Review: Fresh from turning Lappsley's previously unknown "Operator" into the disco anthem of summer 2016, DJ Koze attempts to breathe new life into Michael Mayer and Joe Goddard's recent single, "For You". On the A-side you'll find his Club Mix, which peppers an off-kilter, live sounding tech-house groove with foreboding noises and chopped up electronic stabs before triumphantly introducing Goddard's vocal and Mayer's sinewy string arrangements. On the flip you'll find vocal and instrumental versions of the more fragile, intricate and folksy Mbira remix. Both make much greater use of music box melodies, meandering clarinet lines, and some chiming additional percussion. As a result, they have more emotional impact than the more functional club interpretation.

Review: Back in 2011, K7 offered up an EP of exclusive tracks made by Motor City Drum Ensemble man Danilo Plessow for his contribution to the DJ Kicks mix series. With original copies of that 12" single becoming increasingly hard to find, the German label has decided to reissue it. "L.O.V.E" is one of Plessow's most mature and evocative tracks to date - a woozy and organic vocal deep house number rich in drowsy chords, twinkling electric piano motifs, languid bass and crunchy, MPC house style drums. "Basement LOVE", a stripped-back and locked-in revision built around hooky organ stabs and a heady vocal from Dwayne King, is arguably even better.

Review: Such was the excellence of MCDE's entrance into the DJ-Kicks hall of fame that K7! have taken the unusual step of commissioning remixes of "Love", Plessow's trademark original production for the mix. Leading the way is the still far too talented for someone so young Kyle Hall, whose remix sprawls across the A Side in typically claustrophobic fashion, building an intoxicating late night groove around analogue bass pulses, relentless percussion and all manner of strange synth noises. Wolfgang Voigt reaches for the (synth) strings on his pleasingly groovy rework, whilst Smallpeople do their best Lone impression with the assistance of some big piano riffs and jackin' beats.

Review: To complement the release of Will Saul's entrance into the long running DJ Kicks series, K7! Cull four highlights for 12" sampler duty. There's predictably plenty to enjoy, from the starburst, two-step informed rush of Bicep's "Nova" - think early '90s meets late '90s - and soulful groove of Jabru's heady "Church", to the footwork tempo deep house positivity of Marquis Hawkes' excellent "Life Struggle". It's actually Leon Vynehall who steals the show, though, delivering a fluttering, dreamy slice of deep house bliss in the shape of the gorgeous "Time". If this is anything to go by, the mix should be a doozy.

Review: The long-running DJ Kicks series has prospered largely because of the opportunity it gives to well known DJs and producers to showcase the breadth and diversity of their record collections. That's certainly the case with this latest volume from global house superstar Maceo Plex, who impressively opens proceedings with a string of stargazing Detroit electro cuts (see the contribution from DJ Stingray) and atmospheric IDM jams, before peppering the mix with such inspired choices as Charles Webster's sublime, long-forgotten version of Kumbu Kimbra's "Raise The Dead" and Vivandi's decidedly stone cold classic "Racing Tracks". Of course, there's plenty of typically touchy-feely Plexian fodder, but it's far from the mix you'd expect.

Review: On his third studio full-length "&" Kompakt co-founder Michael Mayer has embraced the concept of collaboration. Each of the album's 12 tracks was co-produced with one of Mayer's many friends from within the electronic music community, including some notable names. It's a formula that guarantees both variety and freshness, as the swathe of highlights proves. Check, for example, the glistening melodies and hazy house throb of Gui Boratto and Voigt & Voight hook-up "State Of The Nation", the stylish electroclash-goes-synth pop hustle of Miss Kittin collaboration "Voyage Interieur", and the rubbery, hypnotic "Blackbird Has Spoken" (made alongside Agoria). Throw in fine contributions from Joe Goddard and Prins Thomas, amongst others, and you have an entertaining concoction.

Review: Given his length of service, it's rather surprising that Michael Mayer hasn't previously been asked to deliver a DJ Kicks mix. His contribution to the long running series is predictably impressive, moving from the warm and woozy downtempo vibes of Peter Zumo, to the loose-but-driving bliss of Modarat's remix of John Hopkins's "Abandon Windon". Along the way, Mayer doffs a cap to some of his early inspirations (Chris and Cosey, Throbbing Gristle), highlights the work of some of his favourite contemporary producers (I:Cube, Justus Kohncke, Alter Ego, Prins Thomas) and showcases a string of his greatest remixes. The vibe is woozy, melancholic and occasionally dark, with Mayer successfully blurring the boundaries between techno, new wave, krautrock, synth-pop and off-kilter ambient.

It is, somewhat remarkably, the legendary Detroiter's first commercially available mix set. This triple-vinyl edition features a whopping 19 cuts - all in unmixed form - from the 30 track mix. Musically, it's a blazed, jazzy, soulful and groovy as you'd expect, and contains a mixture of downtempo beats, nu-jazz and hazy house cuts from the likes of Flying Lotus, Dopehead, Peter Digital Orchestra, Nightmares On Wax, Soulful Session and Lady Alma.

Review: Like the best instalments in the long-running DJ Kicks series, this mix from Motor City Drum Ensemble man Danilo Plessow gives a far better insight into his musical inspirations than his own productions ever could. While there are, naturally, great deep house moments included (Tevo Howard, Mr Fingers, Latecomer etc), these largely take a back seat to Plessow's other musical passions. So, we get soft-focus electric jazz (Sun Ra), dub wise explorations (Tony Allen, Basic Channel), sweet soul (Peven Everett), dusty afro-funk (Geraldo Pino), urgent leftfield disco (Loose Joints, Walter Gibbons) and even a dash of instrumental jazz-funk (James Mason). That it all makes sense musically, flows brilliantly and is effortlessly entertaining is testament to Plessow's skill as a DJ.
