Review: Hank Mobley might not be so well known among the greats of saxophonic jazz, but that probably boils down to him making No Room For Squares. Indeed, only the coolest of the menthol-cool were permitted access to this album and Mobley's performances at the time of its release; this was undoubtedly a self-selecting process ensured by the garnering of some of the hottest talents of the day on band duties, including Herbie Hancock on piano, Donald Byrd on trumpet, and Butch Warren on bass. Moving like an effortless meandering current slinking downstream, the six tracks on this vinyl reissue put on effortless instrumental airs.

Review: Tenor saxophonist Hank Mobley's peak in the early 1960s produced a series of hard bop classics including Soul Station, Roll Call, Workout, No Room For Squares, and The Turnaround. Recorded in 1961, Workout showcased Mobley's prowess alongside guitarist Grant Green, pianist Wynton Kelly, bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Philly Joe Jones. Featuring four dynamic Mobley originals and one standard, the album inspired vigorous improvisations. This Blue Note Classic Vinyl Edition, mastered by Kevin Gray from the original tapes, presents a stereo, all-analog experience on 180g vinyl for maximum enjoyment.

Review: Blue Jazz's on going Tone Poet Series - which is about reissuing classic jazz on heavyweight, audiophile quality vinyl - throws out another gem here with the Hank Mobley classic Soul Station. Hank started out as a pianist before moving to the tenor sax aged 16. He put plenty of emotion and intensity into every note he played and during the years 1955-1970 he fronted more than 25 Blue Note albums as well as being a sideman on many others. This record captures him at the peak of his powers with a lyrical playing style and length, passionate solos.

Review: Hank Mobley was a magnificent jazz saxophonist who struck a smooth tone somewhere in between the snarl of John Coltrane and the dulcet purr of Stan Getz. This album was originally recorded in 1957 and released as The Hank Mobley Quintet Featuring Sonny Clark in 1984. It features Kenny Dorham on trumpet, Sonny Clark on piano, Jimmy Rowser on bass and Art Taylor on drums, and it serves as a perfect, mellow trip through the hard bop era. It's also long overdue a repress after last being available in limited quantities back when the 1984 issue first came around.

Review: Recorded in the early hours of Good Friday 1960, Good Friday Blues captures the spontaneous brilliance of The Modest Jazz Trio, led by Jim Hall on guitar, Red Mitchell on piano and Red Kelly on bass. Originally intended to record a single track for a blues anthology, the session evolved into a full album as the trio's effortless chemistry and musical inspiration turned the night into a memorable session. The resulting six tracks include Mitchell's originals and interpretations of standards like 'Willow Weep For Me' and 'I Remember You.' The absence of drums highlights Hall's delicate guitar tones and Mitchell's surprising piano talents, with Kelly's bass providing a solid foundation. One of the more underrated jazz albums for the time, this reissue should help catapult it to the level of attention it deserves.

Review: South African drummer Tumi Mogorosi expands his horizons on the new album 'Group Theory: Black Music', adding a 9-piece choir to his band. The result is an ominous polyrhythmic chanter, following and upending the trailblazing styles of Max Roach, Elvin Jones and Art Blakey. A relatively new drummer with a more vivacious hand than most, he ensures that 'The Fall' is a gothic dirge for kit, organ and voice, while 'Sometimes I Feel Like A Motherless Child' slows things down to a shadowed, veiled slow jam - with Gabi Motuba featuring on a belting vocal feature on the B-side's alternate version.

Accompanied by liner notes from German DJ and tastemaker Rainer Truby, this reissue aims to make the album accessible to a new generation of listeners as original copies of this influential record are rare, with only one 1992 repress that now fetches somewhere between L30 and L60. Highly sought after by collectors and DJs for obvious reasons once you hear it, it is packed with quality jazz fusion sounds that are as innovative and fresh now as they were back when it first landed.

Monk's Dream (8:11)
Review: It's exceedingly rare to stumble across any unreleased recordings by jazz greats such as Thelonious Monk, let alone find them in the trash. Yet, somewhat remarkably, that's the story behind "Monk", a 1963 recording of the pianist in full flow - accompanied by his "all-star" line-up of Charlie Rouse (saxophone), John Ore (double bass) and Frankie Dunlop (drums) - that mysteriously resurfaced in a Scandinavian skip last year. This album presents a fully remastered version of that rare recording - captured on tape at a live show in Copenhagen - for the very first time. It's a wonderful listen, with Monk and company darting between original compositions and altered jazz standards in typical be-bop style.

Review: Reissued on vinyl, Thelonious Monk's Monk's Music has the maestro at his peak in 1957, backed by an all-star lineup including John Coltrane, Coleman Hawkins and Art Blakey. This session epitomizes Monk's genius, with compositions like 'In Walked Bud,' 'Blue Monk,' and 'Round Midnight' asserting themselves as timeless jazz standards. Despite Monk's modest soloing, his leadership allows Coltrane and Hawkins to shine, backed by Gigi Gryce's alto sax, Ray Copeland's trumpet and Wilbur Ware's bass. Art Blakey's percussion adds dynamic rhythm throughout. The album, a meeting of jazz generations, marks Monk's breakthrough, earning him rightful acclaim alongside Miles Davis and Charlie Parker. The session's historical significance is enhanced by its dual release context with 'Thelonious Monk with John Coltrane,' capturing the breadth of Monk's artistry from the same 1957 sessions. For jazz aficionados and newcomers alike, this reissue not only delights with its musical brilliance but also serves as a gateway to exploring Monk's pivotal role in jazz history and the innovative spirit that defines his legacy.

Review: Pique is the remarkable debut solo album from Dora Morelenbaum, a key figure in Brazil's burgeoning music scene and a member of the talented band Bala Desejo. Following her initial EP Vento de Beirada, Pique marks Dora's ascent as a significant solo artist, blending boldness with grace, bridging Brazil's musical heritage with contemporary grooves, incorporating funk, MPB, disco, soul, r&b and jazz, all infused with an indie pop sensibility thanks to co-producer Ana Frango Eletrico. Opening with the sun-kissed 'Nao Vou Te Esquecer,' Pique transitions into the infectious funk of 'Venha Comigo' and 'Sim, Nao.' Tracks like 'A Melhor Saida' and 'Petricor' offer a more relaxed, introspective vibe, while 'VW Blue' showcases virtuosic jazz-funk, and the title track delivers radiant MPB. The drumming is crisp and swung, the horns and strings are meticulously arranged, and the basslines groove with a funky energy, complemented by strutting guitars and vibrant production flourishes. Dora's hands-on approach to the albumifrom songwriting to arranging and producingiensures a cohesive vision. Supported by a talented ensemble, including her Bala Desejo bandmates and her renowned parents, Paula and Jaques Morelenbaum, Pique merges tradition with modernity. An endlessly listenable album, poised to become a future Brazilian classic, blending the spirit of legends like Gal Costa with a fresh, innovative edge.

Review: When popular 1950s singer Jaye P Morgan first released this eponymous album in 1976, she would undoubtedly have hoped it would reignite her career. Sadly it didn't, but the album - a curious but hugely enjoyable mix of saccharine, synth-laden slow jams, disco-fired dancefloor workouts, Broadway style torch songs and fuzzy funk - went on to become a cult classic amongst Balearic-minded diggers. As this essential reissue proves, much of the material has aged rather well. Check, for example, the laidback AOR disco chug of "Can't Hide Love", the Barry White style seductiveness of "Here Is Where Your Love Belong" and the spine-tingling rush of Morgan's killer disco cover of Detroit soul staple "You're All I Need To Get By". Don't sleep!

Next to the trumpeter himself, the quintet here features Hank Mobley on tenor sax, plus Cedar Walton on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums. They are all in fine fettle and the record has a number of standout tunes such as the Duke Pearson gem 'Is That So' and the lush title track by Morgan. This is another essential reissue from the on going Blue Note Tone Poet Series which paces high focus on the wealthy of each recording.

The Sidewinder
Totem Pole
Gary's Notebook
Boy, What A Night
Hocus Pocus
Review: Lee Morgan's The Sidewinder, a cornerstone of Blue Note's catalog, is a vital release that revolutionised the jazz landscape. This album, renowned for its title track, launched the boogaloo trend with its infectious groove, making it a staple for both jazz aficionados and casual listeners. The real gem, however, is Totem Pole, a classic Latin swinger featuring Morgan's feisty trumpet, Joe Henderson's tenor sax harmonies, and Barry Harris's lyrical piano solo, reminiscent of McCoy Tyner. This track exemplifies the album's depth beyond its famous single. Recorded at Van Gelder Studio in 1963, the ensemble includes Bob Cranshaw on bass and Billy Higgins on drums, both delivering impeccable rhythmic support. The catchy piano riff and punishing beat of The Sidewinder secured its commercial success, helping Blue Note thrive and continue producing boundary-pushing jazz. Morgan's effortless precision, superb interplay with Henderson, Cranshaw's irresistible basslines, and Higgins's powerful backbeat create an irresistible momentum. Tracks like 'Gary's Notebook' and 'Boy, What a Night!' feature challenging lines and masterful solos, showcasing the musicians' prowess. The Sidewinder is not just a pivotal jazz record; it's a testament to Morgan's ability to inject excitement into his playing. The album's initial pressing, known for its Van Gelder stamp and Plastylite pressing, remains highly sought after by collectors. This release's impact on jazz and its enduring appeal underscore its importance in the genre's history.

Review: Lee Morgan's Taru, recorded in 1968 but released in 1980, showcases the trumpeter at a pivotal point, exploring a variety of styles with a stellar band. This album is a gem, featuring George Benson's inspired solos on three tracks and Bennie Maupin's debut collaboration with Morgan, setting the stage for future classics like Caramba! and Live at the Lighthouse. The rhythm section, consisting of John Hicks on piano, Reggie Workman on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums, delivers a masterclass in hard bop. The album kicks off with 'Avotcja One,' a modal jazz piece that sets a dynamic tone. 'Get Yourself Together' charges forward with hard bop energy, while 'Haeschen' and 'Taru, What's Wrong With You?' showcase Morgan's ability to craft beautiful ballads. The gospel-tinged 'Dee Lawd' and the funky boogaloo 'Durem' add stylistic variety, making the six-song set a rich display of jazz. This Blue Note Tone Poet Series reissue is a true audiophile delight. Produced by Joe Harley and mastered by Kevin Gray from the original analog tapes, the 180g vinyl pressing at RTI ensures pristine sound quality. The deluxe gatefold tip-on jacket adds a touch of elegance.

Review: Following the runaway success of 1964's The Sidewinder, Alfred Lion continued to record Lee Morgan in pursuit of another boogaloo hit. While subsequent albums like 1965's The Rumproller, The Gigolo, and Cornbread didn't match the same commercial heights, they showcased Morgan's musical prowess. Recorded over two summer dates, The Gigolo features Morgan leading a quintet with Wayne Shorter, Harold Mabern, Bob Cranshaw, and Billy Higgins. This set of swaggering hard bop includes Morgan's originals like the groovy Yes I Can, No You Can't, up-tempo gems such as 'Speedball,' and the stirring 11-minute title track. The album closes with a lush arrangement of 'You Go To My Head,' adding a sensual sway to the collection. This Blue Note Classic Vinyl Edition presents the album in stereo, all-analogue, mastered by Kevin Gray from the original tapes, and pressed on 180g vinyl at Optimal, preserving Morgan's dynamic performances and the quintet's vibrant interplay for contemporary listeners and ardent vinyl enthusiasts.

Released first in 1966, the record showcases Morgan's virtuosity as a trumpeter and composer. With a lineup featuring heavyweights like Wayne Shorter and Herbie Hancock, each track is a journey through intricate melodies and dynamic rhythms. Review: Over the course of his long and successful career, Ennio Morricone composed many dance songs in step with the fashions of the late 60s and early 70s. These were themes not necessarily directly connected with his films' synopses, but which were nonetheless played in disco clubs, on jukeboxes, turntables and on the radio. This collection contains a selection of pieces such as the brilliant main theme from Grand Slam (1967); the shake rock (opening credits) from Dario Argento's classic Four Flies On Grey Velvet (1971) the danceable from the noir film Violent City (1970); the beat version of the opening credits of 'Pioggia Sul Tuo Viso' by the Sorrows, from How I Learned to Love Women (1966); 'Per Vittorio (Bossa)', an elegant bossa nova with flute and percussions from The Success (1963); the tribal shake from I Cantori Moderni, which winks at the dies irae from Garden of Delights (1967); 'Scuola di Ballo al sole', a wild surf piece from the Hawks and the Sparrows (1966); the supreme bossa nova from One Night at Dinner (1969) with the super iconic voice of Edda Dell'orso; the shake music of "'Ostinazione al Limone from What Have you Done to Solange? (1972); and 'Donnabossa' from Full Hearts and Empty Pockets (1964), a delicate bossa nova piece with a prominent harpsichord.

Review: Acid Jazz's announcement of the 30th anniversary 2LP remastered edition of Mother Earth's The People Tree is a momentous occasion for fans of acid jazz and soul music alike. Originally released in 1994, this album holds a significant place in the genre's history, blending elements of soul, funk, and folk-tinged rock from the 70s with a modern twist. The special edition reissue boasts the original album, along with three previously unreleased tracks and six making their vinyl debut. Remastered from the original analogue recordings, this release promises to breathe new life into the beloved classic. Featuring guest appearances from iconic artists like Paul Weller, Dee C Lee and Simon Bartholomew of Brand New Heavies, The People Tree is a testament to the collaborative spirit of the acid jazz scene. Notable bonus tracks include the previously unreleased alternative version of 'Apple Green,' an alternate take on 'Illusions,' and the title track itself. First-time vinyl cuts offer fresh perspectives on tracks like 'Jesse' and 'Slide Sweet Baby,' adding depth to the listening experience. The album's presentation is equally impressive, with a beautiful 'wide-spine' layout, printed inner sleeves, and insightful notes from label-founder Eddie Piller, accompanied by unseen photos from the original cover shoot. Overall, this anniversary edition of The People Tree is a album worth your time as it often selected for one of the best examples in the genre.

Review: Ryuhyo (Sailing Ice) has long been regarded as a rare and quintessential mid 70s hard bop album. This live album shows the ensemble Motohiko Hino Quartet delving into fusion jazz, rock, be-hop and some free-jazz styles. The album is creatively recorded as well with an interesting stereo balance of the sounds and instruments. Over time , this album has continued to gain steam in jazz-fusion circles as a very strong and unique live album from Japanese artists. This reissue comes on 180-gram vinyl.

Review: Initially discovered by the label via cassette tapes picked up in Jo'burg's Kohinoor store back in 1995, The Movers feature on the 35th in Germany's Analog Africa's series of band spotlights. As its title suggests, this captures the band's work across the lion's share of the 70s, and tracks like 'Hot Coffee' and '2nd Avenue' are irresistibly, instantly groovy, but also a fascinating sonic crossroads where African jit music meets the funk and soul of the US and the funkier end of the guitar music coming out of the UK and Europe at the same time. All executed In the most natural, free flowing, as well, which makes this package even harder to resist.

Review: A Leeds jazz five-piece with a film musical feel, Mu Quintet share their latest LP, which develops their modal and melodic jazz kerns and serifs, spelling out the Biblical name “Enos" in eight-track album form. Following up their Jazzaggression debut, Summit, from 2023 - which aimed at a freer set of celeritous jazz beatitudes - Enos is more measured and expressionistic by comparison. Doomy, stringy downturns pockmark the record’s otherwise merrier movements, a precedent set on the opening ‘Enos’, which couldn’t possibly predict the strutting, and perhaps relatively traditional modal swing that follows on ‘Drunk In The Morning’. We reach a funereal nadir on ‘Collapse’, while a well-mourned *bon viveur* is circumscribed on ‘Rich Man Blues’, the fullest and most enjoyable track on the LP. Very little studio trickery, synth histrionics or extra FX are required of Mu to lend their music a cosmic, larger-than-its-parts feel; the progressions alone handle the task well.

Review: Idris's fifth and perhaps most popular of his near-20 LP strong solo discography (that's not including the epic array of artists he's worked with from Fats Domino to Art Davis) Ranging from the heavily-sampled stone-cold soul stunner "Could Heaven Ever Be Like This" to silky disco funk such as the album title track and the sleazier "Crab Apple" to the frenetic jazz blasts of tracks such as "Camby Bolongo", this is the sound of a man fully committed to the craft and spirit of the groove. Nothing short of essential.

Review: Renowned DJ and selector MURO is a Jedi-level compiler and this new collection of his delves into Victor's extensive archives to spotlight a world of Japanese jazz, fusion and AOR. It take sin plenty of internationally known names like Yasuko Agawa on the sunset sounds of 'L.A. Night', Sadistics who offers the more psyched out guitar leans of 'On the Seashore', Yuji Ohno's neo-Balaeric bliss-out 'The Dawn of Seychells' and Hiroshi Fukumura's soul soothing Ry Ayres-style melodies on 'White Clouds.' These are luxurious sounds and timeless tracks with MURO's signature funky perspective making this a brillaint choice for brighter, warmer days.

Here he collates together some of his favourite songs from Tribe, a rather legendary spiritual jazz collective from the Motor City. This music has been revered for more than 50 years and now for the first time gets put together on one album that is both a perfect primer for newbies and a great collection for those long-time fans.

Review: London DJ Paul Murphy has been entertaining jazz dancers since the late 1970s and is rightly cited by Gilles Peterson (amongst others) as a major influence. Here he offers up a taste of the up-tempo dancefloor jazz he's been championing for the last four decades via a fine compilation named after his once regular club night, Jazz Room. There's plenty of Latin jazz and fusion present (see Art Pepper's "Mambo de la Pinta", Lucas Van Merwijk's "4Beat Cha Cha Cha" and Terje Terasmaa's "Yatra-Ta") as well as African-influenced workouts (see the cuts by Rhythmagic Orchestra and Mamelon), the odd classic (Art Ensemble of Chicago) and a handful of more recent cuts, including an inspired jazz cover of Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" by Blue Mode.

Review: Jasmine Myra's sophomore album Rising is apparently named after her current status in the UK jazz game. She deserves the recognition: the saxophonist, composer and bandleader lays down a beautiful six-piece project here, providing a brilliant dialgue to contrast her first LP Horizons. Myra describes Rising as a "reflection of a period of my life", following on as the logical continuation from Horizons, which was "all about my experience during lockdown, and entailed overcoming my struggles with mental health". Rising, the sonic reply, charts Myra's experience of continuing to bulld her self-confidence. Through its glistening, refractive, yet soft progressions, demarked by detailed bell acoutrements and mutedly ascendant sax progressions from the star herself, the likes of 'Rising', 'Glimmers' and 'From Embers' make for fantastic spirited listens.

Review:  Waaju & Majid Bekkas's Alouane exemplifies the power of collaboration during challenging times. As bringing overseas artists to the UK grows increasingly difficult, this record bridges cultural and generational gaps while capturing the vibrant energy of live collaboration post-Covid-19. Conceived by Waaju bandleader Ben Brown, the album features his expansive arrangements of traditional Gnawa songs and blends Bekkas' musical prowess with Waaju's signature grooves and trippy delays. Bekkas, a key figure in Moroccan Gnawa music, had never collaborated with a UK band until this project. Alouane, meaning "colours" in Arabic, reflects the seven integral colours of Gnawa music, each invoking different spirits.

Review: Jazz Is Dead is a series that welcomes contemporary musicians to revisit jazz storied of old. This collection challenges Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad to utilise vintage equipment to create new master soundscapes, and they really come correct. Roy Ayers, Gary Bartz, Marcos Valle, Azymuth, Doug Carn, Joao Donato, & Brian Jackson are some of the legends who feature and the album is a free flowing delight that touches on soaring and soulful highs as well as bossa-tinged shufflers and plenty in between.
