Review: Annie Clark, stage name St. Vincent, crafts an era and genre-blending melange of sound that is ultra-modern and a lot of fun, with some satisfyingly sleazy swaggering guitar lines often cutting through the layers. But overlaying this, there's no getting away from the fact that she can sing the phone book, blessed with one of 21st Century pop music's most affecting and melodic voices. Such is the power of her songwriting she's amassed fans all over the world and her Spanish speaking fanbase is huge. In what's a truly outstanding gesture of appreciation back to the fans that have come to her from said regions, US citizen Annie Clark has translated her 2024 album, All Born Screaming, into Spanish. Despite it being her second language, she sounds fluent, endearing and magical. And for those of us who don't understand Spanish, it's worth listening without understanding the words because it's phonetically compelling and it brings out aspects of the music you may otherwise miss. Hats off to her - more artists should do this.
