Review: The Cop Killers' only tape is remastered and reissued on vinyl for the first time via Ecstatic. The highly-sought after classic is described as 'an indispensable slice of '80s Europe's underground experimental rhizome', the eponymous offering was originally presented in 1982 on the legendary Trax label and featured the industrial power trio of label co-founder Vittore Baroni, with Daniele Ciullini and Brit Mark A. Phillips (Five Times of Dust). The album is a coarse blend of Italian-accented English vox with backing tracks ranging from jaunty synth figures, to cloven drum machine malfunctions and noisier wig-outs and eventually mixed on a dual cassette deck and mixer from numerous tapes in just over 90 minutes.

Review: If you've ever wondered what the soundtrack to post-Brexit Britain would be, Abul Mogard is here to help. A couple of years ago, he was asked to provide a suitable soundtrack to an experimental film by Duncan Whitley that was filmed on the small island of Portland, off the Dorset coast, in the months following the 2016 referendum. Like the film, Mogard's score - created using modular synthesis, manipulated field recordings and layered organ sounds - is dark, atmospheric and inward-looking, offering a particularly bleak sonic appraisal of the United Kingdom's naval-gazing descent over the last few years. Musically, it's highly impressive and thoroughly absorbing, though we can't see Nigel Farage and Boris Johnson buying copies any time soon.

Techno
  1. Tremendous (5:27)
  2. SM (4:29)
Review: While more readily associated with experimental electronica, ambient and off-kilter industrial sounds, Alessio Natalizia AKA Not Waving does offer up dancefloor-focused records every now and then - as those who bought his "Animals" and "Good Luck" albums on Diagonal will attest. He's in club-focused form here, too, though neither track could be described as bog standard dancefloor fare. "Tremendous" takes synth sounds and acid style motifs reminiscent of the early 1990s and wraps them around a throbbing, muscular and mind-altering rhythm track influenced by EBM. "SIM" is rhythmically more angular and broken, but the synth sounds employed come straight from the late '90s trance playbook. That the resulting track sounds nothing like trance is testament to Natalizia's skills.

Review: As this collection on Ale Natalizia's Ecstatic proves, Gavin Russom's experiments with the far out reaches of electronic music dates back to the mid-'90s. Russom is perhaps best placed to explain the context: "Arriving in New York City I found myself surrounded by an incredibly intense field of stuff to take in; late night radio mixes which featured distinctly New York sounds like freestyle and hip hop, clubs where house, techno and jungle played to drugged-out and/or completely sober sweaty crowds and beard scratchers alike, no wave, new wave, disco, afro-Caribbean, art rock and experimental music records I would pick up at thrift shops or used record stores." This is clearly heard throughout Source Cognitive Eyes, a compilation of sonic sketches recorded between 1996 and 1998 which waves no faithfulness to any one genre of style. Instead, Russom paints a wild and distorted picture, one that has been replicated these days through labels like LIES or The Trilogy Tapes. This is cutting-edge gear for the time it was recorded, and it's no surprise that it is only now that Russom has been brave enough to resurrect the tapes.

Review: Ecstatic's latest offering is little less than stunning. It comes courtesy of Maxwell Sterling, a Morecombe Bay-based cellist and electronic experimentalist whose 2016 debut album, "Hollywood Medieval", still resonates four years on. "Laced With Rumour: Loud Speaker of Truth" started life as a "multi-channel sound installation", which Sterling later re-modelled into the four lengthy meditations presented here. Musically, it's a hazy, otherworldly affair, with Sterling combining elements of spiritual and free jazz with fluid, opaque, dream-like electronics, field recordings and sound design techniques. It makes for hugely enjoyable and mind-altering listening. Recommended.
