JJ (4:31)
Review: 45 Loves is a label based in Condom, France that specialises in very limited DJ tools on vinyl 7'. Its next release comes from Jerome Potin aka Moar; producer, remixer, DJ and A&R at the Trad Vibe label from Nantes, who serves up some low-slung grooves on the Funky Party two-tracker. On side A, you've got the late-night boogie-down vibe of 'J', and the long hot sexy summer nights continue over on the flip with the funked-up vocal disco house heater 'JJ'.

K (3:45)
KK (2:55)
Review: French producer Moar has always made crisp and classic era boom bap sounds both when crafting his album for his dance floor ready 7"s. He has dropped several of them already this year and now comes back once again with this Rock Vs Rap offering which as you would guess pairs off tropes and sounds from both those genres to create something new and raw. 'K' has gnarly guitar riffs over dusty drums and some rock vocals. On the flipside, 'KK' opens up with more iconic rock riffs but filtered and chopped up then redeployed under some iconic hip-hop verses. Fine mash-ups for sure.

Review: Moar is back with more red-hot DJ weaponry from the worlds of funk and disco. 'L' is first up and is tighter than a tight thing with its funky breaks and explosive vocals over golden chords and withering cosmic melodies. Things get much more seductive on the flip as 'LL' sinks into a deeper, late night and more romantic funky vibe with steamy trumpets and emotive backing vocals. This fresh new 7" comes with a homemade custom cover and is limited to just 100 copies so do not sleep because it's high-grade tackle.

HH (3:52)
Review: When it comes to crafting party-starting joints featuring classic hip-hop and R&B vocals, few producers can match the output of Gallic rework fiend Jerome Potin AKA Moar. He's in prime form on this ultra-limited "45" too. A-side 'H' crafts a rolling, 4/4 hip-hop tempo beats out of some classic disco licks and then adds Ol' Dirty Bastard and Kelis' vocals from one of the biggest hip-hop hits of 1999. It's a simple idea, brilliantly executed. Flipside 'HH' is equally as funky and accessible, with cut-up edit effects, rubbery slap-bass sounds, jangling acoustic guitar chords, warming synths and the lead vocal from a much-loved R&B jam. Tons of fun!

Get Down
Review: The Funky Saturday label is an intermittent concern associated with the club night of the same name, France's longest-running funk monthly no less! Some five years after the label launched with an 1" of edits from resident DJ Pharoah, it's back for more on this 7" funker featuring him and fellow selector Moar. Lead track "Gimme Some" feels wedged in that warm spot between latter day funk and early forms of disco (check those Philly horns) and is blessed by a killer vocal. Whilst "Get Down" leans on a '80s boogie funk vibe. If you've not attended a Funky Saturday dance, this 7" acts as a fairly good reflection of what to expect.

Growler (2:43)
Review: With their first 45 selling out in under one week, Bristol troupe Mohawkestra are doing all the right things in all the right places. Especially our ears. Now loading up their second funk 45 bullet, it's likely to be just as successful... Big Hammond-led funk all the way, "I Feel Free" has the frenzy of The Meters but the fire of the Mohawkes while "Growler" does anything but growl - swinging with a fizzy lead line and heavy string strums, there's a train-like momentum that refuses to quit until the very last break. Heavenly.

The Mohawks - "The Champ" (Reggae version) (3:13)
The Marvels - "Rock Steady" (3:06)
Review: If you dig hip-hop, funk or soul, you should know 'The Champ', a much-sampled, Hammond-heavy 1968 rhythm & blues workout from Alan Hawkshaw's Mohawks outfit. However, you may not know this version: a 1973 reggae remake from the band that brilliantly slows down the main organ motif and places it atop a sturdy, bass-heavy rhythm. This time round, it comes backed with another killer reggae rework: a skanking take on Aretha Franklin soul classic 'Rock Steady' from the Marvels. Recorded and released in the UK by a group of exiled Jamaicans in the early 1970s, it remains an inspired example of reggae's 'versioning' culture.

Review: The Mocambo label introduces Turkish artist Peki Momes who began recording music by chance in 2023. Despite no formal music training, she brings a fresh, authentic approach to groove music based largely on intuition. Her first two tracks reflect her versatility and feature here - 'Goc Mevisimi' combines Japanese City Pop with tropical boogie to create a global underground vibe with dirty disco grooves, jazzy flute and Turkish lyrics. 'Ruya' then delivers a gritty psychedelic Anatolian sound with fuzzy guitars and hypnotic energy. Momes is working on a debut album, we hear, and we can't wait.

Review: Ukrainian jazz singer Mona returns with a powerful funk 45 following last year's breakout 'Moya Vode' (or 'Sweet Water'). Fusing ancient folk traditions with modern cypher culture, this one delivers a message of unity and resilience while rolling on tempting grooves. Jazzy breakbeats, soaring horns and relentless clavinet and guitar riffs create the dynamic foundation for Mona's radiant vocals while loose piano and sax add a fresh live-jam feel. Review: The wonderful new 'Womp In My Spirit' blends flashy 80s-inspired beats with smoothly delivered and rhythmic lyrics that together capture the essence of West Coast vibes with American Moniquea's distinctive vocals shining alongside masterful boogie beat maker XL Middleton's typically faultless contributions. Once again they have cooked up a gem for the modern funk scene and the instrumental version allows you to fully appreciate the depth of the production without the vocals. Review: Monsieur Van Pratt is a self-taught musician, producer and DJ from Mexico who has a clear love of disco, funk, soul and jazz of the 70s and 80s . He distils all that into his own floor-facing tunes with a big helping of charm making them irresistible to both DJs and dancers. He opens this tidy new 7" with 'This Jazz' which has playful sax riffs and chunky, convoluted drum tumbles that never quit. It's bouncy as a ball and packed with disco heat. 'Groove Lesson' is another devastatingly simple but effective tune with trillion guitar motifs, hip swing claps and disco chords underpinned by a perfeclty knotted and soulful bassline.

Can't Help Myself
Review: Straight from Miami this time we are really proud to present the reissue of one of the most in-demand and, according to everybody, probably best funk 45s ever cut: "Everything's Gonna Be All Right/I Can't Help Myself" by funk 45 legend Robert Moore. This 45 is one of the first releases from Robert Moore who later on became the lead singer of TK Records' family of labels house band 'Miami'. Miami released 3 albums including the seminal hit "Party Freaks" and played on sessions for Little Beaver, Gwen McCrae, and Betty Wright. "Everything's Gonna Be All Right" and "I Can't Help Myself" were originally released on Henry Stone's Sadia Records. The original 45 is very rare and one of the most collectible on the funk 45 scene. Both sides are massive and that's probably why it's still a big spin on all deep funk dancefloors.

Riddled with James Brown style screams and grunts, Tramp have unearthed this 1984 classic, delivered it on sweet one-sided 7" and it's not to be overlooked. Review: Lorenzo Morresi is an Italian DJ, producer and musician who now makes his debut on bristling London label 22a alongside the boss Tenderlonious. This 7" is an album sampler of Italian library inspired disco-funk that draws on the sound's 70s heyday. It was a shared love of this sound and this period that brought these two artists together having first played together at a gig in Italy in 2017. Having finally got together to record, they have mixed up contemporary analogue inspired arrangements and experimental, joyful, playful sounds that are as good at home as they will be on the 'floor. The album drops next year, and this is a fine taster.

Jazz, ska, funk, rock and soul all feature on the only two songs ever written by this outstanding band. It was lead by the American organist and pianist Scott Bradford alongside musicians from the Jess and James band, with the extra addition of Belgian jazz legend Philippe Catherine playing the guitar. The Belgian beatmaker is known for downtempo grooves but shows a different side here with two tracks alongside his band, later known as Placebo but here still known as Kiosk. Review: Last time out, hard-working Hanover producer Mr Confuse delivered some suitably sweaty, sample-heavy thrills built around horns, Moog stabs and the kind of infectious grooves that sit somewhere in between disco, funk and Afrobeat ('Spinning Around'). He changes tack a little on this fiery and funky follow-up, getting soulful, big-voiced singer Inna Yvsotska to belt out some life-affirming vocals above a crunchy funk groove and some seriously heavy horn lines. Small Fry (Patchworks remix)
Review: The multi talented Mr Day provides another release on Favourite Recordings with "Small Fry." Perfectly in tone with label and artist, this soulful release offers the original alongside a disco mix from Patchworks.

Hailing from France, Mr Day has his highly insurable fingers in several pies. He is the singer for both the French jazz combo, Metropolitan Jazz Affair and The Dynamics. He has also featured on highly acclaimed productions by Patchworks, Boozoo Bajou and Mr President not to mention his own electro soul releases on indie label Rotax. Now, Favourite recordings will be unleashing his debut solo album next month and have therefore decided to release "Small Fry" as a taster of the album which goes by the same name.

Displaying his immensely soulful disposition, the track Evokes classic 70s soul from the likes of Marvyne Gaye, Curtis Mayfield and Al Green. Its composition is sparse and roomy, each sound is given space to breathe as this easy and enveloping track unfolds with swagger and finesse. Effortlessly suave, "Small Fry" perhaps hints at the kind of pure soul music, dipped in elegance that we can expect from the forth coming full length. It is a beautiful track that also touches on Northern soul and Motown whilst keeping Mr Day's unique own sound.

Completing the package is fellow Frenchman, Patchworks. The esteemed producer and long time collaborator with Mr Day gives us a fresh and upfront disco-soul remix. More suited to the dancefloor than the original, his remix still retains the warm, vintage style that his production is known for.

Review: We know that there are tons of re-edits around and some tend towards the pointless, but it's always worth paying attention with the editor involved is Danny Krivit AKA Mr K. His edits are rarely less than brilliant, in part because the veteran New Yorker is usually able to breathe new life into classic cuts just through rearrangement and occasional use of additional instrumentation. 'Street Player', his latest rework of the Chicago classic of the same name, is a brilliant example of this. We all know and love the original, but Krivit's take is vastly different thanks to a lengthy, percussion-heavy build up and next to no chorus. It's a genuinely brilliant revision. Over on the flip he presents a short 'breakdown edit' of a sweaty old James Brown jam.

Hold On To Your Mind (5:18)
Review: Mr. K (Danny Krivit) transports us to the golden era of David Mancuso 's New York Loft with two disparate but equally heavyweight classics from the Mancuso oeuvre mastered and cut loud, deep, and clear for club play. First up is an edit of a track that embodies the spirit of early '80s downtown NYC. Originally released in 1982, 'Konk Party' was Konk's calling card and first hit and represented their multicultural, no wave, hip-hop/disco hybrid perfectly, the opening sax riff itself a giving sly nod to Wild Sugar's breakbeat classic 'Bring It Here' that the Beastie Boys would later sample. It was considered such a Loft staple that the video was even filmed there, as well as being played widely across the influential clubs of the day. The easy-going groove, heavy percussion and low-slung bass, complimented by bilingual lyrics from Angel QuiNones, still sounds ready for action, especially In this new edit from Mr. K. On the flip, 'Hold On To Your Mind' was first released in 1970 by Northern Irish rock group Andwella, is a heavy, psychedelic tour de force. Mr. K outdoes himself with his new mix, a supercharged blend of extended percussion breaks absent on previous 7-inch mixes, plus driving vocals, and fuzz guitar.

He puts out a fair few of them too, but the quality levels never dip, as is the case again here when he throws it back to the energy of his native New York's most legendary dancefloors. Opener 'Flying Machine' by War was originally composed for the 1978 film Youngblood and is a dramatic Latin-infused instrumental packed with swirling flutes, fierce perc and a breakbeat that's fuelled countless Afro house tracks. It's a fiery dancefloor weapon that hasn't been on 7" before and it comes backed with 'How Much Are They', which dives into deep dub territory with help from post-punk legends Jah Wobble, Jaki Liebezeit and Holger Czukay. It's a real mind melter packed with mad effects.

Brazil (Mr K 7-inch edit) (4:29)
Review: The one and only Mr. K presents a two-sided treat here starting with Janice McClain's underrated 1983 disco track and featuring a smooth, laid-back groove that blends steppers vibes with mid-tempo Philly soul. Written by McClain's uncle Milt Tennant and Thom Page, it captures a classic sound that is further enhanced by McClain's heartfelt vocals. This edit trims the rare 12" version for a 7" debut with pristine sound and the B-side flips to a fresh take on 'Brazil', which was a 1975 hit by the Ritchie Family. Mr. K's edit extends the vamp section, offering a full, uninterrupted four minutes of irresistible disco joy.

Bra (Mr K 7" edit) (4:24)
Niagara (Mr K edit) (4:28)
Review: Danny Krivit returns to the vinyl source with two killer edits for Paul Raffaele's Most Excellent Unltd. Label. He kicks off with a Cymande version that's been lurking in his crates for well over a decade. Taking the iconic bassline and stretching the Dickens out of it, it's a kindly reminder of how well Danny understands groove dynamics. Absolutely perfect for teasing a crowd before dropping the classic original. Flip for a shake-up of Niagara's "Sangondongo". A dedication to the drums whipped up with shamanic feels, say hello to your brand new favourite secret mixing weapon.

No Matter Where (Mr K edit) (4:26)
Time Is What You Need (Mr K edit) (4:56)
Review: The legendary edit king Mr. K is back with more of his trademark sonic treatments here, this time focussing on some lick funk sounds from the Motor City. His mid-tempo selections on this Detroit-themed 7" open-up with G.C. Cameron, a Motown mainstay with a wide vocal range as demonstrated on this classic rare groove cut, 'No Matter Where.' On the backside is more rare groove from Detroit but this time from the 80s and Candye Edwards's 'Time Is What You Need.' Edwards was part of the Detroit funk powerhouse One Way and through that got connected with songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Kevin McCord. They cooked up real gold together on a solo debut album with this being the standout cut from it. Perfect for warm outdoor dancing.

Funky Music (5:21)
Giving Up (5:29)
Review: Legendary DJ and edit king Mr K is back on Most Excellent Unlimited with the latest in their essential collaborative series. As always this is a slab of wax that offers up two gorgeous cuts that have been skilfully cut down to a maximum 7" 45rpm format. The first is Luther Vandross's 'Funky Music (Is a Part of Me)' which David Bowie later reworked to become one of his many hit singles 'Fascination.' In its original form, it has rickety soul grooves and lavish stings next to the soaring vocals. The tune second is Zulema's 'Giving Up' which has a dramatic intro, Mr K remasters it and allows the rolling piano, great string ensemble and guitar sounds to really cut through clearly. Two bonafide dancefloor delights.

Komi Ke Kenam (Fish & Funjee) (5:02)
Review: The wonderful Mr K is back with more edit magic on his own Most Excellent label, this time adding his own spin to 'Wela Wela', a hard edge and raw funk cut from Black Blood, a band of musicians from central Africa but who were based in Belgium. This one was never a hit back in the day for some reason but is built on a killer groove that Mr K reworks and tweaks for more suitable dance floor deployment. It was formerly on his Grass Roots record but now makes its way to a handy 7". On the flip is 'Komi Ke Kenam (Fish & Funjee)' which has tough breaks and funk bass that will ensure 'floors get down and dirty.

Review: Galaxy Sound Company's latest test pressing release features James Brown's 'Give It Up Or Turnit A Loose (Edit)' alongside Hampton Hughes' 'Web (Edit)' and is another doozy for edit lovers old and new. Side A of this 44th instalment offers a masterful breakbeat edit from JB's 'In The Jungle Groove' that brings forth the rhythm of Clyde Stubblefield and Bootsy Collins so is perfect for igniting a party. On the flipside, the jazzy grooves of Hughes' 'Web' which has been famously sampled by Hieroglyphics in 'Off the Record' is another floor filler while bonus beats from the A-side round out this essential double.

Adolfo Echeverria Y Su Orquesta - "Sabroso Bacalao" (4:24)
Fruko Y Sus Tesos - "Mi Verdadero Son" (3:33)
Review: Gold standard funk fanatics Mukatsuku again look to Latin American for their latest volume in their ongoing Colombian Latin Funk & Salsa Gems series. Both of the cuts here have been carefully picked from Disco Fuentes back catalogue with Adolfo Echeverria Y Su Orquesta's 'Sabroso Bacalao' first up. The pianos are killer from the off, with shuffling percussion and nimble drum work all finished with fiery vocals. Fruko Y Sus Tesos's 'Mi Verdadero Son' is on the reverse and has more infectious vocals and wild brass stabs that make you want to flail your every limb around way above your head. Pure heat as ever here and hand-numbered to just 500 copies. Strictly no repress. As played by DJ Koco..Gilles Peterson..The Allergies.. Dom Servini... Skeme Richards..Bobbito..

Biosis Now - "Independent Bahamas" (Nik's Exclusive Mukatsuku edit) (3:30)
Afro Train - "Tumba Safari" (Nik's Exclusive Mukatsuku re-edit) (3:28)
Review: This tasty 7" from the reliable Mukatsuku label sees 2 killer funk treats for the dancefloor. On the A-side there's a handy and exclusive re-edit of Bahamian combo Biosis Now's ludicrously rare "Independent Bahamas", a righteous call for self-governance backed with a wonderfully fuzzy and full-throttle tropical funk groove. A copy recently for $700 on ebay for the very first time of the original 45. On the flipside we find "Tumba Safari" taken from the recent Oriki compilation, a suitably heavy chunk of Ivory Coast afro-funk from long forgotten outfit Afro Train. Weston's version naturally emphasizes the drum breaks, heavy horns and razor-sharp guitars, in the process tightening it up for contemporary club play.As played by Hunee,Red Greg ,DJ Logic and Nicola Conte
