Egyptian Reggae
Egyptian Reggae (clear splattered vinyl 7")
Cat: 62118. Rel: 29 Jan 25
Pancho Acosta - "Egyptian Reggae" (3:58)
Money Chicha - "Carnaval De Jujuy" (3:07)
Review: A new take on a Jonathan Richman classic from 1977 which has lit up clubs for 45-odd years, especially during the punk era. The track's infectious rhythm has inspired various reggae remixes but now it's getting a fresh cumbia twist. Cumbia and reggae share a common groove, making them a perfect match for DJs to mix and this one was recorded in Lima by Pancho Acosta, founder and guitarist of Company Quinto, who transforms the track into an upbeat cumbia gem. The flip side features Acosta's 'Carnaval de Jujuy' blended with Money Chicha's modern take on Peru's fuzzed-out chicha sound.

Funkin' For Jamaica

Akiko & Masayasu Tzboquchi - "Love Theme From Sparticus" (feat Mbanja Ritchy aka B-Bandj - Clear Day mix) (4:34)
Review: Tom Browne's 1980 single 'Funkin' For Jamaica' has long been something of an anthem - a hybrid funk/boogie classic that remains a staple in sets of hip-hop, disco and soul DJs alike. Given its ubiquity, covering the song is fraught with danger, but remarkably Japanese producer Akiko and guest vocalist Mbanja Richy have successfully put a new spin on it. Their take is subtly tougher and more synth-heavy, with bilingual French/English vocals, nods to Zouk music and a bassline so squelchy it could have been lifted from a P-funk record. Over on the flip, the pair go mellow, deep and laidback on a pleasingly skewed hip-hop soul cover of Terry Callier's legendary vocal interpretation of Alex North's 'Love Theme' from 'Spartacus'. Inspired stuff all told.

Alemayehu Eshete - "Tchero Adari Negn" (4:27)
Mahmoud Ahmed - "Bemin Sebeb Litlash" (4:26)
Review: The UK's Mr Bongo has been reissuing old music and putting out new tunes since the late 1980's, and the label is still going strong in 2015. This latest 7" features two of Ethiopia's greatest musicians, Alemayehu Eshete and Mahmoud Ahmed, in a head to head, split EP. On the A-side, Mr Bongo has resurfaced Eshete's "Tchero Adari Negn", a supremely funky piece with the man's own voice gliding effortlessly over hard drums and fuzy guitar riffs; "Bemim Sebeb Litlash" goes deeper and more psychedelic on the flip, and Ahmed's voice is a pleasure as always. Check their other material on Mississippi for a broader introspective.

Banda Black Rio - "Miss Cheryl" (3:47)
Miele - "Melo Do Tagarela (Rapper's Delight)" (instrumental) (4:10)
Review: Although Brazil's Banda Black Rio remain infamous for the albums that they recorded in the late 1970s, two beautiful LPs that rode that singular wave of samba-ridden jazz dance, 1980's "Miss Cheryl" is an outstanding tune, and we can hear why RCA picked it up back in the day. Mr Bongo provides us with the reissue here and, if you haven't heard it, it's an absolute delight which switches between disco, psych, and something inherently Brazilian - there's even a wacky synth in there, for good measure. Compatriot Miele appears on the flip with "Melo Do Tagarela (Rappers Delight)", a sublime slice of early, electronic boogie that sounds as fresh today as it did back at the tail end of the 70s. A devious little reissue that you should own...

Can You Win
Cat: TOWN 153. Rel: 04 Jul 14
Charlene & The Soul Serenaders - "Can You Win"
Margie Joseph - "One More Chance"
Review: Kent Soul pay homage to two diva-level chanteuses who deserve a little more space in the soul footnotes than they currently have. Originally released on Paradox, Charlene Southern's "Can You Win" was part of a collection that was marketed to Stax. You can instantly here why; a thumping upbeat groove, slim-line instrumentation (just straight-up guitar and bass) and real belly-driven vocals, it's raw and emphatic and honest in its dynamic. Perhaps best known for her covers, Margie Joseph was a lot more prolific than Charlene and this full-bodied, big band jam was one of her earliest releases. Complementing the stripped back A-side with broad horns and lavish pianos, Margie fronts with real confidence and timeless soul-stirring vocal prowess. Two sides of the soul coin, there's something for everyone here.

COOL Band - "Jam 1" (3:34)
Manzanem - "Don't Interupt" (3:59)
Review: While a lot of PPU's time is spent unearthing, reviving and liberating classic boogie, disco, funk and soul from the 80s and 90s, it's also home to troves of authentic grooves tailored in contemporary times... And long-standing label fam Benedek is one of the most consistent forces behind it all. The excellently titled C.O.O.L Band and Manzanem are two of his latest guises; the former is a real Sunday afternoon lazy vibe, like an electro boogie record on at half speed with thundering weight on the powerful kicks while the latter takes us deeper into the late 80s with a Mr Fingers' style trip into primordial house music. Pure synth odysseys, the pair of them.

Lifestyle (Serious mix) (3:31)
Review: Following their first boom-bap flavoured collaboration with Crimson Alchemist, last year's 'Storytelling', Diess Productions regulars Mister Modo and Ugly Mac Beer once again join forces with the underground MC for a similarly retro-futurist hip-hop throwdown. Crimson Alchemist's Q-Tip-esque rap sounds superb on both versions, both of which boast fat, toe-tapping beats and tons of nods towards Mister Modo and Ugly Mac Beer's turntablist roots. The A-side 'Donut Mix' is the slightly bouncier of the two takes, with tidy organ motifs and sweeping synth-strings, while the flipside 'Serious Mix' revolves around some killer horn samples and a descending bassline.

Review: Be Strong Be Free's 7" series is on fire this year and now comes back with a third instalment. It is 'Nuit De Fievre' and it comes from label owner Gratts, aka the "Belgian down under," who revisits disco's golden era by assembling a stellar studio team starring the Moody Mae band in the company of Reinhard Vanbergen on violin and Jaj from Paris on vocals. What they cook up in return is elegant boogie and disco that will chime well with fans of Dimitri From Paris. The B-side features Pellegrino's jazz-funk rendition, adding Mediterranean flair straight from Vesuvius. Both sides promise deliciously uplifting grooves for any disco enthusiast.

Review: Hillside & Matulah is a Helsinki based instrumental duo composed of Risto Kumpulainen (keys) and Janne Mathlin (drums & percussion) who mix various genres with their own unique style. Here they present their block rockin' jam titled 'Fo Yo Mind' featuring the lyrics of rapper Tykopaatti, who is part of the Finnish hip-hop collective Joku Roti Mafia. Over on the flip, they go for a completely different tempo on the psych-rock/acid jazz crossover of 'Knock Out'. Review: The superbly classy Daptone label comes on strong with another perfect formed 7" of retro soul. This time, the label's in house crew Menahan Street Band provide their famously authentic grooves, with big horns, rolling licks and drawn out leads on 'How Did I Get Here?' which on the a-side has vocals from LaRose Jackson. Soaring high and filled with rich soul, it's another timeless tune. On the flip is the instrumental. It's a story telling tune with some cosmic synth work and nice old school tambourines for an old/new fusion that gets you movin'.

Sakla Beni (Karaoke) (4:40)
Review: Earlier in the year, Kutiman took his brand of psychedelic fusion to Wah Wah 45s for the very first time. Here he returns home to Siyal Music with Turkish vocalist Melike Sahin in tow. "Sakla Beni" is wonderfully odd and exotic - a spaced-out psych-funk affair that wraps mazy, Moog style motifs, mind-altering orchestration and Sahin's wide-eyed vocal around a skewed, low-slung groove. It's brilliantly hallucinatory, as is the accompanying "Karaoke Version" - a superb instrumental take that allows listeners a chance to revel in the intricacy of Kutiman's arrangements. In this context, "Sakla Beni" sounds like it should be gracing the soundtrack of a particularly odd late 1960s Turkish film

Stayin' Alive (4:13)
Review: You've probably never thought that you need Cumbia cover versions of classic disco numbers in your life, but as this excellent seven-inch single from Vampi Soul proves, you really do. La Cumba Moderna De Soledad handles side A, delivering an inspired re-imagining of Rod Stewart number 'Do Ya Think I'm Sexy' which brilliantly wraps a Spanish translation of the track's familiar lyrics and snake charmer melodies around a typically chunky, club-ready cumbia groove. Arguably even better is Machuca Cumbia's flipside interpretation of Bee-Gees classic 'Staying Alive'. While it's instantly recognisable thanks to the guitar riffs and replayed melodies, their cumbia version is thrillingly psychedelic and undeniably tropical.

Review: There’s a ton of James Brown material which never saw the light of day and no doubt since his untimely death on Xmas day 2006 various labels around the world have been digging deep in the vaults to showcase alternative versions to offer aural delight to his fans. These unreleased versions on the Noise Revolution label are alternative takes of JB & All The People classics and feature the Godfather of funks little known warm up band -The Loosen Ups assisted by the gorgeous Miss Ray T on vocals. Up until now "Pay To Move On" and "You Got Me Cramp'd Up", two super rare dance floorfiller killers, have only been in the expert digging fingers of a certain Dope, Shadow and King Darge's grubby mitts. Nova Onda (5:02)
Review: Long-time friends and semi-regular collaborators Lord Funk and Moar established the Nova Onda imprint two years ago in order to deliver occasional seven-inch singles featuring razor-sharp, on-point re-edits of Brazilian gems. The series has now reached volume three, with the Paris-based pair delivering two more essential, light-touch re-rubs. Our pick of the pair is flipside 'Nova Onda', a DJ-friendly tweak of a Clavinet and quelchy synth-sporting chunk of P-funk influenced Brazilian boogie rich in excitable raps, high-register male backing vocals and grooves so addictive they should come with a health warning. A-side 'Bela Menina', meanwhile, is a similarly tidy revision of what sounds like a boogie-era MPB number - think improvised male vocals, jazz guitar licks, huggable grooves and dreamy synth sounds.

Review: Wanna hear the Isley Brothers classic "It's Your Thing" given a Latin shakedown? Mr Bongos have got you covered on the latest 7" in their splendid Latin 45s series! Originally issued back in 1974 on TR Records, this Los Africanos cover is a rum heavy Nu Yorican funk-soul instrumental featuring screaming Hammond organ and FX. It's very expensive in original form now, so shout outs to Mr Bongos for pressing it up here along with an equally good 1968 cover of instrumental, boogaloo version of Eddie Floyd's all-time classic "Knock On Wood" from Machito & His Afro-Cubans.

We say this because there aren't many good ones around, so it's refreshing to hear stuff so dope and fresh out and up on our vinyl charts. Here we have two funky little slices of organ-fuelled funk, two parts of "Sal's-U-Save" to be precise, but which are really just one long funk bullet spread across two sides of the 7". Review: Now firmly into the double figures, the Originals series seems like it could quite easily surpass the centenary mark without the concept ever feeling exhausted such is the vast well of source material and those that sampled it. Here the classic slab of funk that is "Parrty" by Maceo & The Macks takes centre stage on the A Side, reminding everyone that needs to be reminded just how tight Maceo, Fred and James were. The project is a collaboration between Neil Anderson and Max Jere of The Umoza Music Project, based in Senga Bay on Lake Malawi. On the A side track you can hear Jere singing in Malawi's main language of Chichewa, urging listeners to "vina!" which means 'dance'. It's unmistakably Afro funk, with blasts of horns and a rolling, hypnotic groove that suck you in immediately. This volume takes a slightly different approach, instead delivering killer cuts from two different artists, both of whom hail from the North of Brazil. On side A you'll find Magalhaes' 1986 gem 'Xangos', a cheery and energetic Lambada workout rich in jangling guitars, shuffling percussion, ear-catching vocals and restless bass. On the reverse Os Panteros takes over with 1987 jam 'Lambada Pauleira', a quirky chunk of Lambada full of fuzzy synths, infectious percussion and lo-fi guitar licks. A 70s scene setter with a New York state of mind and a dynamic arrangement that gradually unpeels and reveals, it's another smoker from the long-standing troupe. Time (3:57)
Review: Edition Hawara's second 7" release features one of the more obscure Austrian bands from the 1980s. Little is known about Magic Sound, though the cover suggests that their label wanted them to be Austria's answer to the Village People, though their sound is far more funk-leaning. One thing we know for sure is that the group included keyboard player Andy Tofferl, who was also a member of the famous pop ensemble EAV, as well as songwriter and producer Jiri Havran. We know that they went to the studio to record a whole album after touring Sweden in 1980, but only these two songs survived, and they are worth listening to over and over again. The vocals and keys are the stars of the show here and it seems the label was trying to engineer somewhat of a sequel to ABBA. You can't help but wonder what could've been for Magic Sound.

Review: You won't find many funk and soul records quite like Makers' 'Don't Challenge Me', a celebrated but very hard to find 1972 single from a group of musicians headed up by producer Boris Midney. As this much-needed reissue proves, the track was hugely ahead of its time, partly due to its then unusual fusion of dub and soul, but mainly because of Midney and company's use of spacey early synthesizer sounds. The influence of dub can still be heard on the quirky flipside soul jam 'You're Shy', a horn-sporting number rich in layered female vocals, quirky synth riffs and trippy tape delay effects. Both tracks still sound ridiculously fresh and futuristic, despite their vintage. A genuinely must-have release!

"The Devil Made Me Do It" is a funky, breaks-heavy funk bomb guided by Chima Anya's masterful lyricism, while "Strut Your Strut" is slower, looser and that little bit deeper for those B-side cats. Whether you're into old-school hip-hop or soul music, this EP has what it takes to float your boat good and proper.

Quierete (Voodoocuts Loves You More & More mix) (4:28)
Review: Spanish outfit Mampon is a 10-piece Afrobeat collective that is hear to get you dancing liek you have never dance before. And what better time to do that as we emerge from lockdown, with the sun beating down? The single they serve up here on Rocafort is 'Quierete,' with its mad horns, juggling beats, organic percussion and angular guitar riffs all making you shake every bone in your body utterly loose. The call and response vocals are hypnotic and finish the party in style. There is a real disco vibe to the flip side remix courtesy of another Latino artist, Voodoocuts

El Loco
Boogaloo Tormenta
Review: Effectively a Renegades Of Jazz offshoot, Mankoora is a brand new act with fire in their belly and a scorching Latin spirit in their lungs. Both cuts here are true salsa slayers with shin-splitting stomps and horns so vibrant you could light a pipe from them. "El Loco" teases with a plucked guitar intro before dropping into a classic big beat that conjures up memories of Bentley Rhythm Ace. "Boogaloo Tormenta" is far more explosive with some fantastic vocal adornments and a percussive spirit that smacks of a thousand carnivals.

The Get Down (Marc Hype & Naughty NMX rework) (3:42)
Hyped Up Ants (Naughty NMX redub) (3:25)
Review: Seen on the regular alongside fellow colluder Jim Dunloop, dusty-fingered German funkateer Marc Hype returns for another round of 7" action on the ever-dependable Dusty Donuts label. Up top, Hype teams up with Naughty NMX for a heavy duty tweak of James Brown classic "The Get Down" with the added weight to the drums really sounding fresh on a good system. "Pays the cost to be the boss" indeed! Naughty NMX goes solo on the B side, retreating another J Brown standard "I Got Ants In My Pants" with some added Public Enemy - the results speak for themselves. Good work all round.

The Mexican (feat Sara De Bourgeois) (4:11)
Oh Really? (feat Mr Complex) (3:41)
Review: Given that Babe Ruth's 'The Mexican' is one of the foundational records of hip-hop culture, it's not that surprising to see old pals and mash-up maestros Marc Hype and Jim Dunloop recording their own version in tribute. It's a punchy, floor-rocking affair, with tough programmed drums replacing the original's killer drum-breaks. The re-recorded vocals and fulsome and intense, the funk-rock guitar riffs raw and fuzzy, and the organ parts wild and energetic. Over on the flip, mic man Mr Complex stars on 'Oh Really?', a party-starting fusion of hip-hop, funk and synth-boogie that sounds like another bona fide floor-filler.

Shaft In Africa
Review: ** Repress for the breaks dons ** The long awaited new Visioneers Limited Edition 45 produced by Marc Mac of 4hero is here at last on BBE offshoot Omniverse. No messin' here as Visioneers go straight for the funk jugular with two dope versions. On the A-Side a version of The Shadows classic ''Apache'' gets flipped by Visioneers remake of Johnny Pate's B-Boy bomb "Shaft In Africa". Heavy horns and bongos aplenty - this is just wanted the doctor ordered. It's limited, it's hot, go get it!

Algo No Ar (4:07)
Algo No Ar (Steven J edit) (4:34)
Review: Fresh from '78: Brazilian funk lothario Marcelo's first big single (which was never out on a 45 before)- and a peak track from his debut eponymous album from the same year - gets a timely revisit from the Steven J's reissue/edit imprint Pepite. With its subtle piano striking Q&A, wild bass runs and clam-tight guitar/drum groove, Marcelo calls his way through the jam as if everything is a chorus. With its layered vocals, it's gutsy call to action for any dancefloor. Steven's edit stretches out the instrumental bars and brings out focus on the staccato vocal hook with a rising sense of momentum. Two great sides, one dope 45.
