Review: Ital has always confounded expectations, releasing electronic music that flits between styles and defies easy categorization. The American producer's at it again on Endgame, an album supposedly inspired by minimalist composers and his recent experiments with psychedelic drugs. Certainly, Endgame boasts the hypnotic, off-kilter pulse of, say, Steve Reich and Philip Glass, and the dreamy, hard-to-focus musical wizardry most associated with psychedelia. Despite these influences - and occasional nods to both jazz and dub - it's primarily a techno album, with ghostly electronics, skittish rhythms and drowsy chords underpinning crystalline melodies. It's certainly his most considered album to date, and arguably his best.

Review: Following on from his debut artist album Cyclical in 2008, Brighton based producer, Ital Tek brings us his sophomore outing, Midnight Colour on the highly respected Planet Mu imprint. Kicking off with "Neon Arc" - a deliciously fuzzy broody number, with a nod to the Joker-style 'Bristol Sound' in the synths - it's a promising start to what soon unfolds into a magnificent album. Moving through the melodic, reflective Mount Kimbie style "Talis" with its evocatively drawn dripping and chiming, and hollow textured soundscape, to the more abrasive "Moonbow" and "Babylon", it's easy to see why Ital Tek has garnered such a reputation for himself in such a short time. Midnight Colour picks up on the sound that has come to define Ital Tek, taking the whole 'post-dubstep' tip to new lengths, weaving 2-stepping garage rhythms round sonic textures with plenty of moody atmospheric melancholy.

Review: Wow, this is quite some album from Planet Mu! You may not be so familiar with Jlin, a footwork producer with a couple of contributions to the second Bangs & Works compilation Planet Mu released, but the Indiana based artist is quite the talent on the basis of Dark Energy. Jlin has gone on record to say this album has been in gestation from some time and explores darker themes than you would usually get on a footwork album. There's a real confidence to her productions at times on this album, "Black Diamond" in particular has a wonderful swagger to its syncopation, and in "Expand" Jlin offers an intriguing collaboration with RVNG Intl's resident voice manipulator Holly Herndon.

Review: Planet Mu has long been celebrated as a genuine source of musical surprises, but even by their standards John Wizards, the debut album from the South African/Rwandan duo of the same name, is a bolt from the blue. Gloriously, it is near impossible to pigeonhole (or even accurately describe), offering a kaleidoscopic, near tropical fusion of gorgeous African pop, skewed electronica, traditional African songwriting, bright juju guitars, wonky British indie-pop, tactile R&B and loads more besides. That it not only makes sense but sounds great, too, confirms that these guys are a major talent. Recommended.

Review: Kuedo's previous album, 2011's Severant, was marked out by the producer's willingness to combine Vangelis style soundtrack synth-scapes with the body-popping beat patterns of trap and footwork. On Slow Life, he switches focus a little, emphasizing his cinematic influences - Michael Mann and Mica Levi are mentioned in the press blurb - while toning down the beats and bass. The resulting set is seductively atmospheric, with drowsy chords, bewitching electronics and ear-catching melody lines combining to create beautiful and beguiling instrumental soundscapes. There's little in the way of club-focused material, but plenty of period detail and a string of brilliantly mood-altering compositions. It could well be Kuedo's strongest set yet.

Review: Depending on your predilection, the name Venetian Snares will either induce terror or delight. Aaron Funk's music has largely erred towards the aggressive and intense, but those fortunate enough to stumble upon his Last Step project have been privy to a broader tapestry of moods that eschew manic breakcore in favour of low-slung acidic grooves. This latest album, Sleep, is reportedly the result of Funk working on the fringes of his own consciousness at the time when all he really wants to do is have a kip. Stylistically, the Last Step approach is one of vintage brain dance; warm analogue synths give off mournful and intricate melodies, while lashings of expressive acid complement them. The beats are all decidedly vintage too, and largely in a laconic house remit, although to tag this as house music seems a bit of a stretch. Even in the depths of his most malevolent music, it's hard to deny the gift the man has for staggering complexities. Sleep is a shining exponent of that.

Review: Drew Lustman has gone back to basics on this latest full length excursion, dropping his now familiar Falty DL moniker for a set that Planet Mu claims was made "free of conceptual constraints". In some ways, it's a smart move. The Crystal Cowboy is effectively Lustman at his most playful and dancefloor focused, eschewing the impressive, far-reaching complexities of his Falty DL work in favour of straight-up dancefloor jams - and occasionally dreamy IDM workouts - that pay tribute to the halcyon days of British hardcore, early jungle and 'intelligent techno'. This freedom seems to have brought the best out of Lustman, who has shameless delivered the sort of set guaranteed to put smiles on listeners' faces.

Where Did We Go Wrong?
Review: Travis Stewart has been producing under the Machinedrum moniker for more than 10 years; in that time his sound has gone from IDM through hip-hop and ghetto house, but on Room(s) he takes the blueprint of the subgenre of 150BPM Chicago house known as juke (which has been an underground phenomenon for the past 10 years) and runs with it. Despite the album's 150BPM plus pace (which is never anything less than a complete adrenaline rush, even during it's more sedate moments), fatigue never sets in. This is primarily down to Stewart's rhythm programming. While juke would typically utilise untreated drum machines, Stewart isn't afraid to use organic drum samples. "Come1" for example contrasts euphoric piano chords with a freeform jazz rhythm; he gives the track just enough syncopation to give everything enough room to breathe, similarly, on "Lay Me Down" he employs clattering percussion and reverb in a similar fashion to Burial. Stewart also swathes an impressive palette of colour and texture across the album's whole. His grasp of melodic balance is exceptional; any chords he employs in the tracks add just the right amount of emotional pull without negating their ferocity. In short, one of the best albums you'll hear this year.

Review: Follow up to his releases on Warp and Arcola - "Extend" is Milanese's debut album proper. A dark brooding masterpiece of disjointed and distorted beats taking in influences like dancehall, grime, jungle and dubstep all through his own unique filter. The album continues where his warp mini-album "1 Up" left off.

Review: Mike Paradinas has been releasing albums for more than 20 years and throughout those two decades his music has remained relevant and at the forefront of what electronic music can be. This is the first official solo opus of his Mu-Ziq alias and it combines breakbeat drums with drum and bass basslines, rave keys, old school R&S techno, and new age, ambient themes - peppered with the keys of Aphex Twin's "On". For a combination of all that check out "Pulsar", while for something a little heavier there's "Monj2". Beatless sessions include "PRD" and for some futuristic funk nothing beats album opener "XT".

Review: When electronic musicians invent new words, you know you're in for an accompanying sonic treat. u-Ziq aka. Mike Paradinas' latest record Grush aims at something between a crush and a grunt - as if to suggest the violent hydraulic floorings of the former and the cave-manic disinhibition of the latter. Sonically, this follows suit with Paradinas' as-ever ascendant, wompy-breaksy sound, which this time comes peppered with additional flavours of black MIDI and generative sound-spurts honed at live shows; the ultimate aim of the album is to replicate the nonstop feel of a live tour, with each track here having been meticulously road-tested and polished for home listening (or not - get out there and dance to the thing, couch potatoes!)

Review: With a name inspired by a Russian science fiction novel by Andrei Tarkovsky, not to mention a shared love of world cinema, there was never any chance of Solar Bears' sophomore album being anything but a left-of-centre gem. Supermigration melds picturesque electronics and vintage Italo influences to intricate, soundtrack-influenced atmospherics and warm, Morricone-ish melodies. It's a wonderful mix, and one that produces a series of stunning compositions, from the Balearic bagginess of "Love Is All" and soaring intensity of "Our Future Is Underground", to the heart-aching mournfulness of "You & Me (Subterranean Cycles)" and chugging, John Carpenter-on-pills rush of "Komplex".

Review: There are basically two types of anniversary compilations: the humble retrospective, packed with classics and significant musical moments from the past, and collections of all-new music that showcase where an imprint is at right now. Predictably, Planet My founder Mike Paradinas AKA U-Ziq has chosen the latter option to mark the occasion of his legendary experimental label's 30th birthday. There's naturally plenty to get the blood pumping and the synapses snapping across the 25 tracks on show, from the skittish IDM of Jlin ('B12'), mutant future-boogie of Venetian Snares ('Drums') and hard-to-pigeonhole excellence of Falty DL ('Usually I'm Cautious'), to the chopped-and-screwed r&b of Bae Bae ('Living In The Memory'), Nik Colk Void's industrial gunk ('A Tough Design (demo)'), the glassy-eyed D&B/ambient techno of Xylitol ('Nevada') and the sample-rich instrumental hip-hop hedonism of Luke Vibert ('Bullet Drop').

Review: What would we do without represses? Well, for one we wouldn't have the 2006 infamous album form pioneer Venetian Snares. As per usual, this one's got it all: the jungle psychedelia of "Gentlemen" right to the deranged neo-rave breaks of "Kyokushin" and the glithchy drum battles present in the oddy coined "Poo Yourself Jason". What can we say? It's just one of those things that needs to be in your collection - be it on vinyl or CD.

Review: The last 12 months have been a boon for fans of Luke Vibert, with the veteran Cornishman delivering a killer acid album for Hypercolour, and a slick, melodious set of disco-inspired jams under his Kerrier District alias. Here he returns to regular home Planet Mu with another typically entertaining set inspired by classic British electronic music. Utilising his battery of vintage music-making machines, Vibert giddily doffs a cap to early '90s intelligent techno, rave-era hardcore, bleep, Chicago acid and "braindance", occasionally veering off track via easy listening-inspired future jazz, Wagon Christ style hip-hop head-nodders (the title track, which doffs a cap to a forgotten, mid-90s remix he did for Ninja Tune) and squidgy, synth-propelled mutant electrofunk.
