the second album on Pete Burns-fronted crew are an exuberant mix of bold melodies and infectious rhythms, blending sharp pop with a cheeky edge. You'll know their massive SAW-produced SMASH 'You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)', but the group's unmistakable sense of theatre shines through, with each track feeling like a mini anthem. Whether it's the larger-than-life production or the slightly over-the-top flair, the sound remains unapologetically fun. It's pop at its most playful, wrapped in an unmistakable 80s glow that still carries weight today.

Review: Running Wild - The Inevitable Years offers a captivating glimpse into the formative years of Dead Or Alive, capturing the band's early foray into the post-punk goth scene. Compiled on berry-red vinyl, this release includes two classic and highly collectible Inevitable singles along with related Peel Session recordings, providing listeners with a comprehensive overview of the band's evolution. Frontman Pete Burns, initially discovered while working at Liverpool's Probe Records during the late 1970s punk rock explosion, quickly rose to prominence as Dead Or Alive's charismatic lead singer. Before achieving pop superstardom, Burns and the band delved into darker musical waters, exploring the burgeoning post-punk Goth scene. Running Wild serves as a sequel and companion to the critically and commercially successful 'Let Them Drag My Soul Away', offering fans and collectors alike a long-awaited back story accompaniment. With its vibrant berry-red vinyl and cover photograph by Dead Or Alive's then-manager Francesco Mellina, this release is a must-have for anyone interested in the early days of Dead Or Alive and the broader post-punk music landscape.

The sound of the record is therefore more airy and sunny, expansive and less claustrophobic that previous works. This lighter sound suits her - not that previous album aren't also essential - with an emotional innocence and vulnerability shining through each song. Folky, nuanced and atmospheric, this might be one of Del Ray's best yet.

Review: Lana Del Ray's reputation as one of the best songwriters of her generation is already assured. Rather than rest on this laurels, though, she comes through with another mesmerically original work that takes the form of a collection of verse. Written with all the lyricism and eloquence you would expect of the American, Violet Bent Backwards Over the Grass is an at times vulnerable, at others intense, but always eclectic and honest, window into the artist's endless talents. There is also a hardback book version of these poems but when paired with raw and real acoustic guitar, they cannot bettered.

American singer-songwriter Lana Del Rey does what she wants. Each new album is something of a curveball even for the hardcore fan - and that's the sign of a truly great artist. She's done pop, folk, spoken word poetry and plenty more in her already rich but comparatively short career. This time out on Did You Know That There's A Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd, her ninth full length, the six-time Grammy nominated artist again sets her own narrative. In the past, she has brought melancholy, baroque pop, sad core and more to the fore and always with real songcraft.

Review: There really is a tunnel under Ocean Boulevard. Not accessible to the public, it was allegedly originally built way back in the interwar period to provide easy access between an oil company's HQ and an amusement park. Such a grisly and suggestive origin myth is the epitome of Lana Del Rey's latest chart-topping album, which is named after the very same tunnel. Much like the underhanded links between the entertainment industry and dirty money alluded to in the title, Del Rey has mastered her sound here: an affective rumination on love, loneliness, and of course, loss, appealing to both ironic zoomers and nostalgia-trippers alike.

Review: American singer-songwriter Lana Del Rey does what she wants.

Review: Despite the production being beset with problems - not least the theft of her laptop, which contained all of the demo versions of the songs - Lana Del Rey's ninth studio album has been widely praised by critics, with many claiming that it's her most mature and fully-realised set to date. It's certainly an impressive set of songs, with the American artist's usual cinematic sound being expanded via nods to Americana, gospel, trap and string-laden folk. In her words, it's self-consciously 'spiritual' in tone, with Del Rey's delivery of her lyrics - notably more thoughtful and weightier than some of her previous work - being particularly impressive. This Japanese edition boasts an Obi-strip and slightly tweaked artwork.

Spanning 13 countries across three continents, the tour featured six Australian dates, including shows in Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney and Byron Bay. The latter of which was a truly standout festival performance that was also broadcast live on FM radio. Review: ***B-STOCK: Sleeve damaged but otherwise in excellent condition***

Depeche Mode's latest album Memento Mori is one that has been madly anticipated by fans. The record - which comes on wax and in a lovely embossed sleeve here - centres on the mood of grief after the passing of the band's founding member Andrew "Fletch" Fletcher, this is the first LP by a Depeche Mode made up of only two remaining members: Dave Gahan and Martin Gore. The band's progression in their latest years have heard them move into darker, peakier, sadder and more industrial themes, as they make do with a future-present that wasn't promised to them in the 80s, while drawing on deathly topoi and nodding to Ingmar Bergman.

Review: Hannah Diamond's Perfect Picture marks a significant evolution from her previous work, embracing a warmer and more optimistic sonic palette while retaining her signature hyper-stylized aesthetic. Produced by David Gamson, the album presents a nostalgic yet forward-thinking blend of early-aughts pop sensibilities and glitchy electronic elements. Lyrically, Diamond explores themes of self-acceptance and empowerment, cleverly intertwining meta-humor with genuine emotion. Tracks like 'Flashback,' 'No FX,' and 'Lip Sync' showcase Diamond's ability to craft infectious earworms layered with introspective depth. With nods to Eurodance and Britney Spears, Perfect Picture exudes a playful yet heartfelt sincerity, affirming Diamond's growth as both an artist and an individual.

The band are masters of bewitching instrumentals that combine jazz, funk and soul into carefree and pop tinged grooves a la Fleetwood Mac and Khruangbin. This might be their debut but it shows a musicianship and songwriting skill way beyond that. The production is DIY and lo-fi, the vibes heartfelt and sun kissed and the musicianship is super skilled. A must cop.

Review: Released in 1990, the Canadian 'Titantic' legend's ninth - and first English-language - album, was her formal introduction to a broader international audience. While later albums would showcase her powerhouse balladry, Unison is rooted in late 80s and early 90s pop, dance and soft rock, highlighting a different, more youthful side of Dion. This reissue's title track, 'Unison', is a bright, upbeat number, blending slick production with a catchy, danceable groove. Dion's voice is confident but not overpowering, riding the rhythm with an effortless charm. 'Where Does My Heart Beat Now', arguably the album's peak, is a soaring ballad that previews the emotional intensity she would later become famous for i her vocals swelling with a mix of vulnerability and strength. Tracks like 'If Love Is Out the Question' and 'Have a Heart' lean into soft rock territory, filled with shimmering synths and polished guitar work, highlighting Dion's adaptability across genres. Meanwhile, 'The Last to Know' presents a bittersweet mid-tempo groove, layered with heartfelt emotion. Unison captures an artist in transition i blending dance-pop sheen with emotional depth. It's a polished debut that lays the groundwork for Dion's meteoric rise, offering glimpses of the superstar vocalist she was destined to become.

'Let's Talk About Love' was the album that housed the song: a long and painful journey through heartbreak, love, loss, and everything in between.

Review: 'The show must go on' would be a fitting subtitle for Celine Dion's new Amazon Prime Video documentary. Charting her life, accomplishments, and often hidden difficulties, the overall message is clear: very little is going to stand in the way of someone this determined. Even viewers who don't consider themselves fans have been won over, with 100% of reviews on movie critic aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes offering positive feedback. It's certainly rousing stuff, with Dion's ongoing battle with stuff-person syndrome - a rare neurological disorder characterised by increasing rigidity - a key reason why you're bound to get off the couch feeling like most things might be possible after all, just as the closing credits roll. As for the soundtrack, it's a big, concert-hall worth selection of her most powerful anthems and album tracks, from 'The Power of Love' to 'My Heart Will Go On', many of which take on new resonance after watching the film.

Review: Candy Dulfer cooked up a magical blend of jazz, disco, soul, dance, and r&b from across the ages with this album, which was originally released in 2017. Candy has worked with some of popular music's biggest stars after first shooting to fame more than a quarter of a century ago with Dave Stewart and their #1 worldwide hit 'Lily Was Here'. She has also been named checked by Prince who sang "When I want sax, I call Candy" in the video to 'Partyman.' With Together she offered her own view on the state of all these sounds and more with plenty of catchy vocal hooks, danceable grooves and timeless production that radiates warmth.

Review: Duran Duran's Rio album, had a huge impact on the 80s music scene. The album is praised for its catchy choruses - despite its often nonsensical lyrics - each track is noted for its strong hooks, with even the lesser-known songs having memorable melodies. Recognized for the importance of John Taylor's bass playing that adds a unique groove to the band's sound. Simon Le Bon's vocals are praised for his ability to convey emotion, even with generally meaningless lyrics. The album features the worldwide hits 'Rio', 'Hungry Like A Wolf' and 'Save A Prayer' whose videos were some of the most popular in MTV history. Nick Rhodes' synthesisers as essential to the band's sound, along with Andy Taylor's guitar work, which, while not flashy, contributes to the overall package. 'The Chauffeur' is considered by many as the stand out track, with its spooky vibe and memorable pan flute solo. Overall, the album is described as essential for anyone looking to explore 80s pop music, with its energetic and engaging sound.

Standout tracks like 'Girls on Film' and 'Planet Earth' highlight the band's knack for infectious hooks and stylish production. Review: English new wave legends Duran Duran put out their 11th studio album back in 2004. It was a huge success commercially and reached the heights of number three in the UK Albums Chart, making it their best performing for decade. The record was written in the south of France with Nile Rodgers taking care of some of the preliminary production work. Each tunes glows with bright synth energy and songs like 'Sunrise', 'Still Breathing', 'Virus' and 'Beautiful Colours' were all hugely popular on the tour the band was on at the time.

Review: English new wave legends Duran Duran were already up to album number nine by the time they dropped this one in October 1997. A full quarter of a century later and it gets a deserved 25th anniversary release which, actually, makes the first time it has arrived physically in this country. Back in 97 it was only released in North America, Latin America and Japan. Alt-rock, synth-pop and electronica all feature and the front cover has a painting of the band by artist Andrew Day. At the time the album wasn't received too well critically but that view has changed over the years.

Review: Duran Duran's 15th audio album drew together some of the most accomplished producers of our time. No less than Erol Alkan, Giorgio Moroder and Mark Ronson all worked on the album back in 2021. Now it comes as a "Complete Edition" on double vinyl which includes 'Nothing Less' and 'Hammerhead', missing from the original CD version. Extra tunes 'Velvet Newton', 'Laughing Boy' and 'Invocation' also make the cut, as do two 12x12 art booklets. An essential and complete collector's piece for all Duran Duran fans.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Creasing to corner of outer sleeve but otherwise in excellent condition***

Duran Duran's Notorious, originally released in 1986, marked a significant evolution in the band's sound. Produced by Nile Rodgers, the album introduced a funk rock vibe distinct from their previous work. With the departure of two members, the trio of Simon Le Bon, Nick Rhodes, and John Taylor took the helm, joined by session musicians including drummer Steve Ferrone. Despite lineup changes, 'Notorious' soared to commercial success, peaking at number 16 in the UK and number 12 on the Billboard 200, with platinum certification and over a million copies sold worldwide. The album's singles, including the title track, 'Skin Trade,' and 'Meet El Presidente,' further solidified Duran Duran's global impact. Notorious remains a pivotal moment in the band's discography, displaying their ability to adapt and innovate while maintaining their signature style.

Review: Originally released in 1982, this is an iconic album that remains a defining moment in new wave and synthpop, marking the Brummies' ascendance to the pop tree. A sleek fusion of rock, dance and electronic elements, shining with its infectious hooks, shimmering production and visual sophistication. The title track, 'Rio', bursts with energetic basslines and saxophone flourishes, embodying the band's jet-set glamour. 'Hungry Like the Wolf' is a synth-driven, jungle-infused anthem with a howling chorus that became a staple of MTV's golden era. 'Save a Prayer' softens the mood with lush synth textures and melancholic lyrics, showcasing Simon Le Bon's emotive delivery. 'New Religion' is a more hidden gem with its intricate layering of funk-tinged bass and atmospheric synths, while 'The Chauffeur' closes the album on a haunting note, blending minimalistic electronic beats with surreal poetry. Beyond its commercial success, Rio shaped the future of pop and rock, influencing artists across genres. The album's stylish, forward-thinking production and music videos set new standards for the MTV generation, ensuring Duran Duran's legacy as pioneers of the synthpop movement.

Review: Duran Duran are now well past their 15th album, but Pop Trash was their tenth back in 2000. It was the last record the band wrote with guitarist Warren Cuccurullo, while John Taylor was also not in the band at the time. Following this album, the original line-up reformed and beat working on new music which eventually took the form of their Astronaut album. It was a deal with BMG that led to this one being reissued after many years of it being available on CD-only. Here it comes on two slabs of black wax with hits like 'Someone Else Not Me' still sounding superb.

Review: Duran Duran's third album, Seven and the Ragged Tiger, marked the culmination of the band's early success when it dropped in 1993, an album that saw them defying criticisms that they were a teen-idol band with shallow, sexually sensationalised music. It yielded three singles: 'Union of the Snake', 'New Moon on Monday' and a remix of 'The Reflex' by Nile Rodgers, a UK and US number one, a very rare thing for a UK artist to achieve. Duran Duran supported the album with a worldwide concert tour that yielded several concert films and a live album. Tracks like 'Tiger Tiger', 'I Take the Dice' and the album closer 'The Seventh Stranger' are also highlights. The album was a commercial success at the time - and it has definitely weathered well.

Review: She is a famous voice of pop greatness around the world but there was also real tragedy and trouble throughout the life of Dusty Springfield. Her own personal demons blighted her life but maybe they are what helped infuse her songs with such potent emotion. The heyday years of the 60s and 70s gave rise to some of pop's best ever tunes and they are all captured here on this essential retrospective across two slabs of vinyl. Form the opener 'Son-Of-A Preacher Man' and on through 'In The Land Of Make Believe' and many others, this will swell your heart.
