2600 2600 (Shit Robot remix)

2600 2600 (John Selway remix)
Review: When AKA JK (aka New York based producer Jonathan Kreinik) last appeared on Throne Of Blood in 2010, the label was just establishing itself as an emporium of classy club music. Some two years on and Throne of Blood has really expanded operations with a transatlantic roster and a willingness to indulge their artists idiosyncrasies. And AKA JK is amongst their most idiosyncratic, especially on "2600 2600" which masterfully displays his talent for melding elements of refined pop with rough hewn industrial, almost Belgian nu beat rhythms. Sick remix package as per usual with DFA stalwart Shit Robot sitting alongside two Throne of Blood alumni in John Selway and Mugwump - with the latter's perhaps our pick of the bunch.

Movement (Andrew Weatherall remix)
Review: Mop haired Fabric resident and remixer du jour Daniel Avery continues to mature as a producer under his own name, having elected to cast off the shackles of expectation that came with his Stopmakingme alias. Arising on the excellent Throne of Blood imprint with the Movement EP, all advance press has focused on the fact that one of Avery's personal heroes and influences in Andrew Weatherall has been commissioned to remix the title track; this shouldn't however mean you discount the three original productions, which further carve out the supine machine funk groove Avery has been burrowing down in recent times. The deep acid thrombosis of "Light Into Dark" practically growls at you from the lower reaches of the channels whilst the floating analogue sounds of "Flashlights" retain a restrain that lends the track an air of bleep laden mystique. Flip over for the echo laden title track whose gloopy groove is complemented by an array of raw drums and fizzing percussion which is tweaked into a lolloping dub disco number by Weatherall.

Sometimes I'm Happy
Jive At Five
Analogues Anonymous
Holy Stain
Review: Dub techno aficionado Brendon Moeller is rarely resting on his laurels, but it's been a wee while since a Beat Pharmacy release graced our ears. He's back in action with this solid release for Throne Of Blood which sees Moeller indulging his slightly wilder side with some decidedly left leaning material. There's a greater sense of tripped out analogue tweakery at work on tracks like "Sometimes I'm Happy" which nudge and contort with the flow of a live jam, while "Jive At Five" coaxes such tendencies into a more focused and funky situation that calls to mind Mathew Jonson in his bouncier moments. "Analogues Anonymous" is a more typically dubbed out affair, not least in the lead chord, but still the machines rule the day.

In A Trance In France
Hootin & Tootin
Comet
Review: If you'd had US producer Brendon Moeller down as a dub techno artist, then you're in for a surprise! The title track does feature Moeller's robust beats and heavy rhythms, but it's the melancholic synth musings and tearing bass that remove it from the echo chamber cliches. "In A Trance In France" also pushes Moeller into a different direction; there, rolling drums and muffled vocals combine with swirling, ethereal melodies to create a deep techno/house hybrid. Moeller has more surprises: on "Hootin & Tootin", he combines jazzy sax squalls with waves of moody synths, while "Comet" sees him effortlessly fuse clipped beats with sensuous strings. Another quality drop from the under-appreciated Throne Of Blood!

Review: Former Output man Marc Nguyen Tan has been pretty active since returning to production after a 10-year absence back in 2015. Here, his revival continues via a collaborative EP alongside similarly experienced Dane Kasper Bjorke. The headline attraction is undoubtedly "Black Magic", a sleazy and occasionally intense workout that wraps ragged acid lines, mind-altering electronics and hushed, new wave style vocals around a blistering post-punk drum pattern. The post-punk influences come to the fore on the decidedly fuzzy "101" and "Real Slow", which is thrillingly unusual and full of all manner of bizarre electronic flourishes and wayward saxophone solos. A couple of raw, stripped-back demo versions complete an impressive EP.

High Jinks (Gilb'r Hunting remix)
Low Jinks
High Jinks (Photonz remix)
Review: The not so mysterious Bohemian Groove debut fully on Throne Of Blood after hinting at their taste for psychedelic disco with a DJ Druzz vs. Omega Mus remix for the NYC imprint last year. On their original track "High Jinks" and its moodier counterpart "Low Jinks", broad brushstrokes of synth are the order of the day, letting the percussion shake seductively in the background while the melody intones an emotionally rich message of soul-replenishing dance music. Versatile Records main man Gilb'r brings a more dramatic, 70s library music vibe to bear on his "Hunting" remix of "High Jinks", while Portugese duo Photonz' delve into a nagging broken beat techno roller of magnificent proportions.

No Fun
No Fun (Madteo's Cosa C E SoTTo remix)
No Fool
No Fool (John Heckle remix)
Review: Naming the lead track of your EP "No Fun" seems like it's setting the listener up for a disappointment, especially in a dance music landscape where self-congratulating droney minutia and sad sack futurebass have laid claim to their share of the market. Fortunately, Nocturnes boss JR Seaton aka Call Super is likely having a little self reflexive chuckle here, as his No Episode EP on Throne of Blood taps into a consciousness-bending contingent of stomping, urgent techno that can animate bodies in just about every position except a yawning one."No Fun" is the most immediately accessible track on the record, a churning and grinding bassline rippling throughout, the teeth of vintage analogue sounds sharpened into fangs. Meanwhile Madteo continues honing his knack for the dust-coated weirdbeat displayed in the cassette-only Trilogy Tapes released Mad Dip Revue, and his reworking of "No Fun" is infused with the same low-slung, gritty house beat that's constantly fluctuating, on the verge of crumpling in on itself. "No Fool" starts the virtual flip side off on a decidedly darker tip, giving prominence to percussion that sounds like echoing footsteps down a hallway while layers of bubbling, synaptic techno rumblings build up around it. John Heckle then works his magic, running his remix through intermittent echoes, an unpredictably raw stutter effect that withholds and releases itself as the track unfolds.

Carter Bros - "Jamaica Burning" (version 2)
Monty Luke - "Behavior Detection"
Pixelife - "5 Month Survey"
Pixelife - "The Doctor Is Out"
Review: NYC label Throne Of Blood pay tribute to Monty Luke's Black Catalogue by inviting the chieftain himself and label-mates the Carter Bros to curate the A-side of their latest 12", Throne Of Black Catalogue. The Carter's provide a tunnelling, and at times progressive "Jamaica Burning" (version 2)" to the label, while Luke supplies a fuzzy-keyed and snare popping burner with "Behaviour Detection" - which sounds like a well behaved Kyle Hall. Horn Wax's Pixelife then delivers two tracks to the B-side, with "5 Month Survey" fit for any jacking Ibiza dancefloor, while "The Doctor Is Out" stays in the jacking zone too, with its marching snares, there's an added and triumphant italo aspect.

Alien Race (Gingy & Bordello remix)
Review: Although based in New York, Throne Of Blood seem happy to expand operations to include some of the producers making strides this side of the Atlantic, as evidenced by the recent release of Daniel Avery's Movement EP. Avery's close friend Matt Walsh joins him in releasing on Throne Of Blood, with the sometime Turbo artist turning in some fine deep house under the Clouded Vision name he shares with studio cohort Steve Cook. Opening track "City Thunder" finds Clouded Vision in reflective mood, especially when the track opens up into the core section of warm laser like synths and new age cooing from Emilie Albisser of Passarella Death Squad. It's given markedly more rhythmic urgency by Chamboche, whose uptempo refix treats the aforementioned synth elements with cavernous dub and dices them to fit neatly into his own skipping grooves. On the flip, "Alien Race" replaces warmth with darkness as the track's throbbing acidic DNA is slowly extracted over a slowed down jak beat, while Turbo fellas Gingy & Bordello take the track further down the rabbit hole on their new jack techno refix.

Shorty
Shorty (Scott Fraser Above The Clouds remix)
Review: Sean Johnston's Hardway Bros aligns on the Throne Of Blood label with some rare original produce in the shape of A/B Musique, a killer 12" brandishing some assistance from fellow Axis members Scott Fraser and Timothy J Fairplay. Eschewing the Balearic nature of previous Hardway Bros material, the title track is geared as homage to Belgian New Beat and hits the spot as soon as those hollow drums kick into gear. The aforementioned Mr Fairplay provides some punk funk swagger via intermittent guitar riffage and the vibe throughout is geared towards interplanetary love parties. On the flip, "Shorty" feels a bit darker, with tough multi layered drum breaks and fuzzy edged arpeggiated bass lines gradually teasing out a seemingly never ending fluctuating precession of delay laden acid lines and swirling hypnotic vocal smudges. Scott Fraser turns in a murky basement remix of "Shorty" which is tinged with a machine made melancholia that tastes decidedly Detroitian.

Review: Hardway Bros is Sean Johnston - DJ, producer and one half of A Love from Outer Space with Andrew Weatherall. He's fast become a staple of James 'Fucking' Friedman's Throne Of Blood imprint with his modern take on classic house music formulas. If it 'aint broke, dont fix it we say - Johnston's winning formula is on show once again with the heads-down acid wiggle of "Friedman Deeback Loop Revision" followed by the metal dance of "The Laser" closing out the A side in neon-lit, electro fashion. On the flip, Maxime Pasquier (Sheik 'N' Beik/Kill The DJ) delivers a bleepu nu-disco rendition of the A side cut and final offering while "Afro Sirene" goes for a trippy and lo-slung Afro vibe.

Rigor Music (Roman Flugel remix)
Review: New York institution Throne of Blood can serve up a wide variety of club music, and on this occasion they've turned to Eamon Harkin to deliver two distinct old skool flavoured jams. "Electric Light" throbs with thick slabs of electro synths manhandled into an almost Italo-disco context. Brendon Moeller is on hand to serve up a reworking that sees him bowl the fist-pumping original into a glutinous vat of reverb. "Rigor Music" sees Harkin strip things back with a mean acid cut that ticks all the right boxes, leaving it Roman Flugel to finish proceedings off with a brilliant mutant acid offering like only he knows how.

Circle
Review: Having gradually built his profile via a string of must-heavy deep house releases, Luv Jam joins forces with the mighty Throne Of Blood imprint for his most sophisticated and well-produced EP to date. Lead cut "Nesta" sets the tone, coolly shuffling between atmospheric deepness and the sort of cute, melody-driven niceness that sends shivers of excitement down the spine. The In Fields remix of the same track is, if anything, even better (not least for its warm and organic vibe). "Ponciau" sounds like it was recorded in the depths of space, all tumbling alien melodies and woozy synths, while closer "Circle" is rough enough round the edges to excite the analogue house crowd. Very impressive stuff, all told.

Review: The only concrete thing we know about the Man Power outfit is that it releases some pretty heavy s***, the kind of s*** we love to get down to here at the Juno emporium. The Throne Of Blood label returns with yet more of its oddities and downright outsider flavours with "Trans", a gorgeous house tune which uses its synths to propel you off the dancefloor and into deep space; the nugget is rewired by Discodromo into more of a disco piece of the italo variety. On the flip, "Blue Suite" verges on the electro territories thanks to its rolling and twisted low-end, but thankfully we have the wonderfully gifted Willie Burns (LIES, The Trilogy Tapes) to restore the calmness and take you on a different sort of excursion.

The Congregation Of Discalced Clerks
Concrete Skankin
Review: When a DJ of Ivan Smagghe's stature leaves a 150 word reaction waxing lyrical about a record, you know it’s gonna be something a little bit special. Mugwump's The Congregation Of Discalced Clerks is that record and it's a thumping release for NYC imprint Throne Of Blood, rapidly becoming contenders for label of the year. This is the first release from the Belgian duo this year after having hit paydirt of late with key releases, future classics and cool remixes for the likes of Misericord, Disco 45, International Feel and Permanent Vacation. "Concrete Skankin" is a re imagination of the Nitzer Ebb classic "Join In The Chant" that pulses with energy, all throbbing bass and oodles of acid squiggles. Flip over for "The Congregation," a neat mid tempo bumper which is reminiscent of the "Theme For Great Cities" by Simple Minds. This EP is a great taste of what to expect from Mugwump's forthcoming long player on Kompakt.

Review: Despite his many years in the music business, Richard Norris hasn't released many records under his own name, choosing instead to work under a dizzying array of pseudonyms. Here he's just plain old Richard Norris, delivering a chugging, late night techno jam with audible nods to early British rave and foreboding, Meat Beat Manifesto-ish industrial grooves. The latter influence is more obvious on bonus cut "Freaks", though it's the title track that hits home hardest. As ever with Throne of Blood, the remix package is solid, with the Hardway Brothers dropping a spiraling late night interpretation of "Freaks" and Ivan Smagghe turning the same track into a wild psychedelic freak-out (sorry).

Review: Philadelphia collective Pink Skull add Throne Of Blood to their ever blossoming discography with the excellent Braindance EP. It's hard to know what to expect from Pink Skull, with the expansive unit based around core members Justin Geller and Julien Grefe equally adept at creating long form psychedelic experiments (see their Clean Plate LP) as the post punk and Kraut rock referencing mutant disco and electronics of their RVNG INTL output. As the title would suggest, Braindance has Pink Skull looking to the mid 90s micro genre pioneered by Squarepusher and Rephlex for inspiration, manifesting itself most overtly in the amusingly titled standout "John, I'm Only Braindancing". Jokers Of The Scene and Jacques Renault & Das Moth provide the requisite remixes for another Throne Of Blood release of the highest quality.

Review: Saarid is a relatively unknown name with his debut Future Lately on Nervous Records only recently out, and not much other information on him out there (that we can find anyway!). Quick to follow up his first steps however he now releases the Fever Dream EP on New York label Throne Of Blood. Title track "Fever Dream" is dark and moody, dipping in and out of heart wrenching simplicity and chaotic electronica in its peak. Catapulting us back and forth, it's a confusing yet captivating journey that is mirrored on B-Side "Bad At Love". Playing a similar game with its contrasting elements, this time delicate piano keys square up to a head strong arp'd synth, bringing an air of relief to the otherwise spooky darkness.

Review: Well, needless to say, but Throne Of Blood have bloody done it again. After a strong year thanks to a series of superb 12" releases, the US label has come through with a mesmerising compilation of electronic splendour from a mixed bag of some of our most hotly tipped artists. No other way pf describing it apart form telling you our picks, which are plenty due to the quality throughout all of this release. Juju & Jordash's opener "Stroop", a mystical journey into liquid synths and modular percussion; Professor Genius' aka J.Velez's horror soundtrack approach on "Vista"; and Steve Moore's prophetic bundle of slow-cooking oscillations on "Forever.Alone, Immortal". All in all, this is kind of unmissable and it's so good to seeing artists who are typically tied down to dance tracks being able to branch out into their own reveries. Recommended.

Italy's Tempelhof and Gigi Masin come through with the sparse instrumental journey that is "Sessionone", which is a true stand-out piece given their usual disco vibes; Pittsburgh Track Authority roll out the robotic funk on "Beringia"; and Red Axes drops an absolute peach in the form of "Welson Nelson", a chuggy beat track backed by an awesome backdrop of chilling sounds.
