Review: The first missive from the reissue-focused Throwdown imprint takes a deep dive into the bulging back catalogue of West Coast hip-hop legend Ice Cube. Side A offers us another chance to own 1992 hit "It Was A Good Day" a languid, sun-kissed Golden Era jam crafted from elements of a familiar slab of laidback jazz-funk. Over on side B you'll find 1999's "You Can Do It", another once high-profile single featuring additional verses and vocal contributions from Mack 10 and Ms Toi. For those who've forgotten it, the track is a punchier and heavy club cut that utilizes all three rappers' distinctive flows to ratchet up the intensity throughout.

Review: Throwdown Records throw down a fresh reissue of Ice Cube's stone cold classic 'You Know How We Do It', first released as a single from his fourth studio album Lethal Injection (1996). Emblematic of Cube's signature West Coast G-funk, this one's replete with the glissando'd whistles and smokey funk motifs we all know and love from the frozen rap hexahedron, who confidently assures us of us already knowing how he does it. There's no messing with Cube; the track appears alongside the original B flip '2 N The Morning', which ups the bombast to boomier, increasingly sexual nighttime ends.

Review: The Funky Dividends label is all about preserving and celebrating a range of classic tunes from cornerstone genres like hip hop, funk and r&b. Its latest careful vinyl outing is this limited 7" with two hip hop cut from Infinite. These came first time around in the mid-nineties when Infinite was knocking it out of the park with his storytelling rhymes. He was an underground star who grew up in a low income area in Toronto and used that to power his potent bars. He released only a couple of tunes but these two are his most notable.

Review: The Frosted label is back with more brilliance from Inland Knights in the form of this newly remastered version of the classic 'Figure It Out.' It was first put out back in 2013 as the first release on the label and remains a vital tune from the British pair. On the flip, Mark Farina is one of those hallowed producers who always has his own unique sonic signature, most famously under his Mushroom Jazz alias. His edit brings plenty of depth and broken beat lushness with noodling guitar riffs and spoken words making it a backroom gem.

Review: Prolific producer Inkswel becomes Inxxxwel for this new outing on 7" via the always excellent GAMM label. It's a two-tracker that is packed with hip hop, funk, soul and opens with 'Chill' - a Space Funk rework alongside Leonard Charles - which echoes the work of the great J Dilla as well as having some lush 90s r&b overtones. On the B-side, things get pitched down into New Jersey house territory with more sultry r&b tones on the excellent 'Hanna-Mi-Dia' (Inkswel Jazz Cigarette Mash Up) which features vocals from Blu & Ta'Raach. Two red hot jams, for sure.

Review: Pete Cunningham's hybrid electronic/acoustic jazz collective Ishmael Ensemble has been right at the forefront of innovation when it comes to those sounds. For his latest project he links up with lyricist and MC Rider Shafique. They first met some six years ago when Cunningham was struck by "his powerful way with words." As such they got in the studio, Cunningham embraced a more bass heavy sound to his style and drew on his love of the likes of dub kings King Tubby and Adrian Sherwood. Now he branches out to Norway's Mutual Intentions with a crisp new EP, Mid Season, on 10". It showcases the dexterity of his voice which goes from offering up classic bloom bap era par's to more stylised Prince-esque deliveries on 'Mid' and downbeat, almost mumble rap styles on 'Names.' It's an album that takes in everything from the hardcore rap opener with plenty of heavily treated vocals and dark beats to the low slung and sleazy Cali-style funk of 'Da Freeza' and 'Bring Dat Shit.'

Review: Those who know are saying that Ice Spice is set to have a big year in 2023. The rapper is doing her own bit to make that come true with this, a first official release via 10K Projects/Capitol Records, which includes a single made with assistance from 'Gangsta Boo.' The Bronx rapper has generated lots of buzz up to now and this six tracker only builds on that with great production from RIOTUSA. It includes breakout single 'Munch (Feelings U)' and her newest hit 'In Ha Mood.' Add in catchy cuts like 'Actin' A Smoochie' and you have a real winner.

Review: O.G. Original Gangster was the fourth album from American legend Ice-T, along with beat making help from the likes of Africa Islam, Beatmaster V and DJ Aladdin. It reached the Top 10 of Billboard's album chart at the time and went on to be certified gold, hence this reissue is a welcome one that re-highlight's Ice's skills on the mic. Many argue it features his best work, with musings on decaying America and humours digs at Public Enemy and angst up deliveries on "Lifestyles Of The Rich And Infamous." The production hits hard, emphasising each message with visceral thrills. This is a classic for a reason.

As you can imagine, therefore, it takes in peaks and troughs, emotional highs, depressive lows, and plenty in between that will all feel all too familiar to anyone who has ever fallen in and out of love. Drill-laced beats are laced with intimate melodies, and excitable chords spiral out of control while a menacing ambience percolates up from below. It's a powerful listen with a relatable narrative.
