Tape (12' edit)
Tape (Burnski remix)
Tape (Dirt Crew dub mix)
Review: The 2020 Soundsystem boys return with an even more DJ friendly edit of the funky electronic disco, Greg Wilson inspired track "Tape". "Tape" is taken from 2020 Soundsystem's debut album "No Order", which was released earlier this year to 5 star reviews across the board. The guys worked on their original sound, influenced by the classic 80s electrofunk sets of the brilliant Greg Wilson, to give the track an extra dancefloor injection. Our first remixer Burnski, a fresh, new talent who has already made his mark through releases on Infant Records, Morris Audio and Trapez. He takes things deeper with his trademark clicky style, but still keeping the funk stuck in the grooves. Dirt Crew have been cleaning up with their productions on prestigious labels such as Moodmusic, Gomma, Breastfed, Soma, Crosstown Rebels and now 2020 Vision. Dirt Crew deliver two killer mixes in their trademark solid, hypnotic, electronic house style. The dub keeps things stripped down and heads down, whilst the main mix, which is only available digitally, goes straight for the jugular with a Teutonic rave sound.

Canto Della Liberta (Stefan Goldmann remix)
Review: Coming out with some tight new remixes from Trevor Jackson and Stefan Goldmann, 3rd Face returns with the chanting mayhem that has been embraced by nations apart. Trevor takes this gem and turns it into a gurgling acid reflux by distorting the Italian vocals and ripping the bass with a sonic booming kick. Inject 303ish acid lines and you have it! S.G. takes this one and adds a hyper melodic arpeggio'd synth line and some hard hitting drums with less of the vocal. Making this one easier to digest if you can't handle the vocal.

Review: Re-issue to tie into the release of A Guy Called Gerald's new album release "Proto Acid - The Berlin Sessions" (on Laboratory Instinct Records) Sugoi was the earlier of the two imprints that A Guy Called Gerald set up almost exactly a year ago. This particular label was set up to cater for more leftfield inclinations, with a house tempo and everything from dub to breaks to techno thrown into the mix, with Gerald's usual panache for stylistic innovation.

Without Time
Without Time (Nail remix)
Review: Christian Viers is fast becoming a prominent name on UK underground house and techno circuits, either as part of Lazlo Dancehall alongside Leon Vynehall or his long running A1 Bassline project. Techno-focused releases on his own label, Source Unknown captured the attention of the ears behind the newly formed FINA White resulting in the Bad Timing EP, which the label state is a "strikingly clear indication of the distinctive direction" they plan to take moving forward. Title track "Bad Timing" is a straight up techno banger whose menacingly melodic low-end tones, relentless thump and rolling toms are the driving force behind its robust and looming groove. "Without Time" is a similarly complex percussive cut, but with its jungle inspired Arabic horns, trancey synth-lead breakdowns and acid squelches, whilst UK house veteran Nail offers a more direct 4/4 take on the track with his typically classy remix.

Birdsong
Birdsong (Snoretex remix)
Birdsong (Flowers & Sea Creatures remix)
Review: Ben Watt's Buzzin' Fly is without doubt one of the most successful UK labels when it comes to pleasing both fans and DJs. Their output flies off the shelves and into record bags, garnering respect from the industry while their label nights pull in heavy headliners and big crowds. The deep house label shies away from trends and focuses on elegant, refined and pounding records; their latest, "Birdsong" from Abyss, falls smack bang into that realm. Warm beats and crisp shakers kick off "Birdsong", making it danceable and percussive. But it's the downtempo atmospherics and spaces in between the groove that make it stand out as momentary silences are dropped, beats removed and acoustic piano arrangements and breathy vocal snippets left to shine. Snoretex's remix sees some subtle but intriguing changes to the arrangement, whilst on the flip Flowers And Sea Creatures strip things down to ambience, fusing electronic blips and scratches in the most bewitching manner.

It is a trip on a groove rollercoaster that simply devastates everything on its road. the second track on the a-side is a short trip called "Track 8". Built around a strong bass line and deep kick, this funky dub mix with disco sequences brings the vocal in after a long building break with a second part of the mix which turns have funky anthem feel with percussions and organ line. MD Habitat (Vid Vai remix) (6:36)
Review: While he may have been operating in the underground for some time, Darren Allen's music is only just coming to light through his own Underlying Form label now. There's a range of styles on offer across this EP, kicking off with the subtle pulse of "Feel" before moving on to a distinctly French-flavoured micro house groove on "Inmost Cave" that wouldn't sound out of place on Telegraph Records. On the B side, "Routine Kills Inspiration" switches the mood up with a rougher sound palette, even if the arrangement is still a minimally-minded affair. Then it's left to Vid Vai to drop a complex reworking of "MD Habitat" loaded with intricate textures.

Review: We met Celvin Cross, kind of unusual for music producers, in his summer holiday on the Adriatic coast. Of course, temperatures there are much more comfortable than back home in Lempääla, south of Tampere in the Finnish heartland or in Detroit, his birthplace where he grew up and got his influences. We already know the story of his father, the well-known jazz pianist, who sought his musical well-being in the Mekka-of-Jazz Scandinavia. There are some outstanding talents hidden in his son as well. For example, after becoming a citizen of Finland, Celvin made his way into the national cricket team and came in second place at the world championships last year. Also of world-class level, is his first release on a German record label. It is a special honour fur us to contract a guy for Metromusic who has shared the mixing consoles with the who’s-who of the Scandinavian electronic music scene and who has released his works on handpicked labels around the globe - mainly in the US and France. Now, his newly-founded act Audacity teamed up with the Metro Bothers to create some tracks that will conquer the turntables on this planet in a rush. Next to the unbelievably melodic "Original", the "Next Room Mix" by Steffen Baldo from the shallows of the German Mittelgebirge contributes his unmatched house vibes and brings a broad smile into our faces with his strange filter sweeps. Like a poodle grinding his hips the "Red Pudel Mix" on the second side comes across funky and swinging. Straight to the goal with fat textures and not making any compromises. With his "Dark Dub", Yoshino succeeds to create a real monster. Threateningly it creeps up out of its dark hole, embraces us with his bass-crafted tentacles and takes us to the Detroit suburbia. Release doesn’t come until six minutes later at the earliest.

Paprika
Review: Amsterdam-based new talent Mark August drops his 1st EP (not the last) on the new French's Mezzotinto label! 8 years ago, Mark August discovered quality dance music through some friends of his. This also was the time he had some spare money, and a friend suggested to buy an Atari and a sampler; which, if he didn't like it to much, could easily sell again without loosing to much money. In those years the fun idea became a hobby, and that hobby took over his life. The time is coming to get his music out there. His main influences are from Prince to Richie Hawtin; Steve Reich to Derrick May; Nina Simone to Theo Parrish; Jimi Hendrix to Carl Craig. "Oxytocin" is dark melodic raw track with a big tension build-up. It has a melancholic feel with a jazzy funky bass and the pitched strings and a beautiful high epic melody that comes at the break to finish it off. "Sylvia Saint" is minimalist track with a Detroit flavour, nice 3/4 bleeps and bells that swirl around and a good ol' dirty thumping bass. "Paprika" is a sweet melodic good feel tune that with some interesting little melodies and a nice break and built up gives a sweet release of joy, while the dub-bass with the deep kick just keeps on rolling.

Miles Sagnia - "Journey 2 Forever" (Visual Foci reprise)
Review: Aybee is one of those rare few that has managed to conquer a range of styles within his work from soul, techno, house and hip-hop under his many monikers. This time we see the artist team up with Miles Sagnia for two cuts each on the Eternal Radiance EP on Sagnia's Atmospheric Existence imprint. First, Aybee serves up "A Glance" which oozes with classic US house charm. Acoustic piano chords and are layered on top of a chugging bassline and electronic melody, tightly produced and melting in its warmth. "Isis" gets heavier with a more underground vibe of crashing echoes and tinny drum arrangements. Up next, Sagnia's "Journey 2 Forever" fuses multi-tracked choral chants, the impeccable sound of the Hammond and a rapid techy groove. His Visual Foci Reprise of "Journey 2 Forever" ditches the chants, instead opting for a sensual male vocal.

Remember (Vibes mix)
Remember
Review: After launching into Memory Box with aplomb on the deadly Acid Stomp 12", Robin Ball steps up on the London-based imprint once again with the saucy tones of his latest four track EP. "Drop It Down Low" and its accompanying dub mix are classy twists on the tech house formula that lean towards old-skool methods while keeping the sleaze factor ramped up high. "Remember" takes a more tripped out tribal approach, with the "Vibes mix" providing a more subtle twist to the warm, melodic undulations of the full fat version. It's an EP loaded with personality and flair for sophisticated dancefloors.

Pattern Matchers
Review: Basic Unit are Yair Etziony (Vermont) and Shlomi Avni (DJ Sola), pioneers of the Israeli electronic music scene, and production partners since 2005. Their debut release for Fine Art, "Fedass", takes no prisoners. This is four tracks of jacking minimal techno. Remixes from Gary Beck and Pedro Cali bring out the Detroit elements from the original track and works them into a late night dancefloor frenzy.

Atlas (DJ Koze remix)
Review: 'Atlas' is the first track to precede the most exciting album of 2007. This rhythmic rocker released on Warp, features some freaky vocals, a stomping drum beat and a captivating juggernaut of a groove. 'Atlas' has a killer video featuring Battles performing in a giant mirrored cube, spinning through outer space, showcasing their inimitable style.

Mein Bass, Dein Bass
Review: The sound is a refreshing take on techno, with the tracks leaning heavily towards a modern minimal sound but with still enough in to pack a serious punch on the dancefloor. The first thing that strikes you is the level of production, with the A side being a driving pulsey techno floor burner with acidic riffs and a seriously groovy bassline and percussion pattern. This will surely be hammered by the likes of Richie Hawtin and Marco Carola. The flip side is a deeper minimal take, with outstanding soundscapes and dubbed out basslines for the after hours set. Simply do not ignore this, it really works.
