Review: Following on from their widely acclaimed album Afraid To Leave, Berlin's beautiful maudlin post-punk outfit Bleib Modern presents a compilation of remixes and reworks by esteemed artists from across darkwave, post-punk, and EBM. From IV Horsemen's club-worthy rendition of 'Bitter Smile' to M!R!M's dreamy synthpop take on 'Into The Night' via Dune Messiah's crooning 'Loony Voices, 2 Afraid 2 Leave: Remixed Reimaged Reloaded Part 2 offers truly diverse interpretations. Review: Those who have encountered Lucy Dacus before should know what to expect with this long-awaited EP. A collection of tracks, some familiar, others less so, each with the rapidly rising songstress' brooding, emotionally charged approach to music confidently stamped on every note. There are few better examples than "In The Air Tonight", a stark but powerful take on Phil Collins' haunting ode to the frustrations of divorce. When tackling any cover the pressure to do justice while doing something individual is immense. This is compounded when the song is widely regarded as a classic. Here she more than steps up to the mantel, creating something very much in her own vision- chilling and beautiful. These skills are clearly on display again for "Christmas" and "Fools Gold", two more reworked favourites that she takes on with ease, marking Dacus out as a tour de force, despite the relative infancy of her career.

Review: Bristol-based band DAMEFRISOR is composed of vocalist Kazhi Jahfar, guitarists Garin Curtis and Jamie Brown, plus synths and keys from Sam Nobbs and Megan Jenkins on bass. They formed back in 2019 and craft wide open soundscapes imbued with industrial post-rock and electronic twists. Nyle Dowd's drums power each tune and there is always drama to be found in the pulsating beats. Passionate and empowered vocals touch on notions of loneliness and "the reality of feeling invisible in the modern world" while always offering moments of real dancefloor clout.

Review: 'Neat Neat Neat' might have only been the second single released by The Damned, but its timeless longevity as an essential punk staple has seen it appear in episodes of The Simpsons and The Boys while Edgar Wright would give the track yet another lease on life by using it to score the intense opening chase sequence in 2017's Baby Driver. That's before even mentioning the vastly differing artists it has influenced with everyone from My Chemical Romance to Elvis Costello taking a stab. Pressed to artwork complimenting purple wax, this 7" offers a slice of cuts captured during a set in Mulhouse, France in 1994, with the classic single on the A-side, while the flip boasts a dynamic yet bizarre bevvy of covers, from the likes of iconic pop duo The Righteous Brothers ('You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin') to 60's mods The Craig ('I Must Be Mad') to Johnny Cash's 'I Walk The Line'.

This vibrantly coloured 7" captures a handful of cuts from a 1994 live performance in Mulhouse, France, boasting the aforementioned single on the A-side with a curious selection of covers on the flip, ranging from Johnny Cash's 'I Walk The Line' to 'You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin' from The Righteous Brothers and even a rendition of 60s mod originals The Craig's 'I Must Be Mad' lobbed in for good measure.

Review: Bay Area power pop outfit Dancer have a new single and, like the other ones, it's a swaggering, boys' night out affair. Together, songwriter Dee Dee Robbins and his gang have cultivated a sound that's both tough and tenderiequal parts Johnny Thunders and Milk N' Cookies. Like most good bands in the genre, Dancer are shambolic performers, but play with enough pluck to command your attention. The group's specialty - tart, but tasteful harmonies - make their hook-filled melodies all the more delectable. "Bitchin' Heat" is the most immediate of the bunch, but "Heart Failure" is the one you'll revisit indefinitely.

Review: It's been a few years since the rebrand of Super Furry Animals was announced. Doyens of the 1990s indie rock circus renowned for their consistently alternative and innovative contributions to a scene that was at constant risk of running out of ideas, while die hard fans and anyone who was actually there at the time will expound for days on the timeless merits of fare like Fuzzy Logic, Radiator and Guerrilla, a few decades on re-emerging as Das Koolies and rebooting does make perfect sense. First unveiled in 2019, the project is now Huw 'Bunf' Bunford, Cian Ciaran, Dafydd Ieuan and Guto Pryce's baby, Gruff Rhys still left to his own groundbreaking devices. While that may imply a weakening of the team sheet, Das Koolies proves how much talent ran through the SFA lineup. This EP is a case in point, blending synth wave, post punk, and dark pop in the title track alone, it's a veritable box of delights to unpack.

Review: DBridge continues his consistently innovative vision with a whole stack of newness. We launch into his cosmos with the truly unique "Too Late", a deliciously slo-mo soul record that almost sounds like it's made to appear like it's on half speed. Pensive, gradual and measured with strings, lilting pianos and his own falsetto, it's total future soul complete with two equally forward-thinking remixes from staple label peers Stray and Spacek. Deeper again we hit "Gone Before Dawn" which steps, cautiously, with much more of a barbed tech aesthetic. We hit "Better Than The Pain", a languid sci-fi Heart Drive special and close with the woozy feels of "Coz My Love Is" a record that sounds like jazz, recorded underwater, somewhere near Detroit with Amp Fiddler. Beautiful.

Review: After leaving his native California for Chicago, Rudy De Anda dimmed down his beachy, psych-rock roots and dipped into some unknown waters, yielding enchanting results. His latest album, which was recorded in Austin, Texas, is romantically familiar and novelly soulful Latin pop that's a pure joy to behold. The b-side here - '83' - is a key number from that album. It has a subtle, cool groove perfect for sparking up a fat cigar and putting your feet up for the day. Given that De Anda is on such top form in this chapter of his life, it's no surprise he's done justice and then some to with his cover of Royal Jester's version of 'Take Me For A Little While'. The two tracks fit seamlessly together and beg repeat listens.

This one comes from the super cool LA duo De Lux (who have a new album out this month) as remixed by Dan Tyler and Conrad McDonnell aka Idjut Boys. They bring plenty of their signature and spacious cosmic dub sounds to 'What Life', layering in the echo and spring reverb in fine style. If this is your first encounter with De Nooit Moede, then welcome to the wake of the best group you sadly only cottoned onto when they were posting about their final release on Instagram. The Brussels seven piece's swan song certainly fits the bill for funeral soundtrack, with RIP's garage-punk-wave washing through your mind with equal parts melancholy and swagger. Four tracks run from the staccato-step of 'Doopsel', which opens the scoring and sets the mood perfectly, through the more melodic 'Sluiswachter', blissfully downtrodden 'Fake Niet', and motoring 'Alledaagse Nachten'. Each is as infectiously groovy as the next, and cooler than pretty much everything else you will have been listening to this week/month/year. More Flemish attitude, please.

The original, 'Line The Cows' is a nice sleazy cut with lashing of dub, electro and post punk energy making for a macho groove. Last of all is Make A dance dub, which pings about the steroids field with kinetic energy to spare.

The EP's six tracks, including singles like 'The Moth' and 'Selene', reveal a newfound maturity in both production and songwriting. According to singer/guitarist John McCauley, the band was pleased with the material that didn't make it onto the album, leading to this compilation. The band, including guitarist Ian O'Neil, drummer Dennis Ryan, and bassist Christopher Ryan, recorded these tracks with producer Dave Fridmann, aiming to capture the raw energy of their creative process. The EP includes the new single 'Sacrosanct,' a track the band has reworked multiple times. McCauley notes that Fridmann's production provided the necessary spark to bring the song to life and Contractual Obligations continues the band's tradition of heartfelt, dynamic rock-and-roll.

Review: Depeche Mode's 'Wagging Tongue' was first released in 2023 as the star number from the indelible synthpop band's comeback album and swansong, Memento Mori. Something of downtempo musical elegy, the original track is a crisp exercise in melancholy uplift, colliding the band's usual synthetic arpeggiations with grass-is-greener lyrical themes. Now, however, comes a new ten-track remix bundle, of which select remixes have been chosen for a set of limited releases on wax. Most of the artists enlisted for the job have done a stellar job, amping up the tempo to a neatly electrified 130-ish-bpm, while indulging the zeitgeist's penchant for well-rounded but beefy sonics. On this one, none other than Daniel Avery sticks out with a futureological cosmic electro take, while Hawtin Gaiser opts for knocking big-room techno, and Henning Baer cools things down with a cityscape-soaring 808 remix.

Any record that features Blawan and Matthew Dear on remix duties is big news and both artists excel here; the former indulging his thick set claustrophobic wall rattling tendencies on a Dub version that submerges Dave Gahan's sad refrain deep in the murk. It should come as little surprise, then, that the CD version of "Where's The Revolution", the first single to be taken from forthcoming full-length Spirit, boasts a superb remix package. The original version - a typically dark fusion of synth-pop and rock produced by Simian Mobile Disco's James Ford - is given a going over by French tecnno/electro sort Terrence Fixmer, Ewan Pearson (with a few additional touches here and there from pal and longtime collaborator Sasse), industrial/noise artist Algiers (AKA Ben Greenberg) and fast rising shoegaze duo Autolux, whose rework pits Martin Gore's vocals against their own distinctive backing track.

Liverpool-based melodic techno maestro Massano (real name Sam Rose) steps up first, delivering a raw, heavy and mind-mangling take that sits somewhere between darkened new wave, moody techno, and early noughties electroclash sounds. It's a fine remix all told that showcases the best of the Basildon band's original synths and vocals, while dragging the track kicking and screaming towards the dancefloor. The original comes from German duo and new wave innovators Die Radierer whose pop-reggae jam 'Batman' is irresistibly catchy with its low-slung beats and lazy, sun-kissed melodies. In fact, far from it - the band are among the chosen few alternative rock outfits to have managed to maintain their creative prowess and sense of adventure over the course of four decades. Nevertheless, this live outing represents them during peak years, established enough to have proven why they should command reverence, but still boasting the kind of freshness that represented youth culture at the time.

Recorded at the height of the grunge movement, something Jr were tied to but predated and never really bowed to in terms of demands for non-conformist conformity, this is loud, heavy, raucous rock 'n' roll music for Generation X, but which transcends eras and ages to speak to disaffected and affected in one fell swoop. Mr Zak (demo) (4:12)
Review: Continuing the label's special 7"s releases that capture the nascent 80s post punk, dub, funk and pop - as examined on releases by The Jellies, Woo, Phantom Band, 4AM and more - here a discovery of unheard demos from Dislocation Dance's Midnight Shift album.
As part of the eighties Manchester scene, the band's pop and jazz sensibilities have continued to garner attention, offering a rightful place in the city's rich music history.
With the closure of Richard Boon's New Hormones label in 1982, they came to the attention of Geoff Travis' Rough Trade. Creating a home studio in the basement of an old rambling farmhouse in Withington, Ian Runacres (guitar, vocals), with lyricist Paul Emmerson (bass), set to work creating demos to garner a deal.
Inspired by the funk-disco of Dr Buzzards Original Savannah Band debut album, Here Comes Love was written using Roland TR-606 drum machine, guitars, bass and (cheap) keyboard, its magical and lo-fi charmed quality melts hearts.
On Mr Zak, the fun Runacres had is evident. Written as an "indie" song, but with Aztec Camera and Burt Bacharrach on his mind, with Andy Diagram (trumpet) and Kathryn Way (vocals), hides a structure matching the album version, but which in its rudimentary instrumentation and production is unique and outshines the later version, to encase a specific period and innocence, of time.

Review: Make A Dance brings their official remix of Django Django's 'Don't Touch That Dial' to vinyl and in the process create a dancefloor bomb. Already a club-ready original, the remix transforms the original into an electrifying body-shaking anthem with Yuuko's vocals taking centre stage but nicely complemented by glitchy synths and acid elements. This version is a full-throttle, infectious banger and on the B-side you will find a vinyl-only dub mix that amplifies the electro grooves allowing Yuuko's vocals to subtly loop in the background. This is one of those records that Das of all genres will be reaching for to get things going to the next level.

Review: Django Django & Yuuko Sings's 'Don't Touch That Dial' first appeared on the Off Planet Part 2 album back in March. It's one of the standout cuts though so deserves this standalone pressing on white label 12". The Make A Dance remix kicks off with boom-bap drums and lithe electronic synth lines darting about the mix. It's a real body popper to enliven any floor. On the flip is Make A Dance vinyl Only dub which will twist your melon with its fleshy low ends and cavernous bass. Two big cuts for sure.

Review: Nottingham, UK, has given us plenty worth talking about over the years - from Robin Hood, saviour of the poor and scourge of the rich, to Sleaford Mods, Casio-powered post punk confrontationists who defied all the rules of mainstream music to become household names by way of lo-fi tales from lower income Britain. Now we can introduce their counterpoint, Do Nothing, who hail from the very same city but are far more positive in mindset. The instrumentation matches for vibe, with plenty of reverb on the lows and high-paced vocal delivery married to searching guitar chords. The result creates a propellant, grab-you-and-drag-you feel to the whole affair. Or at least this is true of tracks like cowbell-heavy 'LeBron James' and opener 'Comedy Gold'. In contrast, 'New Life' has more of a soft inviting groove powering its engine room, betraying how much depth these guys have in their repertoire. A cracking debut EP.

Review: The debut album from Amsterdam-based muso Donald 'Donny' Madjid (a member of The Mauskovic Dance Band) came after an unusual break in his often hectic touring cycle, largely thanks to the pandemic. Keeping himself sane with a plethora of vintage synths as well as a 60s era drum-machine, the resulting experiments gave way to 2021's retro-fitted disco meets new wave opus Pure Donzin. Now that tour-life has resumed and his schedule chock-a-block yet again, it's taken three years for another dose of pure Donny with the release of his follow up Zonder Pardon EP. Authentic swathes of machine-percussion, thick synth-lines and Madjid's own disarming croon (sung almost exclusively in his native tongue) channel the sonic iconography of Talking Heads or Roxy Music, yet transported by way of an Italo-Disco rave to the funkiest spots of inner-city Holland.

Review: Also known as Angus Stone, also known as Lady of the Sunshine, Dope Lemon's second set of studio recordings under the moniker were unveiled in 2017 and rightly blew then minds of those who managed to track the release down back then. That lack of mainstream exposure indicative of true greatness, as is often the case in the 21st Century.

Laidback stoner beach rock with hints of psychedelia definitely audible, five tracks comprise this EP, which is remarkably easy to fall in love with. Like a summer holiday romance that captures heart and mind and has you head over heels before you realise, leaving you staring at the cliff edge of a return flight home alone once the inevitable conclusion arrives, this is infinitely listenable and achingly cool stuff we implore you to sample, and guarantee you'll savour.

Drab Majesty's latest EP 'An Object In Motion' is a deep mix of blackgaze and goth psychedelia, consisting of just four tracks flirting with a mystical, guitar-driven spirit. Don't let the number of tracks deceive; the project clocks in at just under half an hour, in large part thanks to the long-form number 'Yield To Force', which pits strange distant alarm sounds against graveyard-shifting fingerstyle guitars, in what amounts to a night-drive around old town suited well to any atmospheric surrealist crime flick. Only your first and last tracks use vocals, and when they do, the combination of deeply high-and-low-end registers are great complements for the artists' lyrical musings on misery and wonderment.

Review: Contemporary LA cold-punks Drab Majesty bring together coldwave and and shoegaze for their latest EP, An Object In Motion. The four tracks therein are examples of those styles' most atmospheric and ethereal facets, showing off the distinctive vocals and guitarwork of the project's mastermind, Deb DeMure, the androgynous alter ego of one Andrew Clinco. A swirling, emotive fusion, something between Slowdive (enlisting the help of Rachel Goswell one track) and Romo, emerges.

Review: Drab Majesty was first set up by Andrew Clinco in the beating heart of the US music industry, Los Angeles. It's here, in a metropolis defined by both glitz, glamour and plastic, and wild experimentation and unconventional thinking, that the artist once best known as drummer in Marriages adopted a new androgynous persona, Deb Demure, and then drafted Mona D (Alex Nocolaou) as keyboardist and vocalist. That was 2016. Now here we are today, a few albums deep and faced with their latest offering. An Object in Motion takes bold strides in many directions, from the beautiful, natural ambient of 'Cape Perpetua' to goth-shoegaze worthy of Gary Numan himself, 'Vanity', the EP moves away from typical readings of genres like dark wave and takes us on a journey to a place defined by synthesised ethereality.

Review: Described by their label, Dais, as "a stirring new chapter" in their musical story, 'An object of Motion' has its roots in a coastal break main man Deb Demure made back in 2021. It was material recorded there, largely using a vintage, bowl-shaped 12-string guitar, that formed the basis of the four-track mini-album. These recordings were then expanded on with help from collaborators Rachel Goswell (Slowdive), Justin Meldal-Johnsen and Ben Greenberg. It's a decidedly psychedelic set all told, with Demure and company blurring the boundaries between neo-folk, psychedelia, the Cure, shoegaze and the sort of saucer-eyed, turn-of-the-90s bagginess associated with the Stone Roses. Most impressive of all, though, is 'Yield To Force', an undeniably cosmic, layered and effects-laden instrumental that ebbs and flows over 15 magical minutes.

Review: Gerd Jansen's Running Back is brilliantly and effortlessly eclectic. It's a label that does easy to love house anthems as well as more experimental fair and plenty in between. And that's where Ede & Deckert sit - in a world to the left of centre with catchy synth tunes feat. Sargland. 'Immer' is their latest and pairs doleful guitar riffs a la Joy Division with soul vocals and slick drums that will work in the right dance floor setting. It's a great sound and one that has the potential to become something of an unlikely underground dance hit. The B-side has an instrumental that allows the synth work to shine more.

Review: If indie-rock did fantasy football then this is a championship-winning supergroup that hipsters would have wet dreams about. Minnesota slowcore sorts Low joined forces with Aussie meditative atypical post-rock group Dirty Three for a one-off EP. That's Dirty Three of Warren Ellis fame (the beardy Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds band member). There were tight parameters to encourage experimentation: The EP, originally released in 2001, was part of the Fishtank sessions where artists handpicked by the Konkurrent label make a record in Amsterdam in only two days.
The gamble seemingly paid off. It's remarkable that they sound as if they've been living out of each other's pockets for years, with seamless musical understanding, despite the short amount of time they were given. There's tear-jerking tenderness in hearing Mimi Parker's voice on the opening track, 'I Hear Goodnight'. Parker founded Low along with her husband Alan Spearhawk, but sadly passed away in 2022. Meanwhile, other highlights include a superb slow-motion cover of Neil Young's 'Down By The River', which doesn't feel too constrained by the original and showcases the group's experimental tendencies. The vocal take here makes you wish for an entire album of them performing Neil Young covers. Elsewhere, 'When I Called Upon Your Seed' is an Americana masterpiece with gorgeous droning instrumentals freckled with guitar plucking and long-held vocal notes.
Something that appears to have made this session a success is the uncomplicatedness of the recording, which stays away from adding too many lines of instrumentation, and gives the spotlight to the individual talent of people who can truly play. The rewards are countless, but it would be amiss to not note Warren Ellis' violin performance throughout the record. That alone is enough to make you wish you persevered and kept up with those violin lessons as a kid. Enough listens to this, though, and perhaps you'll think it's not too late to go back. Truly inspiring stuff.

Best known for his work in Can, there are also many more sides to this singular sticksman, and Emotional Rescue has chosen to shine a light on his post-Can period living in Stollwerck. On the A side of this 7" curio is the sound of Phantom Band with Linear Johnson & The Protons. "Rush Rush" has a spiky new wave bent to it, but still Liebezeit's drumming stands out. The B side "Drums Off Chaos" need little explanation - it's the sound of one of the all-time drumming greats letting rip in a ferocious blast of percussive abandon.

Review: Chrystabell and David Lynch's album Cellophane Memories emerges from a visionary encounter Lynch had, translating light and voice into a collection of ethereal tracks. This collaboration dives into fairytale forests, mountain peaks, and crepuscular highways, creating an atmospheric journey through landscapes of loneliness and romance. The album is a sonorous exploration of these sublime settings, enveloping listeners in a supernatural experience of colors, weather, and breath. The songs present a fluidity of time, where characters are sketched in the ephemeral moments of daily dramas. Chrystabell's vocals emerge, dissolve, and loop, creating layers of harmony and history, evoking both the presence and absence within each note. Lynch's orchestral arrangements, along with late composer Angelo Badalamenti's contributions, weave together strings, guitar glissandi, and reverb, crafting melodies that suspend time and capture the essence of a first kiss. Cellophane Memories invites listeners to ponder the nature of mystery, without providing definitive answers. The album's music embodies the transient beauty of departures and returns, landscapes and atmospheres and the intricate dance of time and memory. It radiates a distant light from within its darkness, offering a profound listening experience. This vinyl release is a great package to experience the enduring and enigmatic creative partnership between Chrystabell and David Lynch.

Review: David Lynch and Chrystabell's collaboration on the album Cellophane Memories unfolds as a haunting journey into Lynch's surreal musical realm. Directed by Lynch himself, the music video for 'Sublime Eternal Love' sets the stage with Chrystabell's layered vocals, weaving a tapestry of ambient passion. The album, slated for release from Sacred Bones Records, continues to intrigue with its latest single 'The Answers to the Questions,' blending muffled beats and deep guitar tones under Lynch's lyricism of dramatic romance. Lynch's experimental approach to production, described as "passionately ambient" by critics, layers Chrystabell's vocals in an eccentric yet captivating manner. The duo's creative process, marked by spontaneous lyricism and Chrystabell's engineering finesse, yielded ten tracks ranging from the reverb-laden 'Two Lovers Kiss' to the introspective 'Reflections in a Blade.' Their collaboration spans decades, rooted in a shared vision that embraces musical accidents and experimentation to conjure a unique sonic beauty. As the release date approaches, Lynch contemplates additional visual accompaniments, underscoring his deep connection between music and imagery. For fans of Lynch's cinematic ethos and Chrystabell's ethereal vocals, Cellophane Memories promises a profound exploration of love, dreams, and the enigmatic allure of their creative partnership.

Review: Karl D'Silva's debut album, Love Is A Flame In The Dark, is an evocative exploration of sound that challenges conventional boundaries. Over two years of recording, D'Silva has created a compelling landscape where industrial grit meets tender melodies. Self-recorded in Rotherham and meticulously mixed in Leeds by Ross Halden, this album stands as a testament to D'Silva's ability to craft a distinctive pop language rooted in a post-industrial ethos. The album resonates with a sense of urgency and raw emotional depth. Drawing from influences as varied as Cabaret Voltaire and Nine Inch Nails, D'Silva's music is a fusion of inventive sound design and earnestness. Tracks like 'Wild Kiss' showcase thunderous percussion intertwined with D'Silva's commanding voice, while 'Flowers Start To Cry' marries aggressive drum programming with a haunting falsetto, evoking comparisons to Nine Inch Nails' visceral production style but with a unique, personal twist. Throughout Love Is A Flame In The Dark, D'Silva's versatility is evident. 'On The Outside' offers a soundscape of synths and saxophone, echoing the adventurous spirit of late 60s Free Jazz. 'Entropy' stands out with its expansive synth pop, while 'Nowhere Left To Run' weaves a narrative of light emerging from darkness with its midi-string orchestration. D'Silva's voice, a soulful rasp from his early medical history, imbues the music with a fearless yet tender quality. This album captures a journey from darkness into light, reflecting D'Silva's profound connection to his craft and the emotional weight of his experiences.
